*ACIM Lesson 285*
"My holiness shines bright and clear today."
(From the Review VI context: reviewing Lesson 269 – “My sight goes forth to look upon Christ’s face.”)
The Core Teaching
This lesson is a quiet but powerful declaration of identity. It says:
- You are not the guilty, broken, unworthy self the ego tells you that you are.
- You are holiness itself, created by God, unchanged by anything you think you have done.
- That holiness is not dim, fragile, or partial. It “shines bright and clear.”
To the ego, “holiness” sounds like something far away, or something you might one day achieve if you become “good enough.” In A Course in Miracles, holiness is not an achievement; it is your fact. It is the way God created you, and what God creates cannot be altered.
What is the ego trying to hide?
The ego’s entire strategy is to keep you from discovering that you are already holy. If you knew that fully, the ego would disappear, because it only survives on the belief in guilt, fear, and separation.
The ego tries to hide:
1. *Your innocence*
It constantly reminds you of your “mistakes,” your past, your flaws. It whispers that you are secretly bad, or at least “not enough.” It wants you to believe that you are defined by your errors and your body.
2. *Your unity with everyone*
If you are holy, then so is everyone else. Holiness is shared. The ego needs you to see differences, to judge, to compare, to compete. It wants you to believe that some people are more worthy of love than others, and that you must protect yourself.
3. *Your safety in God*
If you are holy, you are safe, because holiness cannot be attacked or destroyed. The ego wants you to feel vulnerable, at risk, and under threat, so that you will cling to it for “protection.”
So the ego tells a story:
“You are a body. You are guilty. You are alone. You must defend yourself. You must prove your worth.”
This lesson gently exposes that story as a dream. It says instead:
“My holiness shines bright and clear today.”
Not “will shine,” not “might shine if I improve,” but shines now.
What is the Holy Spirit revealing?
The Holy Spirit is the Voice in your mind that remembers the truth about you and everyone. In this lesson, the Holy Spirit is revealing:
1. *Your true identity*
You are the holy Son of God, not a frightened personality in a fragile body. Your holiness is not something you earn; it is what you are.
2. *Your inner light*
“Shines bright and clear” means your holiness is not hidden, except by your own choice to look away. The Holy Spirit invites you to turn toward that light within and let it illuminate your thoughts, your relationships, and your perception of the world.
3. *A new purpose for perception*
In the review context (Lesson 269), we are told: “My sight goes forth to look upon Christ’s face.” Your holiness is the “lens” through which you can see the Christ in others. The Holy Spirit reveals that your purpose is not to judge, but to recognize the light in everyone.
Applied to Daily Life
Let’s bring this down to the level of ordinary experience—relationships, work, illness, anxiety, and daily stress.
Relationships
Suppose you’re in a conflict with a partner, friend, or family member. The ego says:
- “They are wrong.”
- “I must defend myself.”
- “If I forgive, I’ll be weak or taken advantage of.”
From this lesson, you pause and say inwardly:
- “My holiness shines bright and clear today.
If I am holy, they must be holy too, beneath all the confusion.
I want to see their holiness instead of their guilt.”
You might not feel this fully yet, but even the willingness opens the door. You begin to notice:
- Maybe they are afraid, just as you are.
- Maybe their attack is a call for love.
- Maybe you can listen instead of react.
Your holiness does not make you superior; it reveals that no one is superior or inferior. You start to respond with more patience, more gentleness, and less need to win.
Work
At work, you might feel competition, pressure, or fear of failure. The ego says:
- “You are your performance.”
- “Your value depends on what others think.”
- “You must constantly prove yourself.”
This lesson invites a different inner stance:
- “My holiness shines bright and clear today.
My worth is established by God, not by my job.
I bring holiness to this workplace simply by being what I am.”
From that place, you can:
- Do your tasks responsibly, but without panic.
- See co-workers not as rivals but as brothers.
- Let go of the need to attack yourself when you make a mistake.
You may still correct errors, but without self-hatred. You remember: “An error is something to be corrected, not a sin to be punished.”
Illness
When the body is sick or in pain, the ego says:
- “You *are* this body.”
- “You are weak, broken, and at the mercy of the world.”
The Course never asks you to deny symptoms. It asks you to question your identity. In illness, you might say:
- “My holiness shines bright and clear today, even if my body does not feel well.
I am not this body. I am the holy Son of God. My holiness is untouched by pain.”
This does not mean you avoid medical help. You can take medicine, see doctors, rest—all guided by the Holy Spirit. But you hold a deeper awareness:
- “My true Self is not sick. My holiness remains as God created it.”
