Lesson 95 – “I am one Self, united with my Creator.”
The Core Teaching
This lesson is a gentle but radical reminder of who you really are. It is not trying to improve the ego or make a “better” self. It is inviting you to remember that you are not a separate, fragile personality at all. You are one Self, created by God, sharing His Mind, His Love, His Life.
The Course says you are not many selves—one self at work, another in relationships, another when you’re angry, another when you’re “spiritual.” You are one Self. The apparent fragmentation into many selves is the ego’s dream.
What is the ego trying to hide?
The ego’s central lie is:
“You are separate—from God, from others, and even from yourself.”
To keep this lie going, the ego:
1. *Invents a personal identity*
- “I am this body, this history, this personality, these preferences.”
- “I am my mistakes, my successes, my traumas, my talents.”
2. *Keeps you focused on differences*
- “I’m better than them.”
- “I’m worse than them.”
- “I’m different, special, separate.”
Whether it’s superiority or inferiority, both serve the same purpose: separation.
3. *Uses guilt and unworthiness*
- “If you really knew me, you’d see I’m not lovable.”
- “God must be disappointed in me.”
This sense of guilt is the ego’s protective wall. If you feel guilty, you won’t want to look too deeply within. You’ll be afraid of what you’ll find.
4. *Makes you afraid of your true magnitude*
The Course says you are afraid of the light in you. The ego whispers:
- “If you accept how holy you are, you’ll lose your individuality.”
- “You’ll have to give up everything you like.”
- “You’ll be crushed by responsibility or expectations.”
So the ego tries to hide your true Self by convincing you that you are small, vulnerable, and alone—and that this is somehow safer than being unlimited Love.
What is the Holy Spirit revealing?
The Holy Spirit speaks for the truth in your mind. This lesson is His message:
- **You are one Self, not many.**
Beneath all your moods, roles, and stories, there is a steady, changeless Self. It is pure love, pure innocence, pure peace.
- **You are united with your Creator.**
You have not left God. You have not broken Heaven. You have not changed what you are. You remain as God created you—whole, safe, and loved.
- **You share the same Self with everyone.**
The light in you is the same light in every brother and sister. There are not many separate minds, but one shared Mind expressing in many forms.
- **Your problems are not what they seem.**
Every problem is a form of forgetting who you are. Every healing is a form of remembering:
“I am one Self, united with my Creator.”
The Holy Spirit is not asking you to “become” something holy. He is asking you to *accept* what is already true.
Applied to Daily Life
Let’s bring this into the situations where you actually live.
1. Relationships
When you feel hurt, jealous, rejected, or angry, the ego says:
- “They did this to me.”
- “I’m not enough.”
- “They don’t care about me.”
In that moment, you feel like a small, separate self who must defend or withdraw.
To practice this lesson in a relationship conflict, you might pause and say inwardly:
“I am one Self, united with my Creator.
I cannot be attacked, nor can I attack.
We share the same Self, even if I don’t see it right now.”
Then gently ask:
- “If we share the same Self, what is really happening here?”
- “What if this is just a call for love—from them, from me, or from both?”
You may still need to set boundaries or have honest conversations, but you do it from a quieter place, not from the frantic urge to prove your worth or defend your identity.
2. Work and Career
At work, the ego says:
- “I am my performance.”
- “I am my title.”
- “I am my income.”
This creates pressure, competition, and fear of failure.
Practicing this lesson at work might look like:
- Before a meeting:
“I am one Self, united with my Creator. My worth is not on trial here.”
- When you feel criticized:
“My value is given by God, not by opinions. I remain as He created me.”
- When you feel envy:
“We share the same Self. Their success does not diminish me. There is no real competition in truth.”
You become less driven by anxiety and more guided by quiet inner wisdom.
3. Illness and the Body
Illness can make the ego’s story feel very real:
- “I am this body.”
- “I am weak, limited, broken.”
This lesson doesn’t ask you to deny symptoms or skip needed care. It invites you to remember:
“I am one Self, united with my Creator.
My true Self cannot be sick or harmed.
I can bring this remembrance into my experience of the body.”
You might sit quietly and say:
- “This body may feel pain, but I am not this body.”
- “Let me see this situation through the eyes of the Self I share with God.”
Often this softens fear and brings a surprising sense of inner safety, even if the outer situation hasn’t changed yet.
4. Anxiety and Daily Stress
Anxiety usually arises from believing:
- “I’m on my own.”
- “It’s all up to me.”
- “I don’t know what will happen, and I’m not safe.”
