Lesson 168: “Your grace is given me. I claim it now.”
I. The Core Teaching
This lesson is about accepting what has already been given you by God. It is not about earning grace, becoming worthy of it, or convincing God to give it. It is about remembering and receiving what has never been taken away.
In the Course, “grace” is another word for the state of your true Self as God created you: innocent, safe, loved, and forever joined with Him. Grace is not an event; it is your natural condition. To “claim it now” means to stop arguing with the truth about yourself.
What is the ego trying to hide?
The ego’s entire strategy is built on one central lie:
“You are separate, guilty, and on your own.”
From this lie come all the others:
- You must protect yourself.
- You must prove your worth.
- You must defend your identity.
- You must fear loss, death, rejection, and punishment.
- You must bargain for love and safety.
The ego is terrified of grace because grace undoes all these beliefs at once. If grace is real, then:
- You are not guilty.
- You are not a body.
- You are not alone.
- You have never truly been harmed.
- You cannot lose what God gave you.
The ego survives by convincing you that you are what you are not: a vulnerable, isolated self in a fragile body, in a dangerous world. Grace says: “That is not you.” The ego says: “If you listen to that, you will be destroyed.” So it hides grace behind layers of fear, distraction, and self-judgment.
What is the Holy Spirit revealing?
The Holy Spirit, the Voice for God in your mind, gently reveals the opposite of the ego’s story:
1. *You are already forgiven.*
Not because God decided to overlook your sins, but because in truth you never changed your Self. The “sins” were dreams arising from a mistaken identity. Grace means your innocence is not a future goal; it is a present fact.
2. *You are still as God created you.*
Not broken, not stained, not damaged. The Holy Spirit keeps repeating this in different forms: you are spirit, not a body; love, not fear; eternal, not temporary. Grace is the memory of this.
3. *Nothing real can be threatened.*
What God created in you cannot be harmed by time, illness, loss, or death. Grace is the awareness that your true Self is beyond all of these.
4. *You are not alone.*
Grace is shared. The Holy Spirit reveals that your mind is joined with every mind, and with God. You are held in a vast, loving Wholeness that never lets you go.
To “claim grace” is to say:
“I am willing to accept the truth about myself instead of the story I made up.”
II. Applied to Daily Life
Let’s bring this down into the places where you actually feel fear and struggle.
1. Relationships
*Ego’s story:*
“I must protect myself. Others can hurt me. I must judge them to stay safe. I must control them to feel secure.”
*Grace says:*
“You and your brother are the same beloved Son of God. Only love is real between you. Everything else is a call for love or an expression of love.”
Example:
You feel hurt by a partner, friend, or family member. The ego rushes in with blame, defense, and attack. Grace invites a pause:
- “In grace, I am safe. I do not need to defend my worth.”
- “In grace, my brother is innocent in truth, even if confused in form.”
- “In grace, I can listen instead of attack. I can ask for guidance instead of reacting.”
This doesn’t mean you tolerate abuse or deny your feelings. It means you let the Holy Spirit reinterpret what is happening. You might still set boundaries, leave a situation, or speak firmly—but from peace, not from fear.
2. Work and Money
*Ego’s story:*
“My security comes from my job, my income, my status. I must strive and worry to survive.”
*Grace says:*
“Your security comes from God. The form of your livelihood may change, but your Source does not. You are carried.”
Example:
You’re anxious about a deadline, a performance review, or finances. Grace invites you to remember:
- “My worth is not measured by productivity.”
- “I am not alone in this; the Holy Spirit can guide every decision.”
- “I can ask, ‘What would You have me do?’ instead of pushing from fear.”
From grace, you may still work hard, show up fully, and be responsible—but the inner driver is different. It is inspiration instead of desperation.
3. Illness and the Body
*Ego’s story:*
“I am this body. If it is sick, I am weak, failing, or punished. Illness proves I am vulnerable.”
*Grace says:*
“You are not a body. You are free. The body is a communication device, not your identity. Nothing that happens to it can change what you are.”
Example:
You experience pain, a diagnosis, or ongoing symptoms. Grace does not ask you to deny the experience or skip over your feelings. It gently adds another layer of awareness:
- “This body can feel pain, but my Self cannot be harmed.”
- “I can bring my fear and sadness into the light of grace.”
- “I can ask for a miracle in perception: ‘Help me see this as You see it.’”
You may still seek medical help, rest, or treatment. The difference is that you are not only a frightened patient; you are a holy Son of God, temporarily experiencing a condition in a dream.
4. Anxiety and Daily Stress
*Ego’s story:*
“Something is going to go wrong. I must stay tense and vigilant. If I relax, I’ll lose control.”
*Grace says:*
“Nothing real can be threatened. You are held. You are guided. You can rest in God, even while you move through your day.”
