Lesson 219 – “I am not a body. I am free. For I am still as God created me.”
Reviewing Lesson 199: “I am not a body. I am free.”
The Core Teaching
Lesson 219 continues the review of the central idea:
**“I am not a body. I am free. For I am still as God created me.”**
and pairs it with the earlier idea:
**“I am not a body. I am free.”** (Lesson 199)
This lesson is like a bell that keeps ringing the same truth:
Your identity is not the body, not the personality, not the story.
You are Spirit, created by God, unchanged and unchangeable.
What the ego is trying to hide
The ego’s entire “life” depends on you believing you are a body. If you are a body:
- You can be hurt.
- You can be abandoned.
- You can be sick.
- You can be guilty.
- You can die.
The ego wants you to feel small, temporary, and vulnerable, because fear keeps it alive. If you accept that you are Spirit, the ego’s whole thought system collapses.
So the ego hides:
1. *Your invulnerability.*
If you are not a body, nothing real can be threatened. The ego needs you to believe you are constantly under threat, so you will cling to it for “protection.”
2. *Your innocence.*
The ego insists you are guilty—of past mistakes, of not being “enough,” of failing others. But if you are as God created you, your true Self has never sinned, never changed, never left God. The ego hides this by focusing on behavior, history, and flaws.
3. *Your unity with everyone.*
If you are Spirit, and everyone else is Spirit, there is only one shared Life. The ego hides this by insisting on differences: bodies, personalities, roles, opinions. It tells you: “You are separate. You must defend yourself. You must compare, compete, and protect.”
4. *Your freedom.*
The ego says you are trapped by circumstances, by the past, by the body, by other people’s choices. The lesson says: “I am free.” Freedom is not about changing outer conditions; it is about remembering your true nature.
What the Holy Spirit is revealing
The Holy Spirit gently undoes the ego’s story by revealing:
1. *You are Spirit, not flesh.*
You are the loving, radiant extension of God’s Mind. You are not the pain, the aging, the tension, or the cravings. Those are passing clouds; you are the sky.
2. *Your will and God’s Will are the same.*
Deep down, you want exactly what God wants for you: peace, joy, love, and perfect safety. You are not in conflict with God. The conflict is only between your belief in the ego and your memory of truth.
3. *Nothing real can be harmed.*
The body can seem to suffer and die, but your Self cannot. This does not mean you ignore the body; it means you stop making it your identity and your god. You let it be a communication device, not a prison.
4. *You are already as God created you.*
You are not on a journey to become holy; you are on a journey to remember you are holy. The Holy Spirit reveals that salvation is not about changing who you are, but about changing what you believe about yourself.
Applied to Daily Life
Relationships
Imagine you’re in a conflict with a partner, friend, or family member. The ego says:
- “They hurt me.”
- “They don’t understand me.”
- “I must protect myself or attack back.”
Underneath is the belief: “I am a vulnerable body, and they are another body that can threaten me.”
Bringing in this lesson, you pause and remember:
- “I am not a body. I am free.”
- “They are not a body either. They are Spirit, like me.”
You might say inwardly:
“Holy Spirit, help me see my brother/sister as You see them. Help me remember we share the same Self.”
From this, you may speak more gently, listen more deeply, or choose silence instead of attack. You are less interested in being “right” and more interested in being at peace.
Work and career
At work, you may feel pressure, competition, or fear of failure. The ego says:
- “My worth depends on my performance.”
- “If I lose this job, I lose security.”
- “I must prove myself.”
This is all based on: “I am a body in a dangerous world, trying to survive.”
You bring in the lesson:
- “My worth is established by God.”
- “I am not a body. I am free.”
- “My real function is forgiveness and peace, wherever I seem to be.”
You still do your tasks, show up responsibly, and use your skills—but you stop using work to define your value. You become less anxious, more open, and often more effective, because you are not working from fear.
Illness and pain
When the body is sick or in pain, the ego rushes in:
- “This proves I am weak.”
- “This is punishment.”
- “I am at the mercy of the body.”
The Course never asks you to deny your experience. You can take medicine, see doctors, rest—these are not sins. But inwardly, you practice:
- “I am not a body. I am free.”
- “This pain does not define me.”
- “My Self remains whole and untouched.”
You might say:
“Holy Spirit, help me use this experience to remember who I am, not to reinforce fear.”
Sometimes this brings physical improvement; sometimes not. But it always can bring a deeper peace, a sense that you are held in something larger than the body’s condition.
Anxiety and daily stress
Stress often comes from believing:
- “I’m alone.”
