*ACIM Lesson 37: “My holiness blesses the world.”*
The Core Teaching
Lesson 37 makes a very bold and tender claim: *your holiness blesses the world.*
Not your personality.
Not your achievements.
Not your niceness or your spiritual “progress.”
Your *holiness*—the light of God that is your true Self—blesses the world simply by being what it is.
What does “holiness” mean here?
In A Course in Miracles, holiness does not mean moral purity or religious piety. It means:
- You are as God created you.
- You share God’s innocence, love, and wholeness.
- Nothing real can be added to you and nothing real can be taken away.
Holiness is your *unchanged, unhurt, eternal Self* behind every story, every mistake, every wound, and every mask.
The Course is not asking you to become holy. It is asking you to *remember that you are* holy, and to let that remembrance shine into your perception of the world.
What is the ego trying to hide?
The ego’s survival depends on you not recognizing your holiness. If you knew you were holy, the ego’s entire thought system of guilt, fear, and separation would collapse.
So the ego tries to hide your holiness by:
1. *Convincing you that you are guilty.*
It whispers: “You’ve done too much wrong. You’re not worthy. You’re broken.”
If you believe you are guilty, you will not believe you are holy.
2. *Projecting guilt onto others.*
It tells you: “They are the problem. They are to blame. They hurt you.”
If you see others as guilty, you cannot see them as holy, and you will not recognize your shared innocence.
3. *Making the body and the world seem more real than the mind.*
It says: “You are this body. You are your history, your trauma, your limitations.”
If you think you are only a body, you will not look for holiness in the mind.
4. *Equating holiness with specialness.*
It suggests: “If you are holy, you must be better than others.”
Then you feel arrogant or afraid to claim holiness, because it seems like spiritual superiority instead of shared innocence.
The ego’s main strategy is to keep your attention on *form—behavior, appearances, differences—so you won’t notice the content* of love that is always present beneath the surface.
What is the Holy Spirit revealing?
The Holy Spirit gently undoes all of this by revealing:
1. *Your holiness is not personal; it is universal.*
You are holy because you share God’s Being with everyone.
Your holiness is not “yours” alone; it is the same light in all minds.
2. *Your holiness is untouched by your mistakes.*
Behavior can be mistaken; your Self cannot.
The Holy Spirit looks past every error to the changeless innocence beneath it.
3. *Your holiness is the answer to every problem you think you see.*
The world you see is a reflection of your thoughts.
When you accept your holiness, your perception of the world is softened, healed, and blessed.
4. *Your holiness blesses because it sees truly.*
To bless is to *see with love*.
When you remember your holiness, you naturally look upon others with gentleness, understanding, and forgiveness. This is the blessing.
So this lesson is not about forcing yourself to “be good.” It is about *allowing the truth of what you are to come into awareness*, and letting that truth radiate through your perception.
Applied to Daily Life
Let’s bring this into real situations.
1. Relationships
Suppose you’re in a tense relationship—romantic, family, or friendship. There’s resentment, old hurts, and defensiveness.
The ego’s story:
“They hurt me. I must protect myself. I must prove I am right.”
The Holy Spirit’s reminder through this lesson:
*“My holiness blesses this relationship.”*
What does that mean practically?
- You pause before reacting.
- You remember: “Underneath our roles and wounds, we are both holy.”
- You silently bless them: “Your holiness is real, even if neither of us is acting from it right now.”
- You allow a little more patience, a softer tone, a willingness to listen.
You don’t have to fix the whole relationship. You just let your *perception* be touched by the awareness of holiness—yours and theirs. That shift in perception is the blessing.
2. Work and Career
At work, you may feel stressed, competitive, undervalued, or afraid of failure.
The ego’s story:
“You are what you achieve. You must prove your worth. Others are obstacles or rivals.”
The lesson says:
*“My holiness blesses the world”—including my workplace.*
Applied:
- Before a meeting, you take a moment: “My holiness blesses this room, these people, this conversation.”
- You remember that everyone there is more than their role, their title, or their behavior.
- You allow yourself to be guided toward honesty, kindness, and clarity instead of fear-driven performance.
You may notice subtle changes: less anxiety, more cooperation, a sense that you are not alone. Your holiness blesses the world by *changing how you see it*, which changes how you show up.
3. Illness and the Body
When you or someone you love is ill, fear and grief can feel overwhelming.
The ego’s story:
“The body is all you are. Illness proves you are weak, vulnerable, and at the mercy of the world.”
The Holy Spirit uses this lesson to say:
*“Your holiness is not touched by illness.”*
This does not mean you deny the body’s condition or pretend you feel fine. It means:
- You remember that your true Self is not a body and cannot be sick.
- You look at the illness with compassion, not as punishment or failure.
