LESSON 28

Above all else I want to see things differently.

The world I see holds my fearful self-image in place, and guarantees its continuance. While I see the world as I see it now, truth cannot enter my awareness. I would let the door behind this world be opened for me, that I may look past it to the world that reflects the Love of God.

Lesson 28: “Above all else I want to see things differently.”

This lesson is a turning point. It is a quiet but powerful declaration that you are willing to let your perception be changed at the deepest level. You are not just asking to see different things; you are asking to see everything differently. You are inviting a new interpreter of your life—shifting from the ego’s way of seeing to the Holy Spirit’s.

Let’s explore what that really means.

I. The Core Teaching

1. What does “seeing differently” mean?

In A Course in Miracles, “seeing” is not about the eyes. It is about interpretation. Two people can look at the same situation and “see” completely different things: one sees betrayal, the other sees a call for love; one sees loss, the other sees an opportunity to forgive and be free.

To “see things differently” means:

  • To question the meanings you have given everything.
  • To admit that you may have been wrong about what things *are* and what they *mean*.
  • To allow a new meaning—based on love, not fear—to dawn in your mind.

Lesson 28 builds on Lesson 27: “Above all else I want to see.” Now you’re becoming more specific: you want to see differently. You are not asking for sharper eyesight or better circumstances. You are asking for a different purpose for everything you see.

2. What is the ego trying to hide?

The ego is the belief that you are separate—from God, from others, and even from your own true Self. To keep this belief going, it must hide the truth that:

  • You are not a body.
  • You are not vulnerable.
  • You are not guilty.
  • You are not alone.

The ego uses the world as a screen on which it projects its fear and guilt. It tells you:

  • “This person is your enemy.”
  • “This situation proves you are not safe.”
  • “This illness proves you are weak.”
  • “This loss proves you are abandoned.”

The ego is trying to hide the simple fact that nothing in this world has the power to define you or separate you from Love. It wants you to believe that what your eyes see is reality, and that your interpretations are unquestionable.

If you start to see differently, the ego’s whole thought system begins to fall apart. That is why it resists this lesson.

3. What is the Holy Spirit revealing?

The Holy Spirit is the Voice for God in your mind—the memory of truth that has never left you. The Holy Spirit uses everything you see for a single purpose: to lead you back to peace.

Where the ego sees attack, the Holy Spirit reveals a call for love.

Where the ego sees guilt, the Holy Spirit reveals innocence.

Where the ego sees loss, the Holy Spirit reveals a shift in form, not in love.

In Lesson 28, the Holy Spirit is gently saying:

“You have been wrong about what things mean. Let Me show you another way to see.
Every situation, every person, every object can serve the purpose of healing, if you will let it.”

You are not asked to change the world, but to change your mind about the world. The Holy Spirit reveals that everything can become a classroom of forgiveness, a doorway to remembering who you really are.

II. Applied to Daily Life

Let’s bring this into very ordinary, human experiences.

1. Relationships

Suppose you feel hurt by a friend or partner. The ego says:

  • “They don’t care about you.”
  • “You are not valued.”
  • “You must defend yourself or withdraw.”

To see differently, you might say:

  • “Above all else I want to see this relationship differently.”
  • “I may be wrong about what this means.”
  • “Holy Spirit, show me what this is for.”

You may begin to see:

  • Their behavior as a reflection of their own fear, not your unworthiness.
  • An opportunity to communicate honestly instead of attack or shut down.
  • A chance to forgive yourself for past judgments and release old stories.

The outer situation might not change immediately, but your experience of it can soften. You feel less like a victim and more like a learner in a loving classroom.

2. Work and career

At work, you might see stress, competition, or boredom. The ego says:

  • “This job is my identity.”
  • “My worth depends on my performance.”
  • “These people are obstacles or threats.”

To see differently:

  • “Above all else I want to see my work differently.”
  • “This job can be a place to extend kindness and learn peace.”
  • “My worth is given by God, not by my boss or my paycheck.”

Then:

  • The difficult coworker becomes a chance to practice patience and non-judgment.
  • The demanding project becomes a place to ask for inner guidance and trust.
  • The fear of failure becomes an invitation to remember that your true Self cannot fail.

3. Illness and the body

When the body is in pain or illness arises, the ego says:

  • “You are your body.”
  • “You are weak and at the mercy of the world.”
  • “This proves you are not safe.”

To see differently does not mean denying symptoms or refusing help. It means:

  • “Above all else I want to see this illness differently.”
  • “My body is not my Self. My Self remains as God created me.”
  • “This experience can be used to deepen trust, compassion, and gentleness with myself.”

