*ACIM Lesson 71: “Only God’s plan for salvation will work.”*
This lesson is a gentle but radical invitation to stop trying to save ourselves in all the ways that never truly work, and to let the Holy Spirit show us the only plan that actually brings peace.
It is not saying that God has a plan to rescue a guilty, broken you from a dangerous world. It is saying that God’s “plan” is simply the truth: you are already safe in Him, and the only thing that needs “saving” is your mind from its mistaken belief in separation.
1. The Core Teaching
What is the ego trying to hide?
The ego’s secret is very simple: it wants to keep you from discovering that you are already free.
The ego’s plan for salvation is always some version of:
- “I will be safe when…”
- “I will be happy if…”
- “I will finally be at peace once…”
It tells you:
- You will be saved by money, status, control, approval, a special relationship, a perfect body, or a certain spiritual identity.
- You will be safe if you defend yourself, attack first, withdraw, or manipulate.
- You will be at peace once you fix the world or fix yourself.
Underneath all of this is one core lie:
*“You are separate from God, on your own, and in danger. You must save yourself.”*
The ego is trying to hide the fact that:
- You are not a separate, vulnerable self.
- You are not guilty.
- You are not at the mercy of the world.
- You are not the body.
- You are not the author of yourself.
If you discovered that your safety and innocence are already guaranteed by God, the ego would have no purpose. So it keeps you busy with endless projects of self-improvement, self-defense, and self-justification.
What is the Holy Spirit revealing?
The Holy Spirit’s “plan for salvation” is not a sequence of events. It is a correction of perception.
It reveals:
- You are as God created you: whole, innocent, and eternally loved.
- Nothing real can be threatened; nothing unreal exists.
- You do not need to earn God’s Love; you are that Love.
- You are not in the world; the world is in your mind.
- Salvation is not in changing the form, but in changing the mind that sees.
Where the ego says, “You are guilty and must pay,”
the Holy Spirit says, “You are mistaken and can be corrected.”
Where the ego says, “You must protect yourself,”
the Holy Spirit says, “You are already protected.”
Where the ego says, “You must find salvation in the future,”
the Holy Spirit says, “Salvation is here, now, in your willingness to see differently.”
So when the lesson says, *“Only God’s plan for salvation will work,”* it means:
- Only the plan that begins with your innocence and wholeness can truly bring peace.
- Only the plan that corrects your mind, not your circumstances, can end suffering.
- Only the plan that comes from Love, not fear, can be trusted.
2. Applied to Daily Life
Let’s look at how this shows up in ordinary situations.
Relationships
*Ego’s plan:*
- “If this person behaves as I want, I’ll be happy.”
- “If I can get them to love me, I’ll feel worthy.”
- “If they apologize, I’ll be at peace.”
This makes the other person responsible for your salvation. You are constantly waiting, bargaining, or blaming.
*Holy Spirit’s plan:*
- “My peace does not depend on another’s behavior.”
- “This relationship is a classroom for remembering my innocence and theirs.”
- “I can choose to see this person as either an enemy or a call for love.”
Example:
Someone criticizes you. The ego says, “Attack back, withdraw, or obsess over it.”
The Holy Spirit whispers, “Here is a chance to remember: my worth is not at stake. This person is afraid, just as I am. I can choose peace instead of this.”
You might still speak up, set boundaries, or walk away—but now from clarity, not from fear. That is God’s plan at work: a shift from attack to forgiveness, from defense to trust.
Work and Career
*Ego’s plan:*
- “My job is my identity.”
- “If I succeed, I’m valuable; if I fail, I’m nothing.”
- “My security depends on this paycheck, this promotion, this recognition.”
This creates constant pressure and anxiety. You are trying to save yourself through performance.
*Holy Spirit’s plan:*
- “My value is given by God and cannot be increased or decreased.”
- “My work is a place to extend love, not prove my worth.”
- “I can ask for guidance in every decision and trust that I am led.”
Example:
You fear losing your job. The ego says, “Panic. Compete. Overwork. Lie if needed.”
The Holy Spirit says, “Your real security is in God. Let Me guide you. I will show you what to say, what to do, where to go. Your peace does not depend on this job.”
You may still look for other opportunities, update your résumé, or speak to your boss—but you do it from a quieter mind, less identified with the outcome.
Illness and the Body
*Ego’s plan:*
- “The body is who I am. If it’s threatened, I am threatened.”
- “If I can control my health perfectly, I’ll be safe.”
- “Illness proves I’m weak, unlucky, or punished.”
This leads to fear, guilt, and sometimes shame around illness.
*Holy Spirit’s plan:*
- “You are not a body; you are free.”
- “The body is a neutral tool for communication, not your identity.”
- “Illness is not punishment; it is a call for gentler thoughts, deeper trust, and forgiveness.”
Example:
You receive a troubling diagnosis. The ego says, “This is proof you are vulnerable and alone.”
