Lesson 173 is a review lesson, repeating:
- **God is but Love, and therefore so am I.**
- **I will step back and let Him lead the way.**
- **I walk with God in perfect holiness.**
The Course uses these lines to gently gather together everything it has been teaching:
You are not what you think you are. You are Love, because God is Love. And when you stop trying to lead your life alone, you remember you are not separate, not guilty, and never truly alone.
Let’s explore this slowly and kindly.
I. The Core Teaching
1. “God is but Love, and therefore so am I.”
This is the central metaphysical statement:
- **God is only Love.** No anger, no punishment, no judgment, no attack.
- If God is only Love, and you were created by God, then **your reality is only Love** as well.
- Everything else you believe about yourself—guilt, shame, unworthiness, fear—is a **dream**, a mistaken identity.
The ego’s entire thought system depends on you not knowing this. If you fully accepted that you are only Love, the ego would simply disappear, because it has no function in Love.
2. “I will step back and let Him lead the way.”
This is the bridge between illusion and truth.
- To “step back” means: *I will not let my ego’s interpretation of anything be my guide.*
- To “let Him lead the way” means: *I will let the Holy Spirit reinterpret everything for me.*
The ego tries to run your life through:
- Control
- Defensiveness
- Judgment
- Planning based on fear
- Constant comparison and evaluation
The Holy Spirit leads through:
- Quiet guidance
- Inner peace
- Gentle correction of your thoughts
- Trust instead of control
- A sense of being carried, not burdened
You are not asked to give up anything real. You are asked to *give up your own leadership*, which has been based on fear and separation, and let the part of your mind that remembers God guide you.
3. “I walk with God in perfect holiness.”
This is the *result* of stepping back:
- You discover you are not alone.
- You realize you have never been separated from God.
- “Perfect holiness” does not mean you behave perfectly in the world. It means that in truth, you are whole, innocent, untouched by guilt.
The ego is trying to hide this by convincing you that:
- You are damaged or broken.
- You have sinned and deserve punishment.
- You are fundamentally different from others.
- You must struggle alone.
The Holy Spirit reveals:
- You are innocent, because your true Self never left God.
- You share the same holiness with everyone.
- You are always accompanied, always held in Love.
- Your “problems” are misperceptions, and they can be undone.
So the metaphysical meaning of Lesson 173 is:
*Your true Identity is Love, shared with God. You do not know how to return to this awareness by yourself, but you are not required to. Step back, let the Holy Spirit lead, and you will discover that you walk with God in a holiness that has never been lost.*
II. Applied to Daily Life
Let’s bring this into very ordinary situations.
1. Relationships
Suppose you’re in conflict with a partner, friend, or family member.
The ego says:
- “I’m right, they’re wrong.”
- “I need to protect myself.”
- “If I forgive, I’ll be weak or taken advantage of.”
- “They are the problem.”
To *step back and let Him lead the way* might look like:
- Pausing before reacting.
- Saying inwardly: *“God is but Love, and therefore so am I. I will step back and let Him lead the way.”*
- Asking: *“Holy Spirit, how would You have me see this person?”*
You may feel guided to:
- Say less instead of more.
- Listen more deeply.
- Admit your own fear instead of defending it.
- Offer a simple, honest apology.
- Or say nothing outwardly, but change your *inner* perception from attack to a call for love.
To *walk with God in perfect holiness* here means:
- You remember both you and the other person are innocent at the level of truth.
- You see their behavior as coming from fear, not from real evil.
- You let the Holy Spirit reinterpret the situation as an opportunity to remember Love, not to prove separation.
2. Work and Career
At work, the ego runs on:
- Anxiety about performance
- Fear of failure or rejection
- Competition and comparison
- Needing to prove your worth
To practice this lesson at work:
- Before a meeting, silently say:
“God is but Love, and therefore so am I. I will step back and let Him lead the way.”
- Ask: *“Holy Spirit, what is this meeting for?”*
The answer will always be some form of: “To extend Love, to learn peace, to remember your shared interests.”
You might be guided to:
- Speak calmly instead of anxiously.
- Not join in gossip or attack.
- Be honest about what you know and don’t know.
- Trust that your worth is not on trial.
To *walk with God in perfect holiness* at work means:
- Your identity is not your job title, income, or performance.
- You bring a quiet, non-anxious presence into stressful environments.
- You remember that everyone there is afraid of not being enough—and you silently bless them.
3. Illness and the Body
When you’re sick or in pain, the ego says:
- “My body is me.”
- “I am weak, vulnerable, at the mercy of the world.”
- “God must be far away, or this wouldn’t be happening.”
To step back:
- You don’t have to deny symptoms or avoid medicine.
- You gently say:
“God is but Love, and therefore so am I. I walk with God in perfect holiness.”
- You ask: *“Holy Spirit, help me see this differently.”*
You may be guided to:
- Rest without guilt.
