LESSON 79

Let me recognize the problem so it can be resolved

Let me realize today that the problem is always some form of grievance that I would cherish. Let me only understand that the solution is always a miracle with which I let the grievance be replaced. Today I would remember the simplicity of salvation by reinforcing the lesson that there is one problem and one solution. The problem is a grievance; the solution is a miracle. And I invite the solution to come to me through my forgiveness of the grievance, and my welcome of the miracle that takes its place.

*ACIM Lesson 79: “Let me recognize the problem so it can be solved.”*

This lesson is very gentle, but it goes straight to the heart of the ego’s strategy. It tells us something the ego never wants us to see: there is only one problem, and it has already been solved. Everything else is distraction.

I. The Core Teaching

1. The one problem

The Course tells us that all our troubles—every fear, conflict, illness, argument, and anxiety—are really just one problem in different disguises. That one problem is *the belief that we are separate from God*.

The ego says:

  • You are a separate, vulnerable self.
  • You are cut off from Love.
  • You are on your own, and you must protect yourself.

From that single belief, a whole world of problems seems to arise:

  • “I’m not safe.”
  • “I’m not loved enough.”
  • “I’m not good enough.”
  • “I’m going to lose something.”
  • “I might be punished.”

But the Course is very clear: beneath all these forms, there is only one content—*the belief in separation*.

2. What the ego is trying to hide

The ego’s survival depends on you believing in many different problems. If you ever truly saw that there is only one problem, and that it has already been answered, the ego would lose its grip.

So the ego:

  • Multiplies problems: money, health, relationships, self-worth, time, future, past.
  • Keeps you busy analyzing, fixing, worrying.
  • Tells you: “This problem is special. This one is real. This one proves you are separate and alone.”

The ego is trying to hide:

  • That the “problem” is not in the world, but in the mind.
  • That the “problem” is not what you think it is.
  • That the “problem” has already been solved by God.

If you saw this clearly, you would stop looking for salvation in the world. You would stop trying to rearrange the dream and instead wake up from it.

3. What the Holy Spirit is revealing

The Holy Spirit gently whispers:

  • There is only one problem: the belief in separation.
  • There is only one answer: the memory of your oneness with God.
  • This answer is already in your mind.

The Holy Spirit is not trying to fix the world. He is trying to *heal your perception*. He wants you to see:

  • You are not guilty.
  • You are not abandoned.
  • You are not broken.
  • You are not a body.
  • You are still as God created you.

The Holy Spirit reveals that every specific problem is actually a doorway:

  • A doorway back to the one problem.
  • And therefore, a doorway back to the one solution.

When you say, “Let me recognize the problem so it can be solved,” you are really saying:

“Let me see that this is not about the form of the problem at all.
Let me see that this is another chance to remember I cannot be separate from Love.”

II. Applied to Daily Life

Let’s look at how this shows up in everyday situations.

1. Relationships

You might think:

  • “My problem is that my partner doesn’t listen.”
  • “My problem is that I’m alone.”
  • “My problem is that my friend betrayed me.”

The ego says the problem is the other person’s behavior. The Holy Spirit says:

  • The real problem is that you feel separate from Love.
  • You believe your safety and worth depend on another body’s words and actions.
  • You are using this person to prove that you are either unlovable or unfairly treated.

To recognize the real problem, you might say:

  • “This is not about what they did or didn’t do.

This is about my belief that I can be hurt, abandoned, or diminished.

That belief is the only problem. And it has already been answered in God’s Love.”

As you let this in, you may feel softer, less defensive. You might still set boundaries or have honest conversations, but now from a place of more peace, not attack.

2. Work and money

You might think:

  • “My problem is my boss.”
  • “My problem is not enough money.”
  • “My problem is that my career is stuck.”

The ego says the problem is external: the job, the economy, your skills. The Holy Spirit says:

  • The real problem is the fear that you are unsupported.
  • You believe your Source is the world, not God.
  • You think your worth is measured by productivity, status, or income.

To recognize the real problem:

  • “This is not about this job or this paycheck.

This is about my belief that I am on my own and must struggle to survive.

That belief is the only problem. And it has already been answered by the fact that I remain in God’s care.”

You may still look for new work, ask for a raise, or change careers. But you will do so with more trust, less panic. You will look to inner guidance, not fear, to lead the way.

3. Illness and the body

You might think:

  • “My problem is my illness.”
  • “My problem is pain.”
  • “My problem is aging.”

The ego says the problem is the body itself. The Holy Spirit says:

  • The deeper problem is the belief that you *are* a body.
  • That you can be limited, damaged, or ended.
  • That your identity is fragile and temporary.

To recognize the real problem:

  • “This is not ultimately about this symptom or diagnosis.

This is about my belief that my life is in a body, not in God.

That belief is the only problem. And it has already been answered by the truth that I am spirit, not flesh.”

This does not mean you ignore medical care. You can still use every loving form of help. But you begin to see that *your peace is not hostage to the body’s condition*.

