Lesson 253 – My Self is ruler of the universe.

This lesson sounds enormous, almost grandiose, to the ego: “Ruler of the universe? That can’t be right.” But the Course is not talking about the little self you usually think you are. It is speaking of the one Self you share with all creation—the Self God created, the Self that remains forever as God created It.

This lesson is about where power really lies, and what truly rules your experience.

The Core Teaching

The metaphysical meaning

In ACIM, “the universe” that you seem to live in—this world of bodies, time, conflict, and death—is a projection of the mind. It is not created by God; it is made by the sleeping mind that believes it separated from God and then tried to hide from Him in a world of form.

When the lesson says, “My Self is ruler of the universe,” it is saying:

  • There is only one Mind.
  • That Mind is the source of what you experience.
  • The “ruler” is not a tyrant, but the quiet, changeless Self that shares God’s Will of perfect Love.

The “universe” you experience is a mirror of the decision in your mind: to listen to the ego or to the Holy Spirit. The ego wants you to believe that you are a tiny, vulnerable body in a huge, indifferent universe. The Holy Spirit reminds you that you are the holy Self, and that nothing is outside your mind’s decision for love or fear.

So, “My Self is ruler of the universe” means:

  • My true Identity, as God created me, is the cause of what I perceive.
  • When I choose with the Holy Spirit, I “rule” by allowing Love to reinterpret everything.
  • I am not a victim of the world I see (echoing Lesson 31), because the power of decision is in my mind.

What is the ego trying to hide?

The ego’s survival depends on one central lie: “You are powerless and separate.” To keep this lie intact, the ego tries to hide:

1. *Your authorship power.*

The ego does not want you to see that your mind is the cause of your experience. If you saw that, you would realize you can choose again, and the ego would lose its grip.

2. *Your unity with all beings.*

If you are one Self with everyone, then blame, attack, and specialness make no sense. The ego feeds on comparison and separation; oneness is its undoing.

3. *Your innocence.*

The ego wants you to feel guilty and afraid of God. If you knew you were still as God created you—innocent, loved, safe—you would drop the ego’s fearful stories.

4. *The unreality of the world of conflict.*

The ego insists the world is solid, external, and causative: “The world is doing this to you.” It hides that the world is a projection of the mind’s belief in separation.

What is the Holy Spirit revealing?

The Holy Spirit gently reveals the opposite:

1. *You are the holy Self, not the ego.*

The Self is not a body, not a personality, not a history. It is pure, loving awareness. This Self is “ruler” because it shares God’s Will and cannot be overruled.

2. *Your mind is cause, not effect.*

The Holy Spirit shows you that your thoughts, interpretations, and beliefs shape your experience. Change your teacher in your mind, and the “universe” you experience changes in meaning.

3. *You are safe in God.*

The Holy Spirit reveals that nothing real can be threatened. What you truly are cannot be harmed by time, sickness, loss, or death. The Self is untouched.

4. *Forgiveness restores your awareness of power.*

When you forgive, you withdraw the mind’s investment in the ego’s story. You stop insisting that the world is the cause of your pain. This returns the “scepter” to your true Self: the power to choose peace.

Applied to Daily Life

Let’s look at how this lesson can touch ordinary situations.

Relationships

You feel hurt by a partner, friend, or family member. The ego says:

  • “They did this to me.”
  • “I’m powerless until they change.”
  • “My peace depends on their behavior.”

This lesson invites a different view:

  • “My Self is ruler of the universe. My peace does not depend on their words or actions. It depends on what I choose to believe about myself and them.”

You might say inwardly:

  • “I am not at the mercy of this person’s behavior. I can choose to see innocence instead of guilt. I can ask the Holy Spirit to show me what this is for.”

You are not denying the feelings, but you are relocating the power: from them, back to the mind. As you do, you may feel less like a victim and more willing to forgive.

Work and career

Perhaps you feel trapped in a job, anxious about money, or resentful of a boss or co-worker. The ego says:

  • “The economy rules my life.”
  • “My boss rules my happiness.”
  • “I am stuck.”

This lesson whispers:

  • “The world is not your ruler. Your Self is. The power of decision is in your mind.”

You might pause and say:

  • “My Self is ruler of the universe. I choose to see this workplace through the Holy Spirit’s eyes. Show me where I am giving away my power to circumstances.”

You may still look for a new job or set boundaries, but now from a place of inner authority, not fear. You remember that peace is available now, not only when conditions change.

Illness and the body

Sickness can feel like the ultimate proof of powerlessness. The ego says:

  • “Your body is your identity, and it is weak and vulnerable.”
  • “You are at the mercy of biology and fate.”

The Holy Spirit does not ask you to deny symptoms or avoid practical care. But He gently reminds you:

  • “You are not a body. You are free. Your Self is ruler of the universe.”

This means:

  • Your *worth* and *reality* are not determined by the body’s condition.
  • You can choose to bring your fear, anger, and grief about illness to the Holy Spirit and let them be reinterpreted.

You might say:

  • “This body may feel weak, but my Self is not weak. I ask to see this situation through the eyes of Christ. Let me remember I am still as God created me.”

Sometimes this shift brings physical healing; sometimes it brings deep inner peace even if the body does not change. In both cases, you reclaim your true power.

