*ACIM Lesson 365*
*“This holy instant would I give to You.
Be You in charge. For I would follow You,
Certain that Your direction gives me peace.”*
I. The Core Teaching
This final lesson of the Workbook is like a gentle bow, a quiet surrender of the entire year of practice. It gathers everything into one simple movement of the heart:
- I give this instant to God.
- I let the Holy Spirit be in charge.
- I trust that following His guidance is the only way to real peace.
At its core, this lesson is about *complete willingness*. Not perfect understanding, not perfect holiness as the ego imagines it, but simple willingness to let the Holy Spirit lead.
What is the ego trying to hide?
The ego’s main strategy is to keep you *in charge*—or at least make you believe you are. It tells you:
- “You must protect yourself.”
- “You must control outcomes.”
- “You must figure everything out.”
- “If you don’t worry, you’re irresponsible.”
- “If you surrender, you’ll be hurt or lose something important.”
Underneath all its arguments is one fear:
If you truly let God be in charge, the ego will disappear. And since you’ve been taught to identify with the ego—its stories, its past, its grievances—it feels like you will disappear.
So the ego hides:
1. *Your true safety* – It tells you safety lies in defense, planning, and control, rather than in God’s Love.
2. *Your innocence* – It insists you are guilty or not enough, and must prove your worth.
3. *Your unity with all* – It insists you are separate, alone, competing, and vulnerable.
4. *The present moment* – It drags you into past and future so you never rest in the holy instant, where God’s peace is actually experienced.
The ego’s secret terror is that if you rest in a holy instant—just one moment of genuine surrender—you will taste a peace so deep that you will no longer believe in its fearful world.
What is the Holy Spirit revealing?
The Holy Spirit, the Voice for God in your mind, reveals the opposite:
- You are **already safe**, because you are God’s beloved creation.
- You are **already innocent**, because nothing real can be threatened and nothing unreal exists.
- You are **joined with all**, because separation never truly occurred.
- Peace is **here, now**, in this instant, when you stop trying to run the show.
The Holy Spirit is not asking you to sacrifice anything real. He is gently inviting you to *exchange illusions for truth*:
- Fear for trust
- Control for guidance
- Judgment for forgiveness
- Isolation for joining
Lesson 365 is the heart saying:
“I will no longer pretend I know what anything is for. I will let You lead, because I finally admit: my way has not brought me peace.”
II. Applied to Daily Life
Let’s bring this into the ordinary places where the ego is loudest: relationships, work, illness, anxiety, and daily stress.
1. Relationships
Suppose you’re in conflict with a partner, friend, or family member. The ego wants:
- To be right
- To defend
- To replay old hurts
- To predict future disappointment
In that moment, this lesson becomes very practical:
“This holy instant would I give to You.
Be You in charge. For I would follow You,
Certain that Your direction gives me peace.”
You might pause and say inwardly:
- “I don’t know what this relationship is for.”
- “I don’t know what will truly help us.”
- “Holy Spirit, You be in charge of my words, my tone, my listening.”
Then you might feel a softening:
- Maybe you speak more gently.
- Maybe you say less.
- Maybe you simply listen.
- Maybe you forgive silently instead of rehearsing grievances.
The outer situation may or may not shift right away, but *your inner teacher has changed*. You are no longer letting the ego run the conversation.
2. Work and Decisions
At work, the ego pushes:
- “You must achieve to be worthy.”
- “You must impress others.”
- “You must control every outcome.”
When faced with a decision—about a project, a career move, or a conversation with a colleague—you can practice:
- “Holy Spirit, this decision I give to You.”
- “Show me what is truly helpful.”
- “I am willing to follow, not lead.”
Guidance may show up as:
- A calm sense of “wait” instead of rushing.
- A gentle nudge to be honest rather than strategic.
- An idea that serves the whole rather than just your personal gain.
You begin to discover that *peace, not ego-success, is your true goal*.
3. Illness and the Body
When the body is in pain or illness appears, the ego screams:
- “You are vulnerable.”
- “You are a body and nothing more.”
- “You are being punished or abandoned.”
This lesson doesn’t ask you to deny symptoms, but to *give the instant to God*:
- “Holy Spirit, be in charge of how I see this.”
- “Use this situation to teach me peace, not fear.”
- “Help me remember I am not this body; I am Your beloved Child.”
You may still take medicine, see doctors, or rest—guided by inner wisdom—but the *meaning* of the situation shifts. It becomes a classroom for trust, not a prison of fear.
4. Anxiety and Daily Stress
When anxiety arises—about money, the future, family, the world—the ego insists:
- “If you don’t worry, you’re not taking it seriously.”
- “If you don’t control this, something terrible will happen.”
