“I am determined to see.”
— ACIM Lesson 20
The Core Teaching
Lesson 20 is a turning point in the Workbook. Up to now, the Course has been loosening your grip on what you think you see and what you think things mean. Here, something new enters: your *decision*.
“I am determined to see” is not about your physical eyes. It is a statement of inner willingness. It is you saying to God, to the Holy Spirit, and to your own Self:
“I no longer want the world I made through fear. I want to see with truth. I want to see with love.”
What does “to see” really mean?
In ACIM, “seeing” means *vision*—Christ’s vision. It is the way the Holy Spirit looks upon everything. Vision does not deny what your eyes report, but it refuses to agree with the ego’s interpretation of it.
To “see” in this lesson is to:
- See innocence where the ego sees guilt.
- See unity where the ego sees separation.
- See calls for love where the ego sees attacks.
- See purpose where the ego sees random chaos.
When you say, “I am determined to see,” you are choosing to value this inner vision more than your old way of looking at things.
What is the ego trying to hide?
The ego’s survival depends on you believing in a world of separate bodies, conflicting interests, and vulnerable lives. It wants you to see:
- A world of **victims and victimizers**.
- A self that is **weak, guilty, and alone**.
- A future that is **uncertain and threatening**.
- A past that is **full of real sins and real failures**.
The ego is trying to hide a very simple truth:
*You are not what you made of yourself. You are what God created you to be.*
If you truly saw with Christ’s vision, you would recognize:
- Your innocence and everyone’s innocence.
- The unreality of guilt.
- The impossibility of real loss in God.
- The presence of love behind every appearance.
The ego fears this because if you saw it clearly, you would no longer believe in the ego at all. Its entire thought system would dissolve in the light of your recognition.
So the ego uses the body’s eyes to “prove” its story:
- “Look how unfair they are.”
- “Look how sick you are.”
- “Look how limited your life is.”
- “Look how dangerous the world is.”
It wants you to say, “I am determined to see *this*,” meaning the world of fear, lack, and separation.
Lesson 20 gently invites you to shift your determination:
“I am determined to see *another way* of looking at everything.”
What is the Holy Spirit revealing?
The Holy Spirit uses the same situations, the same people, the same world, but gives them a *different purpose and a different meaning*.
He is revealing that:
- Every person is either expressing love or calling for love.
- Every conflict is a misunderstanding of who we are.
- Every fear is based on a false belief about yourself.
- Every moment is an opportunity to remember God.
When you say, “I am determined to see,” you are saying to the Holy Spirit:
“Show me what is really here.
Show me the love I’ve been overlooking.
Show me the innocence behind the masks.
Show me that I am safe in God.”
This lesson is a declaration of *willingness*. You don’t have to know how to see differently; you only need to be willing to be shown.
Applied to Daily Life
Let’s bring this into the situations that actually trouble you.
1. Relationships
Imagine you’re upset with a partner, friend, or family member. They said something sharp, forgot something important, or seemed indifferent to your feelings.
The ego’s “sight” says:
- “They don’t care.”
- “I’m not important.”
- “I must protect myself.”
To practice this lesson, you might pause and say inwardly:
- “I am determined to see.”
- “Holy Spirit, show me what I’m not seeing.”
You might then notice:
- They are afraid too.
- Their harshness is a defense, not a true attack.
- Underneath, they want to be loved and understood, just like you.
This doesn’t mean you deny your feelings or stay in harmful situations. It means you allow another *interpretation* of what is happening—one that opens the door to compassion instead of more guilt and attack.
2. Work and Career
At work, you may feel pressure, competition, or fear of failure. The ego says:
- “My worth depends on my performance.”
- “Other people are threats to my success.”
- “I am constantly judged.”
With this lesson, you invite a different way of seeing:
- “I am determined to see my work as a classroom for forgiveness and love.”
- “I am determined to see my colleagues as brothers, not rivals.”
- “I am determined to see that my true worth is given by God, not by my job.”
You might still do your tasks, meet deadlines, and act responsibly, but the *inner climate* changes. Anxiety begins to soften because you are no longer asking your job to tell you who you are.
3. Illness and the Body
When the body is in pain or illness, the ego shouts:
- “You are your body.”
- “You are weak and vulnerable.”
- “You are at the mercy of forces outside your control.”
To practice this lesson, you don’t pretend the symptoms aren’t there. Instead, you say:
- “I am determined to see this differently.”
- “Holy Spirit, help me see beyond this appearance.”
You might be gently shown:
- That you are still a mind, not a body.
