Lesson 295 – “The Holy Spirit looks through me today.”
The Core Teaching
The central idea of Lesson 295 is that there is another way of seeing available to you right now. Not a better ego perspective, not a more “positive” human outlook, but a different mind entirely: the Holy Spirit’s mind, which is actually your true mind.
The lesson says that today, the Holy Spirit looks through you. That means:
- You are not the one who truly judges.
- You are not the one who truly decides what anything means.
- You are not the one who truly sees separation, guilt, or fear.
- You are the *place* where the Holy Spirit’s vision can shine through into the world.
The metaphysical core is this:
1. *The ego’s perception is not neutral.*
It is a closed system designed to prove that separation is real. It interprets everything to support the story:
- “I am a body.”
- “I am separate from you.”
- “I am vulnerable, guilty, or lacking.”
- “Love is uncertain and can be lost.”
2. *The Holy Spirit’s perception is also not neutral—but it is sane.*
It is a correction in the mind, a gentle reinterpretation of everything you see. It always says:
- “You are not a body; you are spirit.”
- “You are joined with everyone in one mind.”
- “You are innocent and safe in God.”
- “Love cannot be threatened or truly lost.”
3. *You are choosing which teacher looks through your eyes.*
You think you are just “seeing the world as it is,” but you are actually seeing what you want to see, according to which teacher you have chosen in your mind. The ego wants to see separation; the Holy Spirit wants to see unity and innocence.
So, what is the ego trying to hide?
- That the world you see is a projection of your mind.
- That you are the dreamer of the dream, not the victim of it.
- That guilt is not real and never has been.
- That you are still as God created you—whole, loved, and safe.
If you remembered these things, the ego would lose its entire foundation. It survives by convincing you that you are weak, guilty, and at the mercy of forces outside you.
What is the Holy Spirit revealing?
- That every situation is either an expression of love or a call for love.
- That no one is truly your enemy; they are either remembering love or forgetting it.
- That your function is forgiveness—seeing past appearances to the truth.
- That your mind can be used as a channel for healing, peace, and blessing.
“The Holy Spirit looks through me today” means:
“I am willing to let my eyes, my words, my hands, my presence be used by Love instead of fear. I will not insist on my own interpretations.”
Applied to Daily Life
1. Relationships
Imagine you’re in a tense relationship—partner, family member, or friend. The ego looks and says:
- “They are unfair.”
- “They don’t understand me.”
- “They’re the problem.”
The Holy Spirit, looking through you, says:
- “Here is a brother or sister who is afraid, just as you are.”
- “Here is a chance to remember that we share the same need for love.”
- “Here is an opportunity to forgive my own mind by seeing their innocence.”
Practically, this might look like:
- Pausing before reacting.
- Silently saying, “Holy Spirit, look through me. Show me what is really happening here.”
- Feeling even a small softening in your heart toward them.
- Being willing to see that your anger is really a cover for hurt and fear—and that theirs is too.
You may still speak firmly, set boundaries, or say “no.” But the spirit behind your words changes. You are no longer attacking; you are witnessing to a deeper truth.
2. Work and Career
At work, the ego sees:
- Competition, threat, scarcity.
- “I must protect my position.”
- “My value depends on performance and recognition.”
The Holy Spirit sees:
- A classroom of minds learning to remember their shared worth.
- Opportunities to extend kindness, patience, and honesty.
- A place where your inner peace can be practiced, not sacrificed.
For example:
- When a coworker takes credit for your work, the ego screams, “Attack back!”
The Holy Spirit might guide you to calmly clarify the facts, but without hatred, and to remember that no one can steal your true value.
- When you feel overwhelmed, you can pause and say:
“Holy Spirit, look through me at this workload. Show me what is truly important. Help me release the fear and work in peace.”
3. Illness and the Body
The ego uses illness to “prove”:
- “I am a body.”
- “I am weak, vulnerable, and at the mercy of the world.”
- “God must be distant or cruel.”
The Holy Spirit does not deny the experience of the body, but He gently reinterprets it:
- “Your reality is not this body.”
- “You remain spirit, untouched by pain.”
- “This can become a place where you learn trust, gentleness, and acceptance.”
Practically:
- You still take medicine, see doctors, rest, and care for the body.
- But you add: “Holy Spirit, look through me at this illness. Let me not use it to prove that I am separate from God. Show me how to see this with you.”
- You might notice more compassion for others who suffer, and a deeper reliance on inner peace rather than outer conditions.
4. Anxiety and Daily Stress
The ego uses anxiety to keep you focused on:
- Future catastrophes.
