LESSON 22

What I see is a form of vengeance.

The world I see is hardly the representation of loving thoughts. It is a picture of attack on everything by everything. It is anything but a reflection of the Love of God and the Love of His Son. It is my own attack thoughts that give rise to this picture. My loving thoughts will save me from this perception of the world, and give me the peace God intended me to have.

*ACIM Lesson 22: “What I see is a form of vengeance.”*

This lesson can feel sharp at first. The word vengeance sounds harsh, almost accusatory. But the Course is never blaming you; it is gently uncovering what the ego is doing in your mind so that you can be freed from it. Lesson 22 is about seeing how the ego’s world is built on fear, attack, and defense—and how this distorted perception hides the quiet, constant Love of God that is actually here.

I. The Core Teaching

1. What does “a form of vengeance” mean?

When the Course says, “What I see is a form of vengeance,” it is not saying that the trees, people, or objects in your life are literally attacking you. It is pointing to the interpretation your ego-mind places on everything you see.

The ego believes:

  • You are separate from others and from God.
  • You are vulnerable, incomplete, and guilty.
  • The world is a place where you must protect yourself or be hurt.

From this belief system, perception becomes a mirror of fear. The world you see then seems to confirm:

  • Others can hurt you.
  • Circumstances can betray you.
  • Your body can fail you.
  • Love can be withdrawn, lost, or destroyed.

This is what the Course calls a world of “vengeance”: a world that seems to strike back, punish, or threaten you. It is not that God created a punishing world; it is that the ego projects its own hidden guilt and fear outward and then perceives that projection as if it were coming at you from outside.

So, “What I see is a form of vengeance” really means:

The world I see reflects my belief in attack, guilt, and punishment.

2. What is the ego trying to hide?

The ego is trying to hide one central truth:

*You are innocent, safe, and loved in God, and have never truly left Him.*

If you remembered this, the ego would dissolve. So it tries to keep your attention fixed on:

  • Problems “out there”
  • Conflicts with others
  • Threats to your body or status
  • Stories of unfairness, betrayal, and loss

By keeping you focused on a world of attack and defense, the ego hides the fact that the real “problem” is not out there at all—it is the belief in separation in your own mind. And that belief can be undone.

The ego’s strategy:

  • Project inner guilt onto the world.
  • Perceive the world as unjust, dangerous, or disappointing.
  • Use this perception as “proof” that you are a victim and that separation is real.

In this way, the ego hides the simple truth: the world you see is coming from your mind, not being forced upon it.

3. What is the Holy Spirit revealing?

The Holy Spirit, the Voice for God in your mind, uses this lesson to reveal:

  • **Cause is in your mind, not in the world.**
  • What you see is not an objective, fixed reality; it is a projection of your beliefs.
  • Because it is a projection, it can be changed.

The Holy Spirit is not asking you to feel guilty about what you see. He is inviting you to feel empowered: if your mind made this fearful perception, your mind can also accept a different Teacher and see a different world.

The Holy Spirit reveals:

  • Beneath every image of attack is a call for love.
  • Beneath every fear is the memory of God.
  • Beneath every “form of vengeance” is a mistaken perception that can be gently corrected.

This lesson is not about condemning the world; it is about loosening your belief that the world has power over your peace.

II. Applied to Daily Life

Let’s bring this into ordinary situations.

1. Relationships

Suppose a friend doesn’t return your call. The ego quickly says:

  • “They don’t care about me.”
  • “People always abandon me.”
  • “I must have done something wrong.”

Now the friend’s silence becomes a “form of vengeance” in your perception. It feels like they are punishing you. But the Course would say:

  • You are seeing your own fear of abandonment and unworthiness projected onto them.
  • The “vengeance” is not in them; it is in the story the ego is telling you.

Practicing the lesson, you might think:

“What I see (this neglect, this rejection) is a form of vengeance.
It is not the truth. It is my mind’s interpretation, based on fear.”

This opens a space for another way of seeing:

  • Maybe they are busy, overwhelmed, or struggling.
  • Maybe nothing is wrong at all.
  • Maybe, even if they *are* upset, it does not define your worth or your safety in God.

The Holy Spirit gently shifts you from “I am being attacked” to “I am being invited to heal my fear.”

2. Work and career

You might feel that your boss is unfair, coworkers are competitive, or you are constantly judged. The ego says:

  • “This job is attacking my peace.”
  • “These people are out to get me.”

Lesson 22 invites you to notice:

“What I see (this unfairness, this pressure) is a form of vengeance—my belief that the world can punish me.”

You are not asked to deny what seems to be happening, but to question the meaning you give it. From the Holy Spirit’s perspective:

  • Every situation at work is a classroom for forgiveness.
  • Every perceived attack is an opportunity to remember your invulnerability in Spirit.
  • Your true safety does not depend on anyone’s opinion of you.

This does not mean you never set boundaries or change jobs. It means you stop believing that your peace is at the mercy of external conditions.

3. Illness and the body

When the body is sick or in pain, it can feel like the body is betraying you. The ego uses this to say:

  • “Life is cruel.”
  • “I am being punished.”

