*ACIM Lesson 264*

“I am surrounded by the Love of God.”

The Core Teaching

This lesson is a gentle correction of our most basic mistake: the belief that we are separate, vulnerable beings in a dangerous world. The Course tells us that, in truth, we are always and only held within the Love of God—completely safe, completely loved, and never alone.

To the ego, this sounds impossible. It looks at the world and says, “What do you mean, surrounded by Love? Look at the news. Look at my body. Look at my relationships. Look at my bank account.” The ego uses the evidence of the senses to “prove” that we are not safe, not loved, and not held.

But the Course is not talking about appearances. It is talking about what is real.

What is the ego trying to hide?

The ego’s survival depends on one idea: that you are separate—from God, from others, and even from your own true Self. If you are separate, then you must be afraid. You must defend, attack, compare, judge, and protect yourself. This is the ego’s entire world: a constant state of subtle (or not so subtle) tension.

So the ego tries to hide the fact that:

1. *You are still as God created you.*

You have not broken Heaven. You have not damaged your true Self. You are not guilty. The ego hides this by constantly reminding you of your “sins,” your mistakes, your flaws, and the flaws of others.

2. *You are never alone.*

The ego wants you to feel abandoned, unsupported, and on your own. It whispers, “No one really understands you. You have to handle this yourself.” It hides the presence of the Holy Spirit within your mind, always guiding, always comforting.

3. *You are held in a Love that cannot be threatened.*

The ego tells you that your safety lies in the body, in money, in relationships, in status, in control. It hides the deeper safety that comes from knowing you are Spirit, forever in God’s Mind, where nothing real can be harmed.

The ego’s goal is to keep your attention on the surface: the body, the story, the drama. If you look deeper, you begin to remember: “I am surrounded by the Love of God.” Once you really begin to feel this, the ego’s fear-based world starts to crumble.

What is the Holy Spirit revealing?

The Holy Spirit is the Voice for God in your mind. It gently reinterprets everything you see and feel. Through this lesson, the Holy Spirit is saying:

  • “You think you are surrounded by problems.

In truth, you are surrounded by Love.”

  • “You think you are surrounded by enemies or strangers.

In truth, you are surrounded by brothers.”

  • “You think you are surrounded by danger.

In truth, you are surrounded by perfect safety in God.”

The Holy Spirit reveals that the Love of God is not far away, not something you must earn, and not something you can lose. It is the very atmosphere of your being. You “breathe” it, live in it, move in it, and have your being in it—even when you are unaware of it.

This lesson is not asking you to create God’s Love around you. It is asking you to notice what is already there.

Applied to Daily Life

Let’s bring this into the situations where the ego screams the loudest.

1. Relationships

You’re in a tense conversation with a partner, friend, or family member. Old grievances are triggered. You feel attacked, misunderstood, or rejected.

The ego’s story:

“I am surrounded by conflict. I must defend myself. I am not safe here.”

The Holy Spirit’s reinterpretation:

“Pause. Breathe. In this very moment, you are surrounded by the Love of God. That Love is in you, and in them, whether either of you remembers it or not. You are safe in God, even if the words being spoken are unkind. You don’t need to attack or defend to be safe.”

From this awareness, you might:

  • Speak more gently.
  • Choose silence instead of a sharp retort.
  • Ask for guidance: “Holy Spirit, how would You have me see this person?”
  • Remember that both of you are frightened minds, calling for love in different ways.

2. Work and Responsibilities

You’re overwhelmed by deadlines, financial pressure, or fear of failure.

The ego’s story:

“My safety depends on performance, approval, and control. I am surrounded by demands and threats.”

The Holy Spirit’s reinterpretation:

“Your true safety does not depend on this job, this project, or this paycheck. You are surrounded by the Love of God. Let that Love guide your decisions, your priorities, and your words. You are not alone in this; Help is with you.”

From this awareness, you might:

  • Take a quiet moment before a meeting and repeat, “I am surrounded by the Love of God.”
  • Ask, “What is truly helpful for me to do next?” instead of running on panic.
  • Trust that if something falls away, it may be part of a larger plan of healing.

3. Illness and Pain

You or someone you love is sick. The body feels fragile, and fear arises.

The ego’s story:

“I am my body. My body is weak and vulnerable. Therefore I am weak and vulnerable.”

The Holy Spirit’s reinterpretation:

“You are not a body. You are Spirit, held in God’s Love. The body may appear to be sick, but your Self is untouched, whole, and safe. You are surrounded by Love, even in a hospital room, even in pain.”

This does not mean you deny symptoms or refuse help. It means you remember that your identity is not at stake. From this awareness, you might:

  • Receive medical care while silently affirming, “I am surrounded by the Love of God.”
  • See the caregivers as expressions of that Love.
  • Let fear soften, even if the body’s situation doesn’t instantly change.

