Lesson 177 is a review lesson, combining two earlier ideas:
- “God is but Love, and therefore so am I.”
- “There is no death. The Son of God is free.”
- “Now are we one with Him Who is our Source.”
The Course uses this review to sink us more deeply into one central truth:
You are not what you think you are. You are not a body, not a personality, not a story of struggle and loss. You are Love, because you were created by Love. And nothing real can ever threaten what you truly are.
I. The Core Teaching
1. “God is but Love, and therefore so am I.”
This is the foundation. The Course says God is pure Love—without opposite, without attack, without fear. If God is only Love, and you are created by God, then your true nature must be that same Love.
The ego’s entire identity depends on denying this. It whispers:
- “You are guilty.”
- “You are separate.”
- “You are vulnerable and alone.”
- “You are a body, and bodies die.”
The ego wants you to believe you are the opposite of Love: fearful, lacking, unworthy, and threatened. Why? Because if you remembered you are Love, the ego would disappear. It exists only as a mistaken thought.
The Holy Spirit, on the other hand, gently keeps repeating:
- “You are innocent.”
- “You are joined with all your brothers.”
- “You are safe in God.”
- “You are Spirit, and Spirit cannot die.”
This lesson invites you to let this truth be your identity today:
“I am as God created me: Love, and nothing else.”
2. “There is no death. The Son of God is free.”
This does not mean bodies do not seem to die in this world. They do. But the Course is talking about you as Spirit, not as a body.
The ego uses death as its final proof:
“See? You are a body. Bodies die. Therefore you are temporary, fragile, and doomed.”
But the Holy Spirit says:
“What God creates is eternal. What God creates cannot be destroyed. You are God’s creation, not your body’s creation.”
So “There is no death” means:
- Your true Self cannot be harmed.
- Your essence cannot be diminished by time, illness, or loss.
- Every seeming ending here is only a change in form, never a loss of Love.
The “Son of God” is not a single person; it is the one shared Self behind all appearances. That Self is free—free from guilt, free from fear, free from the laws of the world. You are that Self.
3. “Now are we one with Him Who is our Source.”
This is not a promise for the future; it is a statement of what is true now. You are not on a long journey to reach God someday. You are already in God. You could not leave your Source, any more than a ray of light can leave the sun and become something else.
The ego hides this by focusing your attention on time:
- “Someday I’ll be healed.”
- “One day I’ll be holy.”
- “Maybe after many lifetimes I’ll be worthy.”
The Holy Spirit says:
- “You are whole now.”
- “You are holy now.”
- “You are with God now.”
This lesson is an invitation to stop postponing your acceptance of what is already true.
II. Applied to Daily Life
Let’s bring these ideas into ordinary situations.
1. Relationships
When someone criticizes you, leaves you, or misunderstands you, the ego screams:
- “I’m not loved.”
- “I’m not enough.”
- “I’ve been rejected.”
From that place, we attack back, withdraw, or sink into shame.
But from this lesson’s perspective, you pause and remember:
- “God is but Love, and therefore so am I.”
- “Now are we one with Him Who is our Source.”
You might say inwardly:
“My worth is not decided by this person’s opinion or behavior.
I remain as God created me—Love.
This person, too, is Love, even if they’ve forgotten.”
Then your response softens. You might still set boundaries, but without hatred. You might speak honestly, but without the need to punish. You begin to see both of you as scared minds, not as guilty enemies.
2. Work and Money
At work, you may fear failure, judgment, or not having enough. The ego says:
- “Your value is your performance.”
- “You must compete or you’ll lose.”
- “You are at the mercy of the world.”
This lesson invites a different inner stance:
“God is but Love, and therefore so am I.
My value is established by God, not by my job.
I can bring Love into this situation, and that is success.”
You still do your tasks, but with less anxiety. You remember that your peace does not depend on outcomes. If something goes “wrong,” you can say:
“There is no death. The Son of God is free.
Nothing real has been harmed. Only an image, a plan, a form has shifted.
I remain safe in God.”
This loosens the tight grip of fear around work and money.
3. Illness and the Body
When the body is sick or in pain, the ego uses it as proof:
- “You are a body.”
- “You are weak.”
- “You are at the mercy of physical laws.”
The Course never asks you to deny symptoms or neglect care. It asks you to question what you think you are.
In the midst of illness, you might gently affirm:
“I am not this body. I am Spirit, created by Love.
This body may feel pain, but my Self remains untouched.
There is no death. The Son of God is free.”
You still take medicine, see doctors, and rest. But you do so from a place of inner safety, not panic. You allow the Holy Spirit to use this situation to deepen your trust, rather than to strengthen fear.
4. Anxiety and Daily Stress
When anxiety rises—about the future, relationships, money, health—the ego says:
- “You are alone.”
