Lesson 154: “I am among the ministers of God.”

I. The Core Teaching

This lesson is not about becoming “religious,” special, or important. It is about remembering your true function as the extension of God’s Love.

When the Course says you are “among the ministers of God,” it means:

  • You were created to **give** what you are: love, peace, innocence, and joy.
  • Your very being is a **message** from God to His Son: “You are still as I created you—whole, loved, and safe.”
  • You “minister” not by preaching, but by **being willing** to let the Holy Spirit use your mind, words, and actions for healing.

What is the ego trying to hide?

The ego’s central lie is:

“You are separate, guilty, and on your own. You must protect yourself, prove yourself, and survive in a dangerous world.”

From this lie, the ego builds a whole identity:

  • “I am this body.”
  • “I am my history, my wounds, my successes, my failures.”
  • “I am what others think of me.”
  • “I am vulnerable, and I must defend myself.”

If you accept that you are a minister of God, the ego’s whole identity begins to crumble. Why?

Because to be a minister of God means:

  • You are **not** a guilty, broken self trying to become worthy.
  • You are already **joined** with God and with every brother and sister.
  • You are here to **give** love, not to bargain for scraps of it.

The ego wants to hide:

1. *Your innocence* – because if you knew you were innocent, you would not fear God.

2. *Your power to choose* – because if you knew you could choose the Holy Spirit at any moment, the ego would lose its grip.

3. *Your unity with all beings* – because if you knew you were one with everyone, attack and judgment would feel insane, not satisfying.

So the ego whispers:

  • “You’re not ready to serve God.”
  • “You’re too flawed, too wounded.”
  • “You’ll be taken advantage of if you’re too loving.”
  • “Spiritual stuff is unrealistic; you have real-world problems.”

All of this is a smokescreen to keep you from discovering that your *natural state* is to be a clear, gentle channel of Love.

What is the Holy Spirit revealing?

The Holy Spirit speaks from the truth of what you are:

  • You are **God’s Son**, not a separate self.
  • You are **innocent**, regardless of what you think you’ve done.
  • You are **safe**, because nothing real can be threatened.
  • You are **needed**, because your willingness allows healing to enter the world.

The Holy Spirit reveals that:

  • Your life has a **holy purpose**: to remember Love and extend it.
  • Every encounter is a **holy encounter**: an opportunity to see Christ in another and thus remember Christ in yourself.
  • You do not need to know *how* to help; you only need to say, “Use me,” and the Holy Spirit will guide your words, silence, and presence.

To be “among the ministers of God” is to say:

“I am willing to let my life be used for healing.
I am willing to see differently.
I am willing to remember who I am.”

II. Applied to Daily Life

1. Relationships

Imagine you’re in a tense relationship—perhaps with a partner, family member, or friend. The ego’s script says:

  • “They’re wrong.”
  • “I must protect myself.”
  • “I’ll be loving only if they change.”

As a minister of God, your function shifts:

  • You silently ask: “Holy Spirit, how would You have me see this person?”
  • You remember: “This is not an enemy. This is my brother, calling for love or extending love.”
  • You become willing to let your **goal** change from “winning” to **healing**.

You might:

  • Speak more gently.
  • Choose to listen rather than defend.
  • Admit your own fear or hurt without blame.
  • Or say nothing at all, simply holding them in quiet blessing.

Your “ministry” is not about fixing them. It is about letting your mind be a place where *no attack is justified*, and where forgiveness becomes your chosen perception.

2. Work and Career

At work, the ego says:

  • “I must compete.”
  • “I must protect my image.”
  • “I must get ahead.”

As a minister of God:

  • You remember that your **real job** is to bring peace to every situation.
  • You silently invite: “Holy Spirit, use this meeting, this email, this project. Let me be an instrument of kindness and clarity.”

Examples:

  • You choose not to join in gossip.
  • You respond to a rude email with calm, not retaliation.
  • You quietly bless your coworkers, remembering they are more than their roles and behaviors.

Your career becomes a *classroom* where you practice seeing Christ in everyone, including yourself.

3. Illness and the Body

When illness appears, the ego says:

  • “You are your body.”
  • “You are weak and vulnerable.”
  • “You are being punished or abandoned.”

As a minister of God:

  • You acknowledge any fear and pain honestly, but you also remember: “This is not what I am.”
  • You ask: “Holy Spirit, how can this be used for healing? How can I remember my true Self, even here?”

You might:

  • Allow others to care for you, seeing it as an opportunity to receive love.
  • Use moments of discomfort as prompts to repeat, “I am still as God created me.”
  • Offer your fear to the Holy Spirit, asking for a shift from fear to trust.

Your body’s condition does not define your holiness. Your *willingness to see with Love* is your ministry, even in sickness.

