Lesson 138: “Heaven is the decision I must make.”

The Core Teaching

This lesson is very simple on the surface and very radical underneath.

“Heaven is the decision I must make” means:

  • Heaven is not a place you go to later.
  • It is not a reward you earn.
  • It is a *present decision* about which teacher you will follow in your mind: the ego or the Holy Spirit.

What is the ego trying to hide?

The ego’s central lie is that you don’t have this choice.

It tells you:

  • You are at the mercy of the world.
  • Your peace depends on what other people do.
  • Your happiness depends on money, health, status, relationships, or circumstances.
  • You are a victim of your body, your past, your trauma, your mistakes.

Why does the ego insist on this? Because if you truly recognized that your inner peace is a decision in your mind, you would be free. And the ego’s existence depends on your belief that you are not free.

So the ego hides:

1. *Your power of decision.*

It wants you to believe you are powerless, so you keep seeking outside yourself.

2. *The fact that there are only two choices.*

The ego tries to convince you there are thousands of choices: which job, which partner, which city, which diet, which spiritual path.

The Course says: beneath all of that, there is only one choice:

  • Choose the ego (separation, fear, guilt), or
  • Choose the Holy Spirit (oneness, love, innocence).

3. *That you already want Heaven.*

The ego tells you that giving yourself fully to God will cost you something:

  • “You’ll lose your individuality.”
  • “You’ll be bored.”
  • “You’ll be weak, passive, or naive.”
  • “You’ll have to give up special relationships or pleasures.”

It hides the simple truth: what you really want is peace, love, safety, and joy—and that is Heaven.

What is the Holy Spirit revealing?

The Holy Spirit gently corrects the ego’s story by revealing:

1. *Heaven is a state of mind, available now.*

It is the remembrance of your innocence, your unity with all life, and your safety in God. It is not somewhere else, not later—only a shift in perception now.

2. *You are never a victim of the world you see.*

You are never upset for the reason you think. You are upset because you have chosen to see through the ego’s eyes. And you can choose again.

3. *Your decision is always reversible.*

If you choose fear, you can choose again. If you choose attack, you can choose again. There is no final condemnation. The door back to Heaven in your mind is never locked.

4. *You cannot truly lose anything real by choosing Heaven.*

You only lose illusions: fear, guilt, conflict. What is real—love—remains and grows brighter.

So, “Heaven is the decision I must make” means:

  • I must decide which voice I want to listen to.
  • I must decide what I want to value: grievances or peace, judgment or forgiveness, separation or unity.

This is not a one-time decision; it is a moment-to-moment willingness.

Applied to Daily Life

Let’s bring this into very ordinary situations.

Relationships

Imagine you’re in conflict with a partner, friend, or family member.

The ego says:

  • “They are the problem.”
  • “If they change, I’ll be at peace.”
  • “I must protect myself by defending, attacking, withdrawing, or punishing.”

Heaven, as a decision, looks like this:

  • “I choose peace instead of this.”
  • “I am willing to see this person as innocent, even if I don’t know how.”
  • “I ask the Holy Spirit to show me what is really happening here.”

You might still have a boundary. You might still say “no.” But you do it from a quiet mind, not from rage or fear. The form of the relationship might change, but your goal becomes peace, not winning.

Work

At work, you may feel stressed, underappreciated, or afraid of failure.

The ego says:

  • “Your worth depends on your performance.”
  • “You must compete to survive.”
  • “You are in danger if you fail.”

Choosing Heaven at work might sound like:

  • “My worth is given by God and cannot be changed.”
  • “I can bring peace into this situation instead of adding to the fear.”
  • “I choose to trust that I am guided, even in this job.”

This doesn’t mean you become passive. You may still strive, improve, or even leave a job. But you are no longer trying to earn your worth. You are expressing the worth you already have.

Illness

When the body is sick or in pain, the ego uses it as proof:

  • “You are vulnerable.”
  • “You are a body.”
  • “You are being punished or abandoned.”

The Holy Spirit’s reinterpretation is:

  • “You are not a body. You are free.”
  • “Your reality as spirit is untouched by this.”
  • “Even here, peace is available.”

Choosing Heaven in illness might look like:

  • Gently reminding yourself: “I am still as God created me.”
  • Asking: “How can I see this with love instead of fear?”
  • Being kind to yourself and others, even in pain.

Healing may or may not show up as physical cure. But the deeper healing is the release of fear and guilt.

Anxiety and Daily Stress

You feel anxious about money, the future, your children, the world.

The ego says:

  • “You are alone.”
  • “You must control everything.”
  • “Something terrible is coming.”