- That your worth has not changed at all.
- That even here, in this condition, you can extend kindness, patience, and love—to yourself and others.
Healing, in ACIM, is first a healing of *perception*. The body may or may not change, but your mind can be restored to peace. That is the Holy Spirit’s primary goal.
4. Anxiety and Daily Stress
When you feel anxious about money, time, family, or the future, the ego insists:
- “You are alone in this.”
- “You must figure it all out.”
- “Something terrible might happen.”
Lesson 20 invites you to pause and say:
- “I am determined to see.”
- “I am determined to see that I am not alone.”
- “I am determined to see that help is here.”
You might then notice a small shift:
- A calmer thought arises.
- A practical idea appears.
- A sense that you are being carried, even if you don’t understand how.
You are training your mind to *ask for vision* instead of automatically believing the ego’s fearful pictures.
Overcoming Resistance
This lesson can feel unsettling because it implies a real change.
If you are determined to see, it means you are willing to *let go* of your current way of seeing. And the ego whispers:
- “But my judgments protect me.”
- “If I don’t see things the way I do, I’ll be taken advantage of.”
- “If I forgive, I’ll lose control.”
- “If I see differently, I might have to change.”
Underneath, there is a deeper fear:
“If I truly see, I might discover that the ‘me’ I think I am is not real.”
The Course understands this fear and never demands that you rip it away. It just asks for *a little willingness*.
You can say:
- “I am willing to be willing.”
- “I am determined to see, even if I am afraid.”
- “Holy Spirit, I am afraid of losing myself. Please show me that what I lose is only what hurts me.”
You are not being asked to give up anything real—only illusions of guilt, attack, and separation. But because you have invested so much in them, it can feel like a loss. Be gentle with yourself. The resistance itself is just another thing you can look at and say:
“I am determined to see this differently too.”
Today’s Practice: Step-by-Step
Lesson 20 suggests short, frequent practice periods.
Here is a simple way to follow it:
1. *Frequency*
- Aim for at least 3–4 practice periods today.
- If you can, do more—short and sincere is enough.
2. *Begin Each Practice Period*
- Close your eyes for a moment if you can.
- Say slowly, with as much sincerity as you can find:
*“I am determined to see.”*
3. *Let Your Eyes Move Around*
- Open your eyes and let them rest lightly on whatever is around you:
- A chair
- A window
- Your hands
- A picture
- A person, if appropriate
4. *Apply the Idea Specifically*
- As your gaze rests on each object, say quietly:
- “I am determined to see this [chair] differently.”
- “I am determined to see this [phone] differently.”
- “I am determined to see this [person] differently.”
You are not forcing a new meaning. You are *inviting* a new meaning.
5. *Include Emotional Situations*
- If something is bothering you today—a worry, a person, a memory—bring it gently to mind and say:
- “I am determined to see this situation differently.”
- “I am determined to see this person differently.”
- “I am determined to see myself differently.”
6. *End with Willingness*
- Finish each practice period with a quiet moment of openness:
- “Holy Spirit, I do not know how to see.
But I am willing.
Show me Your way of seeing.”
No strain. No effort to force a spiritual experience. Just a calm statement of intent.
Comparable ACIM Lessons
Lesson 20 is closely connected with several other Workbook ideas:
- **Lesson 1: “Nothing I see means anything.”**
This began the process of loosening your old meanings. Lesson 20 now says: I want a new way of seeing instead.
- **Lesson 7: “I see only the past.”**
You learned that your current perception is just a replay of old ideas. Lesson 20 is your decision to stop letting the past dictate what you see.
- **Lesson 10: “My thoughts do not mean anything.”**
If your current thoughts are meaningless, then you are free to choose a different Teacher. Lesson 20 chooses the Holy Spirit’s thought system.
- **Lesson 17: “I see no neutral things.”**
The ego never looks neutrally; it always looks through fear or desire. Lesson 20 is your choice to let vision, not judgment, interpret everything.
- **Lesson 21: “I am determined to see things differently.”**
This is the natural next step. Lesson 20 sets the general intention; Lesson 21 begins to apply it directly to your grievances.
Together, these lessons are training your mind to admit:
“My way of seeing has not brought me peace. I am ready to be shown another way.”
Closing Thought
Today, you are not being asked to be perfect. You are only asked to be *willing*.
Each time you say, “I am determined to see,” you are opening a small window in the mind. Through that opening, light will quietly enter. You may not notice it at first, but it is there, softening your fear, loosening your judgments, and gently reminding you:
You were created to see with love.