- Past mistakes.
- Constant self-judgment.
The Holy Spirit looks at the same situations and says:
- “You are not alone.”
- “You are not guilty.”
- “You are safe in this moment, in Me.”
In practice:
- When anxiety rises, you pause and say:
“Holy Spirit, I feel afraid. Please look through me. Show me what is real here, and what is just a fearful story.”
- You might notice that most of your fear is about imagined futures or replayed pasts.
- You bring your mind back to the present and let the Holy Spirit reinterpret what you see: a room, a body breathing, a situation that is happening *now*, not the entire story of your life.
Overcoming Resistance
This lesson can feel threatening because it implies:
- “I am not the best judge of what I see.”
- “My interpretations might be wrong.”
- “I am asked to surrender control of my perception.”
The ego equates this surrender with annihilation. It whispers:
- “If you let the Holy Spirit look through you, you’ll be weak.”
- “You’ll be taken advantage of.”
- “You’ll lose your identity, your boundaries, your specialness.”
Underneath is a deeper fear:
“If I let Love look through me, I will have to give up my grievances—and I’m not sure who I am without them.”
The Course is gentle about this. You are not asked to force yourself, but to be willing:
- Willing to admit you might not see clearly.
- Willing to experiment with another way.
- Willing to let a little light in, even if you still feel afraid.
You are not losing yourself; you are remembering yourself. The self that fears, attacks, and defends is not your real Self. Letting the Holy Spirit look through you is like opening a window in a dark room. The furniture doesn’t disappear; it just becomes visible. You see what’s really there.
Today’s Practice
Here is a simple way to practice Lesson 295 throughout the day.
1. Morning Quiet Time (5–15 minutes)
1. Sit comfortably and close your eyes.
2. Take a few gentle breaths, relaxing the body.
3. Say slowly, with sincerity:
“The Holy Spirit looks through me today.
Let me not see with the ego’s eyes.
Let me see with Your vision instead.”
4. Imagine your mind as a clear window.
- Any fear, judgment, or grievance is like dust on the glass.
- The Holy Spirit is the light shining through.
5. Silently repeat for a few minutes:
“Holy Spirit, look through me. Show me what is real.”
Let any images, people, or situations arise. Offer each one to the Holy Spirit:
“Look at this with me. Show me another way to see it.”
2. During the Day – Short Pauses
Whenever you feel:
- Irritated
- Anxious
- Judging
- Defended
Pause for a few seconds and say inwardly:
- “Holy Spirit, look through me at this.”
- Or: “How would You have me see this person?”
- Or: “I am willing to see this differently.”
You don’t need to feel peaceful immediately. Just keep offering your perception to Him.
3. With Specific People
If someone triggers you today, try this:
1. Mentally step back and say:
“Holy Spirit, look through me at this brother/sister.”
2. Ask:
“What is this person really asking for? Love? Understanding? Safety?”
3. Be willing to see them not as an enemy, but as a frightened mind, like yours, calling for love.
4. Evening Reflection
Before sleep, spend a few minutes reviewing the day:
- Where did you remember to ask the Holy Spirit to look through you?
- Where did you forget and follow the ego’s interpretation?
Without guilt, simply say:
“Holy Spirit, I give You this whole day. Correct my perception. Use my sleep for healing, that I may see with You more easily tomorrow.”
Comparable ACIM Lessons
This lesson connects strongly with:
- **Lesson 121: “Forgiveness is the key to happiness.”**
Forgiveness is the act of letting the Holy Spirit reinterpret what you see.
- **Lesson 151: “All things are echoes of the Voice for God.”**
The Holy Spirit’s vision sees everything as a reflection or echo of God’s Love, or a call for It.
- **Lesson 158: “Today I learn to give as I receive.”**
You receive the Holy Spirit’s vision and then give it by letting Him look through you.
- **Lesson 186: “Salvation of the world depends on me.”**
Not the ego’s “me,” but the mind that allows the Holy Spirit to see for it.
- **Lesson 262: “Let me perceive no differences today.”**
The Holy Spirit’s vision does not see separate, competing interests.
All these lessons train the mind to shift from the ego’s perception of separation to the Holy Spirit’s perception of unity and innocence.
Closing Thought
Today you are not asked to be perfect. You are simply invited to be willing—willing to let Love borrow your eyes, your words, your presence. Let the Holy Spirit look through you, even for a moment, and you will begin to recognize the quiet, steady truth:
You are not alone. You are not guilty. You are the place where God’s Love can shine into the world.
