*ACIM Lesson 293*

“All fear is past and only love is here.”

I. The Core Teaching

This lesson is a bold statement of what is always true in God, even when it does not feel true to us at all:

In reality, fear is over.
In reality, only love is present.

The key phrase is “in reality.” The Course is not saying, “You will never feel fear again,” or “You should not be afraid.” It is saying something deeper: fear has no real existence in God’s creation. It is a dream-image, a temporary hallucination in a sleeping mind. Love is the only thing that actually is.

What is the ego trying to hide?

The ego’s entire existence depends on fear. It is a thought system built on the belief:

  • I am separate from God.
  • I am separate from you.
  • I am vulnerable, guilty, and alone.

From this belief, fear naturally arises. If I am separate, I can be attacked, abandoned, judged, and destroyed. The ego then uses this fear to keep itself in place. It whispers:

  • “You *are* this fearful self.”
  • “You *are* this body.”
  • “You *are* this history of mistakes and pain.”
  • “You *are* this anxiety about the future.”

The ego must hide the fact that fear is not real in God’s Mind. Why? Because if you truly recognized that fear has no real power, the ego would lose its foundation. You would no longer believe its stories. You would no longer feel compelled to defend, to attack, to judge, or to cling to guilt.

So the ego hides:

1. *Your invulnerability in God.*

It insists you are fragile, breakable, and at risk.

2. *Your innocence.*

It insists you are guilty and must be punished or at least ashamed.

3. *The present moment as the only time there is.*

It insists the past defines you and the future threatens you.

4. *The presence of love right now.*

It insists love is missing, lost, or conditional—something you must earn or fear losing.

What is the Holy Spirit revealing?

The Holy Spirit speaks for the truth of your being. It gently reinterprets everything the ego made. The Holy Spirit reveals:

1. *You remain as God created you.*

Not a body, not a story, not a pile of memories, but a holy, loving, innocent mind.

2. *Fear is a mistaken perception, not a fact.*

It is like a nightmare: it feels real while you are in it, but it never actually touches the sleeper.

3. *Only love is here.*

Not “only love will be here later,” but now. The Holy Spirit invites you to look past appearances—past conflict, illness, loss—and recognize that underneath all forms, the only real content is love or a call for love.

4. *The past is gone.*

What you think you did, what you think others did to you, is over. Only the present opportunity to love remains.

In this lesson, you are not being asked to force yourself to believe, “I am not afraid.” You are being invited to question fear’s reality and to lean into a deeper truth: if God is Love, and I am in God, then fear cannot be the truth of me.

II. Applied to Daily Life

Let’s bring this into the situations that actually trouble you.

1. Relationships

You might feel:

  • Fear of abandonment
  • Fear of conflict
  • Fear of being seen as “too much” or “not enough”
  • Fear of betrayal or rejection

The ego says: “These fears are proof that something is wrong with you or with them.”

The Holy Spirit says: “These fears are calls for healing, not proof of guilt.”

*Example:*

Your partner seems distant. You feel a rising panic: “They don’t love me anymore.” The ego rushes in with stories: “I knew it. I’m not lovable. They’re selfish. I’ll be alone again.”

Practicing this lesson, you pause and say inwardly:

“All fear is past and only love is here.
Right now, I am feeling fear, but this fear is not the truth.
Holy Spirit, show me the love that is here.”

Maybe you are guided to speak honestly, gently, instead of attacking or withdrawing. Maybe you are guided to simply sit in quiet trust for a moment. The shift is from “Fear is real and I must defend” to “Fear is a mistaken perception and I am willing to see love instead.”

2. Work and Finances

You may fear:

  • Losing your job
  • Not having enough money
  • Being judged as incompetent
  • Failing in your career

The ego says: “Your worth depends on your performance and your bank account.”

The Holy Spirit says: “Your worth is established by God and cannot be changed.”

*Example:*

You’re worried about an upcoming performance review. Anxiety churns: “What if I’m not good enough? What if they fire me?”

You practice:

“All fear is past and only love is here.
This fear is about a future that does not exist yet.
In this present moment, I am safe in God.
Holy Spirit, how would You have me see this?”

You might be guided to prepare calmly, to be honest about your needs, or to trust that even if a form changes (job, role, income), your true safety remains in God. You are loosening the belief that your survival and identity depend on this job.

3. Illness and the Body

You may fear:

  • Pain
  • Deterioration
  • Death
  • Dependency on others

The ego says: “You are this body. If it is threatened, you are threatened.”

The Holy Spirit says: “You are not a body. You are free. You are God’s Son, eternal and unchanged.”

*Example:*

You receive a worrying medical test result. Fear surges: “What if I die? What if this gets worse?”

