Lesson 182: “I will be still an instant and go home.”
To “go home” in A Course in Miracles does not mean to leave your body, your family, or your life. It means to return, in awareness, to the quiet center of your mind where you are already at home in God. This lesson invites you to pause the restless wandering of the ego and remember that your true dwelling place is peace.
The Course tells us that we have never actually left our Home in God. We are dreaming of exile. Lesson 182 is a gentle invitation to wake up a little from that dream.
I. The Core Teaching
What is the ego trying to hide?
The ego is the belief that you are separate—from God, from others, and even from your own Self. It is a sense of being a small, vulnerable “me” in a big, threatening world.
The ego’s survival depends on one thing: your belief that you are not already safe, loved, and whole. If you knew, beyond doubt, that you are eternally held in God, the ego would have no function. So it must keep you busy, distracted, and searching.
In this lesson, the ego is trying to hide a very simple truth:
You are already home in God, and nothing real has ever been lost.
The ego tells you:
- “You are far from home.”
- “You are guilty and must prove your worth.”
- “Peace is somewhere else, sometime later, after you fix yourself and your life.”
- “If you are still, you’ll meet a dark, empty void inside.”
So it keeps you running:
- from one relationship to another,
- from one achievement to another,
- from one worry to another.
It whispers: “Don’t stop. Don’t be still. If you are still, you’ll see how empty you are.”
But the truth is exactly the opposite: when you are still, you discover how full you are.
What is the Holy Spirit revealing?
The Holy Spirit is the memory of God in your mind—the quiet Voice that never left you. In this lesson, the Holy Spirit reveals:
1. *You have a true Home, and you know it.*
There is a place in your mind that feels utterly familiar, like a deep sigh of relief. You may have touched it in moments of beauty, love, or quiet. That is the “home” this lesson speaks of.
2. *You are not the wanderer you think you are.*
The Course says we are like a child who wandered in a dream and believes he is lost, while in reality he is safe in his Father’s arms. The Holy Spirit shows you that your wandering is only in imagination.
3. *Your true Self is not the anxious, guilty self you think you are.*
Beneath all your stories, there is a Self that is calm, innocent, and unafraid. This Self is not something you have to build; it is what you already are.
4. *You can “go home” now, in an instant.*
You don’t need to fix your life first. You don’t need to become “more spiritual.” You only need a little willingness to be still and let the memory of God’s Love rise in your mind.
The Holy Spirit is saying:
“Come home for just an instant. Rest. You don’t have to carry this burden alone. You never did.”
II. Applied to Daily Life
1. Relationships
Suppose you feel hurt by someone’s words. The ego says:
- “They don’t respect you.”
- “You must defend yourself.”
- “You are alone against them.”
You feel the familiar tightening: anger, fear, or sadness.
To apply Lesson 182, you pause—even for a few seconds—and say inwardly:
- “I will be still an instant and go home.”
You let yourself step back from the story. You don’t deny your feelings, but you don’t feed them either. You turn toward that quiet place inside and remember:
- “I am not this wounded self right now. I am still as God created me. I am safe in Him.”
From that inner “home,” you might:
- speak more gently,
- listen instead of attack,
- or simply choose not to continue the argument.
The situation may or may not change immediately, but you are less lost in it. You are remembering where you truly live.
2. Work and busyness
At work, you might feel overwhelmed:
- deadlines,
- pressure,
- fear of failure.
The ego insists:
- “If you stop and rest, you’ll fall behind.”
- “You are your performance.”
In the middle of your busy day, you can close your eyes for a moment at your desk, in a restroom, or in your car and say:
- “I will be still an instant and go home.”
You let your shoulders drop. You breathe. You remember:
- “My worth is not measured by this job. I am held in God. I am not alone.”
From that inner home, you often find:
- clearer thinking,
- less panic,
- more gentle choices about what truly needs to be done.
3. Illness and pain
When the body is sick or in pain, the ego uses it to prove:
- “You are weak.”
- “You are a body, and the body is all you are.”
Lesson 182 does not ask you to deny the body’s condition or refuse help. It invites you to remember that you are not limited to the body.
Lying in bed, or sitting in a waiting room, you can say:
- “I will be still an instant and go home.”
You allow your awareness to sink beneath the surface sensations into a quiet place where you are not a body, but a mind resting in God. Even if the pain remains, you may feel:
- less fear,
- a sense of being held,
- a gentle trust that you are not abandoned.
4. Anxiety and daily stress
When anxiety rises—about money, family, the future—the ego screams:
- “You must solve this now!”
