God is the only goal I have today.

Here is the idea for *A Course in Miracles Lesson 256*:
**Lesson 256**
*God is the only goal I have today.*
The Core Teaching
This lesson is radically simple, and yet it touches the deepest layers of the mind:
**“God is the only goal I have today.”**
In Course language, “God” does not mean a distant deity watching from the sky. It means *Love itself*—pure, changeless, all‑embracing Love. To say “God is my only goal” is to say:
- I want **peace instead of conflict**.
- I want **love instead of fear**.
- I want to remember **what I truly am** instead of defending a false self.
What is the ego trying to hide?
The ego is the thought system of separation: “I am a separate, vulnerable self in a dangerous world.” It survives by convincing you that:
1. *You can find fulfillment in the world* if you just manage it correctly:
- the right partner
- the right job
- the right body
- the right bank account
- the right recognition
2. *Your safety lies in control*:
- control of others’ opinions
- control of circumstances
- control of your image
- control of outcomes
3. *Your identity is your story*: your past, your wounds, your successes, your failures.
The ego is trying to hide one simple fact:
**Nothing in the world can give you the peace you truly want.**
Not because the world is bad, but because the world is *not your home*. It is a projection of the mind’s belief in separation. The ego wants you to keep seeking peace where it cannot be found, so you never question the underlying belief that you are separate from God.
So the ego whispers:
- “You can have God *and* your grievances.”
- “You can have peace *and* your special hatred.”
- “You can love God *and* cherish your idols of control, status, and specialness.”
This lesson gently exposes that lie. If God (Love, Peace, Truth) is your *only goal, then everything that is not of love must be seen as not what you want*.
What is the Holy Spirit revealing?
The Holy Spirit is the memory of God in your mind—the quiet, loving Voice that never attacks, never shames, never frightens. Through this lesson, the Holy Spirit reveals:
1. *You already want only God.*
Deep down, you have never wanted anything but peace, safety, love, and joy. Every worldly goal was a confused attempt to find these. The Holy Spirit is not changing your will; He is *clarifying it*.
2. *You are not being deprived.*
Letting God be your only goal does not mean losing everything you love. It means letting go of the belief that anything outside you can complete you. Then you can enjoy everything without fear, guilt, or clinging.
3. *Peace is available now.*
You do not have to fix your life first. You do not have to become “spiritually advanced.” You only need a little willingness to say:
“Today, more than anything else, I want to remember Love.”
4. *Your function is to accept the Atonement for yourself.*
That means accepting that the separation never truly happened, and you remain as God created you: innocent, whole, and loved. Making God your only goal is the same as saying:
“I will no longer accuse myself or others. I will accept innocence instead of guilt.”
Applied to Daily Life
Let’s bring this into very ordinary situations.
Relationships
You might notice in a relationship:
- You want to be right.
- You want to be validated.
- You want the other person to change.
The ego’s goal is: “I want this person to behave in a way that proves I am worthy and safe.”
To practice this lesson, you might pause and say internally:
“My only goal is God.
My only goal is to remember love.
In this conversation, I want peace more than I want to be right.”
Then you might:
- Listen more gently.
- Drop a sharp remark you were about to make.
- Admit your own fear or hurt instead of attacking.
- Be willing not to win.
You are not sacrificing anything real. You are letting go of a temporary ego victory to receive a deeper peace.
Work and Career
At work, the ego’s goals might be:
- “I must prove my worth.”
- “I must not fail.”
- “I must get ahead of others.”
Anxiety, competition, and burnout follow.
Bringing this lesson to work, you might say:
“God is the only goal I have today.
In this meeting, my goal is peace.
In this project, my goal is to extend kindness and honesty.”
You still do your tasks. You still show up responsibly. But your *inner goal* is different:
- Instead of impressing, you aim to be **helpful and clear**.
- Instead of fearing criticism, you ask for guidance: “How can I respond with love?”
- Instead of using work to build a separate identity, you use it as a classroom for forgiveness and trust.
Illness and the Body
When the body is in pain or illness appears, the ego’s goals are:
- “I must get rid of this at all costs.”
- “I must control this outcome.”
- “This proves I am weak, guilty, or abandoned.”
The Course never asks you to deny symptoms or refuse help. It asks you to question the *meaning* you give them.
With this lesson, you might say:
“God is the only goal I have today.
Even in this illness, my goal is to remember I am not this body.
My goal is peace, trust, and acceptance.”
You still take medicine, see doctors, rest. But you also:
- Ask the Holy Spirit: “How can this be used for healing of the mind?”
- Notice fear and gently offer it up: “I choose peace instead of this.”
- Remember: “My reality is spirit, not flesh. I am not my symptoms.”
