*ACIM Lesson 241*
“This holy instant is salvation come.”
The Core Teaching
This lesson is about the power of now—but not in a superficial way. It is about the holy instant: the moment in which you stop consulting the past, stop predicting the future, and allow God’s Love to be all that is true right here, right now.
When the lesson says, “This holy instant is salvation come,” it means:
If you are willing, this very moment can be free of guilt, fear, and separation. Not later, not after you improve yourself, not after you fix your life—now.
What is the ego trying to hide?
The ego lives on time. It needs a past to justify guilt and a future to project fear. Its story goes something like this:
- “You did something wrong before; you are stained by your past.”
- “Something bad might happen later; you must worry to protect yourself.”
- “You are separate—from God, from others, and even from your own true Self.”
The ego uses time to keep you from the present moment, because the present is where its whole story falls apart. In the holy instant:
- The past has no power.
- The future has not yet been written.
- Only what God created as you—innocent, loved, and safe—remains.
The ego is trying to hide the fact that your innocence has never been lost. It wants you to believe that salvation is far away, that you must work hard, suffer, and earn it. It tells you that awakening is a long road, maybe lifetimes away.
This lesson exposes that lie. It says: if you are willing to let the past go, and to stop using the future as a screen for your fear, salvation is already here.
What is the Holy Spirit revealing?
The Holy Spirit uses the same “place” the ego fears: the present moment.
The Holy Spirit whispers:
- “You are as God created you, now.”
- “Your past mistakes cannot change what you are.”
- “Your future is safe because it is held in God’s Love.”
- “There is nothing to fear in this instant, because I am with you.”
The holy instant is not something you create; it is something you allow. It is always available because it is simply the truth of what is. The Holy Spirit reveals:
1. *Your innocence* – not as a reward, but as a fact.
2. *Your unity with others* – beneath all appearances, there is only one shared Self.
3. *The unreality of fear* – fear is based on imagined consequences, not on what is here now in God.
So “salvation come” means: in this instant, you can accept that you are not guilty, not abandoned, not alone. You can let yourself be loved.
Applied to Daily Life
Let’s bring this into very ordinary situations.
1. Relationships
Suppose you’re upset with someone: a partner, friend, or family member. The ego rushes in:
- “They always do this.” (past)
- “They will never change.” (future)
- “I must protect myself by staying angry.” (defense)
The holy instant invites you to pause and say inwardly:
“In this holy instant, I am willing to see only what is true.
I let the past go. I release my predictions.
Holy Spirit, show me this person as You see them.”
You may still feel upset at first. That’s okay. But you are opening a space where the Holy Spirit can gently shift your perception. You might feel a softening, a little more willingness to understand, or a sense that your safety does not depend on being right.
The relationship may not “fix” itself instantly, but your mind can be healed in this very moment. That is salvation.
2. Work and Career
At work, you may feel pressure, fear of failure, or anxiety about the future:
- “What if I lose my job?”
- “What if I can’t keep up?”
- “What if I never find my purpose?”
The ego uses these fears to keep you in a constant state of tension. The holy instant says:
“Right now, I am not in the future.
In this instant, I am safe.
Holy Spirit, help me do just the next loving, honest thing.”
You bring your attention back to the present task: one email, one conversation, one step. You let the Holy Spirit guide your words and actions now, instead of trying to control the entire future.
This doesn’t mean you never plan; it means you plan with peace, not with fear. You remember that your real security is not in a job, but in God.
3. Illness and Pain
Illness can trigger deep fear: fear of suffering, of loss, of death. The ego says:
- “This proves you are vulnerable and alone.”
- “Your body is your identity, and it is failing.”
The holy instant does not deny the experience of pain, but it gently re-frames it:
“In this instant, I am more than a body.
I am Spirit, held in God’s Love.
Holy Spirit, help me remember my true Self, even in this.”
You may still take medicine, see doctors, and care for the body—these are not denied. But in the holy instant, you remember: my reality is not this body; my reality is Spirit. This brings a deep, quiet strength, even in the midst of symptoms.
