I am under no laws but God’s

Lesson 76: “I am under no laws but God’s.”
I. The Core Teaching
This lesson is a radical invitation to question everything the ego has taught you about what governs your life.
The ego believes you are a vulnerable body in a dangerous world, subject to countless external laws:
- laws of economics
- laws of medicine and biology
- laws of aging and decay
- laws of social approval and rejection
- laws of guilt and punishment
It tells you: “Your safety depends on obeying these laws. Your happiness depends on managing them well. Your peace depends on controlling what happens.”
Underneath all of this is the ego’s central “law”:
*You are separate from God, and therefore you are on your own.*
What the Ego Is Trying to Hide
The ego’s entire survival depends on you believing in these “laws of the world.” It wants to hide one simple fact:
**You remain as God created you—spirit, whole, safe, and unchangeable.**
If this is true, then:
- you cannot truly be harmed
- you cannot truly lack
- you cannot truly be guilty
- you cannot truly be abandoned
The ego’s fear is that if you remember this, you will stop believing in its world of fear and control. You will stop taking its rules seriously. And then the ego, as a belief system of separation, will simply fade.
So the ego hides your true safety behind a maze of false laws:
- “You can’t be happy unless other people behave a certain way.”
- “You can’t be safe unless your body is protected in specific ways.”
- “You can’t be worthy unless you achieve, succeed, and prove yourself.”
- “You can’t be secure unless you have enough money, status, or guarantees.”
These are all variations of one lie: *“You are not safe in God.”*
What the Holy Spirit Is Revealing
The Holy Spirit gently reveals the opposite:
**Only God’s laws are real, and you are under no laws but His.**
What are God’s “laws”? They are not rules that restrict you. They are the nature of reality itself:
- The law of Love: You were created by Love, as Love, and for Love.
- The law of Oneness: Nothing real can be separate from God or from each other.
- The law of Innocence: Guilt is not of God and has no real power.
- The law of Abundance: What you are in truth cannot lack, because God withholds nothing from Himself.
- The law of Peace: Your mind rests in God, and nothing real can threaten that peace.
To say, “I am under no laws but God’s,” is to begin loosening your belief in the world’s script. It does not mean you recklessly ignore practical things. It means you stop giving them the power to define your safety, identity, or worth.
You are learning to say:
- “My job is not my source—God is.”
- “My partner is not my source—God is.”
- “My bank account is not my source—God is.”
- “My body’s condition is not my reality—Spirit is.”
The Holy Spirit uses this lesson to shift your trust from the unstable to the unshakable.
II. Applied to Daily Life
Let’s bring this down into the situations you actually face.
1. Relationships
The ego’s laws in relationships:
- “I am safe only if you love me.”
- “I am worthy only if you approve of me.”
- “I am okay only if you don’t leave me or criticize me.”
When you believe these laws, you feel:
- clingy or controlling
- easily hurt and offended
- afraid of honesty
- constantly monitoring others’ moods
Under God’s laws:
- Your worth is established by God and cannot be increased or decreased.
- Love is what you are, not what you must get.
- No one can truly take anything real from you.
In practice, this might look like:
- You notice your partner is distant. The ego says, “I’m not lovable. I must fix this or I’ll be alone.”
- You pause and remember: *“I am under no laws but God’s. My safety is not in this person’s behavior. My worth is given by God.”*
- From this place, you can speak honestly, listen gently, and respond with less fear. You are no longer bargaining for your identity.
2. Work and Money
Ego’s laws:
- “The economy determines my security.”
- “My boss determines my value.”
- “My future depends on my performance.”
Under these laws, you live in:
- anxiety about the future
- fear of failure
- comparison and competition
Under God’s laws:
- Your true security is in God’s Love, not in changing numbers or circumstances.
- Your function is to extend love and forgiveness, not to prove your worth.
- Guidance is always available, and you are never alone in decisions.
In practice:
- You worry about losing your job.
- You remember: *“I am under no laws but God’s.”*
- You say inwardly: “Holy Spirit, show me how to see this differently. My safety is in You. Use this situation for my awakening.”
- From this trust, you may still update your résumé, look for new opportunities, or have needed conversations—but the panic softens. You are no longer worshiping the world’s laws as your god.
3. Illness and the Body
This is often the hardest area.
Ego’s laws:
- “The body is what I am.”
- “If the body is threatened, I am threatened.”
- “Pain proves I am vulnerable and alone.”
Under God’s laws:
- You are not a body; you are free.
- The body is a communication device, not your identity.
- Nothing can touch the holiness of your mind in God.
In practice:
- You feel pain or receive a diagnosis.
- The ego rushes in with fear stories: “This is the end. This proves you are weak. This proves you are not protected.”
- You pause and say: *“I am under no laws but God’s. My reality is Spirit. Holy Spirit, help me remember I am still as God created me.”*
- You may still see doctors, take medicine, and care for the body, but you no longer use the body’s condition as proof of your spiritual state. You let the situation become a classroom in trust, not a verdict of doom.