- Seek appropriate help.
- Let go of self-attack thoughts (“I caused this by being bad”).
- Use the time of illness as a quiet space to deepen trust.
Holiness here means:
- Your true Self is not sick, not broken, not vulnerable.
- The body’s condition does not define your worth or your reality.
- You are still, and always, carried in Love.
4. Anxiety and Daily Stress
In daily stress—traffic, bills, deadlines, family demands—the ego whispers:
- “You’re alone.”
- “It’s all up to you.”
- “If you don’t control everything, something terrible will happen.”
To practice:
- In a moment of stress, pause and breathe.
- Say: *“I will step back and let Him lead the way.”*
- Then: *“God is but Love, and therefore so am I.”*
- Ask: *“What if I’m not alone in this? What if I’m being led?”*
You may feel a small shift:
- A sense that you can take one step at a time.
- A softening of the inner pressure.
- A willingness to trust that you are supported, even if you don’t see how.
III. Overcoming Resistance
This lesson can feel threatening to the ego for several reasons:
1. *Fear of losing control*
The ego believes: “If I don’t lead, I will be harmed.”
The Course gently says: “You have been leading, and it has brought you fear. Try another Guide.”
2. *Fear of unworthiness*
“I walk with God in perfect holiness” may feel like too much. You might think:
- “Not me. I’ve done too much wrong.”
- “I’m not spiritual enough.”
This is exactly the ego’s defense. The Holy Spirit says:
- “Your holiness is not earned. It is given, because you were created holy.”
3. *Fear of change*
If you let the Holy Spirit lead, life may change. Relationships, jobs, habits might shift. The ego says:
- “Better the misery I know than the Love I don’t understand.”
You don’t need to force yourself to accept the lesson all at once. You can say:
- “Holy Spirit, I’m afraid to let go. Please help me be willing to be willing.”
- “I don’t fully believe I walk with God in perfect holiness, but I’m willing to consider that maybe it’s true.”
The Course never shames your resistance. It simply invites you, again and again, to try a little willingness.
IV. Today’s Practice – Step by Step
Lesson 173 is a review. The central line is repeated before each idea:
**God is but Love, and therefore so am I.**
Then you add the specific idea:
1. *Morning Practice (10–15 minutes if possible)*
- Sit quietly, close your eyes.
- Gently repeat:
“God is but Love, and therefore so am I.”
- Let the words sink in. Don’t force belief; just let them be present.
- Then add:
“I will step back and let Him lead the way.”
- Imagine your day ahead. See yourself stepping back from anxiety, control, and judgment, and letting a quiet, loving Presence guide you.
- Again repeat:
“God is but Love, and therefore so am I.”
- Rest in silence a few minutes.
2. *Second Practice Period (later in the day)*
- Again sit quietly.
- Start with:
“God is but Love, and therefore so am I.”
- Then add:
“I walk with God in perfect holiness.”
- Let yourself picture walking through your day, not alone, but side by side with God.
- Imagine this Presence with you in conversations, tasks, and quiet moments.
- Close again with:
“God is but Love, and therefore so am I.”
3. *Short, Frequent Reminders Throughout the Day*
- When you feel stressed, afraid, angry, or guilty, pause and say silently:
- *“God is but Love, and therefore so am I.”*
- Then whichever of the two ideas feels most needed:
- *“I will step back and let Him lead the way,”* or
- *“I walk with God in perfect holiness.”*
- Use these lines like a gentle hand on your shoulder, turning you back toward peace.
4. *Before Sleep*
- As you lie in bed, repeat softly:
“God is but Love, and therefore so am I.”
- Let the day be given back to the Holy Spirit.
- Ask: *“Show me, even in dreams, that I walk with You.”*
V. Comparable ACIM Lessons
These ideas are closely connected to several other lessons:
- **Lesson 61: “I am the light of the world.”**
Both speak of your true identity as something holy and innocent, not arrogant but given by God.
- **Lesson 62: “Forgiveness is my function as the light of the world.”**
Forgiveness is how you practice walking with God and stepping back from the ego.
- **Lesson 70: “My salvation comes from me.”**
Not from the world, not from circumstances, but from the choice of Teacher in your mind.
- **Lesson 155: “I will step back and let Him lead the way.”**
The exact idea reviewed here, emphasizing trust in guidance.
- **Lesson 156: “I walk with God in perfect holiness.”**
The second idea in this review, stressing that you are never alone and never truly guilty.
All of these lessons point to the same truth:
You are not the frightened self you think you are. You are the Holy Son of God, still as God created you.
VI. Closing Thought
Today, you are not asked to be perfect. You are only asked to be *willing* to step back, even for a moment, and let Love lead instead of fear.
Let these words accompany you gently:
**God is but Love, and therefore so am I.
I will step back and let Him lead the way.
I walk with God in perfect holiness.**
You do not have to make this true.
It is already true.
You are only learning to remember.
