Lesson 257 – “Let me remember what my purpose is.”
The Core Teaching
This lesson is a gentle but radical reminder: you have only one real purpose, and it is not what the world has taught you.
The Course tells us that our true purpose is forgiveness, which really means: to remember the truth, to see with Christ’s vision instead of the ego’s, and to let the light of love replace our fearful interpretations. In simpler words:
*My purpose is to remember I am as God created me, and to see that same innocence in everyone.*
The ego has given you many substitute purposes:
- To protect yourself
- To get your needs met
- To prove you are right
- To succeed, impress, or control
- To avoid pain and seek pleasure
These all revolve around the belief that you are a separate, vulnerable self, living in a dangerous world, trying to survive. The ego’s main goal is to keep this identity intact. It wants you to forget your true purpose because remembering it would dissolve the ego’s entire story.
What is the ego trying to hide?
1. *That you are not a body.*
The ego insists you are a body, limited by time, space, age, and circumstances. If you accept this, fear becomes “reasonable” and attack seems “necessary.” The ego hides the fact that your mind is the source of your experience, and that you are spirit, untouched by the world’s changes.
2. *That you are innocent.*
The ego’s survival depends on guilt. It whispers: “You are not good enough. You have failed. You have hurt others. You are unworthy.” It projects this guilt outward so you see others as guilty too. This keeps the cycle of judgment, defense, and attack alive.
3. *That you are already home in God.*
If you remembered that you are still as God created you—whole, loved, and safe—the entire drama of the world would lose its seriousness. The ego hides the fact that the separation from God never truly happened. It is a dream, and you are dreaming.
What is the Holy Spirit revealing?
The Holy Spirit, the quiet Voice for God in your mind, gently reminds you:
- Your only real purpose is to wake up from the dream of separation.
- Every situation is an opportunity to choose again: fear or love, ego or Spirit.
- Your function is forgiveness—not as sacrifice, but as release. You release illusions and remember truth.
- You are not here to fix the world, but to see it differently.
When you say, “Let me remember what my purpose is,” you are really saying:
“Let me not use this day to reinforce my ego’s story.
Let me use it to remember love.
Let me see every person and situation as a classroom for forgiveness and peace.”
Applied to Daily Life
Let’s bring this down into the details of your day.
Relationships
Suppose you’re in a tense relationship—romantic, family, or friendship. The ego’s purpose might be:
- To win the argument
- To defend your position
- To make them see how wrong they are
- To protect yourself from being hurt again
When you remember your true purpose, the focus shifts:
- Instead of “How do I prove I’m right?” you ask, “How do I remember peace here?”
- Instead of “How do I punish them?” you ask, “What is this showing me about my own unhealed fear?”
- Instead of “How can I get them to love me?” you ask, “How can I extend love, even if only in my mind?”
You might still speak up, set boundaries, or walk away from harmful situations. But the inner purpose is different: you are not trying to attack or condemn; you are trying to remember the shared innocence beneath the conflict.
Work and Career
At work, the ego’s purpose is often:
- To get recognition
- To be better than others
- To secure status, money, and safety
When you remember your purpose, work becomes a spiritual classroom:
- That difficult coworker becomes an opportunity to practice seeing beyond behavior to the call for love.
- A stressful deadline becomes a chance to choose trust instead of panic.
- A failure or criticism becomes a moment to remember: “My worth is not defined by this. My purpose is to remember who I am, not to build an ego identity.”
You still do your tasks, answer emails, attend meetings—but underneath, you are asking:
*“How can I bring forgiveness, patience, and kindness into this situation?”*
Illness and the Body
When the body is sick or in pain, the ego’s purpose is:
- To prove you are a victim
- To reinforce fear and helplessness
- To make the body the center of your identity
Remembering your purpose doesn’t mean denying the body’s condition. You still take medicine, see doctors, rest. But you add another layer:
- “I will not use this illness to prove I am separate and weak.”
- “I will use this as an opportunity to trust, to release fear, and to remember I am spirit, not a body.”
- “My purpose is not to be a perfect body, but to remember perfect love.”
Even in pain, you can ask the Holy Spirit:
“What would You have me see here? How can this serve my awakening?”
Anxiety and Daily Stress
When you feel anxious—about money, family, future—the ego’s purpose is to keep you spinning:
- “If I worry enough, I’ll be safe.”
