Lesson 266 – “My holy Self abides in you, God’s Son.”
(From the Review V section: “My holy Self abides in you, God’s Son.”)
The Core Teaching
This lesson is about identity. It is gently asking:
*Who am I really—and who are you really?*
The Course calls our true identity the holy Self: the one Self we share with every living being, created by God, untouched by guilt, fear, or death. Lesson 266 reminds us that this holy Self is not only in “me,” but in you—in every brother and sister we meet.
The ego’s entire strategy is to keep this fact hidden. It wants us to believe:
- I am a separate person, in a separate body, with a separate mind.
- You are different from me, and our interests can conflict.
- My safety lies in protecting “me” against “you.”
Underneath all its stories, the ego is trying to hide one thing:
*If we share the same Self, then separation is impossible and the ego is nothing.*
So the ego must keep us busy with grievances, judgments, comparisons, and special relationships. It whispers: “They hurt you. They don’t understand you. They’re better than you. You’re better than them. You must defend yourself. You must prove yourself.”
Every judgment we cling to is like a veil over the truth:
*My holy Self abides in you, God’s Son.*
The Holy Spirit reveals the opposite of the ego’s story. He gently shows us:
- There is only one Self, one Life, one Love.
- What is true in God cannot be divided.
- Every person you meet is a mirror of your own holy Self.
When you look at someone and think, “Here is a stranger, an enemy, a rival, a burden,” the Holy Spirit quietly corrects you:
“No, here is your Self, disguised by fear. Here is Christ, asking to be recognized.”
Metaphysically, this lesson is saying:
*There is only the Christ-Self, and it abides in all.*
The world of separate bodies and separate minds is a dream. Inside this dream, the fastest way to wake up is to recognize the holy Self in your brother.
You do not really “become” holy. You are holy, and so is everyone else. The practice is simply to remember this, and to let every encounter become an opportunity to say inwardly:
“Your holiness is my own.
My holy Self abides in you, God’s Son.”
Applied to Daily Life
1. Relationships
Imagine you’re in conflict with a partner, friend, or family member. They said something hurtful. You feel misunderstood or betrayed.
The ego says:
- “They’re wrong. They need to change. I need to protect myself.”
The lesson invites a different inner response:
- “Behind this behavior, my holy Self abides in you.
You are not your words. You are not your defenses.
You are the Christ, as I am.”
This doesn’t mean you deny your feelings or stay in harmful situations. It means that, even as you set boundaries or speak honestly, you hold a deeper awareness:
“The truth of you is innocent and loving, as is the truth of me.
We are not these roles. We are not these stories.”
You might pause in the middle of an argument and silently say:
“My holy Self abides in you, God’s Son.”
You may feel a softening, a little space around the anger. Even if nothing changes outwardly, something has shifted in your mind. You are choosing to see beyond the mask.
2. Work and Career
At work, it’s easy to see people as functions: the boss, the difficult coworker, the competitor, the client. The ego sees a battlefield of separate interests.
This lesson invites you to remember:
“Every person here is the Christ in disguise.”
- The demanding boss: behind their fear and control is the same holy Self.
- The coworker who irritates you: behind their habits is the same holy Self.
- The person who gets the promotion you wanted: behind your jealousy is the same holy Self you both share.
You might sit at your desk, look around (or imagine your colleagues), and say quietly:
“My holy Self abides in you, God’s Son.
We are not in competition. We are one.”
This can bring a surprising sense of peace. You may find it easier to respond with kindness, patience, or clarity, because you are no longer relating from fear, but from shared identity.
3. Illness and the Body
When you or someone you love is ill, the ego shouts:
- “You are a body. You are vulnerable. You are at the mercy of the world.”
This lesson does not ask you to deny symptoms or refuse help. It asks you to remember that *your true Self is not the body.* The body can be sick or well, strong or weak, but the holy Self remains untouched.
You might say:
- “My holy Self abides in me, God’s Son, and in this one I love.
We are not these bodies. We are Spirit, held in God.”
If you are caring for someone who is ill, you can silently affirm:
“Beyond this pain, my holy Self abides in you.
I will not confuse your eternal Self with this temporary condition.”
This doesn’t magically erase symptoms, but it lifts fear and despair. It restores a sense of sacredness to the situation. You remember that nothing real can be threatened.
4. Anxiety and Daily Stress
When anxiety arises—about money, the future, relationships—the ego says:
- “You are alone. You must figure this out. You might fail.”
Lesson 266 answers:
- “You are not alone. You share one holy Self with all creation.
You are held in a Love that cannot fail.”
In a moment of stress, you can pause, breathe, and say:
“My holy Self abides in you, God’s Son—
in everyone involved in this situation,
and in me.