- You bless your body: “My holiness blesses this body. It is a communication device for love, not my identity.”
You might extend the same blessing to others who are ill:
“Your holiness is intact. You are not what this condition says you are.”
This brings peace, which itself is healing in the deepest sense.
4. Anxiety and Daily Stress
When anxiety rises—about money, relationships, the future—the ego says:
“You are alone. You are in danger. You must control everything.”
The lesson offers a different voice:
*“My holiness blesses the world.”*
In the middle of anxiety, you can gently say:
- “If I am truly holy, then I am not alone in this.”
- “If I am holy, then love is with me now.”
- “If I am holy, then I can look at this fear with a calm, higher part of my mind.”
You don’t have to feel holy to practice this. You just have to be willing to consider that something in you is larger than the fear. That willingness opens the door for the Holy Spirit to comfort and guide you.
Overcoming Resistance
This lesson can feel uncomfortable or even triggering. You might think:
- “I don’t feel holy.”
- “If you knew what I’ve done, you wouldn’t say that.”
- “This sounds arrogant or delusional.”
- “If I’m holy, why is my life such a mess?”
These reactions are normal. They are simply the ego defending its identity.
Why might this lesson be difficult?
1. *We confuse holiness with perfection of behavior.*
The mind says, “I still get angry, jealous, fearful—how can I be holy?”
The Course says: Your holiness is what you are, not how you behave. Behavior is a reflection of what you believe about yourself, and it can change. Your Self does not.
2. *We fear losing our familiar identity.*
Even if our self-image is painful, it is familiar.
To accept holiness is to loosen your grip on the story of “the guilty me,” “the victim me,” or “the unworthy me.” The ego feels threatened by this.
3. *We fear responsibility.*
If my holiness blesses the world, then my mind is powerful.
The ego is afraid of that power, because it means we are not helpless. It means we are co-creators of our experience through our perception.
Gently addressing doubts and fear
If you feel resistance, you don’t have to fight it. You can simply say:
- “I don’t fully believe I am holy yet, but I am willing to be shown.”
- “I’m afraid of this idea, but I will let the Holy Spirit reinterpret it for me.”
- “I feel unworthy, but I will practice anyway, just for a moment.”
The Course never asks you to force belief. It asks for *willingness*. Even a small willingness is enough for the Holy Spirit to begin the healing.
Today’s Practice (Lesson 37)
Here is a simple way to practice this lesson today, in line with the Course’s instructions and spirit.
1. Longer practice period (once or twice)
- Sit quietly, close your eyes if comfortable.
- Take a few gentle breaths and relax your body.
- Say slowly, with as much openness as you can:
*“My holiness blesses the world.”*
- Let the words sink in. Don’t argue with them; just let them be there.
Now, for a few minutes:
- Let your mind bring up different people, places, or situations.
- After each one appears in your mind, say quietly:
- “My holiness blesses [this person].”
- “My holiness blesses [this situation].”
- “My holiness blesses the world through my seeing it with love.”
If resistance arises—“No, not that person!”—just notice it and gently include it:
- “My holiness blesses even this resistance.”
- “My holiness blesses the part of me that is afraid.”
End with:
*“My holiness blesses the world because I am as God created me.”*
Sit a moment in stillness, then go about your day.
2. Short practice periods (frequently)
Several times an hour, or whenever you remember, pause for a few seconds and say silently:
- “My holiness blesses the world.”
- Or: “My holiness blesses this moment.”
- Or: “My holiness blesses this person I am with now.”
You don’t need to feel anything special. You are simply training your mind to remember a different identity.
Comparable ACIM Lessons
This lesson is closely connected to several others:
- **Lesson 35: “My mind is part of God’s. I am very holy.”**
Establishes the basis: your mind shares God’s holiness. Lesson 37 extends this by showing that your holiness is not just a fact—it has *effects* on how you see the world.
- **Lesson 36: “My holiness envelops everything I see.”**
Here, holiness is like a gentle light surrounding everything. Lesson 37 moves from enveloping to blessing: your holiness not only surrounds but also *heals* your perception.
- **Lesson 38: “There is nothing my holiness cannot do.”**
This follows directly, showing the power of holiness to undo illusions of limitation. Lesson 37 is the bridge: once you accept that your holiness blesses the world, you begin to realize its limitless healing capacity.
All these lessons work together to loosen your identification with guilt and separation, and to establish a new identity in your awareness: *the holy Son of God, innocent and powerful in love.*
Closing Thought
You do not have to make yourself holy today. You only need to *allow the idea* that you already are, and let that idea gently touch your perception of the world.
Even if you feel small, tired, or doubtful, your true Self is quietly shining.
Let this lesson be a soft whisper in your heart:
*“My holiness blesses the world, because I am as God created me.”*
Let that be enough for today.
