Lesson 212 is a review lesson. Its central idea is:

**“I am not a body. I am free.

For I am still as God created me.”**

and it reviews Lesson 192:

*“I have a function God would have me fill.”*

So the focus today is:

You are not a body, and therefore you are not limited.

You are Spirit, and therefore you have a holy function that brings peace to you and to everyone.

I. The Core Teaching

1. “I am not a body. I am free.”

This is the Course’s central correction to the ego’s most cherished belief: “I am a separate, vulnerable self, living in a fragile body, in a dangerous world.”

The ego wants you to believe:

  • You *are* your body.
  • Your safety depends on what happens to your body.
  • Your worth depends on how your body looks, performs, or is judged.
  • Your happiness depends on what your body gets or avoids.

Why? Because if you are a body, then you are small, separate, and afraid. You can be attacked, abandoned, sick, and finally destroyed. The ego’s entire thought system rests on this fear. If you are a body, then guilt, fear, and conflict seem natural and inevitable.

The Holy Spirit gently undoes this by reminding you:

  • You are **mind**, not matter.
  • You are **Spirit**, an extension of God’s Love.
  • You are **unchangeably innocent**, because what God creates cannot be corrupted.
  • Your true Self cannot be harmed, diminished, or lost.

“I am not a body” does *not* mean you should deny your physical experience or pretend the body doesn’t exist. It means:

“My *identity* is not the body. The body is a temporary communication device, not my Self.”

When you accept this, even a little, fear begins to loosen. If you are not a body, then sickness, aging, criticism, rejection, and even death cannot touch what you truly are. They become passing shadows on the screen of a mind that is eternally safe in God.

2. “I have a function God would have me fill.”

If you are not a body, then your purpose cannot be bodily survival, pleasure, or status. Your true function comes from your Creator, not from the world’s demands or the ego’s ambitions.

In the Course, your function is always some form of:

  • **Forgiveness**
  • **Extending love**
  • **Remembering and reflecting God’s peace**

The ego says your function is to:

  • Protect yourself
  • Compete, compare, and judge
  • Get your needs met, often at someone else’s expense
  • Prove you are right and others are wrong

The Holy Spirit reveals that your function is to:

  • See innocence where the ego sees guilt
  • Offer blessing where the ego wants to attack or withdraw
  • Bring peace into situations where the ego expects conflict
  • Let your mind be used as a channel for Love

When you accept your true function, you feel a quiet sense of rightness: “This is what I’m here for.” It may not look dramatic. It might be as simple as a kind word, a gentle thought, a willingness to see another’s fear instead of their attack. But each time you choose your true function, you remember a little more clearly: I am not a body. I am free.

II. Applied to Daily Life

Let’s look at how this lesson can touch ordinary situations.

1. Relationships

*Ego view:*

“I am this body, and you are that body. You can hurt me. You can reject me. You can withhold love. I must protect myself, control you, or get from you what I need.”

From this view come jealousy, possessiveness, resentment, and fear of abandonment.

*Holy Spirit’s correction:*

“I am not a body, and neither are you. We are both Spirit, created by the same Love. Our true relationship is not one of bargaining, but of shared innocence.”

Applied:

  • When your partner criticizes you, instead of thinking, “They’re attacking me,” you can pause and remember: “We are not bodies. We are two frightened minds, both longing for love. My function is to see past this moment to the innocence in both of us.”
  • When you feel lonely or needy, you can say, “My completeness does not come from another body’s presence. I am as God created me—whole, loved, and complete. I can share love instead of seeking to fill a lack.”

This doesn’t mean you ignore unhealthy behavior or never set boundaries. It means you set them from love, not from hatred or fear.

2. Work

*Ego view:*

“My body and my skills are my value. My job defines me. If I fail, I am a failure. If others outshine me, I am less.”

This leads to stress, competition, and constant anxiety about performance.

*Holy Spirit’s correction:*

“I am not a body. My value is established by God. My work is simply a classroom where I practice my true function: forgiveness, kindness, honesty, and peace.”

Applied:

  • In a tense meeting, you silently remember: “I am not a body. I am free. My function here is to bring calm, not to win.”
  • When you fear losing your job, you remind yourself: “My livelihood is not my Source. God is my Source. My function is to trust and to extend love, even in uncertainty.”

You still do your best, show up responsibly, and use your skills. But your inner identity is not tied to success or failure.

3. Illness and Pain

*Ego view:*

“I am this body, and it is failing. I am at the mercy of sickness. I am weak and vulnerable.”

This brings fear, anger, and often self-blame.

*Holy Spirit’s correction:*

“The body can feel pain, but it is not you. You remain as God created you: whole, perfect Spirit. Your function is not to fix the body, but to let this situation become a place where fear is replaced with trust, and self-attack is replaced with gentleness.”

Applied:

  • When you feel pain, you might say:

“I acknowledge this sensation, but I am not this body. I am Spirit, held in God. Let this be used to deepen my trust and compassion, for myself and others.”