We are joined in one mind, in one Love.”
This opens the door for guidance, inspiration, and unexpected help, because you are no longer seeing yourself as an isolated, struggling self, but as part of a unified whole.
Overcoming Resistance
This lesson can feel challenging for several reasons:
1. *“But some people are truly awful.”*
The ego points to cruelty, injustice, and abuse and says, “How can they be holy?”
The Course is not saying their behavior is holy. It is saying their true Identity—beneath the fear and insanity—is the same Christ-Self as yours. If you deny their holiness, you deny your own, because there is only one Self.
2. *Fear of losing individuality.*
You may feel: “If we’re all one Self, do I disappear?”
The ego equates oneness with loss. The Holy Spirit reveals that oneness is fulfillment, not erasure. You do not lose anything real; you lose only the loneliness and fear of being separate.
3. *Attachment to grievances.*
Part of us wants to keep certain people guilty. It feels like protection.
This lesson gently asks: “Has holding them guilty ever brought you peace?”
To see the holy Self in another is not to say, “What you did was fine.” It is to say, “What you did was not your true Self. I choose to remember the truth of you—and of me.”
4. *It feels too abstract.*
The idea of a “holy Self” can seem vague. That’s why the practice is relational: we remember our holy Self in each other. Every encounter becomes a classroom for remembering.
If you feel resistance, you can say honestly:
“Holy Spirit, I don’t fully believe this yet.
I’m afraid to see my brother as holy.
Please help me. Show me just a little glimpse of the truth.”
Your willingness, even if small, is enough.
Today’s Practice
Here is a simple way to practice Lesson 266 throughout the day.
1. Morning Quiet Time (5–15 minutes)
- Sit comfortably, close your eyes, and breathe gently.
- Say slowly, with intention:
“My holy Self abides in you, God’s Son.
My holy Self abides in everyone I meet today.
We are one in God.”
- Bring to mind a few people you expect to see today—family, coworkers, strangers. For each one, say inwardly:
“[Name], my holy Self abides in you, God’s Son.”
- If resistance arises, simply notice it and add:
“I am willing to see you as you truly are.”
2. During the Day – Encounters
With each person you meet—whether in person, online, or in thought—use them as a reminder:
- Silently say:
“My holy Self abides in you, God’s Son.”
- If it’s someone you dislike or fear, you might add:
“You are not what I have made of you in my mind.
You are the Christ, as I am.”
You don’t need to change your outer behavior dramatically. The shift is internal.
3. When Upset or Triggered
When you feel anger, judgment, or anxiety about someone:
1. Pause. Take a slow breath.
2. Acknowledge your feeling: “I feel angry… scared… hurt.”
3. Then say:
“I am willing to see the holy Self in you.
My holy Self abides in you, God’s Son.
Help me, Holy Spirit, to see truly.”
Even if you don’t feel it yet, the words open a door in your mind.
4. Evening Reflection
Before sleep, review your day gently:
- Recall a few interactions. Where did you remember the holy Self? Where did you forget?
- Without guilt, simply say:
“Where I forgot, I forgive myself.
My holy Self abides in you, God’s Son, and in me.
We rest together in God tonight.”
Let the day be wrapped in forgiveness and shared identity.
Comparable ACIM Lessons
Several lessons are closely related:
- **Lesson 94: “I am as God created me.”**
Establishes your own true identity as the holy Self.
- **Lesson 95: “I am one Self, united with my Creator.”**
Emphasizes the oneness of that Self, which Lesson 266 extends to everyone you see.
- **Lesson 121: “Forgiveness is the key to happiness.”**
Forgiveness is how we uncover the holy Self in our brother and ourselves.
- **Lesson 124: “Let me remember I am one with God.”**
The inner foundation for recognizing that same oneness in others.
- **Lesson 158: “Today I learn to give as I receive.”**
As you receive awareness of your holy Self, you give it by seeing it in others.
- **Lesson 161: “Give me your blessing, holy Son of God.”**
Very close to 266: it asks you to look upon each brother and see the Christ in them, asking for their blessing.
- **Lesson 191: “I am the holy Son of God Himself.”**
Affirms your identity; Lesson 266 extends that identity to everyone: “My holy Self abides in you, God’s Son.”
These lessons together form a tapestry: you are the holy Son of God, one Self with all, and your brother is the way you remember this.
Closing Thought
Today, let every face you see—friend or stranger, pleasant or difficult—become a doorway back to God. Behind every pair of eyes is the same holy Self that lives in you.
You do not have to force belief. You only need a little willingness to say:
“My holy Self abides in you, God’s Son.
As I remember you, I remember myself.”
Let that be enough for today.
