Lesson 329 – “I have already chosen what You will.”
Lesson 329 is a quiet, powerful reminder that your deepest will and God’s Will are not in conflict. It tells you that, beneath all the confusion and fear, you have already chosen the Will of God—because your true will and His are the same. The “choice” that still seems to torment you is only the ego’s dream of separation, replayed again and again in your mind.
This lesson is like a gentle hand on your heart, saying:
“You are not really torn. You are not really divided. You are only dreaming that you are.”
Let’s walk through what this means and how to live it today.
I. The Core Teaching
1. What does “I have already chosen what You will” mean?
In the world, choice seems to be about alternatives: this or that, yes or no, love or fear. But in the Course’s metaphysics, there is really only one true choice:
- To remember God, or
- To keep dreaming of separation.
The lesson says that at the level of your true Self—your Christ Self—you have already chosen God. You have never truly left Him. The separation never actually happened. You remain as God created you.
So why do you feel conflicted? Because the ego is a story-teller. It tells a story in which:
- You are separate.
- You are guilty.
- You are on your own.
- You must defend yourself.
- You must decide everything alone.
This story is what you call “my life,” but the Course gently says: this is not your Life; this is your dream.
Lesson 329 reminds you that under this dream-self is a Self that has never changed Its mind about God. That Self has already chosen Love. When you say, “I have already chosen what You will,” you are aligning with that deeper Self and letting its choice come into your awareness.
2. What is the ego trying to hide?
The ego is trying to hide the fact that:
- You are innocent.
- You are safe.
- You are loved.
- You are not separate from God or from anyone.
Why hide this? Because if you truly accepted your innocence and unity with God, the ego would dissolve. There would be no more guilt to maintain, no more fear to feed on, no more conflict to keep you distracted.
So the ego hides the truth by:
- Making you feel you must decide everything alone.
- Telling you that God’s Will is *different* from yours and will cost you something.
- Convincing you that surrendering to God means losing your individuality, your pleasures, your freedom.
Underneath all of this is one core lie:
“God’s Will is dangerous. You cannot trust it.”
Lesson 329 exposes this lie. It says: “Not only can I trust God’s Will—I have already chosen it, because it is my own.”
3. What is the Holy Spirit revealing?
The Holy Spirit reveals:
- God’s Will is perfect happiness for you.
- You and God share the same Will.
- You have never truly chosen against God; you only *dreamed* that you did.
- Every moment of sincere willingness lets the memory of your true choice return.
The Holy Spirit is the Voice that gently reminds you:
“You are not guilty for dreaming. You are not trapped.
The choice for Love has already been made in you.
You are only remembering.”
So the lesson is not asking you to force a new choice. It is inviting you to remember the choice that is already true of you.
II. Applied to Daily Life
Let’s bring this down into the situations that seem to matter most: relationships, work, illness, anxiety, and daily stress.
1. Relationships
Suppose you’re in a conflict with a partner, friend, or family member. The ego says:
- “I must protect myself.”
- “I must be right.”
- “If I forgive, I’ll be hurt again.”
In that moment, “I have already chosen what You will” means:
- At the deepest level, I want peace more than I want to be right.
- I want to remember our shared innocence, even if my ego is screaming.
- I want to see this person as the Holy Spirit sees them.
A practical way to apply this:
- Pause when you feel triggered.
- Silently say: “Holy Spirit, I have already chosen what You will. Help me remember.”
- Ask: “What would it look like to respond from the choice for Love that I’ve already made?”
You might be guided to speak gently, to say nothing, to apologize, or simply to drop the inner attack. The outer form will vary, but the content is always the same: a movement toward peace and joining.
2. Work and decisions
At work, you may feel pressure: decisions to make, people to please, deadlines to meet. The ego says:
- “It’s all on me.”
- “If I don’t control everything, something bad will happen.”
With this lesson, you can say:
- “I have already chosen to trust God’s plan instead of my fear.”
- “I do not know my own best interests, but the Holy Spirit does.”
- “My real job is to be willing to listen.”
You can bring this into specific decisions:
- “Holy Spirit, I have already chosen what You will. Show me the loving, peaceful choice here.”
- “Let my decisions reflect the choice for Love that is already true in me.”
You may find that you feel more relaxed, less driven, and more open to creative solutions. The pressure begins to lift because you are not pretending to be alone.
3. Illness and pain
When the body is sick or in pain, the ego uses it to “prove” that you are vulnerable and abandoned. It says:
- “See? You are a body. You are weak. You are at the mercy of the world.”
Lesson 329 does not ask you to deny your experience. It invites you to reinterpret it:
- “Even in this, I have already chosen God’s Will, which is healing of the mind.”
- “My true Self is not sick. I am still as God created me.”
- “Holy Spirit, help me use this situation to remember the choice for Love.”