  • You seek appropriate care, but you do not make the body your identity or your god.

Healing, in ACIM, is primarily healing of the mind—releasing guilt and fear. Physical changes may or may not follow, but the peace of knowing you are not the body is the deepest healing.

4. Anxiety and Daily Stress

*Ego view:*

“I must control everything to be safe. If I don’t, something terrible will happen to me (this body, this personality).”

*Holy Spirit’s correction:*

“I am not a body. I am safe in God. My function is to trust and to extend peace, not to manage the universe.”

Applied:

  • Stuck in traffic, late for an appointment, you breathe and say:

“I am not a body. I am free. My function is peace, not panic. Let me bring a calm mind to this moment.”

  • Worried about money, you say:

“My security is not in numbers or possessions. My security is in God. Show me how to think and act with love and wisdom now.”

III. Overcoming Resistance

This lesson can stir up deep resistance. Some common fears:

1. *“If I’m not a body, will I ignore my body’s needs?”*

The Course does not ask you to neglect or abuse the body. It asks you to stop worshiping it. You can care for the body kindly, as you would care for a borrowed car: use it well, but don’t mistake it for yourself.

2. *“If my function is God’s, will I lose my individuality and desires?”*

The ego hears “God’s function” and imagines sacrifice. But your true function is the expression of your deepest joy. You don’t lose yourself; you discover your real Self, which is far more loving and peaceful than the small self you defend.

3. *“I’m afraid to let go of control.”*

The ego equates control with safety. The Holy Spirit offers trust instead of control. You’re not asked to abandon responsibility, only to release the belief that fear and tension are what keep you safe.

If you feel resistance, simply notice it and bring it to the Holy Spirit:

“I’m afraid of this idea. Please help me see differently. I don’t have to understand everything now. I’m just willing to be gently taught.”

Your willingness, not your perfection, is what matters.

IV. Today’s Practice

Here is a simple way to practice Lesson 212 throughout the day.

1. Morning (5–10 minutes)

  • Sit quietly, close your eyes, and take a few gentle breaths.
  • Slowly repeat, letting the words sink in:

“I am not a body. I am free.
For I am still as God created me.
I have a function God would have me fill.”

  • Then say inwardly:

“Holy Spirit, show me my function today.
Let me be a bringer of peace, a witness to innocence,
in every situation I meet.”

Sit a moment in quiet, simply willing to be used for love.

2. During the Day (frequent, brief reminders)

Whenever you feel:

  • Upset
  • Anxious
  • Angry
  • Guilty
  • Pressured

Pause, even for a few seconds, and say silently:

“I am not a body. I am free.
For I am still as God created me.
I have a function God would have me fill.”

Then add something like:

“In this situation, my function is peace.
Help me see with Your eyes, not the ego’s.”

Let this be your “reset button” throughout the day.

3. In Conflict or Emotional Pain

When you feel particularly triggered:

1. Acknowledge the feeling honestly:

“I feel scared / angry / hurt right now.”

2. Remember the lesson:

“I am not a body. I am free.”

3. Ask:

“What would it mean to remember my true function here?

How can I choose forgiveness, even a little?”

You don’t have to force a loving feeling. Just be willing to see the situation differently.

4. Evening (5 minutes)

Before sleep, review your day:

  • Where did you remember, “I am not a body”?
  • Where did you forget?

Offer both to the Holy Spirit:

“Where I remembered, thank You.
Where I forgot, please reinterpret it for me.
Let me learn from everything, and rest now in the truth
that I am still as God created me.”

V. Comparable ACIM Lessons

Several lessons echo and support Lesson 212:

  • **Lesson 199: “I am not a body. I am free.”**

This is the original statement that today’s lesson repeats. It explains in depth why identifying with the body is a form of imprisonment.

  • **Lesson 72: “Holding grievances is an attack on God’s plan for salvation.”**

Grievances block your awareness of your true function. When you forgive, you step into the function God gave you.

  • **Lesson 64: “Let me not forget my function.”**

This lesson emphasizes that your function is happiness, and that remembering it brings you peace.

  • **Lesson 94: “I am as God created me.”**

This is the foundation of today’s idea: your true Self is unchanged by anything that seems to happen in the world.

  • **Lesson 135: “If I defend myself I am attacked.”**

This shows how identifying as a vulnerable body leads to constant defense, while remembering your true identity brings safety without conflict.

All these lessons work together to loosen the ego’s grip and restore your awareness of yourself as Spirit, fulfilling a loving function in every moment.

VI. Closing Thought

You do not have to fully believe this lesson today for it to help you. You only need a little willingness to consider:

“Maybe I am more than this body.

Maybe my true purpose is to love and forgive.

Maybe I am still as God created me.”

Let that “maybe” be enough for now. The Holy Spirit will do the rest, gently, kindly, and in perfect timing.

You are not a body. You are free. And every small step you take in remembering this brings more light to you and to the world.
