Lesson 361:

**“This holy instant would I give to You.

Be You in charge. For I would follow You,

Certain that Your direction gives me peace.”**

I. The Core Teaching

This lesson is the first of the final five “same” lessons (361–365). They all share this single idea, as if the Course is saying: We have come to the end. This is all you really need now.

At its heart, Lesson 361 is about *willingness to surrender control of the script* and accept that there is a loving Guide within you who knows the way to peace far better than your ego ever could.

What the Ego Is Trying to Hide

The ego’s basic belief is:

“I am on my own, separate, vulnerable, and I must manage everything myself to survive.”

From this belief come many others:

  • “I must protect myself from other people.”
  • “I must plan, defend, and control to be safe.”
  • “If I don’t worry, I’m being irresponsible.”
  • “If I surrender, I’ll be punished, abandoned, or lose what I want.”

Underneath all this, the ego is hiding one central fear:

**If I let God (or the Holy Spirit) be in charge, I will lose myself.**

The ego tells you that your separate identity is your life, your strength, your uniqueness. It whispers, “If you give this instant to God, you will disappear. You’ll be weak. You’ll be controlled. You’ll be nothing.”

But what the ego is really hiding is the opposite truth:

**If you give this instant to God, the ego disappears, and you remember your true Self—safe, loved, and whole.**

The ego is terrified of this because its existence depends on your belief in separation, fear, and guilt. If you truly experience the peace that comes from letting the Holy Spirit lead, the ego’s entire thought system begins to crumble.

What the Holy Spirit Is Revealing

The Holy Spirit, the Voice for God in your mind, is gently revealing:

  • You are not alone.
  • You are not guilty.
  • You are not a body, and you are not defined by your past.
  • You are loved, guided, and held in perfect safety.
  • Every situation can be used for healing and peace.

When you say, “Be You in charge,” you are not asking some external power to dominate you. You are inviting your *own right mind*, the part of you that never left God, to guide your perception.

The Holy Spirit reveals that:

  • You don’t know what anything is for from the ego’s perspective.
  • You *do* want peace more than you want to be “right.”
  • You can rest from judging, planning, and defending.
  • Peace is not a reward for solving problems; it is the **starting point** from which true solutions come.

To say, “This holy instant would I give to You,” is to say:

“I will stop deciding on my own what this means, what should happen, and who is to blame. I give You this moment to reinterpret for me. I want Your peace more than my opinions.”

II. Applied to Daily Life

Let’s bring this into the kinds of situations you actually face.

1. Relationships

Suppose you are in conflict with a partner, friend, or family member. The ego says:

  • “They’re wrong.”
  • “I must defend myself.”
  • “If I don’t stand my ground, I’ll be hurt.”

In that moment, practicing this lesson looks like:

“This holy instant would I give to You.
Be You in charge of how I see this person.
I would follow You, certain that Your direction gives me peace.”

You pause. You breathe. You admit: “I don’t know how to see this correctly.” You might still say what needs to be said, set boundaries, or walk away—but now you’re asking to be guided by peace, not by fear or attack.

You may notice subtle shifts:

  • Less need to prove you’re right.
  • More willingness to listen.
  • A softening in your heart, even if the other person doesn’t change.
  • The sense that *your peace is not at their mercy*.

2. Work and Career

You might feel pressure, deadlines, competition, or fear of failure. The ego says:

  • “My worth depends on my performance.”
  • “If I don’t push, I’ll fall behind.”
  • “I must control every outcome.”

In the middle of a stressful workday, you can silently say:

“This holy instant would I give to You.
Be You in charge of this meeting, this task, this decision.
I will follow Your direction, because I want peace more than tension.”

You may still work diligently, but the inner posture changes:

  • You become more open to intuitive nudges: “Call this person,” “Wait,” “Try this instead.”
  • You feel less frantic, more focused.
  • You begin to trust that your value is not on the line in every email or project.

3. Illness and the Body

When you’re sick or in pain, the ego rushes in with fear:

  • “This is proof I’m weak and vulnerable.”
  • “This is punishment.”
  • “I’m alone in this.”

Practicing the lesson might sound like:

“This holy instant of fear and pain I give to You.
Be You in charge of how I see this body and this condition.
Let me follow Your direction toward peace.”

This doesn’t mean you ignore medicine, doctors, or practical care. It means you ask:

  • “How can I see this with You?”
  • “How can this be used for healing, not for fear?”

You may notice:

  • Less mental suffering, even if symptoms remain.
  • A sense of being held and accompanied.
  • A shift from “Why is this happening to me?” to “How can this serve my awakening?”

4. Anxiety and Daily Stress

In everyday stress—traffic, money worries, family demands—the ego says:

  • “If I don’t worry, I’m irresponsible.”
  • “If I don’t control, everything will fall apart.”

The lesson invites a radical reversal:

“This holy instant of anxiety I give to You.
Be You in charge of my mind right now.
I will follow Your direction, trusting that peace is possible even here.”

