*ACIM Lesson 296*

"The Holy Spirit speaks through me today."

The Core Teaching

This lesson invites a very simple but radical shift in identity:

  • The ego says: *“I am a separate self, with private thoughts, private interests, and a private voice.”*
  • The Holy Spirit says: *“You are a communication of Love. Your real ‘voice’ is not the ego’s commentary, but the quiet extension of God’s Love to everyone you meet.”*

When the lesson says, “The Holy Spirit speaks through me today,” it is not saying you will suddenly hear a booming voice or deliver grand prophecies. It is pointing to something much gentler and more intimate: the idea that your true function is to let Love think through you, speak through you, and look through your eyes.

What is the ego trying to hide?

The ego is terrified of this idea because if you are a channel for Love, then:

  • You are not your grievances.
  • You are not your defenses.
  • You are not your specialness or your guilt.
  • You are not the “separate self” trying to survive in a dangerous world.

The ego wants you to believe:

1. *Your thoughts are private and separate.*

If your mind is a shared mind, then separation is an illusion. The ego must hide this.

2. *You are the author of yourself.*

If the Holy Spirit speaks through you, then you are not the ego’s “self-made” identity. You are something given, created, loved, and held by God.

3. *Love is weak and impractical.*

The ego insists that kindness, forgiveness, and gentleness will get you hurt. It says, “You must protect yourself. Don’t let Love run the show.” It hides the fact that Love is your true safety.

4. *You are guilty and unworthy.*

If the Holy Spirit can speak through you, you must be worthy of being a channel for God’s Love. The ego cannot tolerate this. It needs you to feel flawed, so you will keep seeking outside yourself for worth.

What is the Holy Spirit revealing?

The Holy Spirit reveals:

1. *Your mind is not alone.*

You are joined with every mind. Every loving thought you accept blesses the whole Sonship. You are never thinking only for yourself.

2. *You are an instrument of peace.*

Your role is not to fix the world by force, but to allow a different Teacher to use your words, your silence, your presence.

3. *You are innocent.*

If the Holy Spirit speaks through you, then God trusts you. Your supposed sins and failures are not your reality; they are dreams. Your true Self remains untouched.

4. *Your purpose is to extend Love.*

You are not here to defend a fragile self, but to remember and extend the Love that created you. Every interaction becomes an opportunity to let Love speak instead of fear.

Applied to Daily Life

Let’s look at how this might show up in ordinary situations.

1. Relationships

*Scenario:* You’re in a conflict with a partner, friend, or family member. You feel misunderstood and want to defend yourself.

  • Ego’s script: “I must win. I must prove I’m right. I must protect my image.”
  • Holy Spirit’s whisper: “Let Me speak through you. Let your words carry honesty and kindness, not attack.”

You might say less and listen more. You might pause before responding, and silently ask, “Holy Spirit, what would You have me say?”

You may be guided to say something simple like, “I’m willing to understand how you feel,” or even, “I’m scared too.”

The content of the words is less important than the *inner teacher* you choose. When you let the Holy Spirit speak through you, the tone softens, the attack energy drops, and the possibility of healing opens.

2. Work and Career

*Scenario:* You’re stressed about a deadline, a difficult coworker, or fear of failure.

  • Ego’s script: “You’re on your own. You must control everything. You must impress everyone.”
  • Holy Spirit’s whisper: “Let Me use this situation. Let Me guide your words, your emails, your meetings.”

Before a meeting or a call, you might pause and say,

“Holy Spirit, speak through me today. Let my words be helpful, not fearful. Let me remember we are all on the same side in truth.”

You may find yourself less reactive, more creative, more patient. The Holy Spirit does not necessarily change the outer form immediately, but it changes your *inner posture* from fear to trust. That shift alone can transform how events unfold.

3. Illness and Physical Symptoms

*Scenario:* You’re dealing with pain, chronic illness, or fear about your body.

  • Ego’s script: “You are your body. You are weak, vulnerable, and at the mercy of the world.”
  • Holy Spirit’s whisper: “You are not a body. You are free. Even here, in this experience, I can speak through you.”

You might let the Holy Spirit speak through you in the way you talk to your own body:

Instead of, “My body is betraying me,” you might be guided to think, “I am willing to see this differently. I am still as God created me.”

You might find yourself more gentle with others who are suffering, offering quiet comfort without pity. Your presence becomes a reminder that there is something in us untouched by sickness.

4. Anxiety and Daily Stress

*Scenario:* You feel anxious about money, the future, your children, or the state of the world.

  • Ego’s script: “Panic. Worry. Rehearse worst-case scenarios. You are alone.”
  • Holy Spirit’s whisper: “Let Me reinterpret this. Let Me speak through your mind to calm you and others.”