You still may take medicine, see doctors, rest, and care for the body. The difference is that you are not using illness to prove separation. You use it as a classroom for remembering your true choice: to be one with God and at peace.
4. Anxiety and daily stress
Anxiety often comes from believing:
- “I am responsible for everything.”
- “I must control the future.”
- “I am not safe.”
Into that, this lesson whispers:
- “You have already chosen safety, because you have chosen God.”
- “You have already chosen peace, because you have chosen your true Self.”
- “You do not have to figure everything out. You only have to be willing.”
In a moment of anxiety, you might say:
“I have already chosen what You will.
Let me feel that choice now.
I hand You this fear.
Decide for me.”
Anxiety begins to loosen when you realize you are not making this journey alone or from scratch. The decision for Love is already in you, like a seed. You are simply watering it.
III. Overcoming Resistance
Why might this lesson be difficult?
1. *Fear of losing control*
The ego believes that if you truly accept God’s Will, you will lose what you think you want: special relationships, certain pleasures, certain identities. It equates surrender with sacrifice.
The Course gently corrects this: what you lose is only what hurts you. What you keep and gain is joy.
2. *Fear of being wrong about everything*
To say, “I have already chosen what You will” is to admit that your ego’s version of your life may not be the truth. This can feel destabilizing. You may think, “If I’ve been wrong, what can I trust?”
The answer: you can trust the Love in you that never changed. You can trust the quiet, gentle sense of peace that comes when you stop arguing with God.
3. *Attachment to guilt*
Guilt can feel familiar, even “necessary.” Part of you may believe that you should suffer, that you deserve punishment. This lesson says: “No, you do not. You have already chosen innocence.”
That can be hard to accept. It may feel too generous, too kind. But that is exactly what God is.
If you feel resistance, do not fight it. Just notice it with kindness:
- “Part of me is afraid of trusting God.”
- “Part of me still believes I must suffer.”
- “Holy Spirit, I bring this fear to You. I do not judge it. I just ask for help.”
Your willingness, however small, is enough. You are not asked to be perfect—only honest and willing.
IV. Today’s Practice
Here is a simple way to practice Lesson 329 today.
1. Morning quiet time (5–15 minutes)
1. Sit comfortably, close your eyes, and take a few slow breaths.
2. Gently say to yourself, several times:
“I have already chosen what You will.
I am one with Your Will, Father.
Your Will is my happiness.”
3. Let the words sink in. You don’t have to feel it perfectly; just be willing.
4. If thoughts arise like, “But I don’t feel that,” or “I’m afraid,” simply notice them and say:
“Holy Spirit, I give You these doubts.
Let me remember the choice for Love that is already in me.”
5. Sit in quiet for a few minutes, letting the mind rest. If it wanders, gently bring it back to:
“I have already chosen what You will.”
2. During the day
Use short, frequent reminders, especially when you feel upset, stressed, or confused:
- “I have already chosen what You will. Let me remember.”
- “Decide for me, Holy Spirit.”
- “Your Will and mine are one.”
Before important conversations, tasks, or decisions, pause and say:
“I have already chosen what You will.
Show me how to reflect that choice now.”
3. Evening reflection
Before sleep, take a few minutes to review your day:
1. Notice moments when you felt fear, anger, or stress.
2. Without judgment, say:
“In that moment, I forgot my true choice.
But I have already chosen what You will.
I accept Your correction now.”
3. End with gratitude:
“Thank You that my true choice for Love is safe in me,
untouched by my mistakes.”
V. Comparable ACIM Lessons
Several lessons are closely related to Lesson 329:
- **Lesson 74: “There is no will but God’s.”**
This establishes that only God’s Will is real. Lesson 329 adds: you have already chosen that Will.
- **Lesson 101: “God’s Will for me is perfect happiness.”**
This corrects the fear that God’s Will is harsh. Lesson 329 builds on this by affirming that you have already accepted that happiness at a deeper level.
- **Lesson 152: “The power of decision is my own.”**
This emphasizes your decision-making power. Lesson 329 says that your real decision has already been made in favor of God.
- **Lesson 285: “My holiness shines bright and clear today.”**
This points to your unchanged holiness. Lesson 329 says that this holy Self has already chosen with God.
- **Lesson 317: “I follow in the way appointed me.”**
This speaks of trusting God’s plan. Lesson 329 affirms that, in truth, you have already said “yes” to that plan.
VI. Closing Thought
You are not standing at a crossroads, terrified of choosing wrong. At the deepest level of your being, the choice has already been made. You have chosen God. You have chosen Love. You have chosen peace.
Today is not about forcing a new decision. It is about relaxing into the one that is already true of you.
Let this be your quiet reassurance:
“I have already chosen what You will.
I am safe in that choice.
I am learning to remember.”
