Lesson 106: “Let me be still and listen to the truth.”
The Core Teaching
This lesson invites you into a very simple, very radical shift:
You are asked to pause the constant inner noise of the ego and become willing to listen to a different Voice—the Voice for God, which the Course calls the Holy Spirit.
What the ego is trying to hide
The ego’s basic “survival strategy” is distraction. It keeps you busy, tense, analyzing, judging, planning, worrying, comparing, and defending. Why? Because if you ever became truly still, you would discover something that would end the ego’s rule over your mind:
- That you are already safe.
- That you are already loved.
- That you are already whole.
- That nothing real has ever been threatened.
The ego lives on the belief that you are separate—from God, from others, and even from your own Self. It whispers:
- “You’re not enough yet.”
- “You’re in danger.”
- “You must fix yourself.”
- “You must protect yourself.”
- “You must control everything.”
If you believed you were already complete and held in perfect Love, the ego’s entire thought system would collapse. There would be nothing to fear, nothing to defend, nothing to attack. So the ego hides this truth under a constant stream of mental noise.
That is why stillness feels threatening to the ego. In silence, its voice loses power. In quiet, its stories are exposed as untrue.
What the Holy Spirit is revealing
The Holy Spirit is the quiet, gentle Voice in your mind that speaks for God. It never shouts. It never frightens. It never condemns. It simply waits for your willingness to listen.
When you say, “Let me be still and listen to the truth,” you are inviting this Voice to be heard. And what does it reveal?
- That you are innocent, not guilty.
- That you are loved, not condemned.
- That you are spirit, not a vulnerable body.
- That you are joined with every brother and sister, not alone and separate.
The Holy Spirit reinterprets everything the ego uses for fear and turns it into a means for awakening:
- Where the ego sees attack, the Holy Spirit shows a call for love.
- Where the ego sees loss, the Holy Spirit shows an opportunity to remember what cannot be lost.
- Where the ego sees sickness, the Holy Spirit shows a mistaken belief ready to be healed.
This lesson is about becoming quiet enough to hear that reinterpretation. Not to figure it out by yourself, but to listen and receive.
Applied to Daily Life
Relationships
Imagine a partner, friend, or family member says something sharp or dismissive. The ego reacts:
- “How dare they.”
- “I must defend myself.”
- “They don’t respect me.”
The mind fills with arguments, rehearsed speeches, and emotional replay. This is the ego’s noise.
To practice this lesson, you pause. You breathe. You say inwardly:
“Let me be still and listen to the truth.”
In that stillness, you might hear:
- “This person is afraid, just as you are.”
- “No one can take away your worth.”
- “You can choose to respond with gentleness instead of attack.”
You are not denying what happened; you are allowing a different interpretation. You may still speak up, set boundaries, or walk away—but your actions come from clarity, not from egoic defense.
Work and career
At work, the ego says:
- “Your value depends on performance.”
- “You must compete.”
- “You are always one mistake away from failure.”
This creates constant tension and anxiety.
Practicing this lesson, you might pause before a meeting and say:
“Let me be still and listen to the truth.”
In that quiet, you may sense:
- “Your worth is not on trial here.”
- “You are here to extend peace, not to win.”
- “You are supported in ways you cannot see.”
You still do your tasks, show up responsibly, and use your skills—but now with less fear and more inner spaciousness. Work becomes a classroom for remembering the truth, not a battlefield where you fight for identity.
Illness and the body
When the body is sick or in pain, the ego says:
- “You are your body.”
- “You are weak and vulnerable.”
- “This proves you are not cared for.”
The ego uses sickness to reinforce guilt and fear.
To practice this lesson, you might lie in bed, place a hand gently on your heart, and say:
“Let me be still and listen to the truth.”
In that stillness, you may hear:
- “You are not this body.”
- “You are held in Love, even now.”
- “Nothing can change what you are in truth.”
This does not mean you ignore medical help or deny symptoms. You take whatever loving, sensible steps are needed. But you no not let the body’s condition define your identity. You allow the Holy Spirit to use this situation to deepen your trust and loosen your identification with the body.
Anxiety and daily stress
The ego loves to plan, worry, and rehearse future disasters. It says:
- “If you don’t think about it constantly, something bad will happen.”
- “You must control everything.”
This lesson invites you to experiment with another way. When anxiety rises, you pause and say:
“Let me be still and listen to the truth.”
In the quiet, you might sense:
- “You are not alone.”
- “You are carried.”
- “You do not need to solve everything right now.”
You may receive a simple next step: make a call, rest, ask for help, or do nothing for a moment. The Holy Spirit’s guidance is often very gentle and practical, but it comes from peace, not panic.
