I have no cause for anger or for fear, For You surround me. And in every need That I perceive, Your grace suffices me.

Here is the idea for *A Course in Miracles Lesson 348*:
**“I have no cause for anger or for fear,
For You surround me. And in every need
That I perceive, Your grace suffices me.”**
I. The Core Teaching
This lesson is a quiet, gentle declaration of safety. It says, in essence:
- I am always held in God.
- Therefore, I am never truly threatened.
- Therefore, all my anger and fear are *without real cause*.
- And every need I think I have is already answered in God’s grace.
The Course is not saying you shouldn’t feel anger or fear. It is saying that, at the deepest level, there is *no real cause for them, because nothing real can be threatened. The “cause” we think we see—someone’s behavior, a diagnosis, a bank balance, a world event—is not the true cause of our distress. It is only the screen* onto which the ego projects its own inner conflict.
What is the ego trying to hide?
The ego’s entire survival depends on convincing you that:
1. You are separate from God and from others.
2. You are vulnerable, lacking, and at risk.
3. The world outside you is the cause of your inner state.
4. Anger and fear are justified and necessary for your protection.
So the ego uses every upsetting situation to “prove” that you are not safe:
- Someone criticizes you → “See? You’re not loved. You must defend.”
- You get sick → “See? You’re a body, weak and breakable.”
- Money is tight → “See? You are dependent on the world for survival.”
- A relationship changes → “See? You can be abandoned and hurt.”
Underneath all this, the ego is hiding one simple fact:
*If you are truly surrounded by God, the ego is nothing.*
If you are already held in perfect safety, the ego’s stories of danger and defense fall apart. If every need is already met at the level of spirit, then the ego’s identity as the “manager” of your life becomes unnecessary. It is terrified of this.
So it keeps your attention on appearances—on the body, on circumstances, on other people’s behavior—so you will not turn inward and discover that your safety and supply are already given.
What is the Holy Spirit revealing?
The Holy Spirit, the Voice for God in your mind, gently reveals:
1. *You are surrounded by Love.* Not symbolically, but literally—your true Being is in God and cannot leave.
2. *Your fear is based on a false interpretation.* You are not wrong for feeling it, but you are mistaken about what it means.
3. *Your anger is a call for help.* It is not a weapon you need; it is a signal that you have forgotten who you are.
4. *Grace is already present.* You do not have to earn it. It is not withheld. It is the natural state of your relationship with God.
The Holy Spirit does not deny your experience in the world. Instead, He reinterprets it:
- Where the ego sees attack, He sees a call for love.
- Where the ego sees loss, He sees an opportunity to remember you cannot lose what is real.
- Where the ego sees danger, He sees a chance to trust in a deeper protection.
- Where the ego sees unmet needs, He sees the invitation to rely on God rather than on form.
So this lesson is a *shift of cause*:
- From “the world is causing my fear”
- To “my belief in separation is causing my fear, and that belief is not true.”
II. Applied to Daily Life
Let’s bring this into very ordinary situations.
1. Relationships
Suppose your partner is distant, or a friend doesn’t respond to your message. The ego says:
- “They don’t care.”
- “You’re not important.”
- “You must protect yourself. Get angry. Withdraw. Attack or punish.”
You feel hurt, angry, maybe afraid of being abandoned.
This lesson invites a different inner response:
- “I feel fear and anger, but I have **no real cause** for either, because I am surrounded by God’s Love. My worth is not at stake here.”
- “Their behavior cannot change what I am in God.”
- “My need for love and safety is already met in Him. I can bring my feelings to the Holy Spirit and let Him show me how to see this differently.”
You might still speak honestly, set boundaries, or ask for clarity. But you do it from a place of remembering:
“I am safe in God. I am not a beggar for love. I am not at the mercy of anyone’s mood.”
The anger softens, because you are no longer using the situation as proof of your unworthiness.
2. Work and Money
You lose a client, or a project fails, or you worry about bills. The ego says:
- “You’re in danger.”
- “You’re failing.”
- “You must worry constantly to stay safe.”
This lesson invites you to pause and say:
- “I feel fear, but I have **no real cause** for fear, because God surrounds me.”
- “My true Source is not this job, this client, or this paycheck. My Source is God.”
- “Every need I perceive is already answered in His grace. I am willing to be shown how.”
You still take practical steps—apply for jobs, make calls, adjust your budget—but you do it with a different inner posture: less panic, more trust. You open to guidance instead of being driven by anxiety.
3. Illness and Pain
When the body hurts or a diagnosis comes, the ego shouts:
- “You are a body, and the body is in danger.”
- “You are weak and could be destroyed.”
This lesson does not tell you to deny symptoms or avoid medical care. It invites you to remember:
- “I am feeling fear, but my reality in God is untouched by this.”
- “I am spirit, surrounded by Love, and that is what I truly am.”
- “In every need I perceive—healing, comfort, help—His grace suffices me.”
You may still take medicine, see doctors, rest. But you practice not making the body your identity or your god. You let the situation become a classroom in which you learn trust, gentleness, and inner peace.