Heaven as a decision here is:

  • “I choose to trust instead of worry.”
  • “I do not know what anything is for, but the Holy Spirit does.”
  • “I am willing to let my mind be quiet for a moment and remember I am held.”

You still pay bills, plan, and act responsibly. But you do it from a place of inner safety, not panic. You let guidance lead, instead of fear.

Overcoming Resistance

Why might this lesson feel difficult or even threatening?

1. *Fear of losing control.*

The ego believes that if you truly hand your mind to God, you’ll lose your identity and control.

In truth, you lose only the illusion of control that never worked, and gain a deeper sense of being carried.

2. *Attachment to grievances.*

Part of us wants to keep certain hurts, to justify our anger or sense of separation.

Heaven requires that we at least question whether we want to keep suffering.

3. *Fear of being “too spiritual” and getting hurt.*

The ego whispers: “If you choose peace, you’ll be weak. People will walk all over you.”

But true peace is not weakness. It is clarity. It often leads to strong, loving boundaries, spoken without hatred.

4. *Doubt that it can be this simple.*

“How can such a big thing as Heaven come down to a decision?”

Because Heaven is not about changing the world; it is about changing your mind about the world.

You do not have to remove all resistance at once. You only need a little willingness:

  • “I am willing to want Heaven.”
  • “I am willing to be shown that this is safe.”
  • “I am willing to be wrong about what I think will make me happy.”

The Holy Spirit uses even your resistance gently. Nothing is forced. You are led step by step.

Today’s Practice

Here is a simple way to practice Lesson 138 today.

1. Quiet Time (10–15 minutes, or as you can)

Sit comfortably. Close your eyes if that feels right.

1. Begin by saying slowly, with sincerity:

  • “Heaven is the decision I must make.”
  • “I make it now.”

2. Let yourself feel any resistance, doubt, or fear. Do not fight it. Just notice:

  • “Part of me is afraid of this.”
  • “Part of me doesn’t trust this.”

Offer that to the Holy Spirit:

  • “Please use even my fear to bring me to peace. I do not know how, but You do.”

3. Then gently repeat in your mind, like a soft rhythm:

  • “Heaven is the decision I must make.”
  • “I choose peace instead of this.”
  • “I choose God’s Will as my own.”

If thoughts come, let them pass like clouds. Keep returning to the idea. You are not trying to force belief—only to open to it.

2. During the Day

Use this lesson as a response to every upset:

  • When you feel triggered, pause and say inwardly:
  • “Heaven is the decision I must make.”
  • “Right now, I am deciding for either fear or peace.”
  • “Holy Spirit, help me choose Heaven.”

  • If you feel angry:
  • “I could see peace instead of this. Heaven is the decision I must make.”

  • If you feel anxious:
  • “I am not a victim of the world I see. Heaven is the decision I must make.”

  • If you feel guilty:
  • “My innocence is guaranteed by God. Heaven is the decision I must make.”

You are not expected to be perfect. Each time you remember is a miracle. Each time you forget is just another chance to choose again.

3. Evening Reflection

Before sleep, briefly review your day:

  • Where did you remember to choose Heaven?
  • Where did you forget?

Do not judge yourself. Simply say:

  • “Where I chose fear, I can choose again.”
  • “Where I chose peace, I thank the Holy Spirit.”

End with:

  • “Heaven is the decision I must make. I rest in that decision now.”

Comparable ACIM Lessons

This lesson is closely related to several others:

  • **Lesson 34: “I could see peace instead of this.”**

Both lessons emphasize that peace is a choice in the mind, not a condition in the world.

  • **Lesson 70: “My salvation comes from me.”**

This echoes the same idea: your liberation is not outside you. Heaven is your own decision.

  • **Lesson 73: “I will there be light.”**

Choosing Heaven is choosing the light as your will, aligning your will with God’s.

  • **Lesson 185: “I want the peace of God.”**

This lesson asks if you truly want peace without exception. Lesson 138 says: if you do, then Heaven is the decision you must make.

  • **Lesson 188: “The peace of God is shining in me now.”**

Here, Heaven is not only a decision but a present fact about you, waiting to be recognized.

All of these lessons point to one truth: your mind is powerful, and your will is not separate from God’s. You are learning to remember that.

Closing Thought

You do not have to make this decision perfectly. You only have to make it sincerely, and make it again when you forget.

Heaven is not far away. It is the quiet place in you that has never left God. Today, you are simply saying:

“I am willing to go there. I am willing to remember. Heaven is the decision I must make—and I choose it now.”
