Lesson 99: “Salvation is my only function here.”
The Core Teaching
This lesson is very simple in words, but very deep in meaning. It tells you that, beneath all the roles you seem to play in the world, you have only one real function: salvation.
In Course language, “salvation” does not mean pleasing a judgmental God or being rescued from a sinful nature. It means awakening from a dream of separation, fear, and guilt, and remembering that you are still as God created you: innocent, whole, and joined with all life.
“Salvation is my only function here” really means:
- My only real purpose is to remember the truth of what I am.
- My only real purpose is to accept that I am not guilty, and neither is anyone else.
- My only real purpose is to let the Holy Spirit reinterpret everything in the light of love.
What is the ego trying to hide?
The ego is the belief that you are a separate, vulnerable self, cut off from God and from everyone else. It survives by convincing you that:
1. You are guilty.
2. You are on your own.
3. You must protect yourself.
4. The world is the cause of your pain.
5. Salvation lies in something outside you (a person, job, body, achievement, or spiritual status).
The ego is terrified of the idea that salvation is your only function, because if that is true, then:
- You are not a victim.
- You are not guilty.
- You are not separate.
- You are not defined by your past.
- You are not what the ego says you are.
The ego wants you to believe your function is to:
- Survive.
- Defend yourself.
- Prove your worth.
- Fix the world.
- Accumulate: money, status, admiration, spiritual credentials.
It hides from you the simple truth that your only real function is to accept the Atonement—the correction of the belief in separation—within your own mind. If you accept that, the ego’s entire thought system collapses.
What is the Holy Spirit revealing?
The Holy Spirit, the Voice for God in your mind, gently reveals that:
- You are not the ego.
- You are not the body.
- You are not your story.
- You are the beloved, innocent Child of God.
The Holy Spirit shows you that salvation is not a future event or a reward. It is a present choice to see with love instead of fear.
“Salvation is my only function here” means:
- In every situation, I can choose to see innocence instead of guilt.
- I can choose peace instead of conflict.
- I can choose to remember that my brother and I share the same interests, because we share the same Self.
The Holy Spirit reveals that your function is not to change the world, but to change your mind about the world. When your mind is healed, your perception of everything changes—relationships, work, health, even your sense of self.
Applied to Daily Life
Let’s bring this down to very practical examples.
Relationships
Suppose you feel hurt by a partner, friend, or family member. The ego says:
- “They are to blame.”
- “I must defend myself.”
- “I must prove I’m right.”
Your egoic “function” becomes self-protection, attack, or withdrawal.
This lesson invites a different purpose:
- “My only function here is salvation.”
- “My only function is to remember the truth.”
- “My only function is to let the Holy Spirit reinterpret this.”
In practice, this might look like:
- Pausing before reacting.
- Saying inwardly: “I could see peace instead of this.”
- Asking: “Holy Spirit, help me see the innocence in both of us.”
You may still speak up, set boundaries, or walk away from harmful behavior. But now your inner purpose is healing, not attack. You are not trying to win; you are allowing your mind to be healed of the belief in separation.
Work and Career
At work, the ego tells you your function is:
- To succeed.
- To compete.
- To prove your worth.
- To control outcomes.
This can create stress, anxiety, and a constant sense of “not enough.”
With this lesson, you gently remember:
- “My only real function here is salvation.”
- “I am here to learn forgiveness, trust, and peace.”
- “I am here to remember who I am and who my brothers are.”
So when a coworker criticizes you, instead of collapsing into guilt or exploding in anger, you can pause and say:
- “This is another chance to practice my only function.”
- “I can choose to see this as a call for love, not an attack.”
- “Holy Spirit, what would You have me do or say?”
You still do your job, meet deadlines, and handle responsibilities, but your inner purpose shifts from ego goals to healing and remembering the truth.
Illness and the Body
When the body is sick or in pain, the ego says:
- “I am this body.”
- “I am weak and vulnerable.”
- “I am at the mercy of the world.”
The ego’s function here is to reinforce fear and helplessness.
This lesson does not ask you to deny the body’s condition or refuse help. It asks you to remember that your deeper function is not to perfect the body, but to let your mind be healed of fear.
You might say:
- “I will take the medicine, see the doctor, rest the body—but my only real function is salvation.”
- “Holy Spirit, help me use this situation to remember I am not a body. I am still as God created me.”
- “Let this be used for healing my mind of guilt and fear.”
The body’s condition becomes a classroom, not a prison.
Anxiety and Daily Stress
When you feel anxious about money, the future, family, or world events, the ego says:
- “You must worry to stay safe.”
- “You must control everything.”
- “You are alone.”
This lesson offers a new anchor:
- “Salvation is my only function here.”
- “My function is not to manage the universe.”
- “My function is to choose peace instead of fear.”
In a moment of anxiety, you might pause and say:
- “I am using this situation to remember my true function.”
- “I am willing to see this differently.”