Example:
You feel a wave of anxiety about the future, about your children, about the world. Grace invites a shift:
- “This fear is not my true Self; it is a passing cloud in my mind.”
- “Underneath this fear, I am safe in God.”
- “I can breathe, pause, and let the Holy Spirit reinterpret this situation.”
You don’t have to “fix” all your anxiety at once. You just offer small pockets of willingness: “I claim Your grace now, even if I still feel afraid.”
III. Overcoming Resistance
This lesson can feel challenging because it asks you to accept a level of love and innocence that the ego insists you don’t deserve.
Common forms of resistance:
1. *“I’m not worthy.”*
The ego says: “If you knew what I’ve done, you wouldn’t talk about grace.”
The Course says: Grace is not a reward for good behavior; it is the truth of what you are. Nothing you did in a dream can change God’s creation.
2. *Fear of losing control.*
“If I really accept grace, will I become passive, irresponsible, or foolish?”
In reality, grace makes you more sane, more loving, and more clear. You don’t lose control; you lose the illusion that your fearful control was ever protecting you.
3. *Fear of losing your identity.*
The ego whispers, “Without your guilt, your stories, your grievances—who will you be?”
The answer is: You will be as you truly are—limitless love. The fear is only of the unknown, not of something actually harmful.
4. *Doubt about God.*
“Can I really trust that there is a loving Source that has already given me everything?”
The Course gently says: You don’t have to force belief. Just be willing to experiment. Try claiming grace in small moments and see how your mind softens.
You are not asked to have no fear. You are asked to bring your fear to the altar of grace and say: “Help me see this differently.”
IV. Today’s Practice
Here is a simple way to practice Lesson 168 throughout the day.
1. Morning Quiet Time (5–15 minutes)
- Sit comfortably, close your eyes, and take a few slow breaths.
- Say slowly, with as much sincerity as you can:
*“Your grace is given me. I claim it now.”*
- Let the words sink in. Imagine you are standing before a loving Presence that has been holding a gift out to you forever. You finally say, “Yes.”
- You might add:
- “I do not need to earn it.”
- “I do not need to understand it.”
- “I only need to accept it.”
- Then be still. You don’t need to feel anything special. Just rest in willingness. If thoughts come, gently repeat:
“Your grace is given me. I claim it now.”
2. Short Practice Periods During the Day
Several times an hour, or whenever you remember, pause for a few seconds:
- Take one conscious breath.
- Silently say:
“Your grace is given me. I claim it now.”
or
“In this moment, I choose grace instead of fear.”
Apply it specifically:
- When upset with someone: “Your grace is given me *and my brother*. I claim it now for us both.”
- When anxious about something: “Grace, not fear, is my reality. Help me remember.”
3. When Distress Arises
Whenever you feel anger, sadness, worry, or guilt:
1. Acknowledge the feeling honestly: “I feel afraid (angry, sad, guilty).”
2. Say:
“This feeling is not the truth of what I am.
Your grace is given me. I claim it now.”
3. Ask: “Holy Spirit, how would You have me see this?”
Wait a moment in quiet. You may receive a gentle idea, a softening, or simply a little more peace. That is grace entering your awareness.
4. Evening Reflection
Before sleep, review your day:
- Where did you remember grace?
- Where did you forget?
Without judgment, offer the whole day to the Holy Spirit:
“Where I remembered grace, thank You.
Where I forgot, I offer my forgetfulness to You.
Your grace is given me. I claim it now, even in my dreams.”
V. Comparable ACIM Lessons
This lesson is closely connected with several others:
- **Lesson 62: “Forgiveness is my function as the light of the world.”**
Forgiveness is how you make room in your mind to experience grace. As you release guilt and grievances, grace becomes more obvious.
- **Lesson 93: “Light and joy and peace abide in me.”**
This lesson states what grace is in you: light, joy, and peace that are already there, waiting to be acknowledged.
- **Lesson 127: “There is no love but God’s.”**
Grace is the experience of God’s Love as the only reality. All other forms of “love” that involve fear or bargaining are illusions.
- **Lesson 132: “I loose the world from all I thought it was.”**
To claim grace, you must be willing to let go of your fearful picture of the world. This lesson prepares the mind for that release.
- **Lesson 163: “There is no death. The Son of God is free.”**
Grace is the recognition that death is not real and cannot touch what you are. Lesson 168 continues this theme by inviting you to accept your freedom now.
VI. Closing Thought
Grace is not far away, and it is not reserved for saints. It is the quiet truth of you, waiting just beneath every fear, every story, every defense. You do not have to perfect yourself to receive it. You only have to be willing to say, even softly:
“Your grace is given me. I claim it now.”
Let that be enough today.