You might notice:

  • A softening of tension in the body.
  • The ability to take the next simple step without catastrophizing.
  • A quiet inner reassurance: “You are not alone in this.”

III. Overcoming Resistance

This lesson can feel threatening to the ego because it directly challenges its central idol: *personal control*.

Common Fears

1. *Fear of losing individuality*

“If I let God be in charge, will I become a blank, passive, lifeless person?”

The truth: The Holy Spirit does not erase your uniqueness; He cleanses it of fear and guilt. Your true Self is radiant, not diminished.

2. *Fear of being punished*

“If I surrender, God will take away what I love or make me suffer.”

This is the old image of a punitive god, which the Course gently undoes. The Holy Spirit’s only “plan” for you is peace, joy, and release from fear.

3. *Fear of irresponsibility*

“If I don’t worry and plan obsessively, I’m being careless.”

The Course is not asking you to stop planning; it is asking you to stop *planning alone*, from fear. You still act, but from guidance and calm, not panic.

4. *Fear of the unknown*

“If I don’t control, I don’t know what will happen.”

This is true—and it is actually the doorway to freedom. The ego’s “known” is suffering, repetition, and conflict. The Holy Spirit leads you into a different experience, one that cannot be fully explained in advance but is always loving.

Gently Meeting Your Resistance

You don’t have to force yourself to trust. You can simply *notice* your resistance and bring it into the light:

“Holy Spirit, I’m afraid to let You be in charge.
I’m afraid of losing control, of being hurt, of being wrong.
Help me be willing to be willing.”

You are not judged for your fear. The Holy Spirit uses even your resistance as material for healing. Your *tiny willingness* is enough.

IV. Today’s Practice

Here is a simple way to practice Lesson 361 throughout the day.

1. Morning Quiet Time (5–15 minutes)

1. Sit comfortably, close your eyes, and take a few gentle breaths.

2. Slowly repeat the lesson, letting the words sink in:

“This holy instant would I give to You.
Be You in charge. For I would follow You,
Certain that Your direction gives me peace.”

3. Say it in your own words, if you like:

  • “I give You this day.”
  • “Guide my thoughts, my words, my choices.”
  • “I don’t want to lead myself into fear anymore.”

4. Imagine placing your day—its people, tasks, worries—into a gentle light in your mind. Say:

  • “All of this I give to You. Decide for me, and let me follow peace.”

5. Sit in silence for a few minutes. You don’t need to hear words. Just rest in the intention: I am not alone. I am willing to be led.

2. During the Day: Short Pauses

Whenever you feel:

  • Tension
  • Anger
  • Confusion
  • Anxiety
  • Temptation to judge or attack

Pause, even briefly, and say inwardly:

“This holy instant would I give to You.
Be You in charge of how I see this.”

If you can, add:

“I want peace more than I want to be right.”

Then, wait a moment. Breathe. Let a small space open in your mind where another way of seeing can enter.

3. Before Any Decision

When facing a choice—big or small—say:

“Holy Spirit, decide for me.
I want what leads to peace for everyone, including me.”

You may not hear a voice, but you might notice:

  • A sense of ease around one option.
  • A quiet inner “no” or “not yet.”
  • Or simply a release of urgency, allowing you to take the next gentle step.

4. Evening Reflection

At the end of the day, take a few minutes to look back:

  • Where did I remember to give the instant to the Holy Spirit?
  • How did that feel?
  • Where did I forget and try to control everything myself?

Then say:

“I give this whole day to You.
Correct my perception wherever I chose fear.
Thank You for every moment I let You lead.”

No guilt, no self-attack. Just gentle noticing and gratitude.

V. Comparable ACIM Lessons

Lesson 361 is deeply connected with several earlier lessons:

  • **Lesson 71: “Only God’s plan for salvation will work.”**

Both lessons invite you to stop following the ego’s plan (control, defense, attack) and accept a different plan based on forgiveness and peace.

  • **Lesson 155: “I will step back and let Him lead the way.”**

Very close in spirit: you step back from ego leadership and let the Holy Spirit guide.

  • **Lesson 135: “If I defend myself I am attacked.”**

Shows that self-directed control and defense actually increase fear. Lesson 361 offers the alternative: let the Holy Spirit be in charge.

  • **Lesson 185: “I want the peace of God.”**

Lesson 361 is the practical expression of that desire: if you truly want peace, you must be willing to let the One who knows peace guide you.

  • **Lesson 253: “My Self is ruler of the universe.”**

Reminds you that your true Self, not the ego, is in charge in reality. Lesson 361 is the daily choice to align with that Self.

VI. Closing Thought

You are not being asked to surrender to a harsh, distant power. You are being invited to rest in the Love that has always held you.

Today, you do not have to figure everything out.

You do not have to carry the weight of the world alone.

Just this:

“This holy instant would I give to You.
Be You in charge. For I would follow You,
Certain that Your direction gives me peace.”

Let this be enough for today. Peace will quietly show you that it was.