Anxiety and Daily Stress
You feel overwhelmed by tasks, bills, news, responsibilities. The ego says:
- “If I don’t control everything, disaster will happen.”
- “I must think about this constantly to stay safe.”
This lesson invites a different stance:
“God is the only goal I have today.
I choose peace instead of worry.
I choose trust instead of control.”
Practically, this can look like:
- Taking a 30-second pause before reacting to an email.
- Breathing and silently saying: “I am willing to see this differently.”
- Asking: “Is this truly important to my peace, or is it just ego drama?”
You will notice that many things you thought were “urgent” are simply ego demands for specialness, control, or defense.
Overcoming Resistance
Why might this lesson feel difficult or even frightening?
1. *Fear of loss.*
You may think: “If God is my only goal, I’ll lose my personality, my pleasures, my relationships, my ambitions.”
The Course assures you: you lose nothing real. You lose only fear, guilt, and the burden of needing the world to complete you.
2. *Fear of a demanding God.*
Many of us carry an image of God as judgmental, harsh, or punishing. If that is your picture, of course you would not want Him as your only goal.
This lesson gently corrects that: God is pure Love, incapable of sacrifice or attack. To want God is to want *perfect safety and joy*.
3. *Attachment to specialness.*
The ego loves to feel “special”: specially loved, specially victimized, specially talented, specially wounded. Making God your only goal means you are willing to see yourself and everyone as *equally loved and equally innocent*. The ego experiences this as a threat to its uniqueness.
4. *Fear of the unknown.*
The ego asks: “Who will I be without my roles, my grievances, my ambitions?”
The Holy Spirit answers: “You will be what you have always been: the beloved Child of God. You will not disappear; your fear will.”
Be gentle with your resistance. You do not have to force yourself to fully accept this idea. You only need a *little willingness*. You can say:
“I am afraid to make God my only goal,
but I am willing to be shown that this is safe and joyful.”
That is enough.
Today’s Practice
Here is a simple way to practice Lesson 256 throughout the day.
1. Morning Quiet Time (5–15 minutes)
- Sit comfortably, close your eyes if you like.
- Take a few slow breaths.
- Say slowly, with intention:
“God is the only goal I have today.
I choose peace.
I choose love.
I choose to remember what I am.”
- Then sit in quiet. If thoughts arise about your day, softly respond:
“This too I place under my one goal:
I want peace more than anything else.”
- You don’t need to force silence. Just keep gently returning to the idea.
2. Hourly (or Frequent) Reminders
Set a reminder if you can. When it goes off, pause for 10–30 seconds:
- Repeat:
“God is the only goal I have right now.”
- Briefly look at whatever is in front of you—an email, a person, a task—and add:
“In this situation, my goal is peace, not conflict.
My goal is love, not fear.”
3. When Upset, Anxious, or Angry
When you notice emotional disturbance:
1. Pause.
2. Acknowledge: “I am not at peace.”
3. Say:
“Somewhere I decided another goal is more important than God.
I am willing to choose again.
God is the only goal I have right now.”
4. Ask silently:
“Holy Spirit, how would You have me see this?
What would it look like if peace were my only goal here?”
Then listen. You may feel a softening, a new idea, or simply a little more space around the situation.
4. Evening Reflection
Before sleep, take a moment to review your day:
- Notice where you remembered your true goal.
- Notice where you forgot and chose fear, attack, or control.
- Without guilt, say:
“I was mistaken there, but I am not condemned.
I choose again: God is the only goal I have.
I rest in Your Love tonight.”
Comparable ACIM Lessons
This lesson is closely connected with several others:
- **Lesson 23: “I can escape from the world I see by giving up attack thoughts.”**
Giving up attack is a way of making God (peace) your only goal.
- **Lesson 61: “I am the light of the world.”**
To accept your function as light is to align with God’s Will instead of the ego’s.
- **Lesson 64: “Let me not forget my function.”**
Your function is forgiveness and peace. Remembering it is the same as remembering that God is your only goal.
- **Lesson 71: “Only God’s plan for salvation will work.”**
The ego has many plans; none bring lasting peace. This lesson prepares the mind to say, “I want only God’s plan.”
- **Lesson 185: “I want the peace of God.”**
This is the deep desire behind Lesson 256. To want the peace of God is to want God as your only goal.
- **Lesson 193: “All things are lessons God would have me learn.”**
Every situation becomes a classroom for choosing your one true goal: peace through forgiveness.
Closing Thought
Today is not about perfection. It is about *direction*.
Each time you remember, even for a moment,
“God is the only goal I have today,”
you turn gently away from fear and toward Love.
You are not alone in this. The Holy Spirit walks with you, translating every circumstance into an opportunity to remember who you are.
Let this be enough for today:
a quiet willingness to say, again and again,
“More than anything else,
I want to remember Love.”