- “Holy Spirit, I give You this fear. Show me another way to see this.”
You may still make plans, take wise action, and be responsible. But you no longer believe your safety lies in control. You allow your mind to rest in a deeper trust.
Overcoming Resistance
Why might this lesson feel difficult?
1. *Fear of losing identity*
The ego fears that if salvation is your only function, then all its little projects—status, image, grievances, specialness—will lose importance. It whispers: “If you accept this, you’ll become nothing. You’ll lose everything that makes you ‘you’.”
In truth, you do not lose anything real. You lose only fear, guilt, and conflict. You keep everything that is loving, kind, joyful, and creative—because that is what you are.
2. *Fear of responsibility*
The idea that salvation is your function can feel like a heavy burden: “I’m responsible for salvation?” The ego turns this into pressure.
The Course means something gentler: your only function is to accept what is already true. You are not asked to save the world by effort, but to let your mind be healed. The Holy Spirit does the work; you only consent.
3. *Attachment to grievances*
Part of the mind wants to keep certain grievances, because they seem to justify your separation: “I am right to be hurt.” The idea that salvation is your only function means these grievances will be undone. The ego sees that as loss of power.
But grievances do not protect you; they imprison you. Letting them go is not weakness; it is freedom.
4. *Doubt about worthiness*
You may feel, “I’m not spiritual enough,” or “I’ve made too many mistakes.” The ego uses guilt to say you are not worthy of such a holy function.
The Holy Spirit says: your function is given by God, not earned by you. It is yours because of what you are, not because of what you’ve done.
Today’s Practice
Here is a simple way to practice Lesson 99 today. Adapt as needed, but keep the spirit of gentleness.
1. Morning Quiet Time (10–15 minutes)
- Sit comfortably. Close your eyes.
- Begin by slowly repeating the idea:
“Salvation is my only function here.”
- Let the words sink in. Then add:
“God still is Love, and this is not His Will.”
(Meaning: all the pain and fear you see are not God’s Will.)
- Gently say within:
- “Holy Spirit, show me what it means that salvation is my only function.”
- “I am willing to remember the truth about myself and everyone.”
- Spend a few minutes in quiet, simply resting. If thoughts come, let them pass. Each time you notice you’ve wandered, return to:
“Salvation is my only function here.”
- End with a simple prayer:
- “Let me remember my function today in every situation. I am willing to see with Your eyes, not the ego’s.”
2. Hourly Remembrance (Short moments)
Once each hour, or as often as you can remember:
- Pause for a few breaths.
- Silently repeat:
“Salvation is my only function here.”
“I am here to forgive and to remember the truth.”
- If you are in the middle of something stressful, add:
“Holy Spirit, let me see this as a chance to fulfill my only function.”
Let this be a reset button throughout the day.
3. Using It in Specific Situations
Whenever you feel upset, anxious, angry, guilty, or hurt:
1. Notice the feeling.
2. Say inwardly:
- “I am not upset for the reason I think.”
- “Salvation is my only function here.”
3. Ask:
- “Holy Spirit, how can this be used for healing?”
4. Be willing to see the other person—and yourself—as innocent, even if you don’t yet feel it.
You are not asked to force a feeling, only to open the door.
4. Evening Reflection
Before sleep, take a few minutes to look back over the day:
- Where did you remember your function?
- Where did you forget?
Do not judge yourself. Simply say:
- “I was mistaken there, but my function has not changed.”
- “I accept the correction now. Salvation is still my only function.”
Offer the day to the Holy Spirit, trusting that what you could not heal, He will gently undo in your mind.
Comparable ACIM Lessons
Several lessons are closely related to Lesson 99:
- **Lesson 61: “I am the light of the world.”**
This introduces your true function as the bringer of light, not darkness. Lesson 99 deepens this by naming that function as salvation.
- **Lesson 62: “Forgiveness is my function as the light of the world.”**
Here the Course links your function directly with forgiveness. Lesson 99 echoes this: salvation is your function, and salvation is accomplished through forgiveness.
- **Lesson 65: “My only function is the one God gave me.”**
This prepares the mind to accept that your function is not self-invented. Lesson 99 specifies what that God-given function is: salvation.
- **Lesson 72: “Holding grievances is an attack on God’s plan for salvation.”**
This shows how grievances block your function. Lesson 99 calls you back to that plan as your only real purpose.
- **Lesson 97: “I am spirit.”**
Recognizing yourself as spirit makes it possible to accept a spiritual function. Lesson 99 builds on this identity: as spirit, your function is salvation.
Closing Thought
You are not being asked to become something you are not. You are being invited to remember what you have always been: the innocent, loving extension of God, whose only real function is to awaken from the dream of fear.
Today, let this simple idea walk with you:
“Salvation is my only function here.”
Let it soften your judgments, quiet your fears, and open your heart. You do not have to do this perfectly. You only have to be willing. The Holy Spirit will do the rest.
