Lesson 269 – “My sight goes forth to look upon Christ’s face.”
The Core Teaching
This lesson is about a radical shift in how we see. It says that our real purpose is not to look at the world through the eyes of the body, but to let our inner sight go forth to find the Christ in everyone and everything.
In A Course in Miracles, “Christ” does not mean only Jesus. It means the one Self we all share—the pure, innocent, loving Mind that God created. It is the truth of what you are, and the truth of what everyone else is, beneath all appearances.
When the lesson says, “My sight goes forth to look upon Christ’s face,” it is describing a choice of perception. It is saying:
- I will no longer accept the ego’s version of what I see.
- I will ask to see the light of Christ in every person, including myself.
- I will let the Holy Spirit reinterpret everything I look upon.
#### What is the ego trying to hide?
The ego is the belief that you are separate—from God, from others, and even from your own true Self. It is a thought system built on guilt, fear, and attack. Its survival depends on you never discovering who you really are.
So what does the ego want to hide?
1. *Your innocence.*
The ego whispers that you are guilty, flawed, unworthy, and that you must constantly prove your value. If you truly saw your innocence, the ego would lose its grip.
2. *Everyone else’s innocence.*
The ego needs you to see others as guilty, dangerous, selfish, or at least “not quite right.” This keeps separation alive: “me vs. them,” “the good ones vs. the bad ones,” “the victim vs. the victimizer.”
3. *The unity of all minds.*
If you saw that every mind is actually one Christ-Self, you would no longer believe in attack, betrayal, or loss. The ego’s world of conflict would make no sense.
4. *The unreality of the body as your identity.*
The ego wants you to think: “I am this body. I am this personality. I am this history.” If you saw that you are spirit—limitless, eternal, unchanged by anything of this world—the ego’s story of vulnerability would dissolve.
So the ego uses the body’s eyes to show you a world of differences, problems, and dangers. It says, “Look—this proves you are separate. This proves you are not safe. This proves love is unreliable.”
It is not the world itself that hurts you; it is the interpretation the ego gives it.
#### What is the Holy Spirit revealing?
The Holy Spirit is the Voice for God in your mind—the memory of truth. Where the ego shows you separation, the Holy Spirit shows you unity. Where the ego shows you guilt, the Holy Spirit shows you innocence.
In this lesson, the Holy Spirit is revealing:
1. *Christ is everywhere.*
Not as a body, not as a personality, but as the one light behind all forms. Every person is a window through which Christ can be seen, if you are willing.
2. *You are looking at your Self.*
When you look upon Christ’s face in another, you are seeing your own true Identity reflected back to you. There is only one Self, appearing as many.
3. *Forgiveness is true vision.*
To “look upon Christ’s face” is another way of saying “to forgive.” You choose to see beyond the mistakes, the roles, the defenses, and the past. You let the Holy Spirit show you the truth that was never harmed.
4. *You are safe in God.*
If Christ is what you are, then nothing real can be threatened. The world of fear becomes a passing dream, and your mind rests in a deeper peace.
This lesson is an invitation:
“Holy Spirit, I am willing to let my sight go past appearances. Show me the Christ in everyone I meet. Show me the Christ in myself.”
Applied to Daily Life
Let’s bring this down into very ordinary situations.
#### Relationships
- **A partner who criticizes you**
The ego: “They’re unfair. They don’t appreciate me. I must defend myself.”
The Holy Spirit: “Here is a call for love. Here is someone who is afraid, just like you. Their Christ-Self is untouched by this behavior.”
Practicing the lesson:
“Let my sight go forth to look upon Christ’s face in them. Help me see beyond these words to the innocent Self that only wants love.”
- **A family member with whom you have a long history of conflict**
The ego uses the past as evidence: “They always do this. They never change.”
The Holy Spirit asks you to look again:
“In this moment, can I be willing to see them as God created them—innocent, whole, and loved? I don’t have to deny my feelings, but I can ask to see deeper than my grievances.”
#### Work
- **A difficult coworker or boss**
The ego: “They’re the problem. If they changed, I’d be at peace.”
The Holy Spirit: “Your peace is not dependent on their behavior. You can choose to see Christ in them now.”
You might silently say:
“Behind this role, behind this behavior, there is the same Christ that lives in me. I do not know how to see it, but I am willing.”
- **Competition, comparison, and ambition**
The ego says your worth depends on performance.
The Holy Spirit reminds you: “Your worth is established by God.”
Practicing the lesson:
“Let my sight go forth to look upon Christ’s face in myself. I am not this job. I am not my successes or failures. I am the beloved Son of God.”
#### Illness
- **Your own illness**
The ego: “My body is my identity, and it is failing. I am weak, vulnerable, and at the mercy of the world.”
The Holy Spirit: “You are not a body. You are free. The Christ in you cannot be sick, cannot be harmed.”
