LESSON 6

I am upset because I see something that is not there.

Reality is never frightening. It is impossible that it could upset me. Reality brings only perfect peace. When I am upset, it is always because I have replaced reality with illusions I made up. The illusions are upsetting because I have given them reality, and thus regard reality as an illusion. Nothing in God’s creation is affected in any way by this confusion of mine. I am always upset by nothing.

Lesson 6: “I am upset because I see something that is not there.”

The Core Teaching

Lesson 6 is very simple on the surface, yet it is quietly radical. It tells you that every form of upset—anger, fear, sadness, irritation, guilt, anxiety, disappointment—comes from seeing something that is not really there.

This does *not* mean you are “making up” the world in the sense that nothing appears to happen. You do see bodies, events, and situations. But the Course is saying:

  • You are **adding a meaning** to what you see that is not there in truth.
  • You are **projecting** your own hidden guilt, fear, and self‑judgment onto the world.
  • Then you react to your own projection as if it were outside you, attacking you.

The ego’s entire strategy is based on this:

1. Hide the guilt and fear in the mind.

2. Project it outward onto people, events, and the body.

3. Convince you that the cause of your pain is “out there,” so you never look within and question the ego itself.

Lesson 6 begins to expose this trick. It says, in essence:

“You think you are upset because of what your eyes see, but you are actually upset because of what your mind has put there.”

What is the ego trying to hide?

The ego is trying to hide one central lie:

“You have separated from God, and you are guilty and deserving of punishment.”

This belief is unbearable, so it must be covered over. The ego’s solution is to project that guilt outward. Instead of feeling, “I am guilty,” the mind says:

  • “They are guilty.”
  • “The world is dangerous.”
  • “My body is weak and vulnerable.”
  • “Life is unfair.”

Then the mind feels upset, but it believes the upset is caused by:

  • A rude comment
  • A diagnosis
  • A bank balance
  • A political situation
  • A memory of the past

The ego wants you to *never suspect* that the real source of your upset is an inner decision to believe in separation and guilt. If you never question that, the ego remains in charge.

What is the Holy Spirit revealing?

The Holy Spirit gently reveals a different picture:

1. *You have never truly separated from God.*

Your identity as Spirit is untouched, innocent, and whole.

2. *Your guilt is not real.*

It is a dream built on a false premise. You are not the ego’s story.

3. *Your upset is a signal, not a verdict.*

When you are upset, it is simply a sign that you are seeing through the ego’s lens, adding meanings that are not there in God’s reality.

4. *Perception can be healed.*

You do not have to make the world disappear. You only need to let your interpretation be corrected. The Holy Spirit re‑interprets everything in the light of love.

So Lesson 6 is not blaming you for being upset; it is *freeing you*. It says:

“If your upset comes from something you are adding, then you are not a helpless victim. You can choose again.”

Applied to Daily Life

Let’s bring this into very human situations.

1. Relationships

Suppose your partner doesn’t answer your text for hours. You feel hurt, anxious, maybe angry. The ego’s story:

  • “They don’t care about me.”
  • “I’m not important.”
  • “They’re probably doing something wrong.”

Lesson 6 invites you to pause:

“I am not upset because my partner hasn’t answered.
I am upset because I see something that is not there.”

What are you seeing that is not there?

You are seeing *abandonment, rejection, or betrayal*—old wounds, old beliefs about being unlovable. You are projecting them onto this moment.

The Holy Spirit would say:

“You are loved. This delay in response is neutral. Your pain comes from the meaning you have given it, not from the fact itself.”

This doesn’t mean you never communicate your needs. It means you do so from peace, not from a storm of projection.

2. Work and Career

Your boss criticizes your work. You feel crushed, angry, or defensive. The ego’s story:

  • “I’m not good enough.”
  • “They’re unfair.”
  • “My future is ruined.”

Lesson 6:

“I am not upset because of what my boss said.
I am upset because I see something that is not there.”

You are seeing *attack, condemnation*, and perhaps the “proof” of your unworthiness. But those meanings come from your own inner belief in inadequacy. The criticism triggers it, but doesn’t cause it.

The Holy Spirit might reinterpret it as:

“Here is a chance to see how much you’ve tied your worth to performance. Your value is given by God and cannot be changed by any opinion.”

From that perspective, you can respond calmly, take what is useful, and let the rest go.

3. Illness and the Body

You receive a troubling health report. Fear rises: “I’m doomed. I’m unsafe. My body is my self.”

Lesson 6:

“I am not upset because of this diagnosis.
I am upset because I see something that is not there.”

What are you seeing?

You are seeing *total vulnerability, abandonment by God, maybe punishment*. The ego uses illness to “prove” that you are a body and that you are at the mercy of the world.

