Lesson 125: “In quiet I receive God’s Word today.”
I. The Core Teaching
This lesson is about discovering that God is already speaking to you, all the time. Not with words, not with sentences, but with a steady, loving Presence that is always communicating peace.
The Course says your mind is never not thinking. It is always choosing between two “voices”:
- the ego’s voice: loud, anxious, judgmental, busy, and never satisfied
- the Holy Spirit’s Voice: quiet, gentle, certain, and always loving
Lesson 125 tells you that God’s Word—God’s communication—is quiet. Not because it is weak, but because it is so sure of itself that it does not need to shout. It is like a steady, unmoving light behind the clouds of your thoughts.
What is the ego trying to hide?
The ego’s main fear is that if you truly became quiet, you would discover:
1. You are not separate from God.
2. You are not guilty.
3. You are not alone.
4. You are not a body, and therefore not truly vulnerable.
The ego survives on noise: mental noise, emotional drama, inner commentary, and constant evaluation. It keeps you busy with:
- replaying the past
- rehearsing the future
- judging yourself and others
- comparing, planning, worrying
Why? Because if your mind ever truly rested, you would feel a peace that does not come from this world. And that peace would show you that the ego is not your identity at all—it’s just a mistaken thought system.
So the ego hides the quiet. It tells you:
- “Silence is boring.”
- “If you stop thinking, you’ll lose control.”
- “You need to keep worrying to stay safe.”
- “You don’t have time to be quiet—there’s too much to do.”
Underneath all of that is a deeper fear:
“If I become quiet, I might discover that I am loved beyond anything I can imagine—and then this little ‘me’ I’ve been protecting will dissolve.”
What is the Holy Spirit revealing?
The Holy Spirit uses this lesson to reveal something very simple and very radical:
- God is not far away.
- God is not waiting to speak.
- God is speaking *now*, and has never stopped.
“In quiet I receive God’s Word today” means:
- In quiet, I *remember* what is always true.
- In quiet, I *allow* the peace that is already here to be felt.
- In quiet, I *hear* the answer that has already been given.
The Holy Spirit is not trying to fix your life from the outside. He is gently reminding you that your real life is in God, and from that awareness, everything you seem to face here is reinterpreted in the light of love.
God’s Word is not a specific sentence like, “Take this job” or “Call this person.” It is more like a continuous message:
“You are My beloved child. You are safe in Me. You are innocent. You are loved. You are not alone.”
When you accept this message, even for a moment, your perception of everything begins to soften. You start to see that nothing here has the power to define you or truly harm you.
II. Applied to Daily Life
Let’s bring this into the ordinary places where you live: relationships, work, illness, anxiety, and daily stress.
1. Relationships
Suppose you’re in conflict with a partner, friend, or family member. The ego’s voice says:
- “They’re wrong.”
- “I need to defend myself.”
- “I’m not being respected.”
- “I must fix them or protect myself from them.”
The mind gets noisy: rehearsing arguments, replaying past hurts, imagining future confrontations.
“In quiet I receive God’s Word today” invites you to pause. Even for a minute. You don’t try to solve the relationship. You simply become willing to be still:
- You breathe.
- You let the thoughts swirl without following them.
- You say inwardly, “I am willing to hear another Voice.”
In that quiet, you may not get a specific “instruction,” but you might feel:
- a softening in your chest
- a little more spaciousness
- a sense that you don’t *have* to attack or defend
From that quiet, you might naturally say something more honest, more gentle, or you might simply not react. The Holy Spirit’s Word shows up as a shift from fear to love, from defense to trust.
2. Work
At work, the ego’s voice is often about:
- pressure
- performance
- comparison
- fear of failure or not being enough
The ego says, “You don’t have time to be quiet. You must keep pushing.”
Practicing this lesson at work might look like:
- Taking 30 seconds at your desk, closing your eyes, and saying:
“In quiet I receive God’s Word today. I choose to listen.”
- Letting your shoulders drop.
- Allowing a sense that you are not alone in this task.
You may notice that when you return to your work, you are a little clearer, less frantic, and more guided. The Holy Spirit’s Word often appears as:
- a calm sense of priority
- a gentle nudge: “Do this now, that can wait”
- a reminder: “Your worth is not measured by this outcome.”
3. Illness
Illness can trigger deep fear. The ego says:
- “I am this body.”
- “I am vulnerable and at the mercy of the world.”
- “If the body is weak, I am weak.”
The Course does not ask you to deny symptoms or refuse help. It invites you to bring your mind to quiet, even in the midst of pain or treatment.
In that quiet, you might say:
- “I am willing to remember that I am not just this body.”
- “In quiet I receive God’s Word today: I am still as God created me.”
You may still feel pain, but something deeper begins to shine through: a sense of being held, of not being abandoned, of a Self that is untouched by illness. That is God’s Word: the memory of your eternal wholeness.
