Lesson 339 – “I will receive whatever I request.”

This lesson goes straight to the heart of responsibility. It tells us, in a very gentle but uncompromising way, that nothing happens to us without our consent at the level of mind. Not the conscious, everyday mind that seems confused and scared, but the deeper decision-making mind that chooses between the ego and the Holy Spirit.

It can sound harsh at first: “I will receive whatever I request.” But in the Course’s metaphysics, this is not about blame; it is about power. It is the Holy Spirit’s way of saying:

You are not a victim.
You are not at the mercy of a cruel world.
You are the beloved Son of God, and your mind is creative.

Everything you experience is the effect of a choice in your mind: to listen to the ego, or to listen to the Holy Spirit.

The Core Teaching

What does “request” really mean?

In ACIM, to “request” is not mainly about words or conscious wishes. It is about what you value and therefore choose in your mind.

  • If you value separation, attack, specialness, and guilt, you are “requesting” the ego’s world of fear.
  • If you value forgiveness, joining, innocence, and peace, you are “requesting” the Holy Spirit’s world of true perception.

So, “I will receive whatever I request” really means:

I will experience the consequences of the teacher I choose in my mind.

The ego offers a world of loss, conflict, and death, and then hides the fact that we chose that teacher. The Holy Spirit offers a world of peace, shared interests, and safety in God, and gently reminds us that we can choose again.

What is the ego trying to hide?

The ego is desperate to hide one thing:

*Your mind is the cause; the world is the effect.*

The ego wants you to believe:

  • The world is the cause.
  • You are the effect.
  • You are small, powerless, and at the mercy of forces outside you.

Why? Because if you ever truly recognized that your mind is the cause, you would realize:

  • You are not a victim.
  • You can choose a different teacher.
  • The ego has no power at all.

So the ego invents stories like:

  • “I didn’t ask for this.”
  • “Life just does this to me.”
  • “Other people are the problem.”
  • “My past made me this way.”

All of these are defenses against the central ACIM teaching:

*You are doing this to yourself, and you can stop.*

Not as a body in a world, but as a mind choosing between two thought systems.

What is the Holy Spirit revealing?

The Holy Spirit reveals the same idea, but with total gentleness and love:

1. *You are the decision-maker.*

You are not the ego. You are the mind that can choose for the ego or for God.

2. *You have never lost your power.*

Even in your darkest moments, your mind is still free to choose again.

3. *Every experience is an opportunity.*

Not to suffer, but to see what you have been asking for and to choose differently.

4. *You can ask for only two things.*

  • The ego’s gifts: guilt, fear, specialness, attack, and ultimately death.
  • The Holy Spirit’s gifts: peace, joy, innocence, unity, and life.

The Holy Spirit uses this lesson to say:

Look gently at what you are experiencing.
This shows you what you have been asking for.
If you do not like the result, choose again.
Ask Me instead.

Applied to Daily Life

Let’s bring this down to the level of everyday situations.

1. Relationships

Suppose you feel hurt because your partner, friend, or family member is “not giving you what you need.” The ego says:

  • “They are the problem.”
  • “They should change.”
  • “I am justified in my anger.”

Underneath this, the mind is “requesting”:

  • Specialness: “I want them to prove I am special, more important than others.”
  • Validation: “I want them to fix my sense of lack.”
  • Guilt: “I want someone to blame so I don’t have to face my own choice for separation.”

The experience you receive is:

  • Disappointment
  • Resentment
  • Conflict

The Holy Spirit invites a different request:

  • “Help me see this person as innocent.”
  • “Let me remember that my worth is given by God, not by them.”
  • “Let this relationship be used for healing, not for attack.”

Then what you receive is:

  • A softer heart
  • More honest communication
  • A sense of shared purpose instead of competition

The outer form may or may not change immediately, but your experience changes because you have requested peace instead of specialness.

2. Work and career

You might feel trapped in a job, underappreciated, or anxious about success. The ego’s request is:

  • “I want the world to give me identity and security.”
  • “I want to prove my worth through achievements.”
  • “I want to compare and be better than others.”

You receive:

  • Stress
  • Competition
  • Fear of failure

The Holy Spirit’s alternative request:

  • “Let my work be a classroom for forgiveness.”
  • “Use this job to teach me that my worth is not in what I do.”
  • “Show me how to bless everyone I meet here.”

You receive:

  • A sense of purpose beyond the paycheck
  • More kindness and less defensiveness
  • Guidance about when to stay, when to leave, and how to move

3. Illness and the body

Illness is one of the hardest places to accept this idea. The ego says:

  • “The body is the cause.”
  • “Genes, accidents, age—these are to blame.”
  • “You are a victim of biology.”

At the deeper level of mind, the ego’s request is:

  • “Prove I am a body, separate and vulnerable.”
  • “Give me evidence that I can be hurt.”
  • “Let me use sickness to justify special care, or to prove others wrong, or to punish myself.”