The Holy Spirit gently reminds you:

“You are not a body. You are Spirit. The body can be cared for, treated, and supported, but it is not your Self. Your fear comes from believing the body is your identity.”

This doesn’t mean you ignore medical care. It means you let the fear be questioned, so you can move through the situation with more peace, trusting inner guidance.

4. Anxiety and Daily Stress

You look at your to‑do list and feel overwhelmed. The ego’s story:

  • “I can’t handle this.”
  • “Something bad will happen if I fail.”
  • “I’m alone in this.”

Lesson 6:

“I am not upset because of my schedule.
I am upset because I see something that is not there.”

You are seeing *threat, pressure, and future catastrophe*. But the list is just words on paper or on a screen. The stress comes from your interpretation: “I must control everything or I will be unsafe.”

The Holy Spirit whispers:

“You are carried. You are not alone. One step at a time is enough. Your worth is not measured by productivity.”

Overcoming Resistance

Why might this lesson feel difficult?

1. *It challenges the belief that the world is the cause of your feelings.*

The ego wants to say, “I’m upset because of them or that.” It feels safer to blame something outside than to look within.

2. *It can feel like self‑blame at first.*

You might hear, “So it’s all my fault?”

The Course is not saying you are to blame. It is saying you are *powerful*: your mind is not a victim. You are not guilty; you are simply mistaken in how you are seeing.

3. *Fear of losing your identity.*

Much of your sense of self is built around your grievances, your stories of what others did, and what life has done to you. To accept that your upset comes from within can feel like losing a familiar identity.

4. *Fear that if you stop blaming the world, you will be vulnerable.*

The ego insists, “If you don’t defend yourself with anger and judgment, you’ll be hurt.”

The Holy Spirit says, “Your true safety is in your innocence, not in your defenses.”

Be gentle with yourself. You are not asked to believe this fully right now. You are only asked to *try it out*, to be willing to consider:

“Maybe my upset is not caused by what I think. Maybe I am seeing something that is not really there.”

That tiny willingness opens the door for healing.

Today’s Practice

Lesson 6 practice is simple but powerful.

1. *Frequency*

  • Practice 3–5 times today (or more if you feel guided).
  • Keep each practice short—about a minute.

2. *Step 1: Notice an upset*

Any upset qualifies: irritation, worry, sadness, anger, disappointment, fear. It doesn’t have to be intense.

3. *Step 2: Name it specifically*

Identify the situation and the emotion. For example:

  • “I am angry at my coworker because he ignored my email.”
  • “I am anxious about my finances.”
  • “I am sad about my relationship.”

4. *Step 3: Apply the idea*

Say slowly, either silently or out loud:

  • “I am not angry at my coworker for the reason I think.

I am upset because I see something that is not there.”

Or more directly:

  • “I am upset because I see something that is not there.”

You can also combine it with the specific situation:

  • “I am upset about my coworker because I see something that is not there.”
  • “I am upset about my finances because I see something that is not there.”

5. *Step 4: Let it sink in*

Sit for a few moments and let the words rest in your mind. You do not need to force belief. Just let the idea be present, like a gentle light in the room.

6. *Step 5: No analysis, no fixing*

You are not asked to figure out what is there instead. You are only loosening your certainty that your current interpretation is true. That loosening is enough for now.

If you forget during the day, that’s okay. Each time you remember is perfect. Each application is like a tiny crack in the ego’s armor.

Comparable ACIM Lessons

Lesson 6 is closely connected with several other early lessons:

  • **Lesson 5: “I am never upset for the reason I think.”**

Lesson 5 opens the door: your upset is not what you think it is. Lesson 6 goes further: your upset is because you are seeing something that is not really there.

  • **Lesson 7: “I see only the past.”**

If you are seeing what is not there, what are you seeing? You are seeing the past—old beliefs, old wounds, old meanings—projected onto the present.

  • **Lesson 12: “I am upset because I see a meaningless world.”**

Lesson 12 deepens the idea that your upset comes from your attempt to give the world a meaning it does not truly have.

  • **Lesson 21: “I am determined to see things differently.”**

After recognizing that your perception is distorted, Lesson 21 expresses your willingness to let it be changed.

All of these lessons work together to shift the cause of your experience from “out there” to “in here,” where it can be healed.

Closing Thought

Each time you remember today, “I am upset because I see something that is not there,” you are taking a gentle step back from the ego’s story and moving closer to the quiet truth of your innocence.

You do not have to fix yourself or the world. You are only learning to see that your pain does not come from reality, but from a mistaken way of seeing. And what is mistaken can be corrected.

Let this be a soft day of questioning, not of strain. You are not alone in this. The Holy Spirit walks with you, patiently undoing every fearful image, until only love remains.
