Lesson 223 – “God is my life. I have no life but His.”
The Core Teaching
This lesson is a gentle but radical correction of how we see ourselves. It says, in essence:
- You do not have a separate, private life.
- The only life you have is the Life of God, shared with all creation.
- Everything else you call “my life” is a dream of separation.
When the lesson says, “God is my life,” it is not speaking poetically. It is describing a literal metaphysical truth: there is only one Life, one Being, one Mind. You are not a tiny spark that broke off from a great sun. You are still in that sun, of that sun, as that light. You have never left.
The ego’s entire strategy is to convince you that you do have a separate life:
- a personal history
- a personal body
- a personal set of problems
- a personal future and past
It tells you: “This is your life. You must protect it, defend it, improve it, and fear losing it.” The ego’s survival depends on you believing this story.
What is the ego trying to hide?
The ego is trying to hide the fact that:
1. *You are not a separate self.*
The ego insists you are a body with a personal mind, cut off from others and from God. It hides that your true Self is a shared, universal, loving Mind.
2. *You cannot be threatened.*
If God is your life, then your life cannot be harmed, diminished, or ended. The ego hides this by pointing constantly to sickness, aging, conflict, and death as “proof” that you are vulnerable.
3. *You are innocent.*
The ego’s story is that you broke away from God, betrayed Him, and now deserve punishment. It hides that no separation ever occurred, and therefore there is no guilt to pay for.
4. *You are already home.*
The ego says you must “get back to God” through effort, sacrifice, and spiritual achievement. It hides that you are already in God, as God’s Life, and the only “journey” is the undoing of a false belief.
What is the Holy Spirit revealing?
The Holy Spirit uses this lesson to gently remind you:
- “You are not what you made of yourself.”
- “You are what God created you to be: His Life, His Love, His Innocence.”
The Holy Spirit reveals:
1. *Your true Identity is Spirit.*
Not the body, not the personality, not the story. You are the extension of God’s Being. The same Life that animates all things is what you are.
2. *Your safety is guaranteed.*
Because God’s Life cannot be threatened, and you are that Life, your real Self is forever safe. What seems to be threatened is only a temporary image, a dream figure.
3. *You are joined with all.*
If there is only one Life, then every brother and sister shares that Life with you. Separation is impossible. Conflict is therefore always a misunderstanding of who you are.
4. *Peace is your natural state.*
When you stop claiming a private life with private problems, you return to the quiet center of Being. Peace is not something you earn; it is what remains when illusions of separation are released.
Applied to Daily Life
Let’s bring this into some very human situations.
Relationships
Suppose you feel hurt by a partner or friend. The ego says:
- “They attacked *my* feelings.”
- “They don’t care about *my* needs.”
- “I must defend *myself* or withdraw.”
Underneath is the belief: “I am a separate life, and they are another separate life, and we are in competition.”
This lesson invites a different perception:
- “God is my life, and God is their life as well.”
- “We are not two separate beings trying to negotiate; we are one Life appearing as two.”
- “If we share the same Life, then only love is truly real between us. The rest is confusion.”
From this awareness, you might:
- Listen more gently, realizing their pain is not “other” than yours.
- Speak more honestly, without attack, because you are not protecting a fragile, separate self.
- Ask the Holy Spirit: “Show me how to see this person as sharing my Life in God.”
Work and Career
At work, the ego says:
- “This is *my* career, *my* success, *my* failure.”
- “I must prove my worth, or I will be nothing.”
This creates anxiety, competition, and burnout.
From this lesson’s perspective:
- “God is my life. My worth is established by God, not by my job.”
- “My function is to extend love and peace, wherever I appear to be.”
- “I am here as the Life of God, not as a frightened worker trying to survive.”
Practically, this might look like:
- Taking a quiet moment before a meeting to remember: “I am here to bring peace, not to defend an image.”
- Releasing the idea that your identity is your role or title.
- Trusting that guidance will show you what to say and do, because the Life in you is wise and whole.
Illness
When the body seems sick, the ego says:
- “My life is in danger.”
- “I am this body, and it is failing.”
This lesson does not ask you to deny symptoms or avoid treatment. It invites you to shift the identity you place in the body.
You can say inwardly:
- “This body may appear weak, but God is my life, and that Life cannot be sick.”
- “I will care for this body kindly, but I will not confuse it with my Self.”
- “Even in pain, I remain as God created me: whole, eternal Spirit.”