You might:

  • Treat the body with care, while remembering it is not your identity.
  • Let illness slow you down enough to listen more deeply within.
  • Use fear as a signal to turn to the Holy Spirit, not as proof that you are doomed.

4. Anxiety and daily stress

When anxiety arises, the ego says:

  • “Something is wrong with you.”
  • “You are not safe.”
  • “You must control everything.”

To see differently:

  • “Above all else I want to see my anxiety differently.”
  • “This is a signal that I am believing in separation again.”
  • “I can use this moment to remember I am held in a Love that does not change.”

Then:

  • Instead of attacking yourself for feeling anxious, you offer yourself kindness.
  • You pause, breathe, and ask: “Holy Spirit, how would You have me see this?”
  • You begin to see that anxiety is not an enemy, but a call to return to trust.

III. Overcoming Resistance

1. Why this lesson can feel threatening

This lesson asks you to value changed perception above all else. The ego hears this as:

  • “Above all else I am willing to question everything I believe.”

That can feel like:

  • Losing control.
  • Losing identity.
  • Losing the familiar, even if the familiar is painful.

You may notice thoughts like:

  • “I don’t really want to see differently; I just want things to get better.”
  • “If I see differently, maybe I’ll have to forgive, and I’m not ready.”
  • “If I’m wrong about this, what else might I be wrong about?”

All of this is normal. The Course never asks you to force willingness. It asks for a little willingness. Just enough to say:

“I am willing to be shown another way, even if I don’t yet understand it.”

2. Gently addressing doubt and fear

You are not being asked to give up anything real. You are being asked to release illusions:

  • The illusion that you are guilty.
  • The illusion that you are alone.
  • The illusion that you are at the mercy of the world.

If fear arises, you can say:

  • “Holy Spirit, I am afraid of seeing differently. Please be with me in this fear.”
  • “I do not have to do this alone. The change in perception is not my doing; it is Yours. I only offer my willingness.”

You are not being pushed. You are being invited.

IV. Today’s Practice (Lesson 28)

The specific practice for Lesson 28 is simple but deep.

1. *Choose a few objects around you.*

For example: a chair, a phone, a plant, a picture, a cup.

2. *Look at each one slowly and say:*

  • “Above all else I want to see this chair differently.”
  • “Above all else I want to see this phone differently.”
  • “Above all else I want to see this picture differently.”

The exact wording is:

“Above all else I want to see this ______ differently.”

3. *Let the words sink in.*

You are not trying to force a new meaning. You are simply declaring your willingness to have the meaning changed for you.

4. *Do several short practice periods.*

  • A few minutes, several times during the day.
  • No strain. No pressure.

Just a gentle, sincere offering of willingness.

5. *Include people and situations in your mind.*

You can also apply the idea silently to:

  • “Above all else I want to see this relationship differently.”
  • “Above all else I want to see this meeting differently.”
  • “Above all else I want to see this fear differently.”

6. *End each practice with a quiet moment.*

After repeating the idea with a few objects or situations, pause and rest.

You might silently add:

  • “Holy Spirit, I give You my perception. Show me what this is for.”

V. Comparable ACIM Lessons

This lesson is closely connected to several others:

  • **Lesson 20: “I am determined to see.”**

Lesson 20 introduces your determination to see. Lesson 28 refines that determination: you want to see differently, not just more.

  • **Lesson 21: “I am determined to see things differently.”**

Lesson 21 is like an earlier echo of today’s idea. Lesson 28 adds the phrase “above all else,” emphasizing priority. Now you are saying: this is not just a wish; it is my highest goal.

  • **Lesson 27: “Above all else I want to see.”**

Lesson 27 sets the foundation: you want vision more than anything. Lesson 28 specifies that vision is not just seeing more clearly, but seeing with a different purpose.

  • **Lesson 29: “God is in everything I see.”**

Lesson 29 follows naturally: once you are willing to see differently, you are ready to be told what you will see—God’s presence everywhere.

All these lessons are training your mind to shift from the ego’s interpretation to the Holy Spirit’s.

VI. Closing Thought

Each time you say, “Above all else I want to see things differently,” you are opening a small window in a darkened room. You do not have to create the light; you only have to let it in.

Let today be gentle. You are not being judged on how well you “do” the lesson. You are simply invited, again and again, to whisper:

“I am willing to see this differently.
I do not know what anything is for, but I am willing to learn.”

That willingness is enough. The rest is done for you.
