Lesson 188: “The peace of God is shining in me now.”
I. The Core Teaching
This lesson is a gentle but radical reminder of what you already are.
“The peace of God is shining in me now” does not mean that peace is something you must earn, create, or deserve. It says that peace is already present, already shining, already your very nature. The lesson is not trying to give you peace; it is inviting you to recognize the peace that has never left.
What the ego is trying to hide
The ego’s entire strategy depends on one central lie:
“You are separate, guilty, and vulnerable.”
If you are convinced of this, then you will look outside yourself for safety, love, and peace. You will chase them in people, achievements, possessions, and spiritual accomplishments. The ego wants you to believe that peace is:
- In the future, after you fix yourself
- In other people’s approval
- In a better body, better job, better relationship
- In being “spiritually advanced” enough
Why? Because if you ever truly recognized that peace is already in you, shining right now, the ego’s whole identity would dissolve. You would no longer need its constant commentary, judgments, and defenses. You would no longer believe in its story of lack.
So the ego hides your inner light by:
- Distracting you with problems and conflicts
- Telling you you’re not ready for peace yet
- Convincing you that you must suffer to atone
- Making you afraid of stillness, because in stillness its voice fades
The ego is not powerful; it is noisy. Its goal is to keep your attention away from the quiet radiance within.
What the Holy Spirit is revealing
The Holy Spirit gently reveals the opposite:
1. *You are not what you think you are.*
You are not the anxious mind, the aging body, or the shifting personality. You are the holy, innocent Son of God—pure awareness, pure love.
2. *Peace is not something you get; it is what you are.*
The “peace of God” is not a mood. It is the natural state of your being as created by God. It shines in you the way the sun shines—without effort, without interruption.
3. *Nothing real can threaten this peace.*
Circumstances can swirl, bodies can suffer, relationships can shift, but the light in you is untouched. The Holy Spirit keeps pointing you back to this unchanging center.
4. *You are not alone.*
The peace in you is the same peace in everyone. When you remember it in yourself, you remember it for all. Your acceptance of peace is never a private gain; it is a gift to the entire Sonship.
This lesson is a call to recognition, not to achievement. It says:
“Look within, beneath the noise, and you will find that peace is already shining.”
II. Applied to Daily Life
Let’s bring this into the situations where we usually forget.
1. Relationships
You’re in a conflict with someone you love. You feel misunderstood, attacked, or abandoned. The ego says:
- “I must defend myself.”
- “I must prove I’m right.”
- “Their behavior determines my peace.”
In that moment, this lesson invites a pause:
“The peace of God is shining in me now.”
You might say silently:
“Peace is not in their words or actions. Peace is in me, right now, unchanged. I can rest in it even if they are upset.”
From this inner resting place:
- You listen more gently.
- You speak more honestly without attack.
- You are less hooked by their reactions.
You may still set boundaries or have hard conversations, but you do so from a center of peace instead of fear.
2. Work and career
Maybe you’re anxious about money, performance, or recognition. The ego says:
- “If I don’t succeed, I’m not safe.”
- “My value depends on what I produce.”
This lesson says:
“Your value is established by God, not by your résumé. The peace of God is shining in you now, in the middle of emails, meetings, and deadlines.”
You might take a brief pause at your desk, close your eyes for 10 seconds, and remember:
“Peace is here, not after I finish everything, but in the midst of it.”
You may still work diligently, but the compulsion and fear begin to loosen. Work becomes a place to express inner peace, not to earn it.
3. Illness and the body
When the body is in pain or illness, the ego uses it as “proof” that you are weak, vulnerable, and abandoned. It says:
- “If my body is not well, I cannot be at peace.”
This lesson gently offers another way:
“The peace of God is shining in me now—*in me*, not in the body.”
You are not asked to deny symptoms or refuse help. You are invited to remember that:
- Your true Self is not sick.
- Your worth is not diminished by the body’s condition.
- Even in pain, there is a quiet place in you that is utterly untouched.
Sometimes, simply resting for a moment in this inner sanctuary can soften fear and bring comfort, even if the body’s condition hasn’t yet changed.
4. Anxiety and daily stress
You feel a wave of anxiety for no clear reason. The mind is racing. The ego says:
- “Something is wrong. You must fix it.”
This lesson invites you to stop trying to fix the feeling and instead look past it:
“The peace of God is shining in me now. This anxiety is like a cloud passing in front of the sun. The sun is not affected.”