4. Anxiety and Daily Stress

Anxiety often comes from the ego’s belief:

  • “I am alone and must control everything.”

As a minister of God:

  • You pause and say, “I am not alone. I walk with God.”
  • You remember that your **only real function** is to accept and extend peace, not to manage every outcome.

In a stressful moment:

  • Take a breath.
  • Silently say: “Holy Spirit, I give You this situation. Show me how to see it.”
  • Let your focus shift from “What might go wrong?” to “How can I bring peace here, even a little?”

Your ministry is not grand; it is often *quiet and ordinary*—a calm tone, a gentle word, a willingness to trust.

III. Overcoming Resistance

This lesson can feel threatening because it touches the ego’s deepest fears.

Common resistances:

1. *“I’m not worthy to be a minister of God.”*

The ego equates ministry with perfection. The Holy Spirit uses your *imperfections* as openings for humility and compassion. Your willingness, not your perfection, is what matters.

2. *“I’m afraid I’ll lose myself or be taken advantage of.”*

The ego believes that to give love is to become weak. The Holy Spirit reveals that true giving *strengthens* you because you are giving what you are. This does not mean being a doormat; it means letting Love, not fear, guide your boundaries.

3. *“This feels too big, too spiritual, too unrealistic.”*

The ego wants spirituality to stay abstract. The Holy Spirit brings it into the *smallest details of your day. You are not asked to change your outer life dramatically, only your inner teacher*.

4. *“I’m afraid of what God will ask of me.”*

The ego projects its own cruelty onto God. The Holy Spirit gently corrects this: God asks only that you accept your happiness and share it. Anything that feels like sacrifice is from the ego, not from God.

You do not overcome resistance by fighting it. You simply *notice it, admit it, and offer it*:

“Holy Spirit, I feel afraid of this idea.
I’m afraid to be used by You.
Please show me that I am safe in Your Love.”

IV. Today’s Practice

Here is a simple, practical way to work with Lesson 154 today.

1. Morning (5–10 minutes)

1. Sit quietly, close your eyes, and relax your body.

2. Slowly repeat the idea:

*“I am among the ministers of God.”*

3. Let the words sink in. If resistance arises, just notice it and say:

“I am willing to see this differently.”

4. Gently imagine your day ahead—people you might meet, tasks you must do.

5. Say inwardly:

“Holy Spirit, I offer You this day.

Use my mind, my words, my hands, my feet.

Let me be a channel of peace, without sacrifice and without strain.”

6. Rest a moment in quiet, as if you are being *appointed* to your true function.

2. During the Day (frequent, short reminders)

Whenever you remember, pause briefly and say:

  • “I am among the ministers of God.

Let me remember my function now.”

In challenging moments:

  • Before responding, silently say:

“Holy Spirit, what would You have me say or do?

Where would You have me go?

What would You have me see?”

Even if you hear nothing specific, trust that your *willingness* has shifted the situation.

3. Evening (5 minutes)

Before sleep:

1. Recall the day gently, without judgment.

2. Notice any moments when you remembered your function, even briefly. Give thanks.

3. Notice moments when you forgot and followed the ego instead. Don’t condemn yourself. Simply say:

“I was mistaken, and I am willing to learn.

Holy Spirit, reinterpret this day for me.”

4. End with:

“I am among the ministers of God, and I accept my function.”

V. Comparable ACIM Lessons

Several lessons echo and support Lesson 154:

  • **Lesson 37: “My holiness blesses the world.”**

Your holiness is the basis of your ministry. You bless simply by being what you are.

  • **Lesson 41: “God goes with me wherever I go.”**

You are never ministering alone. God’s Presence is your strength.

  • **Lesson 61: “I am the light of the world.”**

Your function is to bring light to darkness, not by effort, but by recognition of what you already are.

  • **Lesson 62: “Forgiveness is my function as the light of the world.”**

Your ministry is expressed through forgiveness—seeing beyond appearances to the truth.

  • **Lesson 65: “My only function is the one God gave me.”**

All other “functions” (roles, identities) are secondary. Your true function is to extend Love.

  • **Lesson 139: “I will accept Atonement for myself.”**

You can only minister healing by first accepting it for yourself. You cannot give what you believe you do not have.

Each of these lessons prepares you to accept, in Lesson 154, that your life is not random or meaningless. It is part of a vast plan of healing in which every mind is called to remember the truth.

VI. Closing Thought

You do not have to become anything other than what you are. You are already a minister of God because you are already His beloved creation.

Today, you are simply asked to *allow* this to be true for you—to let your mind be used for Love instead of fear, even in small, quiet ways.

Walk gently today, remembering:

*You are not alone, and your presence here matters.*
