*ACIM Lesson 231*

“Father, I will but to remember You.”

The Core Teaching

This lesson is about the deepest desire of your true Self: to remember God. It says that beneath every wish, every goal, every fear, and every conflict, there is only one real desire: to remember your Source, to remember Love.

The sentence “I will but to remember You” has a very specific meaning in A Course in Miracles:

  • **“I will”** – This is not about forcing or straining. It is about aligning your will with God’s Will. In the Course, God’s Will and your true will are the same. The only “will” that can ever truly satisfy you is the will to remember Love.
  • **“but”** – This means “only.” I want *only* this. It is a statement of simplicity. The ego’s world is complicated and full of conflicting goals. The Holy Spirit offers one goal that includes all others.
  • **“to remember You”** – This is not about remembering a distant deity. It is remembering what you are in truth: an extension of Love, innocent, safe, and forever held in God.

What is the ego trying to hide?

The ego’s entire strategy is to keep you from discovering that:

1. You are not separate from God.

2. You are not guilty.

3. You are not a body, and your life is not defined by time and death.

4. You are already loved, already whole, and already home in God.

If you remembered this fully, the ego would simply dissolve. It has no reality apart from your belief in separation, lack, and guilt.

So the ego tries to:

  • Distract you with endless goals: success, approval, control, special relationships, spiritual “achievement.”
  • Convince you that your will is *different* from God’s Will, and that God’s Will would cost you something you value.
  • Make you afraid of God, as if God is a judge who will punish you for what you think you’ve done.

The ego whispers:

“If you really remember God, you’ll lose your individuality, your specialness, your pleasures, your control. You’ll be swallowed up.”

It hides the fact that what you call “individuality” is actually a tiny, anxious, fragile identity, constantly defending itself.

What is the Holy Spirit revealing?

The Holy Spirit gently reveals:

  • **Your will and God’s Will are the same.** You *want* peace, love, safety, joy. That is exactly what God Wills for you. There is no conflict except in the ego’s imagination.
  • **You have never truly separated from God.** You are dreaming of exile, but you are still at home in Heaven. The memory of God is already in your mind.
  • **Remembering God is remembering your Self.** You do not disappear; you awaken. You do not lose; you recognize that nothing real can be lost.

When you say, “Father, I will but to remember You,” you are really saying:

“I am tired of pretending to be small, guilty, and alone. I choose to remember the Love that created me. I choose to remember what I am.”

This lesson is a declaration of willingness. You are not asked to force remembrance, only to want it more than you want the distractions of the ego.

Applied to Daily Life

Let’s bring this into very ordinary experiences.

1. Relationships

Imagine you are upset with someone: a partner, friend, or family member. The ego says:

  • “I want them to change.”
  • “I want to be right.”
  • “I want them to admit they hurt me.”

Underneath all of that, your deeper Self wants only one thing: to remember Love. To remember God in this person and in yourself.

In a conflict, you might pause and say quietly:

“Father, I will but to remember You.
Let me remember You instead of this grievance.”

You are not denying your feelings; you are inviting a different way of seeing. You are saying, “I want to remember that Love is here, even if I don’t see it yet.” This opens the door for forgiveness, for softening, for seeing your brother as more than their behavior.

2. Work and Career

At work, you may feel driven, stressed, or fearful of not being enough. The ego says:

  • “I want success.”
  • “I want security.”
  • “I want recognition.”

Underneath, your true will is to remember that your worth is not determined by performance, money, or status. You can silently bring this lesson into your day:

“Father, I will but to remember You.
Let me remember that my value is given by You, not by this job.”

Then your work becomes a classroom for peace rather than a battlefield. You still do your tasks, but now you are more interested in being kind, honest, and present than in defending an image.

3. Illness and the Body

When the body is in pain or illness, the ego focuses entirely on the body:

  • “This body is me.”
  • “If the body is weak, I am weak.”
  • “If the body dies, I end.”

The Holy Spirit uses this as an opportunity to remember:

“I am not a body. I am still as God created me.”
“Father, I will but to remember You, even here, even now.”

You still take care of the body—see doctors, rest, take medicine—but you hold a deeper awareness: My reality is Spirit. My identity is not at the mercy of this condition. This can bring a quiet, gentle peace even in the midst of physical difficulty.

