Lesson 175 is a review lesson that asks us to re-affirm:
- “God is but Love, and therefore so am I.”
- “Into His Presence would I enter now.”
- “Today I learn to give as I receive.”
Everything in this lesson rests on that central statement:
*“God is but Love, and therefore so am I.”*
This is the key that unlocks the other two ideas. If God is only Love—nothing else, no anger, no punishment, no loss—then your true Self, created by God, must also be only Love. The lesson is gently undoing every belief you hold that says, “I am something else.”
The Core Teaching
What the ego is trying to hide
The ego’s entire strategy is to convince you that:
- You are separate from God.
- You are guilty and must fear punishment.
- You are a body, vulnerable and alone.
- Love is unreliable, conditional, and sometimes dangerous.
If you deeply accepted “God is but Love, and therefore so am I,” the ego would disappear. So it hides this truth under layers of:
- Self-criticism and shame
- Blame and judgment of others
- Anxiety about the future
- Regret about the past
- Constant comparisons: better/worse, worthy/unworthy
The ego wants you to believe that you are your history, your mistakes, your wounds, your roles, your body. It whispers: “You are not safe. You are not enough. You are not lovable as you are.”
This lesson exposes that as a lie. It says:
You are not the story of separation you tell yourself.
You are the Love of God, still as He created you.
What the Holy Spirit is revealing
The Holy Spirit is the Voice in your mind that remembers the truth for you. In this lesson, He is revealing:
1. *Your Identity*
You are not a frightened, guilty self trying to earn love. You are Love itself, extending from God. You cannot be what God is not. If He is only Love, then you are only Love.
2. *The Present Moment as the Doorway*
“Into His Presence would I enter now.”
God’s Presence is not in the past or future. It is here, now, behind your thoughts of fear and judgment. The Holy Spirit invites you to step past those thoughts and rest in the quiet center of your mind, where God’s Love is already shining.
3. *The Law of Giving and Receiving*
“Today I learn to give as I receive.”
In the world, giving seems to mean losing something. In truth, what you give in your mind—love, forgiveness, blessing—you keep, because mind is one. When you give love, you experience yourself as love. When you withhold, you experience yourself as lacking.
The Holy Spirit is gently teaching you that:
- You are safe in God.
- You are innocent in truth.
- You are joined with every brother and sister.
- You lose nothing by loving; you only remember who you are.
Applied to Daily Life
Let’s bring this into the places where it matters most: your relationships, your work, your body, and your daily worries.
Relationships
Suppose someone close to you criticizes you. The ego reacts:
- “They don’t respect me.”
- “I have to defend myself.”
- “I’m hurt; they’re wrong.”
The lesson invites a different inner response:
1. Pause and remember:
“God is but Love, and therefore so am I.”
2. Ask within:
“Into His Presence would I enter now.”
This means: “Let me see this from Love, not from fear.”
3. Then:
“Today I learn to give as I receive.”
You silently offer them what you most want: understanding, patience, innocence.
You might still speak up, set a boundary, or clarify something—but you do it from a quieter place, not from attack. You are practicing seeing both of you as more than your egos: as the same Love, temporarily confused.
Work and Responsibilities
At work, you may feel pressure, competition, or fear of failure. The ego says:
- “My worth depends on my performance.”
- “I must protect my position.”
- “Others are rivals.”
Bring the lesson in:
- Before a meeting, repeat quietly:
“God is but Love, and therefore so am I.”
“Into His Presence would I enter now.”
“Today I learn to give as I receive.”
Ask: “How can I bring Love into this situation?”
Maybe you listen more deeply, speak more kindly, or silently bless your colleagues. You are no longer working to prove your worth, but allowing your true worth—Love—to express itself through you.
Illness and the Body
When the body is in pain or illness arises, the ego uses it to “prove” vulnerability and separation. It says:
- “I am this body.”
- “I am weak and at the mercy of the world.”
The Course never asks you to deny symptoms. It asks you to question the meaning you give them.
While caring for the body in practical ways, you can say:
- “God is but Love, and therefore so am I. My reality is not this pain.”
- “Into His Presence would I enter now. Let me remember I am Spirit, held in Love.”
- “Today I learn to give as I receive. Even in this, I can offer comfort, patience, and gentleness—to myself and others.”
You begin to see that nothing can touch what you really are. The body may be uncomfortable, but your Self remains untouched, safe in God.