4. Anxiety and Daily Stress
Ego’s laws:
- “I must control everything to be safe.”
- “If I don’t anticipate every problem, something terrible will happen.”
- “My peace depends on circumstances.”
Under God’s laws:
- Your peace is already given.
- You are held in a Love that does not change.
- You are guided moment by moment; you do not need to figure out the entire future.
In practice:
- You feel overwhelmed by tasks or decisions.
- You pause: *“I am under no laws but God’s.”*
- You breathe and say: “Holy Spirit, I place this day under Your laws. Show me the next step. I don’t need to run my own universe.”
- Often, a sense of space opens. You do the next simple thing, rather than trying to solve your whole life at once.
III. Overcoming Resistance
This lesson can feel threatening because it challenges the foundation of how you think the world works.
Common Fears
1. *“If I’m under no laws but God’s, won’t I become irresponsible?”*
The Course never asks you to deny the world’s forms, only to deny their power over your mind. You still pay your bills, care for your body, and show up for others—but from peace, not fear. True responsibility is responding to the Holy Spirit, not to the ego’s panic.
2. *“If I don’t fear the world’s dangers, won’t I get hurt?”*
The ego equates fear with safety. But fear clouds guidance. When you trust God’s laws, you become more, not less, receptive to wise, loving guidance that protects and blesses everyone involved.
3. *“It feels like I’m being asked to let go of control.”*
You are. But notice: has your control ever truly brought you lasting peace? This lesson invites you to trade the heavy burden of self-management for the quiet trust that you are carried.
4. *“I don’t really believe I’m under no laws but God’s. I still feel ruled by money, time, health, and others’ opinions.”*
That’s okay. You are not asked to force belief. You are asked to practice willingness. Even a tiny opening—“Maybe there is another way to see this”—is enough for the Holy Spirit to begin working in your mind.
IV. Today’s Practice
Here is a gentle way to practice Lesson 76 today.
1. Morning Quiet Time (10–15 minutes)
1. Sit comfortably, close your eyes, and take a few slow breaths.
2. Say slowly, with as much sincerity as you can:
“I am under no laws but God’s.”
3. Let your mind bring up all the “laws” you believe in:
- “I must work hard to be worthy.”
- “I must be loved to be okay.”
- “I must not get sick.”
- “I must have enough money.”
4. For each one, gently respond:
“This is not a real law.
I am under no laws but God’s.”
5. Then rest in silence for a few minutes, letting the words sink in. You don’t need to “do” anything. Just allow the idea to be present in your mind.
2. Hourly Reminders
At the top of each hour (or as often as you remember), pause briefly and say:
“I am under no laws but God’s.”
If you can, add:
“Holy Spirit, show me where I am still believing in false laws.
Help me trust the Love that truly governs me.”
Even a 10–20 second pause is enough.
3. Using It in Stressful Moments
Whenever you feel:
- anxious
- angry
- guilty
- pressured
- afraid about money, health, or relationships
Stop and say inwardly:
“I am under no laws but God’s.
This situation does not define my safety or my worth.
Holy Spirit, how would You have me see this?”
Then wait a moment. You might feel a slight softening, a new thought, or simply a bit more space. That is enough. The shift from fear to even a little willingness is the miracle beginning.
4. Evening Reflection
Before sleep, gently review your day:
- Where did I feel most afraid or pressured?
- Which “laws” did I believe in then?
- Can I now, even looking back, say: *“I was still under no laws but God’s”*?
Offer the whole day to the Holy Spirit:
“I give You my beliefs in the world’s laws.
Correct my mind as I sleep.
Teach me that I am under no laws but God’s.”
V. Comparable ACIM Lessons
This lesson connects deeply with several others:
- **Lesson 50: “I am sustained by the Love of God.”**
Both lessons shift your sense of security from external forms to God’s Love as your true Source.
- **Lesson 70: “My salvation comes from me.”**
Reminds you that salvation is an inner change of mind, not something the world’s laws can give or take.
- **Lesson 72: “Holding grievances is an attack on God’s plan for salvation.”**
Grievances are the ego’s way of enforcing its laws of guilt and punishment. Letting them go opens you to God’s gentle laws.
- **Lesson 74: “There is no will but God’s.”**
If there is only one Will, then there can be only one real set of laws—God’s.
- **Lesson 91: “Miracles are seen in light.”**
As you loosen belief in the world’s laws, you begin to see miracles—shifts in perception—more clearly.
VI. Closing Thought
You do not have to fully understand or believe this lesson today. You are only asked to be willing to question the world’s fearful rules and to let a gentler Voice speak.
Each time you say, “I am under no laws but God’s,” you are opening a small window in a dark room. Light will come, not because you force it, but because it is already there.
You are not alone. You are not unprotected. You are not at the mercy of a hostile world.
You remain, now and always, under the laws of Love.