You might place a hand on your heart and say:
- “Underneath this fear, I am safe in God.”
- “I don’t need to understand this feeling to let peace be present.”
The goal is not to force the anxiety away, but to remember that it does not define you. You are the light behind it.
III. Overcoming Resistance
This lesson can stir up resistance because it challenges the ego’s identity.
Common doubts and fears
1. *“I don’t feel any peace at all. This must not be true for me.”*
The Course never asks you to feel something on command. It asks you to be willing to acknowledge that peace is there, even if you don’t feel it yet. Feelings will follow understanding, not always immediately.
2. *“If I accept inner peace, won’t I become passive or uncaring?”*
The ego equates peace with indifference. The Holy Spirit’s peace is the opposite: it makes you more loving, more present, more helpful. From peace, your actions become clearer and more truly helpful.
3. *“If I’m peaceful, I might lose my edge, my ambition, my protections.”*
The ego believes fear is useful. It says you need tension to stay safe and productive. Yet most of your mistakes, harsh words, and poor decisions come from fear, not from peace. Peace does not take away your clarity; it sharpens it.
4. *“I don’t deserve this peace.”*
This is the ego’s favorite. It says your past, your flaws, your mistakes disqualify you. But peace is not a reward; it is your inheritance. God gave it to you because of what you are, not what you do.
If these doubts arise, you don’t need to fight them. Just notice them and say gently:
“These are ego thoughts. They are not the truth of me. The peace of God is still shining in me now, unchanged.”
IV. Today’s Practice
Here is a simple way to practice Lesson 188 throughout the day.
1. Morning time (5–15 minutes)
- Sit quietly, eyes closed if you like.
- Take a few slow, gentle breaths.
- Say slowly, with as much sincerity as you can:
“The peace of God is shining in me now.”
- Then add:
“I will be still and let it reach the world.”
- Imagine a soft light in the center of your being—perhaps in your heart or simply in your awareness.
- You don’t need to *see* it clearly; just be open to the idea that it is there.
- Let yourself rest in this thought:
“This light is not mine alone. It is God’s peace, shared with everyone.”
If thoughts come, don’t fight them. Just gently return to:
“The peace of God is shining in me now.”
2. During the day (frequent, brief moments)
Use the main idea as a gentle refrain:
- When you feel stressed:
“The peace of God is shining in me now.”
- Before a conversation or meeting:
“Let me remember the peace in me and in them.”
- When you notice judgment:
“Behind this judgment, the peace of God is shining in us both.”
Even a few seconds of sincere remembrance can shift your inner state.
3. In difficulty or upset
When you feel triggered, hurt, or afraid:
1. Pause, even for one breath.
2. Silently say:
“The peace of God is shining in me now, even if I don’t feel it.”
3. Ask the Holy Spirit:
“Help me see this situation from the light in me, not from fear.”
You are not trying to deny your feelings; you are inviting a higher perspective to join you.
4. Evening reflection
Before sleep, take a moment to look back over the day:
- Recall any times you remembered the lesson, even briefly.
- Be grateful for those moments, however small.
- If there were times you forgot and reacted from fear, simply say:
“I was mistaken, but the peace of God was still shining in me. I choose again now.”
No guilt, no self-attack—just a gentle correction.
V. Comparable ACIM Lessons
This lesson is closely connected with several others:
- **Lesson 34: “I could see peace instead of this.”**
Both lessons teach that peace is available now, and that perception can be shifted from fear to peace.
- **Lesson 66: “My happiness and my function are one.”**
The peace shining in you is your happiness, and sharing it is your function.
- **Lesson 109: “I rest in God.”**
Lesson 188 shows the light in you; Lesson 109 invites you to rest in that light as your safety.
- **Lesson 132: “I loose the world from all I thought it was.”**
As you recognize the peace in you, the world you see—built on fear and conflict—begins to loosen and soften.
- **Lesson 185: “I want the peace of God.”**
Lesson 185 is the decision; Lesson 188 is the recognition that what you truly want is already within you.
VI. Closing Thought
Right now, exactly as you are, without fixing anything, the peace of God is shining in you. You don’t have to create it, deserve it, or understand it. You only need a little willingness to pause, turn inward, and let it be recognized.
Let today be a day of gentle remembering:
“Whatever seems to be happening, the peace of God is shining in me now.”