Anxiety and Daily Stress
When anxiety rises—about money, family, future—the ego is shouting, “You are alone and unprotected.”
Use the lesson as a gentle interruption:
1. Notice the tension.
2. Breathe and repeat slowly:
“God is but Love, and therefore so am I.”
3. Imagine stepping into a quiet inner room:
“Into His Presence would I enter now.”
4. Ask: “What would Love have me give in this moment?”
Perhaps it’s a kind word, a small act of helpfulness, or simply a more forgiving thought.
You are retraining your mind to look to Love for guidance, not fear.
Overcoming Resistance
This lesson can feel difficult because it challenges your most cherished self-concepts.
Common forms of resistance
1. *“I don’t feel like love.”*
You may feel angry, depressed, or numb. The Course is not asking you to pretend you feel loving. It is reminding you of what you are beneath all feelings and moods. Feelings change; your reality does not.
2. *“I’ve done too many wrong things.”*
Guilt makes this lesson feel impossible. The ego says, “Love might be true for others, but not for me.”
The lesson says: God is only Love. He cannot create something unlovable or guilty. Your mistakes are calls for love, not proof against it.
3. *Fear of losing individuality*
Part of you may fear that if you accept you are only Love, you will lose your uniqueness or your defenses. The ego thinks: “If I don’t protect myself, I’ll be hurt.”
The Holy Spirit answers: “Your safety lies in remembering you are joined, not separate. Love is your protection, not your weakness.”
4. *Doubt about God*
If your image of God is harsh or punishing, “God is but Love” can feel unbelievable. This lesson is slowly replacing that image. You don’t have to force belief; just be willing to question the old picture and let a gentler one in.
Be kind with yourself. Resistance is just fear. You are not wrong for feeling it. You are simply being invited to let it be healed.
Today’s Practice
Here is a simple way to practice Lesson 175 today.
1. Morning (5–10 minutes)
- Sit quietly, close your eyes if you can.
- Slowly repeat:
“God is but Love, and therefore so am I.”
- Let the words sink in. Don’t argue with them; just let them be there.
- Then add:
“Into His Presence would I enter now.”
“Today I learn to give as I receive.”
- Imagine yourself stepping into a gentle light within your mind. Let it hold you.
- End by saying again:
“God is but Love, and therefore so am I.”
2. Hourly Remembrance (brief)
Each hour, or as often as you remember:
- Pause for a few breaths.
- Silently repeat:
“God is but Love, and therefore so am I.”
- Then choose one of the ideas:
- “Into His Presence would I enter now.”
- “Today I learn to give as I receive.”
- Ask: “How can I remember this in what I’m doing right now?”
3. In Moments of Upset
Whenever you feel irritated, anxious, or hurt:
1. Acknowledge the feeling without judgment.
2. Say inwardly:
“I am feeling afraid/angry/sad, but God is but Love, and therefore so am I.”
3. Ask:
“Into His Presence would I enter now—how would Love see this?”
4. If you can, offer a small act of giving: a forgiving thought, a softening of your tone, a willingness to see innocence.
4. Evening (5 minutes)
Before sleep:
- Review your day gently.
- Where did you remember Love? Where did you forget?
- In both cases, say:
“God is but Love, and therefore so am I.”
- Offer the day to the Holy Spirit to be reinterpreted in Love.
Comparable ACIM Lessons
Several lessons echo and support Lesson 175:
- **Lesson 67: “Love created me like Itself.”**
Directly affirms your identity as Love.
- **Lesson 58 (Review): “My holiness envelops everything I see.”**
Shows how your true nature blesses the world.
- **Lesson 105: “God’s peace and joy are mine.”**
Emphasizes that your inheritance is peace and joy, not fear and guilt.
- **Lesson 126: “All that I give is given to myself.”**
Deepens the idea that giving and receiving are the same.
- **Lesson 157: “Into His Presence would I enter now.”**
The original lesson for one of today’s review ideas, focusing on entering the holy instant.
All of these lessons work together to undo the belief in separation and restore the memory of your shared Identity in God.
Closing Thought
Let today be gentle. You are not trying to become Love; you are allowing yourself to remember that you already are. Every time you pause and whisper, “God is but Love, and therefore so am I,” a little more of the fear loosens and falls away.
You are walking back into a Home you never truly left, guided by a Love that has never stopped holding you.