In that moment, this lesson is like a hand on your heart:
- “This instant of fear I give to You.”
- “Be You in charge of my mind.”
- “I choose to follow You into peace, even if I don’t see how yet.”
You don’t have to feel peaceful immediately. Your part is *willingness*:
- Willingness to pause.
- Willingness to not believe every fearful thought.
- Willingness to let the Holy Spirit reinterpret what you’re seeing.
Over time, you begin to notice:
The more you give the instant to God, the less power anxiety has over you.
III. Overcoming Resistance
This lesson can feel frightening because it touches the deepest ego fear:
“If I let God be in charge, I will lose myself.”
You might notice thoughts like:
- “What if God asks me to give up what I love?”
- “What if I’m guided into something I can’t handle?”
- “What if I hear nothing at all and I’m just fooling myself?”
Let’s gently look at these fears.
1. *Fear of loss*
The Holy Spirit never asks you to lose anything real. He asks you to release what hurts you: guilt, attack, self-judgment, illusions of unworthiness. What remains is what you truly love.
2. *Fear of being overwhelmed*
Guidance comes in *small, kind steps*, suited to where you are. You are never forced. You are invited. You can always say, “I am willing to be willing,” even if full surrender feels too big.
3. *Fear of silence*
Sometimes it seems like you don’t hear guidance. Often, the guidance is already present as:
- A quiet sense of what feels peaceful.
- A gentle pull toward honesty, kindness, or patience.
- A simple knowing: “Don’t rush,” or “Let this go.”
The ego expects a dramatic voice from the sky. The Holy Spirit speaks in *quiet, consistent peace*.
If this lesson feels difficult, you can soften it:
- “Holy Spirit, I’m scared to let go, but I want to want this.”
- “Help me trust that Your way is kinder than mine.”
- “I don’t know how to surrender, but I’m willing to learn.”
Your honesty is itself a form of surrender.
IV. Today’s Practice
Here is a simple way to practice Lesson 365 throughout the day.
1. Morning
1. Sit quietly for a few minutes.
2. Close your eyes and breathe gently.
3. Slowly say the lesson to yourself:
“This holy instant would I give to You.
Be You in charge. For I would follow You,
Certain that Your direction gives me peace.”
4. Then add, in your own words:
- “Holy Spirit, guide my thoughts, words, and actions today.”
- “I place this day in Your hands.”
Rest a moment in stillness. You don’t need to feel anything special. Your willingness is enough.
2. During the Day
Whenever you:
- Feel stressed, angry, anxious, or confused
- Face a decision
- Notice yourself trying to control or fix everything
Pause inwardly and repeat:
- “This holy instant would I give to You.”
- “Be You in charge.”
- “Your direction gives me peace.”
Then:
- Take one gentle breath.
- Ask: “What would You have me do now?”
- Listen for a feeling of peace, a softening, a simple next step.
You may not get words. You may just feel:
- “Say nothing.”
- “Apologize.”
- “Wait.”
- “Be kind to yourself.”
Trust the small, quiet nudges.
3. Evening
Before sleep:
1. Recall your day without judgment.
2. Where you forgot to give the instant to God, simply say:
- “I give those moments to You now.”
3. Repeat the lesson once more, gently:
“This holy instant would I give to You.
Be You in charge. For I would follow You,
Certain that Your direction gives me peace.”
Let the day dissolve into God’s care.
V. Comparable ACIM Lessons
Lesson 365 is closely connected with several key lessons:
- **Lesson 1** – “Nothing I see means anything.”
You began by questioning your interpretations. Lesson 365 completes this by letting the Holy Spirit reinterpret everything.
- **Lesson 34** – “I could see peace instead of this.”
Both lessons invite a choice: ego’s perception or the Holy Spirit’s. Lesson 365 is the full acceptance of that choice.
- **Lesson 71** – “Only God’s plan for salvation will work.”
Lesson 365 is living this: “Be You in charge. I will follow Your plan, not my ego’s.”
- **Lesson 155** – “I will step back and let Him lead the way.”
Almost identical in spirit: a willingness to step out of the driver’s seat.
- **Lesson 189** – “I feel the Love of God within me now.”
The holy instant you give to God is the doorway to feeling that Love.
- **Lesson 324** – “I merely follow, for I would not lead.”
Lesson 365 is the daily, moment-to-moment application of this attitude.
Together, they form a single message:
You are safe in God, and peace comes from letting His Love guide your mind.
VI. Closing Thought
In this final lesson, you are not asked to be perfect. You are simply asked to be willing—to give this instant, just this one, to God.
You do not walk alone. Each time you say, “Be You in charge,” the Holy Spirit answers with a quiet promise:
“I am here. I will lead you gently. And I will always lead you toward peace.”
Rest in that today.
