Lesson 326 – “I am forever an Effect of God.”

(From the Review: “I am forever an Effect of God. I cannot be separate from Him.”)

The Core Teaching

This lesson reminds you of something the ego never wants you to remember:

You did not create yourself. You are the effect of God, and God is your Cause.

In the world, “effect” can sound weak, as if you are a victim of forces outside you. But in A Course in Miracles, being an “effect” of God means:

  • Your Source is pure Love.
  • What comes from Love can only be loving.
  • You share the nature of your Cause.

If God is your Cause, then you are not a small, guilty, temporary self trying to survive in a dangerous world. You are the extension of God’s Love—unchangeable, safe, and wholly innocent.

What the ego is trying to hide

The ego’s entire strategy depends on one idea:

“You are on your own. You made yourself. You are separate.”

From that false idea, all fear, guilt, and conflict arise. If you made yourself, then:

  • You can fail.
  • You can be unworthy.
  • You can be “not enough.”
  • You can be attacked, punished, or abandoned.

The ego wants you to believe you are a self-caused, separate being—cut off from your Source—because then you will feel vulnerable and guilty, and you will look to the ego for “protection.”

The ego is trying to hide:

1. *Your dependence on Love.*

It calls dependence “weakness,” but in truth, your dependence on God is your invulnerability. You cannot lose what God created.

2. *Your innocence.*

If you did not create yourself, you cannot have ruined yourself. Whatever you think you did “wrong” did not change what God created.

3. *Your unity with all life.*

If God is the Cause of everyone, then everyone shares the same holy Source. The ego wants separate causes and separate selves so it can justify judgment and attack.

What the Holy Spirit is revealing

The Holy Spirit gently undoes this illusion by reminding you:

  • You are *caused* by Love and remain as Love created you.
  • Nothing you have done, or failed to do, has changed your real Self.
  • You are joined with every brother and sister in one shared Identity.

To say, “I am forever an Effect of God” is to say:

  • I rest in the certainty that I did not make myself.
  • I am not responsible for inventing my worth; it is given.
  • I cannot be guilty for what God created innocent.
  • I cannot truly be sick, broken, or lost, because my Cause is perfect.

The Holy Spirit is revealing a simple, quiet truth:

You are safe because your Cause is unthreatened.

Applied to Daily Life

Let’s bring this down into the situations you face every day.

Relationships

When you feel hurt, rejected, or angry in a relationship, the ego whispers:

  • “They don’t value you.”
  • “You’re not lovable.”
  • “You must protect yourself or attack back.”

Underneath is the belief: “My value depends on what this person does or doesn’t do.”

That is the belief that you are self-made, vulnerable, and incomplete.

Practicing this lesson, you might say internally:

“I am forever an Effect of God.
My worth comes from my Source, not from this person’s behavior.
They, too, are an Effect of God, even if they’ve forgotten.”

From this remembrance, you can respond more gently. You may still set boundaries or say “no,” but you will do it from a place of shared innocence, not attack. You stop demanding that others prove your worth, because your Cause has already guaranteed it.

Work and money

At work you might feel pressure, competition, or fear of failure. The ego says:

  • “Your job is your security.”
  • “Your success proves your value.”
  • “If you lose this, you lose everything.”

This assumes that your livelihood and identity are self-created and fragile.

Into this, you can bring:

“I am forever an Effect of God.
My security is in my Source, not in this job or paycheck.
I can be guided in what to do, but my Being is already safe.”

This does not mean you ignore practical responsibilities. It means you let go of the terror that your life is hanging by a thread. You begin to see work as a classroom for trust, not a battlefield for survival.

Illness and pain

When the body is sick or in pain, the ego uses it to “prove”:

  • “You are weak and alone.”
  • “You are at the mercy of the body.”
  • “You are a body.”

The Course never asks you to deny symptoms. It asks you to question the identity you give them.

You might say:

“This body is not my Cause. God is my Cause.
I am forever an Effect of God—spirit, not flesh.
I ask to see this situation through the Holy Spirit’s eyes.”

You still may take medicine, see doctors, rest, and care for the body. But you hold, quietly, the deeper truth: My real Self is untouched. This softens fear and opens the mind to healing—whether that healing appears as physical improvement, deeper peace, or both.