Lesson 22 suggests that even here, what you see is a form of vengeance: a reflection of the belief that you are a body, vulnerable and separate from God.

The Holy Spirit does not blame you for sickness. Instead, He uses it to remind you:

  • You are not the body.
  • Your true Self cannot be harmed.
  • The body’s condition does not change your holiness.

You can still seek appropriate care, but you begin to loosen the idea that pain is proof of divine abandonment. Instead, you can say:

“This pain is not God’s will.
I am willing to see this differently.”

4. Anxiety and daily stress

Traffic, bills, deadlines, family demands—these can feel like constant pressure. The ego’s message is:

  • “Life is attacking me from all sides.”

Lesson 22 invites you to pause and recognize:

“What I see (this stress, these demands) is a form of vengeance—my belief that I am at the mercy of a hostile world.”

This recognition opens the door for the Holy Spirit to reinterpret:

  • You are not a victim of time; you are misidentifying with a fearful mind.
  • You can bring your stress to the Holy Spirit and say, “Show me another way to see this.”
  • Even in the busiest day, peace is available in your mind right now.

III. Overcoming Resistance

1. Why might this lesson be difficult?

Several reasons:

  • **The word “vengeance” feels extreme.**

You might think, “I don’t see vengeance; I just see a normal world.” The Course is not talking about surface appearances; it is talking about the underlying belief that the world can hurt you.

  • **It challenges victimhood.**

The ego is deeply attached to the identity of “the one who has been wronged.” This lesson gently questions that identity by saying: the world you see is your own projection.

  • **Fear of responsibility.**

You might hear, “I made this world of suffering,” and feel guilty. But the Course means responsibility without guilt:

  • If your mind made this perception, your mind can accept healing.
  • You are not being blamed; you are being empowered.

2. Gently addressing doubts and fear of letting go

You might think:

  • “If I let go of seeing attack, I’ll be naive and people will walk all over me.”
  • “If I don’t see the world as dangerous, I won’t protect myself.”

The Holy Spirit reassures:

  • True forgiveness does not make you weak; it makes you clear.
  • You can still say “no” to harmful behavior, but without hatred, fear, or self-condemnation.
  • Letting go of vengeance in your mind does not mean you deny what seems to happen; it means you stop using it to prove that you are separate and unsafe.

You are not asked to force belief. You are only asked to be willing to question the ego’s version of reality.

IV. Today’s Practice (Lesson 22)

Here is a simple way to practice this lesson today, in line with the Workbook’s intent:

1. Short practice periods

  • Do **4 or 5 practice periods** today, about **1 minute** each.
  • Sit quietly, close your eyes if you like, and slowly repeat the idea:
“What I see is a form of vengeance.”

  • Then open your eyes and look around slowly, letting your gaze rest lightly on whatever you see:
  • Objects, people, the room, the street, your own body.

For each thing you look at, say quietly:

  • “I see only a form of vengeance in this.”

For example:

  • “I see only a form of vengeance in this chair.”
  • “I see only a form of vengeance in this hand.”
  • “I see only a form of vengeance in that car.”
  • “I see only a form of vengeance in this face.”

You are not asked to analyze or explain why. Just apply the idea as instructed.

2. Let the words work on you

You may feel resistance, confusion, or even irritation. That is okay. Simply notice:

  • “I feel resistance, and I am still willing to practice.”

You do not need to understand fully. The practice is like gently loosening a tight knot in your mind.

3. When upset during the day

Whenever you feel hurt, angry, anxious, or stressed, you can silently say:

“What I see is a form of vengeance.
I am willing to see this differently.”

This opens a small door for the Holy Spirit to reinterpret the situation for you.

V. Comparable ACIM Lessons

Lesson 22 is closely connected with several other Workbook lessons:

  • **Lesson 21: “I am determined to see things differently.”**

Lesson 21 expresses your willingness. Lesson 22 begins to show why you need to see differently: because what you now see is based on fear and attack.

  • **Lesson 17: “I see no neutral things.”**

If nothing is neutral, then everything you see is colored either by fear or by love. Lesson 22 points out that the ego’s coloring is vengeance.

  • **Lesson 20: “I am determined to see.”**

This is the decision to let true vision replace perception of attack. Lesson 22 exposes the attack-based perception so that you can let it go.

  • **Lesson 23: “I can escape from the world I see by giving up attack thoughts.”**

Lesson 22 shows you the world of attack; Lesson 23 shows you the way out: by releasing the attack thoughts that generate it.

Together, these lessons form a gentle ladder:

  • Notice your perception is not neutral.
  • Recognize it is based on attack and vengeance.
  • Become determined to see differently.
  • Learn that giving up attack thoughts is the doorway to a peaceful world.

VI. Closing Thought

You do not have to like this lesson or fully understand it for it to help you. You only need a little willingness to admit:

“Maybe the way I see the world is not the only way.
Maybe I have been mistaken about what things mean.
And maybe there is a Love in me that can show me another way.”

Today, let the Holy Spirit hold your hand as you look gently at the world you made. You are not being judged for what you see. You are being invited to awaken from it.