4. Anxiety and Daily Stress
Anxiety is almost always about time: replaying the past or imagining the future. The holy instant is the antidote.
When you feel anxious, you might pause and breathe, then say:
“This holy instant is salvation come.
I do not need to solve everything now.
I only need to let this moment be given to God.”
You might notice that, in this exact second, you are breathing. You are supported. The chair holds you, the floor holds you, life is still here. The mind’s storm is about “what might happen,” but the present is often far gentler than the ego claims.
Overcoming Resistance
Why might this lesson feel difficult?
1. *Fear of losing control*
The ego believes that if it doesn’t constantly manage the past and future, everything will fall apart. Letting the present be holy feels like surrendering control—and that can be scary.
2. *Attachment to grievances*
Part of us may want to hold on to old hurts, because they seem to define who we are. If we let the past go, who will we be? How will we protect ourselves?
3. *Doubt about worthiness*
You might secretly feel: “I don’t deserve salvation now. I must improve first.” The idea that you can be accepted as you are in this instant can feel almost too kind to be believed.
Be very gentle with yourself. You are not asked to force belief. You are only asked for a little willingness:
- Willingness to question the ego’s story.
- Willingness to let one moment be free of condemnation.
- Willingness to be helped.
You can even say:
“Holy Spirit, I am afraid of this idea.
I am afraid that if I let this instant be holy, I will lose myself.
Please hold my fear with me and show me I am safe.”
The Holy Spirit never shames you for your fear. It simply waits, lovingly, for your invitation.
Today’s Practice
Here is a simple way to practice Lesson 241 throughout the day.
1. Morning Quiet Time (5–15 minutes)
1. Sit comfortably, close your eyes, and breathe gently.
2. Say slowly, with as much sincerity as you can:
“This holy instant is salvation come.
I have come to this moment to be set free.”
3. Imagine placing your past in a soft light in front of you. All regrets, hurts, and mistakes. Say:
“I give all of this to You, Holy Spirit.
Let me not use it against myself or anyone today.”
4. Then imagine the future: your plans, fears, hopes. Place them in the same light:
“I give this to You as well.
Guide my steps, but keep my mind in peace.”
5. Sit quietly for a few minutes, simply noticing your breath. If thoughts come, gently repeat:
“This holy instant is salvation come.”
2. During the Day: Short Pauses
Whenever you feel upset, stressed, or worried, pause for a few seconds:
1. Take one conscious breath.
2. Silently say:
“In this instant, I choose peace instead of this.”
“This holy instant is salvation come.”
3. Ask:
“Holy Spirit, how would You have me see this right now?”
You may not hear words, but you might feel a slight relaxation, a new idea, or a gentler attitude.
3. Evening Reflection
Before sleep, review your day briefly:
- Notice moments when you remembered the holy instant.
- Notice moments when you forgot and got caught in fear or anger.
Offer it all to the Holy Spirit:
“If I misused time today, I give that to You.
Correct my perception in my sleep.
Let tomorrow be another chance to live in the holy instant.”
Comparable ACIM Lessons
This lesson is closely related to several others:
- **Lesson 132: “I loose the world from all I thought it was.”**
Both lessons invite you to release your old interpretations and allow a new vision in the present.
- **Lesson 135: “If I defend myself I am attacked.”**
Defenses are always about past and future. The holy instant is defenseless, because it knows you are safe in God now.
- **Lesson 158: “Today I learn to give as I receive.”**
The holy instant is where you receive God’s Love and extend it to others, beyond time and form.
- **Lesson 199: “I am not a body. I am free.”**
The holy instant is the experience of your identity as Spirit, not confined to the body or to time.
- **Lesson 308: “This instant is the only time there is.”**
A direct companion: both emphasize that only the present is real, and in it lies your freedom.
Closing Thought
In every moment today, you have a quiet doorway available to you: the holy instant. You do not need to earn it, understand it fully, or be perfect to enter. You only need to pause and say, “Yes, I am willing to let this moment be given to God.”
Even one sincere holy instant today is enough to begin loosening the chains of the past and the fear of the future. Let this instant be that opening. Salvation is not far away. It is here, gently waiting in your own mind, now.