Anxiety and daily stress

Stress usually comes from the belief:

  • “It’s all up to me.”
  • “If I don’t control everything, disaster will happen.”
  • “I am alone in this.”

This is the ego’s version of “I am my own cause.” It is exhausting.

In a moment of anxiety, pause and remember:

“I am forever an Effect of God.
I am not alone; I am carried by my Source.
I will let myself be guided step by step.”

You still make phone calls, pay bills, attend meetings—but you do so with a different Teacher in your mind. Instead of trying to be your own creator and savior, you allow yourself to be led by the One Who knows the plan already.

Overcoming Resistance

Why might this lesson feel difficult or uncomfortable?

1. *Fear of losing control.*

The ego equates “I am an Effect of God” with “I will be powerless.”

In truth, you are giving up only the illusion of control for the certainty of real strength.

2. *Fear of losing individuality.*

You may fear that if you are just an “effect,” you will vanish into some impersonal oneness.

The Course teaches that you keep your true individuality—your unique radiance—but you lose the lonely, separate self that suffers.

3. *Attachment to guilt.*

Part of the mind believes guilt is necessary for “morality” or “improvement.”

To accept that you are the innocent Effect of God can feel like you’re letting yourself “off the hook.”

Yet true correction comes from Love, not from self-condemnation.

4. *Doubt about worthiness.*

Some part of you may think, “This is too beautiful to be true for me.”

That is precisely why the lesson is given: to gently contradict that belief.

If you notice resistance, you do not need to fight it. Simply notice it and say:

“Holy Spirit, I am afraid of this idea.
Please show me that remembering my Source is safe.
I am willing to be gently convinced.”

Today’s Practice

Here is a simple way to practice this lesson throughout the day.

1. Morning quiet time (5–15 minutes)

  • Sit comfortably and close your eyes.
  • Take a few slow, gentle breaths.
  • Say slowly, with intention:

“I am forever an Effect of God.
I cannot be separate from Him.”

  • Let the words sink in. Don’t force belief. Just let them be like a soft rain on your mind.

  • Then, imagine your life as a stream flowing from a great, luminous Source. You are not separate from that Source; you are its extension. Rest in that image.

  • If thoughts come—about tasks, worries, or people—gently place them in the Light of your Source and say:

“This, too, is held in God.
I am not alone in this.”

2. Short practice periods during the day

Several times an hour, or whenever you feel tension, repeat silently:

  • “I am forever an Effect of God.”
  • “My Cause is Love, and I remain as Love created me.”

Use it especially:

  • Before a difficult conversation.
  • When you feel criticized or praised.
  • When you notice anxiety, guilt, or anger.
  • When you feel rushed or overwhelmed.

Let it be a gentle reset, not a demand.

3. When upset

If you are triggered, pause and say:

1. “I must have forgotten my Cause.”

2. “I am forever an Effect of God.”

3. “Holy Spirit, show me how to see this as You do.”

Then wait a moment in quiet. Even a few seconds of willingness opens a door.

4. Evening reflection

Before sleep, review your day lightly:

  • Where did I remember I am an Effect of God?
  • Where did I forget and feel alone or guilty?

Offer both the “successes” and the “failures” to the Holy Spirit:

“I give this day back to my Cause.
Correct my perception and use everything for healing.”

Comparable ACIM Lessons

This lesson is closely connected to several others:

  • **Lesson 158: “Today I learn to give as I receive.”**

Both emphasize that what you are and what you have come from God and are shared, not self-made.

  • **Lesson 132: “I loose the world from all I thought it was.”**

When you remember your true Cause, you also loosen your grip on the ego’s version of the world.

  • **Lesson 73: “I will there be light.”**

Here you choose the Will you share with God, rather than the ego’s separate will.

  • **Lesson 94: “I am as God created me.”**

This is the natural partner to Lesson 326. If you are as God created you, then you are indeed forever His Effect.

  • **Lesson 70: “My salvation comes from me.”**

Not from the ego-self, but from the Self that is the Effect of God. Salvation is the recognition of your true Source.

Closing Thought

You do not have to make yourself holy, worthy, or safe. That has already been done, forever, by your Creator.

Today, you are simply remembering:

“I am forever an Effect of God.
I rest in the Love that caused me,
and nothing can change what I truly am.”

Let that remembrance be enough for today. Even a little willingness to accept your true Cause opens the door to a peace that has never left you.