4. Anxiety and Daily Stress
Traffic, deadlines, family demands, news headlines—these can all stir up a low-level hum of fear and irritation. The ego thrives on this background noise; it keeps you too distracted to remember God.
This lesson becomes a simple, portable prayer:
- “I feel tension, but I have no cause for anger or fear.”
- “I am surrounded by God right now, even in this traffic, even at this meeting.”
- “Every need I think I have—time, approval, control—is already answered in His grace.”
Over time, this begins to loosen the habit of living in a constant state of subtle alarm.
III. Overcoming Resistance
Why might this lesson feel difficult or even threatening?
1. *It challenges the belief that your feelings are caused by the world.*
The ego says, “I am upset because of that.” This lesson says, “I am upset because I have forgotten I am surrounded by God.” That can feel like your story is being taken away.
2. *It seems to minimize your problems.*
You might think, “But my situation really is serious. How can there be no cause for fear?” The Course is not trivializing your pain; it is distinguishing between the level of form (where problems appear) and the level of spirit (where you are eternally safe).
3. *It threatens the ego’s identity as protector.*
If God’s grace truly suffices, the ego is out of a job. It will argue that you are being irresponsible if you trust God. It will say, “If you don’t worry, you won’t be prepared.”
4. *It can stir up fear of letting go.*
Letting go of anger and fear can feel like becoming defenseless and exposed. The ego equates peace with vulnerability. The Holy Spirit gently shows that peace is your true defense, because it aligns you with the strength of God.
If you notice resistance, you don’t need to fight it. You can simply say:
- “Part of me is afraid to trust this.”
- “Holy Spirit, help me. I am willing to be willing.”
The Course never asks you to leap over your fear. It asks you to *bring* your fear to the Light, honestly and without judgment.
IV. Today’s Practice
Here is a simple way to practice Lesson 348 throughout the day.
1. Morning Quiet Time (5–15 minutes)
Sit comfortably, close your eyes if you like, and say slowly:
“I have no cause for anger or for fear,
For You surround me.
And in every need that I perceive,
Your grace suffices me.”
Then:
1. *Acknowledge honestly*:
- “Father, I do feel anger about… (name it).”
- “I do feel fear about… (name it).”
2. *Offer it*:
- “I place these in Your Hands.
Show me that I am surrounded by You even here.”
3. *Sit in quiet* for a few minutes.
You don’t need to force any feeling. Just let the words be like a soft blanket over your mind.
2. During the Day: Short Pauses
Whenever you feel a spike of irritation, fear, or stress:
1. Pause, take a gentle breath.
2. Silently say:
- “I feel afraid (or angry), but I have no real cause for this, because God surrounds me.”
- “In this need I perceive, His grace suffices me.”
3. Ask:
- “Holy Spirit, how would You have me see this?”
- Then proceed with whatever needs to be done, as calmly as you can.
3. In a Specific Problem
Choose one situation that is bothering you today. Write it down if you like.
Then say:
- “In this situation with ______, I believe I have cause for anger or fear.
Yet the truth is, I am surrounded by God.
I am willing to see that His grace is enough here.”
Spend a few minutes imagining this situation bathed in light, held in a Presence that is kind and wise. You don’t have to know the outcome. Just let it be held.
4. Evening Reflection
Before sleep, review your day gently:
- Where did you remember this idea?
- Where did you forget?
No blame. Just notice. Then say:
“Even where I forgot, You surrounded me.
Thank You that Your grace has met every need,
whether I recognized it or not.”
V. Comparable ACIM Lessons
Several Course lessons echo and support Lesson 348:
- **Lesson 26: “My attack thoughts are attacking my invulnerability.”**
Shows that anger and attack thoughts obscure your inherent safety, just as Lesson 348 reminds you there is no real cause for anger or fear.
- **Lesson 34: “I could see peace instead of this.”**
Offers the choice to reinterpret any situation—exactly what we are doing when we say, “I have no cause for anger or fear.”
- **Lesson 47: “God is the Strength in which I trust.”**
Closely related: if God is your strength, then His grace truly suffices in every need.
- **Lesson 70: “My salvation comes from me.”**
Shifts the cause of peace from the world to your mind’s choice, just as Lesson 348 shifts the cause of fear away from external events.
- **Lesson 153: “In my defenselessness my safety lies.”**
Teaches that you don’t need anger or fear as defenses; your safety is in God, who surrounds you.
- **Lesson 163: “There is no death. The Son of God is free.”**
Goes to the root of fear: the belief in death. If there is no death, there is truly no cause for fear.
These lessons together build a consistent message:
Your safety, peace, and supply are in God, not in the changing forms of the world.
VI. Closing Thought
Let this lesson be a gentle whisper today, not a demand:
“I have no cause for anger or for fear,
For You surround me.
And in every need that I perceive,
Your grace suffices me.”
You do not have to feel this perfectly for it to be true.
You only need a little willingness to let it be more true to you than your fear.
You are surrounded, even when you forget.
You are held, even when you feel alone.
You are supplied, even when you see lack.
Rest, just for a moment, in the possibility that this is so.