You don’t have to pretend you feel no fear. Instead, you bring the fear to the light:

“All fear is past and only love is here.
I feel afraid, but this fear is not my identity.
Holy Spirit, help me remember I am more than this body.”

You still follow appropriate medical guidance. But you let the Holy Spirit reinterpret the situation: it becomes a classroom in trust, not a punishment or proof of abandonment by God.

4. Anxiety and Daily Stress

You may fear:

  • Being overwhelmed
  • Making mistakes
  • Not being able to handle life’s demands

The ego says: “You are alone with this. You must control everything.”

The Holy Spirit says: “You are never alone. Help is always present in your mind.”

*Example:*

Your to-do list is long; you feel tight in your chest, scattered, pressured.

You pause:

“All fear is past and only love is here.
I am not required to carry this alone.
Holy Spirit, order my day for me.”

You may feel guided to do one thing at a time, to say no to something, or simply to breathe and soften. The content of your day may not change much, but the inner teacher you are listening to does.

III. Overcoming Resistance

This lesson can feel difficult because it seems to contradict your direct experience. You might think:

  • “But I *do* feel afraid. How can all fear be past?”
  • “Is this asking me to deny my feelings?”
  • “If only love is here, why is there so much suffering?”

The Course is not asking you to deny your feelings. It is asking you to question their interpretation.

You can say:

  • “I feel fear, but I am willing to consider that this fear is not the ultimate truth.”
  • “I feel anxious, but I am willing to believe there is a deeper layer of safety beneath this.”

The fear of letting go often comes from the belief:

“If I give up fear, I will be unprotected. I need fear to keep me safe.”

The Holy Spirit gently answers:

“Fear has never truly protected you. It has only made you suffer.
Love is your safety, not fear.”

So if resistance arises, you can simply acknowledge it:

“I am afraid to trust this.
Holy Spirit, I am willing to be shown, little by little, that I am safe in You.”

You are not asked to leap into perfect trust all at once. You are asked to be willing. Even a tiny willingness is enough for the Holy Spirit to begin to shift your perception.

IV. Today’s Practice

Here is a simple way to practice Lesson 293 throughout the day.

1. Morning Quiet Time (5–15 minutes)

  • Sit comfortably, close your eyes, and take a few slow breaths.
  • Say slowly, with intention:

“All fear is past and only love is here.
Father, help me remember this today.
Let me see with Your eyes, not my fear.”

  • Imagine placing all your worries, one by one, into a gentle light in your mind. You don’t have to fix them; just offer them.
  • Sit in silence for a few minutes, letting the words “Only love is here” sink into you. If fearful thoughts arise, simply notice and let them pass like clouds.

2. During the Day: In Moments of Disturbance

Whenever you feel upset, anxious, angry, or guilty, pause—even for a few seconds—and say inwardly:

“All fear is past and only love is here.
This feeling is a call for healing, not a fact about who I am.
Holy Spirit, show me the love in this situation.”

You might not see it immediately, but your willingness opens the door.

3. Short Reminders

Set a reminder (phone alarm, sticky note, etc.) a few times during the day:

  • When it goes off, stop briefly and repeat:

“All fear is past and only love is here.”

  • Let it be a reset button, bringing you back to the present moment.

4. Evening Reflection

Before sleep:

  • Recall any moments of fear or stress from the day.
  • For each one, say:

“I bring this to the light.
All fear is past and only love is here.
I choose to see this differently.”

  • Let the day be gently reinterpreted by the Holy Spirit as a series of opportunities to learn trust.

V. Comparable ACIM Lessons

Several lessons echo and support Lesson 293:

  • **Lesson 48: “There is nothing to fear.”**

States the same truth very directly. Fear has no real cause in God.

  • **Lesson 109: “I rest in God.”**

Emphasizes the safety and rest that come when we stop trusting fear and lean into God’s presence.

  • **Lesson 132: “I loose the world from all I thought it was.”**

Helps you release fearful interpretations of the world, making room for the recognition that only love is here.

  • **Lesson 189: “I feel the Love of God within me now.”**

Brings the focus to the experience of love’s presence, not as an idea, but as a felt reality.

  • **Lesson 261: “God is my refuge and security.”**

Replaces the ego’s false security (defense, control, attack) with the true safety of God’s Love.

All of these lessons work together to loosen the belief in fear and strengthen your trust in the Love that has always held you.

VI. Closing Thought

You do not have to prove that all fear is past. You only have to be willing to let it be so in your awareness, one moment at a time.

Each time you remember, “Only love is here,” you take a small step out of the dream of fear and back into the truth of your Self. That is enough for today.