4. Anxiety and Daily Stress

You feel a constant background anxiety—about the future, the world, your family.

The ego’s story:

“The world is dangerous. I must stay on guard. Something bad is coming.”

The Holy Spirit’s reinterpretation:

“Right now, in this instant, you are surrounded by the Love of God. The future is not your enemy. You walk in God. You are carried, not abandoned.”

From this awareness, you might:

  • Use this lesson as a “rescue thought” whenever anxiety spikes.
  • Let the words slow you down: “I… am… surrounded… by… the Love… of God.”
  • Notice that even in anxiety, there is a quiet place in you that is not afraid.

Overcoming Resistance

Why might this lesson feel difficult or unbelievable?

1. *It seems to contradict your senses.*

You see suffering, conflict, and loss. The mind says, “If I am surrounded by Love, why is this happening?” The Course is not denying that you see these things; it is saying that what you see is not the ultimate truth about you.

2. *You may feel unworthy.*

Part of you may think, “Maybe others are surrounded by God’s Love, but not me. I’ve made too many mistakes.” This is exactly the guilt the Course is undoing. The Love of God surrounds you because of what you are, not what you have done.

3. *Fear of letting go of control.*

To accept that you are surrounded by God’s Love is to admit that you are not in charge of everything. The ego fears this. It believes that control equals safety. The Holy Spirit gently shows you that trust is safer than control.

4. *Fear that Love will ask too much.*

Some part of you may fear: “If I really accept God’s Love, I’ll have to give up my grievances, my specialness, my familiar identity.” In a way, that’s true—but what you lose is only what hurts you. You do not lose anything real, anything truly joyful.

If you feel resistance, you are not failing. You are simply seeing how tightly the ego clings to its version of reality. Bring your resistance into the light:

“Holy Spirit, I want to believe this, but I don’t. Help me. Show me, in a way I can accept, that I am surrounded by Love.”

Today’s Practice

Here is a gentle way to practice Lesson 264 throughout the day.

1. Morning Quiet Time (5–15 minutes)

  • Sit comfortably, close your eyes if you wish.
  • Take a few slow breaths.
  • Silently say:

“I am surrounded by the Love of God.

I rest in this Love now.”

  • Imagine this Love as a soft, radiant light around you, within you, and extending beyond you. You don’t have to see it clearly; just be willing to *allow* it.
  • If thoughts come, don’t fight them. Just gently return to:

“I am surrounded by the Love of God.”

2. Short Reminders During the Day

Use this sentence as a frequent, quiet anchor:

  • Before a difficult conversation:

“I am surrounded by the Love of God, and so is my brother.”

  • When anxiety arises:

“Fear is not my home. I am surrounded by the Love of God.”

  • When you feel lonely:

“I am not alone. I am surrounded by the Love of God.”

Even 10–15 seconds of sincere repetition can shift your mind.

3. In Moments of Distress

When you feel triggered, upset, or afraid:

1. Pause.

2. Take one slow breath.

3. Silently say:

“Right now, even now, I am surrounded by the Love of God.”

4. Ask: “Holy Spirit, how would You have me see this?”

You don’t have to feel peaceful immediately. Just be willing to let this thought be truer than the fear.

4. Evening Reflection

Before sleep, review your day gently:

  • Recall a moment when you remembered this lesson.

Thank yourself for your willingness.

  • Recall a moment when you forgot and felt alone or afraid.

Without judgment, say:

“Even then, I was surrounded by the Love of God. I simply did not remember.”

Offer the whole day to the Holy Spirit, asking for a deeper experience of this truth tomorrow.

Comparable ACIM Lessons

This lesson is closely connected to several others:

  • **Lesson 41: “God goes with me wherever I go.”**

Both affirm that you are never alone and that God’s Presence is constant, not dependent on circumstances.

  • **Lesson 109: “I rest in God.”**

Lesson 264 adds the image of being surrounded by Love, which deepens the sense of resting in a safe, holy environment.

  • **Lesson 125: “In quiet I receive God’s Word today.”**

Quieting the mind allows you to feel that you are surrounded by Love, rather than just repeating the words.

  • **Lesson 132: “The world I see holds nothing that I want.”**

As you realize the world’s promises cannot truly satisfy, you become more open to the idea that your real safety and fulfillment are in God’s Love.

  • **Lesson 261: “God is my refuge and security.”**

Lesson 264 is a natural extension: if God is your refuge, then His Love must be all around you, always.

Closing Thought

You do not have to make God’s Love surround you. It already does. Your only task is to let this be more important than the ego’s fearful stories for a few moments at a time.

Let today be a gentle experiment:

“Just for now, I will consider that I am not alone, not exposed, not abandoned. I am surrounded by the Love of God—and I am willing to remember.”
