*ACIM Lesson 357*
*“Truth answers every call we make to God,
Responding first with miracles, and then
Returning unto us to be itself.”*
I. The Core Teaching
This lesson is about trust: the trust that every sincere call to God is answered, and that the answer always comes as a miracle. It also tells us something very deep about what a “call to God” really is, and what “truth” really does.
In the Course, a “call to God” is not just a formal prayer or spiritual practice. It is any genuine movement in your mind away from fear and toward love, even if you don’t recognize it as such. A moment of honest humility, a plea for help, a quiet willingness to see differently, a tired “There must be a better way” — all of these are calls to God.
The lesson says that truth answers every call. Not some, not the “worthy” ones, not the “spiritual” ones — every call. That means your smallest, most faltering willingness is never ignored. The instant you turn even slightly toward love, the Holy Spirit responds.
What is the ego trying to hide?
The ego wants you to believe:
1. *Your calls are not really heard.*
It whispers, “You’re alone. God is distant. Your prayers are weak or wrong. You don’t deserve an answer.”
2. *If an answer doesn’t show up in the form you want, there was no answer.*
The ego equates “answer” with “getting what I think I need in the way I think I need it.” If that doesn’t happen, it says, “See? No one is listening.”
3. *You are separate from God and from others.*
It insists that your pain is private, your guilt is real, and your mind is isolated. It hides from you the fact that every mind is joined, and that to call on God is to call on the truth in all minds.
4. *Miracles are rare, dramatic events.*
The ego wants miracles to be spectacular, external changes so that you can keep believing that the world is the cause and your mind is the effect. It hides the simple fact that a miracle is a shift in perception from fear to love.
What the ego is really trying to hide is this:
*You are never alone, never unheard, and never without help.*
If you truly accepted that, the ego’s entire thought system of fear and isolation would collapse.
What is the Holy Spirit revealing?
The Holy Spirit reveals a very different picture:
1. *Every call to God is a call to truth within your own mind.*
You are not reaching out to something far away. You are turning toward what is already in you. The Holy Spirit is the memory of God in your mind.
2. *The first response is always a miracle.*
Before anything appears to change externally, your mind is offered a new way of seeing. That new perception — even if you only accept a little of it — is the miracle.
3. *Truth “returns to you to be itself.”*
This is a beautiful line. It means that when you call on God, you are really calling on your own true Self. Truth is not something added to you; it is what you are. The answer to your call is the remembrance of your own innocence, your own holiness, your own unbroken union with God.
4. *There is no such thing as an unanswered prayer.*
The form may not match your expectations, but the content is always the same: a gentle invitation to release fear, to forgive, to rest in God’s Love.
So this lesson is saying:
When you call on God, the Holy Spirit answers with a shift in perception (a miracle), and as you accept that shift, you remember who you truly are (truth returning to you to be itself).
II. Applied to Daily Life
Let’s bring this down into very concrete situations.
1. Relationships
Suppose you’re in conflict with a partner, friend, or family member. You feel hurt, misunderstood, or angry. The ego says, “They are the problem. They must change. You are justified in your resentment.”
A call to God might look like this:
“I don’t know how to see this. Help me see this person as You see them. Help me see myself as You see me.”
*The miracle-response* might be:
- A softening in your heart.
- A sudden awareness that they are afraid, not evil.
- A willingness to pause before attacking.
- A quiet sense that your worth is not actually threatened.
You might still disagree with them. The situation may not instantly “fix.” But inside, something has shifted. That shift is the miracle. As you stay with it, you begin to remember: “I am not this anger. I am not this role. I am the one who can choose peace.” That is truth returning to you to be itself.
2. Work and Money
You’re anxious about your job, performance, or finances. The ego says, “Your value depends on success. You are at the mercy of the world. You must control everything.”
A call to God might be:
“Holy Spirit, show me another way to see my work and my security. I want to trust You instead of my fear.”
*The miracle-response* could be:
- A new idea about how to handle a situation.
- A sense of calm that comes out of nowhere.
- A recognition that your real safety is in God, not in numbers or titles.
- A gentle nudge to be honest, to rest, or to ask for help.
The outer circumstances may or may not change quickly. But as you let the miracle in, you start to feel less like a frightened worker in a hostile world and more like a beloved Child of God temporarily playing a role. That remembrance is truth returning to you.
3. Illness and Pain
You’re dealing with physical illness or chronic pain. The ego says, “You are a body. You are weak, vulnerable, and at the mercy of sickness.”
A call to God might be:
“God, I don’t understand this. I feel afraid. Please help me see this through Your eyes. Help me remember I am not a body; I am Your Son.”
*The miracle-response* may show up as:
- A deeper compassion for yourself and others.
- A sense of being held, even in discomfort.
- A loosening of the belief that your identity is your body.
- Guidance about treatment, rest, or support.
The Course never asks you to deny your experience, but to reinterpret it. The body may still need care, but you begin to feel that your Self is untouched. That is truth gently shining through the appearances.