4. Anxiety and Daily Stress
Anxiety is the ego’s favorite tool. It keeps the mind racing:
- “What if this happens?”
- “What if I can’t handle it?”
- “What if I fail?”
To practice this lesson in anxiety, you don’t have to force the anxiety to stop. Instead, you gently create a small space around it:
- “Yes, I feel anxious. And still, in quiet, I can receive God’s Word.”
- You sit or stand where you are, and for a moment you stop trying to solve everything.
- You let the anxious thoughts pass by like clouds, not grabbing any one of them.
You might feel only a small shift, but that small shift is everything. It is the recognition:
“I am not my anxiety. There is a quiet place in me that is untouched by this storm.”
That quiet place is where God’s Word is heard.
III. Overcoming Resistance
This lesson can feel difficult for several reasons:
1. *Fear of losing control*
The ego believes that if you stop thinking and planning, everything will fall apart. It says, “Your thinking is what keeps you safe.” But notice: has constant thinking actually brought you peace?
2. *Fear of the unknown*
Quiet can feel like a void at first. The ego says, “If I let go, what will be left of me?” The Course gently answers: “Only what is true will remain—your real Self, which is love.”
3. *Belief that you are unworthy*
Many feel, often unconsciously, “Why would God speak to me?” The ego uses guilt and shame to convince you that you are not worthy of direct communication with God. This lesson contradicts that entirely. It assumes you are worthy, because you are God’s creation.
4. *Impatience*
You may sit in quiet and think, “Nothing is happening.” But something is happening: you are training your mind to value peace over noise. The Holy Spirit is gently undoing your fear, even if you don’t feel fireworks.
If doubts arise, you can say:
- “It’s okay that I’m afraid. I don’t have to force anything.”
- “I am only asked to be willing, not perfect.”
- “Even my resistance is held in love.”
The Holy Spirit is not judging your practice. He uses every moment—stillness, distraction, resistance—as material for healing.
IV. Today’s Practice (Step-by-Step)
Here is a simple way to practice Lesson 125 today.
A. Longer Practice Periods (if possible, morning and evening)
1. *Find a quiet place.*
Sit comfortably. Close your eyes if you like.
2. *Set your intention.*
Silently say:
“In quiet I receive God’s Word today. I am willing to listen.”
3. *Relax the body.*
Let your shoulders soften. Take a few gentle breaths. You don’t need to breathe in any special way—just notice.
4. *Let thoughts pass.*
Thoughts will come. Don’t fight them. Don’t follow them. Just notice: “There is a thought,” and let it drift by, like a leaf on water.
5. *Return to the idea.*
When you notice you’ve been carried away, gently come back:
“In quiet I receive God’s Word today.”
You might also add:
“I do not know what God’s Word is, but I am willing to receive it.”
6. *Allow the quiet.*
You are not trying to “hear” a voice. You are allowing a feeling of safety, of being held, to arise. Even if you feel nothing, trust that the willingness itself is powerful.
7. *Close with gratitude.*
After 10–15 minutes (or whatever time you can give), say:
“Thank you. I accept that You have spoken to me, even if I do not yet recognize it.”
B. Short Practice Periods Throughout the Day
Several times today, pause for 30 seconds to 1 minute:
- Stop what you’re doing (if possible).
- Say quietly or silently:
“In quiet I receive God’s Word today.”
- Let there be a brief stillness, even in the middle of activity.
Use this especially when:
- You feel stressed
- You’re about to respond to someone in anger
- You feel lonely, guilty, or afraid
These small pauses are like opening little windows in a stuffy room. The light and fresh air of the Holy Spirit can enter more easily.
V. Comparable ACIM Lessons
Several lessons are closely related to Lesson 125:
- **Lesson 49: “God’s Voice speaks to me all through the day.”**
This emphasizes that God’s communication is constant. Lesson 125 adds the condition: we receive it in quiet.
- **Lesson 45: “God is the Mind with which I think.”**
This reminds you that your real mind is already joined with God. Quiet is how you begin to experience that union.
- **Lesson 41: “God goes with me wherever I go.”**
Here you learn that you are never alone. Lesson 125 is a way to feel that companionship in stillness.
- **Lesson 109: “I rest in God.”**
Very similar in spirit. Both invite you to lay down your burdens and discover a rest that has nothing to do with circumstances.
- **Lesson 221: “Peace to my mind. Let all my thoughts be still.”**
This later lesson echoes the same theme: stillness is the doorway to remembering the truth.
VI. Closing Thought
You do not have to make God speak to you today. You only have to make a little space to notice that He already is.
Let today be gentle. Let the quiet be simple. Even a few sincere moments of stillness are enough for the Holy Spirit to deepen His work in you.
You are not trying to reach God alone. God has already reached you—and in quiet, you begin to remember.