This lesson answers:
“You are one Self, united with your Creator.
You are not alone. You are held in a Mind that knows only love.”
In a moment of anxiety, you might:
- Place a hand on your heart.
- Breathe slowly.
- Repeat: “I am one Self, united with my Creator. In this moment, I am safe in God.”
You are not trying to force calm. You are gently remembering that your true Self is already calm.
Overcoming Resistance
This lesson can stir up resistance because it challenges the ego’s entire identity structure.
Why it might feel difficult
1. *Fear of losing individuality*
You may think, “If I’m one Self with everyone, do I disappear?”
No. You do not lose anything real. You lose only the illusion of being a lonely, separate self. What remains is a sense of shared joy and connection that feels more intimate than anything the ego offers.
2. *Feeling unworthy*
You might think, “This sounds beautiful, but not for me. I’ve done too much wrong.”
The lesson is given *because* you feel unworthy, not because you’ve outgrown that feeling. Your unworthiness is part of the illusion the Holy Spirit is undoing.
3. *Fear of God*
Deep down, many believe God is a judge, not a loving Creator. So “united with my Creator” can sound threatening.
The Course gently corrects this: God is pure Love, with no condemnation. To be united with Him is to be united with perfect safety.
4. *Attachment to specialness*
The ego wants to be special—either “especially good” or “especially bad.” Being one Self with everyone feels like losing that special status.
But what you gain is a sense of equality, innocence, and shared holiness that is far more satisfying than being “special” ever was.
If you feel doubt, resistance, or even irritation with this lesson, that’s okay. You are not failing. You are simply noticing the ego’s fear. Just bring that fear to the Holy Spirit:
“I’m afraid of this idea. Please help me see gently.
I’m willing to be shown, even if I don’t fully understand yet.”
Today’s Practice (Lesson 95 Style)
The original lesson suggests structure and repetition. You can adapt it in a way that feels kind but sincere.
1. Morning Practice (10–15 minutes if possible)
- Sit quietly, close your eyes, and relax your body.
- Begin by saying slowly:
“I am one Self, united with my Creator.”
“I am one Self, at one with every aspect of creation, and limitless in power and in peace.”
- Let the words sink in. Don’t strain to “believe” them. Just allow them to be spoken in your mind.
- If distracting thoughts arise, gently answer them with:
“I am one Self, united with my Creator.”
- Imagine this Self as a quiet, steady light within you—unchanging, peaceful, kind.
2. Hourly Remembrance (very short)
Once each hour (or as often as you remember), pause briefly and say:
“I am one Self, united with my Creator.”
If you can, add:
“I am one Self, united with my brothers, and I am at peace.”
Even 10–20 seconds is enough to re-orient your mind.
3. Use in Specific Situations
Whenever you feel upset, anxious, angry, or guilty, pause and say:
“I am one Self, united with my Creator.
This feeling is not the truth of what I am.”
Then ask:
“Holy Spirit, how would my one Self see this?”
You may not hear words, but you might feel a softening, a small shift in perspective.
4. Evening Practice
Before sleep, take a few minutes to review your day:
- Notice moments when you forgot your true Self.
- Without judgment, bring them to the light:
“Even here, I was one Self, united with my Creator, though I forgot.”
- End with:
“I rest in the Self I share with God. I am safe.”
Comparable ACIM Lessons
This lesson is closely connected with several others:
- **Lesson 35: “My mind is part of God’s. I am very holy.”**
Both affirm that your mind is not separate from God and that your holiness is given, not earned.
- **Lesson 45: “God is the Mind with which I think.”**
Points to the same shared Mind. Lesson 95 deepens this into the recognition of one Self.
- **Lesson 61: “I am the light of the world.”**
The “light of the world” is the same one Self this lesson speaks of. Not a personal brightness, but the light of Christ in you.
- **Lesson 94: “I am as God created me.”**
Lesson 95 builds directly on this: if you are as God created you, then you must be one Self, united with Him.
- **Lesson 110: “I am as God created me.” (again)**
This idea is repeated three times in the Workbook because it is central to the Course’s thought system. Lesson 95 is one way of unpacking what that really means.
Closing Thought
You do not have to force yourself to “reach” this truth today. You are not trying to build this Self; you are letting yourself remember it. Even a tiny willingness to say, “Maybe this is true of me” opens a door the Holy Spirit can use.
Let today be a day of gentle remembering:
“I am not many selves, struggling and afraid.
I am one Self, united with my Creator,
and I cannot lose what God has made me to be.”