4. Anxiety and Daily Stress
You feel overwhelmed by tasks, news, family demands, or inner pressure. The ego says, “You are on your own. If you don’t hold everything together, it will all fall apart.”
A call to God might be:
“I feel overwhelmed. I don’t know how to handle all this. Please order my day for me. Show me what really matters.”
*The miracle-response* might be:
- A surprising clarity about what to do first.
- The courage to say “no” where needed.
- A sense that you are carried, not pushing alone.
- A moment of quiet in the middle of chaos.
As you accept this, you remember: “I am not the manager of the universe. I am a mind that can rest in God.” That remembrance is truth returning to you.
III. Overcoming Resistance
Why might this lesson be difficult?
1. *Fear that God won’t answer.*
Many of us secretly fear that if we really lean on God, we will be disappointed. The ego uses past hurts and delays as “proof” that we are alone.
2. *Attachment to specific outcomes.*
We often want a very particular form of answer: this person must change, this job must come, this symptom must disappear. When the form doesn’t match, we think, “No answer.”
3. *Fear of losing control.*
If truth answers every call, then our control is not the real power. The ego is terrified of surrender because it believes control is safety.
4. *Guilt and unworthiness.*
We may feel, “I’ve made too many mistakes. I don’t deserve help.” The ego clings to guilt as if it were honesty.
How to gently address these:
- **You do not have to trust perfectly.**
The Course never demands perfect faith. It asks for willingness. “Help me be willing to be willing” is enough to begin.
- **You can question the form, but trust the content.**
You are allowed to say, “I don’t like how this looks.” But you can also whisper, “Still, I trust that somewhere in this is an invitation to greater peace.”
- **You are not asked to give up control all at once.**
Start small. Offer one situation, one relationship, one fear to the Holy Spirit. Let the experience of being helped slowly erode your fear.
- **Your worth is not up for debate.**
The very fact that you can call on God proves your worth. God would not place His Voice in an unworthy mind. Your guilt is a dream; your holiness is reality.
IV. Today’s Practice
Here is a simple way to practice Lesson 357 today.
1. Morning Quiet (5–10 minutes)
- Sit comfortably and close your eyes.
- Gently repeat the idea:
**“Truth answers every call I make to God,
responding first with miracles,
and then returning unto me to be itself.”**
- Let the words sink in. You don’t need to “figure them out.” Just allow them to rest in your mind.
Then say inwardly:
- “Holy Spirit, I am willing to see that every sincere call I make today will be answered. Help me notice the miracles.”
Sit in silence for a few moments. If worries or situations come to mind, quietly place them in the light of this idea: “Truth will answer this.”
2. During the Day: In Every Difficulty
Whenever you feel upset, anxious, or confused, pause for a moment and say:
- “This is a call to God.
Truth will answer me with a miracle.”
Then ask:
- “Holy Spirit, what is the miracle here?
How would You have me see this?”
You may not hear words, but watch for:
- A softening of tension.
- A new way of looking at the person or situation.
- A sense of being less alone.
Even if you feel nothing, trust that the answer has been given. Your acceptance may unfold gently over time.
3. Short Reminders
Set a few reminders (on your phone, or linked to daily routines like meals or brushing your teeth):
- “Every call I make to God is answered.”
- “The first answer is always a miracle in my mind.”
- “Truth is returning to me to be itself.”
Let these be brief, quiet recollections, not forced affirmations.
4. Evening Reflection
Before sleep, review your day:
- Where did you call on God, even in a small way?
- Can you see any moments where your perception softened, even slightly?
- Thank the Holy Spirit for every miracle, seen and unseen.
You might end with:
- “Truth has answered every call I made today.
I rest now in that truth.”
V. Comparable ACIM Lessons
Several lessons closely echo the spirit of Lesson 357:
- **Lesson 58 (Review of 10):** *“My thoughts are images that I have made.”*
Connected because miracles shift perception from the ego’s images to truth.
- **Lesson 91:** *“Miracles are seen in light.”*
This explains that miracles come from a new way of seeing, not from changing external forms.
- **Lesson 44:** *“God is the light in which I see.”*
The “truth” that answers your call is this light in your mind.
- **Lesson 70:** *“My salvation comes from me.”*
Closely related, as it points out that the answer is within your own mind, not outside.
- **Lesson 186:** *“Salvation of the world depends on me.”*
Each time you accept a miracle, you accept it for all minds, because minds are joined.
All these lessons support the idea that salvation is an inner shift, always available, always answered.
VI. Closing Thought
You have never called on God in vain. Not once. Even when you felt nothing, even when you doubted, the answer was given in the form of a miracle — a quiet invitation to see with love instead of fear.
Today, you are simply learning to notice that answer, to trust it a little more, and to let truth come home to your mind and be itself.
You are not alone in this. The Holy Spirit walks with you in every step, and every sincere call you make is already surrounded by Love.