This does not mean you ignore treatment or deny symptoms. It means that, while caring for the body, you remember:
“This is not what I am. My true Self remains whole.”
- **Illness in someone you love**
The ego sees tragedy, loss, and injustice.
The Holy Spirit invites you to see the Christ in them:
“Even now, they are the holy Son of God. Their spirit is untouched by this. I can look past the body and remember who they really are.”
#### Anxiety and Daily Stress
- **Worry about the future**
The ego: “You must control everything. Something bad is coming.”
The Holy Spirit: “Christ in you is safe now. You are carried. You are not alone.”
Practicing the lesson:
“Let my sight go forth to look upon Christ’s face in this situation. I may not see how, but I trust there is a loving purpose here.”
- **Daily frustrations: traffic, delays, small conflicts**
Each one becomes a classroom:
“I can use this to strengthen the ego’s story of irritation, or I can use it to practice seeing Christ.”
A simple inner prayer:
“Holy Spirit, show me the Christ here. Show me another way to see this.”
Overcoming Resistance
This lesson can feel difficult because it asks for a complete change in how we see others and ourselves.
Common resistances:
1. *“But they really did hurt me.”*
Forgiveness here does not deny what happened on the level of form. It simply says: “What they did does not change what they are in truth.” You are not asked to approve behavior, only to recognize that the Christ in them remains innocent.
2. *“I don’t want to lose my boundaries.”*
Seeing Christ in someone does not mean staying in harmful situations or saying yes when you mean no. The Holy Spirit may guide you to leave, to speak firmly, or to set clear limits—but without hatred, without dehumanizing the other.
3. *“I don’t see anything holy when I look at people.”*
That’s okay. The Course never demands that you pretend. It only asks for willingness:
“I do not see Christ here yet, but I am willing to be shown. I am willing to have my perception healed.”
4. *Fear of losing your identity*
The ego fears that if you see Christ in everyone, you will lose your specialness—your story, your grievances, your roles. In truth, you are not losing anything real; you are letting go of a small, painful self and remembering a Self that is vast, loved, and at peace.
You do not have to force this. You only need to offer your little willingness and let the Holy Spirit do the rest.
Today’s Practice
Here is a gentle way to practice Lesson 269 today.
*1. Morning quiet time (5–15 minutes)*
Sit comfortably and close your eyes.
- Say slowly, with sincerity:
“My sight goes forth to look upon Christ’s face.”
- Add:
“Holy Spirit, I do not know how to see Christ, but I am willing. Use my eyes, my mind, and my day for this purpose.”
Sit in silence for a few moments. Imagine a soft light in your heart, representing the Christ in you. Let it expand gently, as if it could extend to everyone you will meet today.
*2. Choosing Christ’s vision with specific people*
Bring to mind:
- Someone you love
- Someone you are neutral about
- Someone you find difficult
For each one, say inwardly:
- “You are the Christ, as God created you.
I choose to see your true face, beyond all appearances.”
You don’t have to feel anything special. Just offer the words and the willingness.
*3. During the day: short reminders*
Several times today, pause and repeat quietly:
- “My sight goes forth to look upon Christ’s face.”
Use this especially:
- When you feel irritated or judged
- When you feel afraid or guilty
- When you look in the mirror and criticize yourself
You might add:
- “Let me see with Christ’s vision, not the ego’s.”
*4. Evening reflection*
Before sleep, review your day gently:
- Where did I glimpse even a tiny bit of Christ in someone?
- Where did I refuse to see it?
Do not judge yourself. Simply say:
- “I give all my misperceptions to You, Holy Spirit.
Heal my sight, that I may look upon Christ’s face tomorrow more easily.”
Comparable ACIM Lessons
This lesson connects closely with several others:
- **Lesson 121: “Forgiveness is the key to happiness.”**
Forgiveness is the process by which you clear the way to see Christ’s face instead of the ego’s mask.
- **Lesson 122: “Forgiveness offers everything I want.”**
Seeing Christ in others is what truly satisfies the heart; it is the end of inner conflict.
- **Lesson 124: “Let me remember I am one with God.”**
Oneness with God is the foundation of Christ’s identity in you and in everyone.
- **Lesson 158: “Today I learn to give as I receive.”**
You receive Christ’s vision as you give it—by choosing to see Christ in another, you remember it in yourself.
- **Lesson 161: “Give me your blessing, holy Son of God.”**
This lesson also asks you to look past appearances and ask for the blessing of the Christ in everyone you meet.
- **Lesson 186: “Salvation of the world depends on me.”**
Because your sight is not private, each time you choose to see Christ, you help lift the veil for all minds.
Closing Thought
Today, you are not asked to be perfect. You are only asked to be willing to look again.
Each time you remember, “My sight goes forth to look upon Christ’s face,” you open a little window in your mind through which light can enter. Let that be enough for today. The Holy Spirit will do the rest.