Anxiety and daily stress

Traffic, deadlines, family demands, news headlines—these can all feel overwhelming. The ego’s message is:

  • “You are a small self being pushed around by forces bigger than you.”

This lesson offers a quiet correction:

  • “Nothing is bigger than the Self God created. The universe you experience is a reflection of the teacher you choose in your mind.”

In a stressful moment, you might pause and breathe:

  • “My Self is ruler of the universe. I am not ruled by time, by others’ expectations, or by fear. Holy Spirit, think through me now. Act through me now.”

You may still do what needs to be done, but now with a sense of inner spaciousness and choice.

Overcoming Resistance

Why this lesson might feel difficult

1. *Fear of arrogance.*

You may think, “Who am I to say I’m ruler of the universe?” The ego equates true power with arrogance. But the Course means the opposite: you are not a separate ruler; you are the Self that shares God’s Will. That is humility, not pride.

2. *Attachment to victimhood.*

Part of the mind is invested in being the victim. Victimhood gives the ego an identity: “Look what the world has done to me.” To accept this lesson is to admit that your peace is your own choice. That can feel like a loss at first, because it removes the ego’s favorite weapon: blame.

3. *Fear of responsibility.*

If your mind is the cause, then you are responsible for your experience. The ego hears this as “You are to blame.” The Holy Spirit means something very different: “You are powerful. You can choose again. You are not stuck.”

4. *Fear of losing specialness.*

If there is one Self ruling the universe, then no one is more special or more guilty than anyone else. The ego resists this, because it lives on comparisons.

Gently addressing the fear of letting go

You do not have to force yourself to believe this lesson. You only need a little willingness to question the ego’s story.

You can say:

  • “I don’t fully understand this, and I’m afraid of it. But I am willing to be shown. Holy Spirit, help me see this lesson as You see it.”

You are not being asked to take on a heavy burden. You are being invited to lay down the burden of believing you are powerless. The Holy Spirit will do the heavy lifting if you let Him.

Today’s Practice

Here is a simple way to practice Lesson 253 today.

1. Morning quiet time (5–15 minutes)

  • Sit comfortably and close your eyes.
  • Take a few gentle breaths.
  • Say slowly, with as much sincerity as you can:
  • “My Self is ruler of the universe.

It is not this small self I made,

but the holy Self I share with all creation.”

  • Let the words sink in. You don’t have to understand them fully. Just let them be true for a moment.
  • Then say:
  • “Holy Spirit, help me remember today that I am not a victim of the world I see.

Show me that my Self, united with God, holds all power to choose peace.”

  • Sit in silence for a few minutes. If thoughts arise, gently bring them under this idea:
  • “My Self is ruler of the universe. I choose to see with Love.”

2. During the day: short reminders

Whenever you feel upset, stressed, or tempted to blame:

1. Pause. Take one slow breath.

2. Silently say:

  • “I am not at the mercy of this situation.

My Self is ruler of the universe.

I can choose peace instead of this.”

3. Ask:

  • “Holy Spirit, how would You have me see this?”

Even a few seconds of this can shift the energy of the moment.

3. In conflict or emotional pain

If you feel hurt, angry, or afraid:

  • Acknowledge the feeling: “I feel scared (or angry, sad).”
  • Then add:
  • “But this feeling does not define my Self.

My Self is ruler of the universe, and it remains at peace in God.”

Invite the Holy Spirit to reinterpret the situation. You might not see the answer immediately, but you have turned the situation over to the true “Ruler.”

4. Evening reflection

Before sleep, spend a few minutes reviewing the day:

  • Where did you feel like a victim?
  • Where did you remember your inner power?

Gently bring any painful memories to the Holy Spirit and say:

  • “I thought I was powerless here.

I must have chosen the ego.

I now choose again.

My Self is ruler of the universe.”

Rest in the feeling that nothing real was harmed today, and that your true Self remains untouched.

Comparable ACIM Lessons

This lesson is closely linked to several others:

  • **Lesson 31: “I am not the victim of the world I see.”**

Both lessons challenge the belief that the world is doing something to you. Lesson 253 goes further, affirming that your true Self is the ruler—the cause, not the effect.

  • **Lesson 32: “I have invented the world I see.”**

If you invented the world, then your Self must be the mind that made the choice. Lesson 253 points to the same authorship, but from the perspective of your holy Self.

  • **Lesson 132: “The world I see holds nothing that I want.”**

As you realize your Self is ruler of the universe, the world’s offerings lose their power over you. You no longer seek salvation in externals.

  • **Lesson 191: “I am the holy Son of God Himself.”**

This is the identity that “rules” the universe—not by domination, but by sharing God’s Will.

  • **Lesson 152: “The power of decision is my own.”**

This is the practical expression of being “ruler.” Your experience comes from the decision in your mind.

Closing Thought

You are not being asked to become powerful; you are being asked to remember that you already are, in God. The small self feels fragile, but the Self that God created in you is unshakable, gentle, and wholly loving.

Let this lesson be a soft whisper today, not a demand:

“My Self is ruler of the universe.

I am not a victim of anything.

I can choose peace, because peace is what I am.”

Let that be enough for today.