- “There is no safety for you.”
This lesson suggests something radical:
You can step out of the storm for an instant.
You can say:
- “I will be still an instant and go home.”
You don’t have to solve everything in that moment. You simply allow yourself to touch the place in you that is not anxious. It is always there, but usually covered by noise. Even a few seconds of this can soften the anxiety and open you to guidance about what to do next.
III. Overcoming Resistance
Why might this lesson be difficult?
1. *Fear of inner emptiness*
Many fear that if they are still, they will find nothing inside—no comfort, no God, just emptiness. The ego tells you, “There is nothing there. Stay busy.”
In truth, the “emptiness” you fear is only the quiet before you recognize the Presence that has always been with you.
2. *Attachment to the identity of a wanderer*
You may be deeply attached to your story:
- “I am the one who struggles.”
- “I am the one who has been hurt.”
- “I am the one trying to find my way.”
To accept that you are already home in God can feel like losing your familiar identity. The Course gently says: you are not losing anything real. You are laying down a burden you never needed to carry.
3. *Guilt and unworthiness*
You may think:
- “I don’t deserve to go home.”
- “I’ve made too many mistakes.”
The ego insists that God is far away and perhaps angry. This lesson contradicts that completely. Your Home in God is not a reward; it is your nature. You cannot lose it.
4. *Fear of losing control*
Being still and going home means letting go of your constant mental control—your planning, defending, and judging. That can feel unsafe.
Yet what you are really doing is letting a wiser part of your mind—the Holy Spirit—take the lead.
Gently addressing doubt
If you feel resistance, you can say:
- “I am afraid to be still, but I am willing to try for just an instant.”
- “Holy Spirit, hold my hand as I go home.”
You are not asked to force belief. You are asked only for a little willingness. The Holy Spirit does the rest.
IV. Today’s Practice: Step-by-Step
Here is a simple way to practice Lesson 182 today.
Formal practice (morning and evening, or whenever you can)
1. *Find a quiet place.*
Sit comfortably. Close your eyes.
2. *Set your intention.*
Silently say:
“I will be still an instant and go home.
I am willing to remember where I truly live.”
3. *Relax the body.*
Let your muscles soften. Notice any tension and gently let it go, without forcing.
4. *Turn inward.*
Imagine you are walking away from all your concerns—like stepping out of a noisy room and into a quiet garden. You leave behind:
- roles,
- problems,
- plans,
- grievances.
5. *Repeat the idea slowly.*
“I will be still an instant and go home.”
Let the words sink in. Feel the invitation in them.
6. *Rest in quiet.*
You are not trying to “see” anything special. You are simply allowing yourself to rest in a sense of:
- familiarity,
- safety,
- belonging.
If thoughts come, notice them and gently return to:
“I will be still an instant and go home.”
7. *Let the Holy Spirit lead.*
If a feeling of peace, warmth, or gentle presence arises, let yourself receive it. If nothing seems to happen, trust that the practice is still working at a level you may not yet see.
8. *Close with gratitude.*
After 10–15 minutes (or whatever you can manage), say:
“Thank you. I have touched my home, even if I do not yet recognize it fully.”
Short practice throughout the day
Several times today—especially when upset, rushed, or worried—pause for a few seconds and say inwardly:
- “I will be still an instant and go home.”
You can do this:
- in a meeting,
- in traffic,
- in a conversation,
- while washing dishes.
Let it be a tiny “return” to your true Home, again and again.
V. Comparable ACIM Lessons
Lesson 182 is closely related to several other lessons:
- **Lesson 109: “I rest in God.”**
Both emphasize that your safety and rest are found in God, not in the world’s conditions.
- **Lesson 110: “I am as God created me.”**
To “go home” is to remember your unchanged Self as God created you—innocent and whole.
- **Lesson 41: “God goes with me wherever I go.”**
This reminds you that your Home is not a place in the world; it is a Presence that never leaves you.
- **Lesson 132: “The world I see holds nothing that I want.”**
This prepares you to stop seeking your home in external things and turn inward instead.
- **Lesson 200: “There is no peace except the peace of God.”**
Both lessons point to a peace that is not of this world, found only by turning to the truth within.
VI. Closing Thought
You have not really left your Home in God. You are only dreaming of exile. Today, each time you say, “I will be still an instant and go home,” you open a small window in that dream, and the light of your true Home shines through.
Even if you feel nothing, even if your mind is noisy, your willingness is enough. You are being gently led back to the place you never truly left.
Rest for an instant today. Your Home is waiting in the quiet of your own heart.
