*ACIM Lesson 27: “Above all else I want to see.”*
The Core Teaching
“Above all else I want to see” is a declaration of desire. In A Course in Miracles, desire is powerful: what you truly want, you will experience. This lesson is not about physical sight. It is about spiritual vision—Christ’s vision—the way the Holy Spirit looks upon everything.
To “see” in the Course means to recognize what is real, loving, and eternal, and to no longer be fooled by appearances of separation, guilt, and fear. When you say, “Above all else I want to see,” you are saying:
- I want truth more than illusion.
- I want peace more than conflict.
- I want love more than being right.
- I want God’s perspective more than the ego’s.
This is a reorientation of your entire mind.
#### What is the ego trying to hide?
The ego’s survival depends on you not seeing clearly. It maintains itself by keeping your attention on:
- **Differences** instead of shared innocence.
- **Bodies** instead of minds.
- **Past grievances** instead of present peace.
- **Future fears** instead of present safety.
The ego wants you to believe you are a separate, vulnerable self, living in a dangerous world, trying to protect a fragile identity. It hides the simple truth that:
- You are not the body.
- You are not your story.
- You are not your guilt or your shame.
- You are still as God created you—whole, innocent, and loved.
If you truly saw this, the ego’s entire thought system would collapse. So it distracts you with judgment, comparison, blame, and worry. It says, “Look here—at what they did, at what might happen, at what you did wrong.” It never says, “Look within and see the light that cannot be harmed.”
#### What is the Holy Spirit revealing?
The Holy Spirit is the quiet, loving presence in your mind that gently corrects your perception. When you say, “Above all else I want to see,” you are inviting the Holy Spirit to show you:
- The innocence behind every fearful behavior.
- The call for love behind every attack.
- The shared Self behind every separate face.
- The safety of your true Identity beneath all appearances of threat.
The Holy Spirit reveals that:
- You are always in the presence of love, even if you are not yet aware of it.
- Nothing real can be threatened, and nothing unreal exists.
- Every situation is either an expression of love or a call for love—and both are answered with love.
This lesson is a turning of your will toward that vision. You are not yet asked to see perfectly; you are asked to want to see. That willingness is everything.
Applied to Daily Life
Let’s bring this into very ordinary situations, because that’s where the Course is meant to be lived.
#### 1. Relationships
Suppose you’re in conflict with a partner, friend, or family member. They say something hurtful. The ego says:
- “They don’t respect you.”
- “You need to defend yourself.”
- “You’re not safe with them.”
Your mind fills with arguments, memories of past hurts, and imagined future conflicts.
Here is where the lesson comes in. You pause inwardly and say:
“Above all else I want to see.”
You are not asking to see who is more wrong. You are asking to see the truth behind the appearance. You might add:
- “I want to see my brother as he truly is.”
- “I want to see myself as I truly am.”
- “I want to see the innocence here.”
As you hold this desire, you may notice:
- Their words came from their own fear or pain.
- Your urge to attack is really your own fear of being unworthy.
- Beneath the conflict is a shared longing to be loved and understood.
You may still need to set boundaries or speak honestly, but you will do it with more gentleness and less attack. You begin to see with the Holy Spirit instead of the ego.
#### 2. Work and career
At work you might feel overwhelmed, underappreciated, or anxious about performance. The ego says:
- “Your value depends on what you achieve.”
- “You must prove yourself.”
- “If you fail, you are less.”
In the middle of a stressful day, you can silently say:
“Above all else I want to see.”
You are asking to see:
- That your worth is not at stake.
- That your brothers and sisters at work are not competitors but fellow minds, equally worthy.
- That the situation is neutral until you give it meaning.
You might notice that:
- The pressure you feel is largely self-imposed.
- You can bring kindness into even a demanding environment.
- You can choose peace even if the outer situation doesn’t change immediately.
#### 3. Illness and the body
When the body is in pain or illness, fear easily arises. The ego says:
- “You are the body.”
- “You are at the mercy of forces beyond your control.”
- “This proves you are weak and vulnerable.”
To practice the lesson here is not to deny the symptoms, but to question the meaning you’ve given them. You can say:
“Above all else I want to see.”
You are asking to see:
- That your true Self is not sick.
- That your identity is not defined by the body’s condition.
- That even in illness, you remain loved, held, and safe in God.