4. Anxiety and Daily Stress

When you feel anxious—about money, the future, relationships—the ego says:

  • “You are on your own.”
  • “You must figure this out.”
  • “Something terrible might happen.”

This lesson invites a different response:

“Father, I will but to remember You.
I choose to remember I am not alone.
I choose to remember that Love goes with me wherever I go.”

You may not feel instant calm, but you are turning your mind toward its true Center. You are saying, “I want to remember the Presence that is with me in this moment.” That willingness allows the Holy Spirit to gradually undo the fear.

Overcoming Resistance

Why might this lesson feel difficult or threatening?

1. *Fear of losing control.*

The ego believes that if you align your will with God’s, you will lose control and be forced into something you don’t want. In truth, you are releasing a fearful, tiny will and accepting a will of perfect Love that has always been yours.

2. *Fear of losing individuality.*

You may feel, “If I remember God, I’ll disappear.” But what disappears is only the mask, the false self made of fear and defense. What remains is your true, radiant Self—far more alive and unique than the ego’s version.

3. *Belief that God is punishing or demanding.*

If you secretly think God is angry, then remembering God sounds dangerous. The Course gently corrects this: God is only Love. Anything else you have believed about God is part of the ego’s projection of guilt.

4. *Attachment to specialness.*

The ego loves being special—especially in its suffering. It may say, “I want peace, but I also want to be right, to be the victim, to be the one who was wronged.” This lesson asks you to value peace more than specialness.

If you notice resistance, you can simply say:

“Holy Spirit, I am afraid to remember God.
Please help me. I am willing to be willing.”

You do not have to force yourself past your fear. You only need a little willingness. The Holy Spirit does the rest.

Today’s Practice

Here is a simple way to practice Lesson 231 throughout the day.

1. Morning Quiet Time (5–15 minutes)

  • Sit comfortably, close your eyes if you like.
  • Take a few slow breaths, relaxing your shoulders, jaw, and belly.
  • Gently say, several times, very slowly:

“Father, I will but to remember You.”

  • Let the words sink in. You are not trying to *think* your way into God. You are simply expressing your heart’s desire.
  • You might add:

“Let my will be one with Yours.
I choose to remember Love today.”

  • Sit in silence for a few moments. If thoughts come, let them pass like clouds. Keep returning gently to the idea: *I want to remember You.*

2. During the Day (Frequent Short Pauses)

Use this lesson as a gentle refrain throughout the day:

  • When you feel stressed, silently say:
“Father, I will but to remember You.”
  • When tempted to judge someone:
“Let me remember You instead of this judgment.”
  • When afraid or anxious:
“I choose to remember I am not alone.”
  • When something goes well:
“Thank You. Let me remember You as my Source.”

These are not magic words; they are reminders of your true desire. Each time you say them, you loosen the ego’s grip a little more.

3. Evening Reflection

Before sleep, take a minute:

  • Recall a few moments of the day.
  • Where did you forget God and get lost in fear or judgment?
  • Without guilt, simply say:

“Even there, Father, I will but to remember You.
Help me see that nothing can separate me from Your Love.”

Then rest, knowing that the Holy Spirit continues the healing in your sleeping mind.

Comparable ACIM Lessons

This lesson is closely connected to several others:

  • **Lesson 79–80:** *“Let me recognize the problem so it can be solved”* and *“Let me recognize my problems have been solved.”*

Both point to the one problem (separation) and the one solution (remembering God).

  • **Lesson 127:** *“There is no love but God’s.”*

To remember God is to remember that only Love is real.

  • **Lesson 189:** *“I feel the Love of God within me now.”*

Very similar in spirit—turning inward to the Presence of Love already in you.

  • **Lesson 199:** *“I am not a body. I am free.”*

Remembering God is remembering that you are Spirit, not confined to a body.

  • **Lesson 193:** *“All things are lessons God would have me learn.”*

Every situation can be used to help you remember God, if you are willing.

All of these lessons point to the same core truth: there is only one real goal—awakening to the Love that is your true nature.

Closing Thought

Let this lesson be a gentle whisper in your heart today:

“Father, I will but to remember You.”

You do not have to know how to remember. You only need to want it, even a little. That small willingness is enough for the Holy Spirit to begin lifting the veil.

You are not trying to reach a distant God. You are allowing yourself to remember the Love that has never left you.