This is not conscious and not to be judged. It is simply the ego’s use of the body.

The Holy Spirit never blames you for illness. Instead, He says:

  • “Let this be used for healing of the mind.”
  • “Let this show you that you are not the body.”
  • “Let Me reinterpret this so it becomes a doorway to peace.”

Then you can request:

  • “Help me see that my true Self is untouched by this.”
  • “Use this situation to deepen my trust in You.”
  • “Let me release guilt and fear around the body.”

You may still take medicine, see doctors, and care for the body. But you are asking for a different inner experience: peace instead of fear, trust instead of despair.

4. Anxiety and daily stress

When you feel anxious about money, time, family, or the future, the ego’s request is:

  • “Let me be in charge.”
  • “Let me control outcomes.”
  • “Let me keep my separate identity and try to survive alone.”

You receive:

  • Tension
  • Overthinking
  • Sleepless nights

The Holy Spirit invites:

  • “Let Me lead.”
  • “Ask for peace instead of control.”
  • “Let the future rest in God.”

You request:

  • “I choose to trust instead of worry.”
  • “Help me see that nothing real can be threatened.”
  • “Show me the next gentle step, and I will take it.”

You receive:

  • A calmer mind
  • Simple, practical guidance
  • A sense of being carried, rather than pushing alone

Overcoming Resistance

This lesson can feel threatening. Common reactions are:

  • “So I asked for abuse? For trauma? For loss?”
  • “This sounds like blaming the victim.”
  • “I would never consciously choose this.”

The Course is not talking about your conscious personality. It is talking about a split mind that chose separation from God and then made a world to hide from that guilt.

The Holy Spirit’s message is not:

  • “You are guilty for what you experience.”

It is:

  • “You are powerful and mistaken, not guilty.”
  • “You used your power to dream of suffering.”
  • “You can now use that same power to awaken.”

It is completely okay to feel resistance, anger, or confusion. You can bring that honestly to the Holy Spirit:

  • “I don’t understand how I could have asked for this.”
  • “I feel angry at this idea.”
  • “Help me see this in a way that does not hurt.”

The Holy Spirit never shames you. He gently loosens your identification with the victim role and restores your identity as the decision-maker who can choose again.

Today’s Practice

Here is a simple way to practice Lesson 339 throughout the day.

1. Morning quiet time (5–15 minutes)

Sit comfortably, close your eyes if you like, and say slowly:

“I will receive whatever I request.
Holy Spirit, show me what I have been asking for.
Help me choose again.”

Then:

  • Notice any area of your life that feels painful or stuck.
  • Say inwardly: “In this situation, I have been requesting the ego’s interpretation. I am willing to ask for peace instead.”

Rest in silence a few minutes, simply being willing to change your request.

2. Short practice during the day

Whenever you feel upset, stressed, or hurt, pause and say:

1. “I am not a victim of this situation.”

2. “I am receiving what I have been requesting in my mind.”

3. “I now choose to request peace instead of this.”

You might add:

“Holy Spirit, reinterpret this for me.
Show me what this is for.”

Even a 10–20 second pause can shift the inner request.

3. Evening reflection

Before sleep, gently review your day:

  • Where did I feel like a victim?
  • Where did I choose attack, judgment, or fear?
  • Where did I remember to ask for peace?

Then say:

“Whatever I requested today, I now place in Your hands, Holy Spirit.
Correct my mind as I sleep.
I want to ask only for what leads me home.”

Comparable ACIM Lessons

Several lessons echo the same theme:

  • **Lesson 152 – “The power of decision is my own.”**

Emphasizes that your mind is always choosing, and that this choice is the source of your experience.

  • **Lesson 31 – “I am not the victim of the world I see.”**

Begins to undo the belief that the world is doing things to you.

  • **Lesson 32 – “I have invented the world I see.”**

Deepens the idea that the world is a projection of the mind’s choice for separation.

  • **Lesson 61 – “I am the light of the world.”**

Reminds you of your true identity and your function as a bringer of peace, not a sufferer.

  • **Lesson 71 – “Only God’s plan for salvation will work.”**

Contrasts the ego’s plans (to fix the world) with God’s plan (to heal the mind).

  • **Lesson 185 – “I want the peace of God.”**

Asks you to become honest about what you truly want, which is the same as what you truly request.

Lesson 339 gathers these threads into a simple law:

*You always receive the effects of the teacher you choose.*

Closing Thought

You are not being judged by this lesson; you are being freed.

Each moment, you can say:

“I have been asking for fear, but now I choose peace.
I have been asking for guilt, but now I choose innocence.
I have been asking for separation, but now I choose to remember I am one with God.”

And the Holy Spirit will answer every sincere request, without exception.