This does not mean you refuse medical help or ignore pain. It means you remember: My reality is spirit, not flesh. From this remembrance, fear can soften, and sometimes even the body responds with greater ease.
#### 4. Anxiety and daily stress
Anxiety is usually the mind racing into imagined futures or replaying past events. The ego says:
- “You must control everything.”
- “Something bad is coming.”
- “You are alone in this.”
In a moment of anxiety, gently bring in the lesson:
“Above all else I want to see.”
You are asking:
- “Let me see this moment as it is, not as my fear paints it.”
- “Let me see that I am not alone.”
- “Let me see that I am carried, even now.”
Often you will notice that right now, in this very instant, you are physically safe. The fear is about a picture in the mind. As you choose to want true vision more than you want to follow the fear, a little space opens. In that space, peace can enter.
Overcoming Resistance
This lesson can feel threatening to the ego, because it is a statement of priority: Above all else I want to see. The ego hears this as, “Above all else I want to stop believing you.” So resistance is natural.
You might notice:
- Doubts: “What if I don’t really want this?”
- Fear: “If I see truly, will I have to give up what I love?”
- Defensiveness: “But I *am* right about this person; I don’t want to see them differently.”
- Weariness: “This feels like too much. I just want a normal life.”
Gently remember:
- The Course never asks you to sacrifice anything real. It only asks you to let go of illusions that hurt you.
- To “see” with the Holy Spirit is not to lose yourself, but to find your true Self.
- You are not being forced. You are being invited. Willingness, even a little, is enough.
If fear arises, you can say:
- “I am afraid of seeing, but I am willing to be willing.”
- “Holy Spirit, help me want what will truly make me happy.”
- “I do not know what will bring me peace, but You do.”
Your resistance does not disqualify you; it simply shows you where you are still afraid. That, too, can be brought to the Holy Spirit.
Today’s Practice (for Lesson 27)
The Course gives a simple structure for this lesson. You can adapt it gently to your day.
*1. Central idea*
Repeat slowly, with as much sincerity as you can:
“Above all else I want to see.”
Let it sink in. You are not forcing belief; you are expressing willingness.
*2. Longer practice periods (if possible, two or three times today)*
- Find a quiet moment.
- Close your eyes if you wish.
- Say slowly: “Above all else I want to see.”
- Then add: “Above all else I want to see differently.” (This echoes Lesson 21.)
- Sit for a minute or two, letting the words resonate.
- If thoughts arise like, “But I also want this or that,” just notice and gently repeat:
- “Above all else I *want* to want to see.”
You are aligning your desire with truth.
*3. Frequent shorter reminders*
Several times an hour, or whenever you remember, pause briefly and say inwardly:
“Above all else I want to see.”
You can apply it to specific situations:
- “Above all else I want to see this relationship differently.”
- “Above all else I want to see this meeting differently.”
- “Above all else I want to see this fear differently.”
Do not strain. These are gentle reminders, not demands.
*4. When upset*
If you feel anger, fear, guilt, or sadness, use the upset as a cue:
- Pause.
- Take a breath.
- Say: “Above all else I want to see.”
- Then: “I must be seeing wrongly, because I am not at peace. I am willing to see this as the Holy Spirit sees it.”
You do not need to fix the situation. Just invite a new way of seeing.
Comparable ACIM Lessons
This lesson is closely connected with several others:
- **Lesson 20: “I am determined to see.”**
Lesson 20 introduces the determination; Lesson 27 deepens it by placing seeing above all else.
- **Lesson 21: “I am determined to see things differently.”**
Here the Course specifies that it’s not just seeing, but seeing differently—through forgiveness instead of judgment.
- **Lesson 28: “Above all else I want to see things differently.”**
This is the natural next step: not only do you want to see, but you want to see every thing from a new, loving perspective.
- **Lesson 34: “I could see peace instead of this.”**
This shows the result of true vision: when you see with the Holy Spirit, you see peace where the ego saw conflict.
All these lessons work together to loosen your grip on the ego’s version of reality and open you to the gentle, consistent vision of the Holy Spirit.
Closing Thought
Each time you say, “Above all else I want to see,” you are taking the hand of the Holy Spirit and turning, even slightly, toward the light. You don’t have to see perfectly today. You are only asked to want to see. That small willingness is the doorway through which a great Love can enter your mind and gently transform your world.