- “If I control everything, I’ll be okay.”
The Holy Spirit gently offers another purpose:
- “Let this be a moment to practice trust.”
- “Let this be a moment to remember I am not alone.”
- “Let this be a moment to choose peace instead of fear.”
You might still take practical steps—budgeting, planning, asking for help—but the inner purpose is no longer fear management. It is *fear release*.
Overcoming Resistance
This lesson can feel threatening to the ego because it implies:
- Your usual goals are not your real purpose.
- Your identity as a separate, struggling self is not the truth.
- You are being invited to let go of control and let a higher wisdom guide you.
Common resistances:
1. *“If I let go of my usual goals, I’ll become passive or irresponsible.”*
The Course never asks you to stop functioning in the world. It asks you to change the inner teacher you follow. You still act, but from peace rather than fear. You become more, not less, truly responsible because you are aligned with love.
2. *“If I forgive and remember my purpose, I’ll be taken advantage of.”*
Forgiveness does not mean tolerating abuse or denying your feelings. It means you refuse to see anyone, including yourself, as guilty and unworthy. You can say “no” from love, not from hatred. Boundaries can be set gently, without attack.
3. *“I don’t know how to live with only one purpose.”*
You don’t have to figure it out alone. The Holy Spirit will reinterpret everything for you, step by step. Your part is willingness: “Let me remember what my purpose is, and let me be guided.”
If you feel fear or sadness as you read this, that is okay. It only means a part of you is afraid of losing its old identity. You are not being asked to sacrifice anything real—only illusions that have never brought you lasting peace.
Today’s Practice
Here is a simple way to practice Lesson 257 throughout the day.
1. Morning Quiet Time (5–15 minutes)
- Sit comfortably, close your eyes, and take a few gentle breaths.
- Say slowly, with sincerity:
*“Let me remember what my purpose is.”*
- Then add something like:
“Holy Spirit, I am willing to remember that my purpose is forgiveness and peace. Show me how to use this day for that purpose.”
- Sit in quiet. You don’t need to force thoughts away. Just let them come and go, and gently return to the idea:
“My purpose is to remember love.”
2. Setting the Intention for the Day
Before starting your usual activities, say inwardly:
- “Whatever happens today, I will try to remember my purpose.”
- “I will not use this day to reinforce guilt, fear, or attack.”
3. During the Day: Short Pauses
When you feel upset, stressed, or tempted to judge, pause briefly and say:
- “What is my purpose here?”
- “Do I want to be right, or do I want peace?”
- “Let me remember what my purpose is.”
Even a 10-second pause can shift your mind from ego to Spirit.
4. In Specific Situations
- Before a difficult conversation:
“Let me remember my purpose is peace, not victory.”
- When you feel sick or in pain:
“Let me remember my purpose is to remember I am spirit, not a body.”
- When you feel anxious:
“Let me remember my purpose is to trust, not to worry.”
5. Evening Reflection
Before sleep, gently review your day:
- Where did I remember my purpose?
- Where did I forget and follow the ego instead?
Without guilt, simply offer it all to the Holy Spirit:
- “I give You this day. Correct my perception. Help me remember my purpose more clearly tomorrow.”
Comparable ACIM Lessons
Several lessons echo the same theme:
- **Lesson 61: “I am the light of the world.”**
This defines your true purpose as bringing light (forgiveness, love) to the world.
- **Lesson 62: “Forgiveness is my function as the light of the world.”**
Clarifies that forgiveness is the form your purpose takes here.
- **Lesson 64: “Let me not forget my function.”**
Very close to Lesson 257—both ask you to remember your real function instead of the ego’s.
- **Lesson 71: “Only God’s plan for salvation will work.”**
Contrasts the ego’s purposes with God’s plan, which is always forgiveness and awakening.
- **Lesson 99: “Salvation is my only function here.”**
States directly that your only function (purpose) in this world is to accept salvation for yourself and extend it to others.
Lesson 257 gathers these threads and brings them into a simple, heartfelt prayer:
*Let me remember. Let me not be distracted by the ego’s many false purposes.*
Closing Thought
Today you are not asked to be perfect. You are only asked to be willing to remember why you are truly here: to let love replace fear, to let innocence replace guilt, and to let peace replace conflict in your mind.
Even one sincere moment of remembering your purpose is a gift to the whole Sonship.
Let this be such a day.