The Holy Spirit says, “Even now, you remain as God created you. Let Me use this situation to deepen your trust, soften your heart, and bring you closer to the awareness of Love.”
You still follow medical guidance, take care of the body, and seek help—but you hold all of it in a larger context: your true Self is untouched.
Anxiety and Daily Stress
*Ego’s plan:*
- “If I worry enough, I’ll be prepared.”
- “If I control everything, I’ll be safe.”
- “If I think through every possible disaster, I can prevent it.”
Worry becomes a false form of self-protection.
*Holy Spirit’s plan:*
- “You are carried.”
- “You do not walk alone.”
- “You can ask for help at every moment, and it will be given.”
Example:
You are anxious about the future. The ego loops through worst-case scenarios.
The Holy Spirit invites you to pause and say:
“Only God’s plan for salvation will work. I do not know what anything is for. I am willing to be shown.”
You may still plan, organize, and act—but now guided by a quieter, more trusting mind.
3. Overcoming Resistance
Why might this lesson be difficult?
Because it asks you to admit:
*“My plans for saving myself do not work.”*
This can feel like:
- Losing control.
- Being vulnerable.
- Letting go of cherished identities (“the responsible one,” “the strong one,” “the victim,” “the fixer,” “the spiritual one”).
The ego whispers:
- “If you don’t worry, you’ll be irresponsible.”
- “If you don’t defend yourself, you’ll be hurt.”
- “If you trust God, you’ll be abandoned.”
Underneath is a deep fear:
“If I don’t run my life, no one will.”
The Course gently answers:
“If you stop running your life, Love will.”
Letting go of your own plan does not mean passivity or apathy. It means:
- You act, but from guidance, not fear.
- You speak, but from honesty, not attack.
- You plan, but without making your peace depend on the outcome.
If you feel resistance, that is okay. You do not have to force belief. You only need a *little willingness* to say:
“I might not know what truly saves me. I am willing to be shown another way.”
4. Today’s Practice (Lesson 71)
Here is a simple way to practice this lesson today, in line with the Course’s intent.
A. Morning (longer practice, about 10–15 minutes)
1. *Sit quietly*
Close your eyes. Take a few gentle breaths. Let your body relax as much as it can.
2. *State the idea slowly*
Say inwardly, with as much sincerity as you can:
“Only God’s plan for salvation will work.
I am willing to accept it instead of my own.”
3. *Look at your own “plans”*
Let your mind show you the ways you think you will be “saved”:
- “If I get this relationship…”
- “If I fix this problem…”
- “If I change my body…”
- “If I get this money, job, approval…”
Don’t judge these thoughts. Just notice them.
4. *Gently question them*
For each one, say quietly:
“This is my plan for salvation.
It has not brought me lasting peace.
I do not know what my salvation is.”
5. *Open to God’s plan*
Now say:
“Only God’s plan for salvation will work.
I do not know what it is, but I am willing to be shown.”
Then sit in quiet. You are not trying to force images or answers. You are simply resting in willingness. If thoughts arise, let them pass like clouds. Return gently to:
“Only God’s plan for salvation will work.”
6. *Close with trust*
End by saying:
“I place my life, my relationships, my body, and my future in Your Hands.
Guide me today. I will listen.”
B. Short Practices Throughout the Day
Several times an hour, or whenever you feel tension, repeat silently:
- “Only God’s plan for salvation will work.”
- “I do not know what anything is for. I am willing to be shown.”
- “Let me accept God’s plan for my salvation and be glad.”
When you feel upset, anxious, or angry, pause and say:
“This is my plan for salvation again.
It is not working.
Holy Spirit, I choose Your plan instead.
Help me see this differently.”
5. Comparable ACIM Lessons
This lesson is closely connected with several others:
- **Lesson 24: “I do not perceive my own best interests.”**
Both lessons ask you to admit you are not a reliable guide to your own happiness.
- **Lesson 25: “I do not know what anything is for.”**
This loosens your grip on your interpretations, making room for God’s plan.
- **Lesson 65: “My only function is the one God gave me.”**
Both emphasize that your true function is given by God, not invented by the ego.
- **Lesson 72: “Holding grievances is an attack on God’s plan for salvation.”**
Directly follows and deepens Lesson 71 by showing that grievances are the ego’s substitute for God’s plan.
- **Lesson 135: “If I defend myself I am attacked.”**
Shows how the ego’s defense strategies are its own false plan for safety, which actually increases fear.
All of these lessons work together to gently undo your faith in the ego’s plan and restore your trust in the Holy Spirit’s guidance.
6. Closing Thought
You do not have to know how God’s plan works.
You only need to stop insisting that your plan must work.
Today, you are invited to rest in a deeper safety than the world can offer.
You are not being asked to sacrifice anything real—only your belief in what has never brought you lasting peace.
Let this simple thought accompany you:
**“Only God’s plan for salvation will work.
I am willing to let Love lead the way.”**