You might silently say,

“Holy Spirit, speak to me and through me. Let my thoughts be used for peace, not for fear.”

You may be guided to reassure someone else, to offer a kind word, or simply to breathe and stop feeding the fear story. Your willingness to let the Holy Spirit speak through you interrupts the ego’s cycle of anxiety.

Overcoming Resistance

This lesson can feel threatening to the ego for several reasons:

1. *Fear of losing control.*

“If I let the Holy Spirit speak through me, will I be taken advantage of? Will I say something foolish?”

The Course assures you that the Holy Spirit is gentle. He never forces, never embarrasses, never shames. He uses what you already are and know, but without fear.

2. *Doubt about worthiness.*

“Who am I to be a channel for the Holy Spirit?”

The truth is: you are exactly who God created for that purpose. Your worthiness is not earned; it is given. The Holy Spirit does not wait for you to be “perfect” before speaking through you. Your willingness is enough.

3. *Attachment to specialness.*

The ego likes to be the author of its own words and identity. It wants to say, “These are my ideas, my brilliance, my personality.”

Letting the Holy Spirit speak through you feels like stepping back from personal ownership. That can be unsettling, but it is deeply freeing. You discover that what is truly valuable in you was never “yours” alone; it was always shared.

4. *Fear of change.*

If you really let Love speak through you, some relationships may shift, some patterns may fall away. The ego fears this loss.

The Holy Spirit, however, only removes what hurts you and strengthens what truly blesses you.

If you notice resistance, simply acknowledge it without judgment:

“I’m afraid to let go. But I’m willing to be willing.”

That tiny opening is all the Holy Spirit needs.

Today’s Practice

Here is a gentle way to practice Lesson 296 throughout the day.

1. Morning Quiet Time (5–15 minutes)

  • Sit comfortably, close your eyes if you like.
  • Take a few slow breaths.
  • Say slowly, several times:

“The Holy Spirit speaks through me today.
I am willing to be His voice of peace.”

  • Then, in your own words, invite:

*“Holy Spirit, I don’t know how to use this day, but You do.

Speak through my thoughts, my words, my actions.

Let me be a channel for Love.”*

  • Sit in silence for a few minutes. You don’t need to “hear” anything special. Just rest in the willingness.

2. Before Interactions

Before a phone call, a meeting, a conversation, or sending a message, pause for a moment and say silently:

“Holy Spirit, speak through me now.
Let what needs to be said be said.
Let what is not helpful fall away.”

Then proceed normally, without strain. You are not trying to sound “holy.” You are simply letting your mind be guided.

3. When You Feel Triggered

When you feel anger, fear, or defensiveness rise up:

1. Pause, take one slow breath.

2. Silently say:

“This is the ego’s voice.
Holy Spirit, I choose Your voice instead.
Speak through me, or keep me silent, as serves peace.”

3. Wait just a moment. Even a tiny pause can shift everything.

4. Short Reminders During the Day

Use simple reminders like:

  • “The Holy Spirit speaks through me now.”
  • “I choose Love’s voice, not fear’s.”
  • “I am willing to be a messenger of peace.”

Say them especially when you feel rushed, pressured, or tempted to attack.

5. Evening Reflection

Before sleep, gently review your day:

  • Where did you feel the Holy Spirit’s presence in your words or actions?
  • Where did you follow the ego instead?

Don’t judge yourself. Simply offer it all:

“Holy Spirit, I give You this day.
Correct my perception and use everything for healing.
Speak through me even in my dreams.”

Comparable ACIM Lessons

This lesson is closely connected to several others:

  • **Lesson 71 – “Only God’s plan for salvation will work.”**

Letting the Holy Spirit speak through you is part of accepting God’s plan instead of the ego’s.

  • **Lesson 154 – “I am among the ministers of God.”**

Both lessons emphasize that your function is to carry a message of Love, not of fear.

  • **Lesson 186 – “Salvation of the world depends on me.”**

Not in an egoic sense, but because every mind that chooses the Holy Spirit helps the whole.

  • **Lesson 191 – “I am the holy Son of God Himself.”**

If you are God’s holy Son, it is natural that the Holy Spirit would speak through you.

  • **Lesson 125 – “In quiet I receive God’s Word today.”**

You first receive, then you extend. The Holy Spirit speaks to you and through you.

Closing Thought

Let today be simple. You do not have to fix yourself or the world. You are only asked to be willing:

*“Holy Spirit, speak through me today.

Let my mind be a place where Love can find a voice.”*

Even the smallest willingness opens a great light.