This inner shift reduces fear, which is itself a form of healing.
Anxiety and Daily Stress
In daily stress—traffic, bills, deadlines, family demands—the ego says:
- “You are overwhelmed.”
- “There is not enough time, not enough money, not enough you.”
This lesson offers a quiet counter-message:
- “My holiness shines bright and clear today.
In my holiness, I am not alone. I am held in God’s Love.
I can bring peace into each situation, instead of adding to the fear.”
You might pause for a few seconds before a stressful meeting and say:
- “Let my holiness go before me.
Let me see the Christ in everyone here.
Let me remember I am safe in God.”
Even a brief pause like this can soften the edges of the day.
Overcoming Resistance
Why might this lesson be difficult?
1. *It feels arrogant*
The ego says, “Who do you think you are, calling yourself holy?”
But in the Course, holiness is not personal specialness. It is shared identity. To say “I am holy” is to say, “I am as God created me, and so is everyone else.”
2. *It clashes with your self-image*
You may think of past actions and feel unworthy. The ego uses memory as evidence against you. The Holy Spirit says:
“Nothing you have done has changed what you are. You can learn from the past, but it cannot define you.”
3. *Fear of losing your familiar self*
Part of you may fear:
“If I accept I am holy, I might have to give up my grievances, my specialness, my victim stories. Who will I be then?”
This fear is understandable. The Course is asking you to let go of a painful but familiar identity. It reassures you that what you gain is peace, not loss.
4. *You don’t feel holy*
The lesson is not asking you to feel holy; it is asking you to be willing to accept that holiness is the truth, even if your feelings lag behind. Feelings will gradually follow the acceptance of truth.
You can speak honestly to the Holy Spirit:
- “I don’t really believe I’m holy. I feel guilty and small.
But I am willing to be shown another way of seeing myself.
Please teach me what my holiness means.”
This honesty is itself a doorway to healing.
Today’s Practice
Here is a simple way to practice Lesson 285 throughout the day.
1. Morning Quiet Time (5–15 minutes)
- Sit comfortably, close your eyes, and become aware of your breath.
- Gently say to yourself, slowly:
“My holiness shines bright and clear today.”
- Let the words sink in. You don’t have to force belief. Just let them be present in your mind.
- Imagine a soft, gentle light within you—not harsh or dramatic, just a quiet glow. This is a symbol of your holiness.
- Say inwardly:
“Holy Spirit, help me see myself as You see me.
Help me remember that my holiness is Your gift, not my achievement.”
- Rest in silence for a few minutes, letting the idea “My holiness shines bright and clear today” repeat softly in your mind.
2. Short Practice Periods During the Day
Several times during the day—especially when you feel stressed, upset, or tempted to judge—pause for 10–20 seconds and say:
- “My holiness shines bright and clear today.
Let me see with the eyes of holiness now.”
If you are with someone, you might add silently:
- “Your holiness shines bright and clear as well.
Let me see the Christ in you.”
3. Using the Lesson with Specific Situations
When something upsets you—an argument, a worry, a physical symptom—bring it into the light of this lesson:
- “In this situation, my holiness shines bright and clear today.
I choose to respond from holiness, not from fear.”
You might ask:
- “Holy Spirit, how would my holiness respond here?
What would I say or do if I remembered who I am?”
Listen quietly. A gentle impulse—toward patience, kindness, honesty, or silence—may arise.
4. Evening Reflection
At the end of the day, take a few minutes to look back:
- Where did you remember your holiness, even a little?
- Where did you forget and fall into guilt or fear?
Do not judge yourself. Instead, say:
- “Even when I forgot, my holiness still shone bright and clear.
I am willing to remember more fully tomorrow.”
Comparable ACIM Lessons
Several lessons echo and support Lesson 285:
- **Lesson 35: “My mind is part of God’s. I am very holy.”**
Establishes holiness as your natural state, not a reward.
- **Lesson 58 (Review): “My holiness envelops everything I see.”**
Shows that your holiness extends to your perception of the world.
- **Lesson 156: “I walk with God in perfect holiness.”**
Emphasizes that holiness is shared with God and is your constant companion.
- **Lesson 299: “Eternal holiness abides in me.”**
Reinforces that holiness is eternal and unchanging.
- **Lesson 67: “Love created me like itself.”**
Connects holiness with your origin in Love.
All these lessons work together to gently undo the belief that you are guilty, separate, and small, and to restore the awareness that you are holy, safe, and loved.
Closing Thought
Let this be your quiet affirmation today:
“I do not have to earn my holiness.
I only have to stop denying it.
My holiness shines bright and clear today,
and in that light, I will learn to see.”