Overcoming Resistance
This lesson can feel difficult for several reasons:
1. *Fear of silence*
Many people are afraid of quiet because they expect to find darkness there—old pain, guilt, or unhealed memories. The ego whispers, “Don’t be still. You won’t like what you find.”
The Course is teaching the opposite: in true stillness, you find the Light that heals all darkness. The pain you fear is already in the mind; quiet does not create it, it only reveals it to be healed.
2. *Addiction to thinking*
The ego has convinced you that constant thinking is necessary for safety. Letting go, even for a few moments, can feel like losing control. But notice: has all this thinking actually brought you peace?
3. *Doubt about hearing the Holy Spirit*
You may think, “What if I can’t hear anything?” or “What if I’m just making it up?”
The Course reassures you that your willingness is enough. You do not have to strain to hear. You simply create a space of quiet and trust that what you need will be given, in the right way and time. Sometimes it comes as a feeling of calm, sometimes as a gentle thought, sometimes as a shift in perception that you only recognize later.
4. *Fear of change*
If you truly listened to the truth, you might be guided to release grievances, to forgive, to stop certain habits, or to accept more love. The ego fears this because it means the end of its control. So it resists the lesson with boredom, distraction, or skepticism.
Be gentle with yourself. Resistance is not a sin; it is simply fear. You can say to the Holy Spirit:
“I am afraid to be still, but I am willing to learn. Please help me.”
That willingness is all that is ever asked.
Today’s Practice: Step-by-Step
Here is a simple way to practice Lesson 106 throughout the day.
1. Morning quiet time (10–15 minutes if possible)
- Sit comfortably, eyes closed.
- Take a few slow breaths. Let the body relax.
- Silently say:
“Let me be still and listen to the truth.”
- Imagine you are setting down all your thoughts, like heavy bags at your feet. You are not throwing them away; you are just not carrying them for a few minutes.
- Now simply rest in quiet.
- If thoughts come, don’t fight them.
- Gently say again: “Let me be still and listen to the truth,” and let the thoughts pass like clouds.
- If a peaceful thought, feeling, or inner reassurance arises, receive it gently. If nothing seems to come, simply trust that the Holy Spirit is working in your mind beyond your awareness.
2. Short pauses during the day
Several times an hour if you can, or at least a few times in the morning and afternoon:
- Pause for 10–30 seconds.
- Take one conscious breath.
- Silently repeat:
“Let me be still and listen to the truth.”
- Allow even a tiny gap in the stream of your usual thoughts. That small gap is enough for the Holy Spirit to bless your mind.
Use this especially when you feel triggered, stressed, or confused.
3. When facing a specific problem
- Bring the situation to mind.
- Acknowledge your feelings honestly.
- Say:
“I do not know what anything, including this, means.
Let me be still and listen to the truth.”
- Sit quietly for a moment. You do not need an instant answer. You are simply handing the problem over and inviting a higher interpretation.
4. Evening reflection
Before sleep, take a few minutes:
- Recall moments when you remembered to be still.
- Notice any difference in how you felt or responded.
- Thank the Holy Spirit for every small willingness you showed today.
- End with:
“Let me be still and listen to the truth.
I rest in You.”
Comparable ACIM Lessons
This lesson is closely connected with several others:
- **Lesson 10: “My thoughts do not mean anything.”**
Prepares you to question the ego’s constant chatter so you can become willing to listen to something else.
- **Lesson 41: “God goes with me wherever I go.”**
Reminds you that the Source of truth is always in your mind, making stillness safe, not empty.
- **Lesson 49: “God’s Voice speaks to me all through the day.”**
States directly that there is a Voice for truth in you and that it is always available.
- **Lesson 125: “In quiet I receive God’s Word today.”**
Deepens the same theme: quiet is not a void; it is the place where you receive.
- **Lesson 135: “If I defend myself I am attacked.”**
Shows how the ego’s defenses keep you from the stillness in which you would discover you need no defense.
All of these lessons work together to loosen your trust in the ego’s voice and strengthen your trust in the Holy Spirit’s gentle guidance.
Closing Thought
Today you are not asked to fix yourself, solve your life, or become spiritually perfect. You are only asked to be a little more willing to be still, and to listen.
Even if you feel you failed, even if your mind wandered a thousand times, your tiny willingness opens a door that the Holy Spirit can use. The truth in you is patient, kind, and certain. It waits quietly for your invitation.
“Let me be still and listen to the truth.”
Let this be your soft prayer today, and trust that every sincere repetition is answered.