4. Anxiety and daily stress

You might think:

  • “My problem is the future.”
  • “My problem is too much to do.”
  • “My problem is that I can’t control things.”

The ego says the problem is time, circumstances, and other people. The Holy Spirit says:

  • The real problem is the belief you are separate from a loving, guiding Presence.
  • You think you must manage everything alone.
  • You are afraid of a future in which God is not with you.

To recognize the real problem:

  • “This is not about my schedule or the unknown future.

This is about my belief that I can be without guidance and support.

That belief is the only problem. And it has already been answered by the fact that the Holy Spirit is with me now.”

As you practice this, you may notice a subtle shift from tension to trust, from “I must handle this” to “I am being helped.”

III. Overcoming Resistance

1. Why this lesson can feel threatening

This lesson challenges the ego’s entire thought system. The ego insists:

  • Problems are many.
  • They are outside you.
  • They are real.
  • They require struggle.

If you accept that there is only one problem and it is in the mind, the ego’s world of complexity begins to crumble. That can feel:

  • Disorienting (“If this isn’t the real problem, what is?”)
  • Invalidating (“Are you saying my pain isn’t real?”)
  • Frightening (“If I let go of my problems, who will I be?”)

2. Gently addressing doubts and fear

You might think:

  • “But my situation really is serious.”
  • “This feels like denial.”
  • “I don’t know how to see it differently.”

The Course is not asking you to deny your feelings or pretend you don’t care. It is asking you to *question the cause* of your suffering.

You can say to yourself:

  • “I am not being asked to minimize my experience.

I am being invited to look deeper than the surface.

I can still cry, ask for help, and take practical steps, while also remembering:

The real problem is my belief in separation, and that has already been answered.”

You are not asked to leap into perfect faith. You are asked only to *be willing*:

  • Willing to consider that maybe you don’t fully understand the problem.
  • Willing to let the Holy Spirit reinterpret it.
  • Willing to let go of the ego’s insistence that you are right about what’s wrong.

IV. Today’s Practice

Here is a simple way to practice Lesson 79 today.

1. Morning quiet time (10–15 minutes)

1. Sit quietly, close your eyes, and take a few gentle breaths.

2. Say slowly, with intention:

  • “Let me recognize the problem so it can be solved.”

3. Bring to mind a problem that feels important to you right now.

4. Notice how you describe it: who is involved, what seems at stake.

5. Then say inwardly:

  • “This is not the real problem.

The real problem is the belief that I am separate from God.

That problem has already been solved.”

6. Sit in quiet, letting this idea sink in. You don’t have to force belief. Just let the words rest in your mind.

7. If other problems come up, gently repeat the same process:

  • “This too is not the real problem.

The real problem is the belief in separation, and it has already been answered.”

End with:

  • “Holy Spirit, help me see my problems as they truly are,

so I may accept the answer You already hold for me.”

2. Short practice periods during the day

Several times an hour if you can, or at least a few times in the morning and afternoon:

1. Pause for a moment.

2. Say silently:

  • “Let me recognize the problem so it can be solved.”

3. If you feel upset, anxious, or annoyed about something specific, add:

  • “This is not the real problem.

The real problem is my belief in separation, and that has already been solved.”

You don’t need to feel anything special. You are simply loosening the ego’s story and making room for a different way of seeing.

3. When you feel strong emotion

Whenever you feel anger, fear, sadness, or guilt:

1. Acknowledge the feeling: “I feel afraid (or angry, or sad).”

2. Then gently remind yourself:

  • “I think the problem is [name the situation],

but that is not the real problem.

The real problem is that I believe I am separate from Love.

And that problem has already been answered.”

3. Ask:

  • “Holy Spirit, show me how to see this differently.”

Even a small willingness opens the door.

V. Comparable ACIM Lessons

This lesson is closely connected with several others:

  • **Lesson 80: “Let me recognize my problems have been solved.”**

Lesson 79 identifies the one problem; Lesson 80 celebrates that it is already answered. They are a pair.

  • **Lesson 26: “My attack thoughts are attacking my invulnerability.”**

Both lessons show that the real issue is in the mind, not in external events.

  • **Lesson 41: “God goes with me wherever I go.”**

If God goes with you, separation is impossible. Therefore, the “problem” of separation is not real.

  • **Lesson 68: “Love holds no grievances.”**

Grievances are the ego’s proof that separation is real. Recognizing the one problem dissolves the need for grievances.

  • **Lesson 71: “Only God’s plan for salvation will work.”**

The ego’s plan is to solve many separate problems in the world. God’s plan is to heal the one problem in the mind.

All these lessons work together to gently show you:

You are not what you thought you were, and your problems are not what you thought they were.

VI. Closing Thought

Today, you are not asked to fix your life.

You are asked to *look more deeply* at what you call a “problem,”

and to let the Holy Spirit show you that beneath every fear,

there is only one mistaken belief—

and that it has already been answered in Love.

You do not walk this path alone.

Each time you say, “Let me recognize the problem so it can be solved,”

you are taking the Holy Spirit’s hand a little more firmly,

and stepping one pace closer to the peace that has always been yours.