- “It’s all up to me.”
- “If I don’t control everything, something terrible will happen.”
This is the ego’s body-identity speaking. You gently answer with the lesson:
- “I am Spirit, not this bundle of tension.”
- “I am carried by a Love that goes before me and walks with me.”
- “I am free to choose peace instead of this.”
You might pause during the day, close your eyes for a moment, and repeat:
“I am not a body. I am free. For I am still as God created me.”
Let the words sink in, not as a slogan, but as a quiet invitation to relax your grip on control.
Overcoming Resistance
This lesson can stir up a lot of resistance. Some common fears:
1. *“If I’m not a body, will I stop caring about my life and loved ones?”*
No. The Course does not ask you to become detached or cold. It asks you to love more truly, from Spirit rather than from fear. You will likely become more kind and present, not less.
2. *“It feels like I’m being asked to deny my experience.”*
You are not asked to deny that the body seems real to you now. You are asked to question whether it is your identity. You can acknowledge: “I feel this pain, this fear, this tension”—and still gently remember: “Yet this is not what I am.”
3. *“If I let go of the body-identity, who will I be?”*
This is the ego’s deepest fear: annihilation. But what actually disappears is not you, but your small, frightened self-concept. What remains is your true Self—peaceful, loving, and safe. The fear of losing yourself is really the fear of losing your chains.
4. *“It feels too big, too abstract.”*
That’s okay. You are not asked to fully understand it all at once. You are asked to be willing. A tiny willingness is enough for the Holy Spirit to work with.
You can say:
“I’m afraid of this idea, but I am willing to be shown its gentleness.”
That honesty opens the door.
Today’s Practice
Here is a simple way to practice Lesson 219 throughout the day.
1. Morning quiet time (5–15 minutes)
- Sit comfortably, close your eyes.
- Take a few gentle breaths.
- Slowly repeat to yourself:
“I am not a body. I am free.
For I am still as God created me.”
- Let the words sink in. Don’t force belief; just let them be spoken in your mind.
- If thoughts arise like “But I feel very much like a body,” just notice them and gently return to the idea.
- You might add:
“Holy Spirit, show me today that this is true. Help me see beyond appearances.”
2. Short practice periods during the day
Several times an hour, or whenever you feel tension, pause briefly:
- Take one conscious breath.
- Silently say:
“I am not a body. I am free.”
- If you’re in a situation with someone else, you might add silently:
“They are not a body. They are free.”
This turns ordinary moments into holy instants.
3. Using it with specific problems
When a specific worry or upset arises, you can say:
- “This fear about my health… I am not a body. I am free.”
- “This anger at my coworker… I am not a body. I am free.”
- “This anxiety about money… I am not a body. I am free.”
Then ask:
“Holy Spirit, how would You have me see this?”
Wait a moment in quiet. Even if no words come, you have opened the door to a different perception.
4. Evening reflection
Before sleep:
- Recall a few moments when you remembered the lesson.
- Thank yourself for your willingness, however small it seemed.
- If you forgot all day, simply say:
“I forgot, but I am willing now.
I am not a body. I am free.
For I am still as God created me.”
Then rest in that thought as you drift to sleep.
Comparable ACIM Lessons
Several lessons closely echo and deepen this one:
- **Lesson 199 – “I am not a body. I am free.”**
The original statement this review is emphasizing. It focuses on releasing the body from being your prison and letting it serve a holy purpose.
- **Lesson 94 – “I am as God created me.”**
Repeats the idea that your true Self has never changed, never been damaged, and never been guilty.
- **Lesson 91 – “Miracles are seen in light.”** and **Lesson 92 – “Miracles are seen in light, and light and strength are one.”**
These help you shift from the body’s “eyes” to the inner vision of Spirit.
- **Lesson 135 – “If I defend myself I am attacked.”**
Shows how identifying as a vulnerable body leads to constant defense and fear, and how letting go of that identity brings safety.
- **Lesson 163 – “There is no death. The Son of God is free.”**
Extends the idea that if you are not a body, death cannot touch what you truly are.
All of these lessons circle the same core truth from different angles: you are Spirit, safe in God, and nothing can change that.
Closing Thought
You do not have to force yourself to believe you are not a body. You only need a little willingness to question the story of fear and limitation.
Today, let this simple thought walk beside you:
“I am not a body. I am free.
For I am still as God created me.”
Let it be a gentle hand on your shoulder, a quiet reminder that beneath every worry, every conflict, every pain, there is a Self in you that is utterly untouched, forever loved, and completely free.