This brings a deep, quiet strength, even in the midst of medical challenges.
Anxiety and Daily Stress
Daily stress usually comes from the thought:
- “I have to manage *my* life.”
- “If I don’t control everything, something terrible will happen to *me*.”
This lesson offers a different foundation:
- “I do not have a separate life to manage. I am carried in the Life of God.”
- “I can rest in the awareness that I am not alone, not abandoned, not unsupported.”
In a moment of anxiety, you might pause and repeat slowly:
- “God is my life. I have no life but His.”
- “I am safe in the Life of God.”
- “I do not walk alone.”
Overcoming Resistance
Why might this lesson feel difficult?
1. *Fear of losing individuality.*
You may think, “If I don’t have my own life, do I disappear?”
The truth is the opposite: you do not disappear; your false identity dissolves. What remains is a Self so vast, so loving, so free, that the little self was only a shadow in comparison.
2. *Attachment to the personal story.*
We often feel attached to “my story”—my wounds, my achievements, my personality. Letting go of the idea of a private life can feel like losing something precious.
The Holy Spirit is not taking anything real from you. Only illusions fall away. What is loving, kind, creative, and joyful in you is part of God’s Life and cannot be lost.
3. *Fear of trust.*
To say “God is my life” is to trust that you are held, guided, and loved. The ego whispers, “You can’t trust that. You must rely on yourself.”
The practice is to gently notice that voice and say, “I am willing to try another way. I am willing to let myself be carried, even a little.”
If doubts arise, you can simply say:
- “Holy Spirit, I am afraid of this idea. Please help me see it differently.”
- “I do not understand what this lesson really means, but I am willing to learn.”
Willingness is enough.
Today’s Practice
Here is a simple way to practice Lesson 223 today.
1. Morning Quiet Time (5–15 minutes)
- Sit comfortably, close your eyes.
- Take a few slow, gentle breaths.
- Say slowly, with sincerity:
“God is my life. I have no life but His.”
- Let the words sink in. You don’t have to *force* belief. Just let them rest in your mind.
- Then, imagine your sense of “me” softening. You don’t need to define yourself. Just allow yourself to *be*.
- If thoughts come like “But what about my job, my family, my body?” gently respond:
- “All of this is held within the Life of God. I am not separate from Him.”
- Sit in quiet for a few minutes, letting the idea be like a soft light in your mind.
2. Short Reminders During the Day
Whenever you feel:
- stressed
- hurried
- upset
- anxious
- self-critical
Pause for a moment and repeat inwardly:
- “God is my life.”
- Or, “I rest in the Life of God.”
- Or, “I do not walk alone. God is my life.”
Let this be like taking a sip of clear water in the middle of your day.
3. In Relationships
If conflict or tension arises with someone:
- Silently say: “God is my life, and God is your life. We are not separate.”
- Ask: “Holy Spirit, show me how to see this person as sharing my Life in God.”
- Then listen quietly inside. You may feel a softening, a willingness to be kind, or a new way to respond.
4. Evening Reflection
Before sleep:
- Recall a few moments from the day when you remembered the lesson.
- Thank yourself for your willingness, even if it was just once.
- If there were times you forgot and reacted from fear, gently say:
- “Even then, God was my life. Nothing real was harmed.”
- End with:
“God is my life. I have no life but His. I rest in Him tonight.”
Comparable ACIM Lessons
This lesson is closely connected with several others:
- **Lesson 35: “My mind is part of God’s. I am very holy.”**
Both lessons correct the belief in a separate, private mind or life.
- **Lesson 70: “My salvation comes from me.”**
Because the Life of God is in you as your true Self, salvation is not outside you.
- **Lesson 91: “Miracles are seen in light.” / Lesson 93: “Light and joy and peace abide in me.”**
These affirm that what you truly are is light, joy, and peace—God’s Life in you.
- **Lesson 163: “There is no death. The Son of God is free.”**
If God is your life, death cannot touch what you are. Only a body-image seems to die.
- **Lesson 199: “I am not a body. I am free.”**
This prepares the mind to accept that your reality is Spirit, not flesh.
All of these lessons work together to undo the central ego belief: “I am a separate, vulnerable self, living a private life in a dangerous world.”
Closing Thought
Let this thought be like a gentle hand on your heart today:
You do not have to carry yourself through life alone. You are the Life of God, forever held, forever loved, forever safe. Each time you remember, even for a moment, “God is my life,” a little more fear dissolves, and a little more of your true Self shines through.