- “You must control everything.”
- “Disaster is coming.”
Pause and remember:
“Now are we one with Him Who is our Source.”
“Now” means this very moment, even with racing thoughts and tight muscles. You can say:
“I feel afraid, but I am not this fear.
I am still as God created me.
God is but Love, and therefore so am I.”
You don’t have to force the fear away. Just let this truth sit beside it, like a quiet friend who holds your hand in the dark. Over time, the fear loses its authority.
III. Overcoming Resistance
Why might this lesson feel difficult?
1. *It challenges your identity.*
The ego has invested heavily in the belief: “I am a separate, vulnerable self.” To hear “You are eternal Love” can feel unreal or even threatening. The ego fears its own end and calls it “your” end.
2. *It seems to deny what your eyes see.*
You see bodies aging, people dying, relationships ending. The mind says, “How can there be no death?” The Course is not denying your perception; it is questioning the interpretation you give it. It’s saying: “What you see is not the whole story.”
3. *It asks for trust.*
To accept “There is no death” and “Now are we one with Him” requires a willingness to trust something beyond your usual thinking. That can feel like stepping off a cliff.
Be gentle with yourself. You are not asked to force belief. You are only asked to be willing to question the ego’s story:
- “What if I am more than this body?”
- “What if my true Self cannot be harmed?”
- “What if Love is actually what I am?”
Doubt is not a sin; it is simply a call for deeper understanding. Bring your doubts to the Holy Spirit:
“I don’t fully believe this yet.
Help me see what You see.
I am willing to be shown.”
That willingness is enough.
IV. Today’s Practice (Step-by-Step)
Lesson 177 uses the review format. The central line is repeated with each idea:
*“God is but Love, and therefore so am I.”*
And then:
- “There is no death. The Son of God is free.”
- “Now are we one with Him Who is our Source.”
Here is a simple way to practice today:
1. Morning (5–10 minutes)
1. Sit quietly, close your eyes, and take a few gentle breaths.
2. Say slowly, with as much sincerity as you can:
“God is but Love, and therefore so am I.”
3. Pause, feel the words. You don’t have to “make” them true; just let them be spoken in your mind.
4. Then add:
“There is no death. The Son of God is free.”
“God is but Love, and therefore so am I.”
5. Sit a moment in silence, letting these ideas wash over you.
2. Midday (3–5 minutes)
Repeat the same structure, but now emphasize the second idea:
1. Begin:
“God is but Love, and therefore so am I.”
2. Then:
“Now are we one with Him Who is our Source.”
“God is but Love, and therefore so am I.”
3. Rest a few moments in quiet.
3. Hourly Remembrance (short)
On the hour, or as often as you remember, pause briefly and say—silently if needed:
“God is but Love, and therefore so am I.”
If you have a moment more, add one of the two ideas, depending on what you need:
- If you feel fear, say:
“There is no death. The Son of God is free.
God is but Love, and therefore so am I.”
- If you feel lonely or separate, say:
“Now are we one with Him Who is our Source.
God is but Love, and therefore so am I.”
4. In Difficult Moments
Whenever you feel upset, anxious, angry, or sad, use the lesson as a gentle interruption:
1. Notice: “I am not at peace.”
2. Silently say:
“God is but Love, and therefore so am I.”
3. Then choose whichever of the two ideas speaks most to your need in that moment.
4. Don’t demand instant peace. Just offer your mind this alternative and be willing to let it work in you.
5. Evening (5–10 minutes)
Before sleep, repeat the morning practice. Let the last thought of your day be:
“God is but Love, and therefore so am I.”
You are inviting your sleeping mind to rest in this truth.
V. Comparable ACIM Lessons
Several lessons are closely related:
- **Lesson 132: “I loose the world from all I thought it was.”**
This loosens your grip on the belief that the world’s appearances (including death) define reality.
- **Lesson 163: “There is no death. The Son of God is free.”**
The original statement of one of today’s ideas, going deeply into the unreality of death as the ego’s central idol.
- **Lesson 199: “I am not a body. I am free.”**
This directly supports the idea that death cannot touch what you truly are.
- **Lesson 94: “I am as God created me.”**
A core identity lesson, echoing “God is but Love, and therefore so am I.”
- **Lesson 75: “The light has come.”**
Affirms that the separation is already undone and we are already one with our Source.
All of these lessons work together to gently dismantle the belief that you are a separate, vulnerable self in a dangerous world, and to restore the memory that you are eternal Love.
VI. Closing Thought
Let today be a day of quiet remembering. You do not have to fix yourself or the world. You are only asked to let a deeper truth touch your mind:
God is but Love, and therefore so are you.
There is no death. The Son of God is free.
Now are you one with Him Who is your Source.
Rest in that, as often as you can, and let it carry you gently through the day.
