Lesson 156: “I walk with God in perfect holiness.”
To let these words in is to let your whole self-image be gently undone. This lesson is not trying to make you special or spiritually superior. It is revealing that what you are has never been what you think you are. It is an invitation to remember a holiness that is not earned, not fragile, and not personal in the ego’s sense—but shared, universal, and unchangeable.
I. The Core Teaching
1. What “perfect holiness” really means
In the Course, “holiness” does not mean moral purity, religious piety, or flawless behavior. It means *wholeness*—the recognition that you are as God created you: untouched by guilt, fear, or separation.
“Perfect holiness” is the state of mind that knows:
- I am not a separate, guilty self.
- I am not a body, though I temporarily experience one.
- I share the same one Self with all my brothers and sisters.
- Nothing real can be threatened, and nothing unreal exists.
When the lesson says, “I walk with God in perfect holiness,” it is describing a *fact of being*, not a future goal. You walk with God because you cannot be apart from Him. You are in perfect holiness because your true Self has never changed, no matter what you believe about yourself.
2. What the ego is trying to hide
The ego’s entire strategy is to keep you from discovering this fact. If you knew your perfect holiness, the ego would disappear, because it is only a belief in lack, guilt, and separation.
The ego hides:
1. *Your innocence.*
It insists you are guilty—of past mistakes, of not being enough, of failing others, of failing God. It says you must atone through suffering, self-attack, or endless self-improvement.
2. *Your unity with everyone.*
It tells you that you are separate, vulnerable, and competing for love, safety, and worth. It needs you to see others as different, better, worse, dangerous, or special.
3. *Your safety in God.*
It tells you you’re at the mercy of the body, the world, and time. It wants you to believe that your life is fragile and your peace depends on external conditions.
4. *The present moment as the gateway to God.*
The ego lives on regret (past) and anxiety (future). If you rest fully in the present, its stories lose power.
The ego’s greatest fear is that you will look within and find not darkness, but *light*. So it whispers: “Don’t look too deeply. You won’t like what you find.” This is the lie that keeps guilt in place.
3. What the Holy Spirit is revealing
The Holy Spirit’s message in this lesson is simple and constant:
“You are still as God created you.”
He reveals:
- Beneath every fear, there is only a call for love.
- Beneath every attack, there is only confusion and pain.
- Beneath every mask you wear, there is a radiant, innocent Self.
The Holy Spirit is not trying to make you holy; He is trying to help you *remember* that you already are. Each time you are willing to see yourself or another as more than a body, more than a personality, more than a story, you are letting Him show you the holiness that has been there all along.
II. Applied to Daily Life
Let’s bring “I walk with God in perfect holiness” into very ordinary situations.
1. Relationships
*Scenario:* Someone criticizes you, misunderstands you, or withdraws from you.
*Ego’s story:*
“I’m not good enough. They don’t respect me. I must defend myself or shut down.”
*Holy Spirit’s reinterpretation:*
“I walk with God in perfect holiness, and so do they. This moment is not about blame; it is about healing. Their words are either love or a call for love.”
*Practice in the moment:*
- Pause and silently say: *“I walk with God in perfect holiness, and so does my brother.”*
- Ask: *“Holy Spirit, how would You have me see this person?”*
- Notice how seeing them as holy softens your urge to attack or defend.
You may still speak firmly or set boundaries, but the inner tone shifts from attack to kindness.
2. Work and responsibilities
*Scenario:* Pressure at work, deadlines, feeling inadequate or overwhelmed.
*Ego’s story:*
“My worth depends on my performance. If I fail, I am less.”
*Holy Spirit’s reinterpretation:*
“My worth is established by God. I walk with Him in perfect holiness, even while I answer emails or attend meetings. My function is to extend peace, not to prove my value.”
*Practice in the moment:*
- Before a task or meeting, pause:
“I walk with God in perfect holiness into this situation. Let me remember who I am and who everyone else is.”
- Let your work become a classroom where you practice seeing yourself and others as more than roles and results.
3. Illness and pain
*Scenario:* You or someone you love is sick, in pain, or facing a diagnosis.
*Ego’s story:*
“I am a body, and my body is weak, vulnerable, and doomed. God has abandoned me, or I have failed spiritually.”
*Holy Spirit’s reinterpretation:*
“I walk with God in perfect holiness that is not of the body. The body can seem to suffer, but my Self remains untouched. I am not being punished. I am still loved.”
This does not deny the experience of pain; it gently re-locates your identity. You can still seek help, take medicine, and care for the body, while remembering: “This is not what I am.”
*Practice in the moment:*
- Place a gentle hand on your heart and say:
“I walk with God in perfect holiness. Nothing can change what I am in truth.”
- Ask: *“Holy Spirit, how can this situation be used for healing rather than fear?”*
4. Anxiety and daily stress
*Scenario:* Worry about money, future, family, or world events.
*Ego’s story:*
“I am alone. I must control everything. Disaster is always possible.”
*Holy Spirit’s reinterpretation:*
“I walk with God in perfect holiness now. The future is not my concern; my only task is to choose love in this moment. I am carried.”
*Practice in the moment:*
- When anxiety spikes, breathe and repeat slowly:
“I walk with God… in perfect holiness… right now.”
- Let the words be a soft anchor, not a rigid command.
III. Overcoming Resistance
1. Why this lesson may feel difficult
You might notice inner objections:
- “I don’t feel holy.”
- “Look at what I’ve done. How could I be perfectly holy?”
- “If I believe I’m holy, won’t I excuse my mistakes?”
- “This sounds arrogant or delusional.”
These are natural ego reactions. The ego equates holiness with specialness, and it hears this lesson as: “I’m better than others.” But the Course means the opposite: *everyone shares the same holiness.* No one is above or below.
The ego also fears that if you accept your holiness, you will no longer listen to its guilt-based control system. It worries you’ll become irresponsible or careless. In truth, when you remember your holiness, you become *more* loving, more honest, and more gentle—because you no longer need to defend a fragile self.
2. Gently addressing doubt and fear
If you feel resistance, you don’t have to force belief. You can say:
- “I don’t fully believe this yet, but I am willing to consider that I might be more than I think.”
- “Holy Spirit, help me see why I’m afraid of being innocent.”
- “Show me one small way today that I walk with God.”
The Course never asks you to lie to yourself. It asks for *willingness*, not perfection. You can bring your doubts into the light:
“I feel unworthy of this lesson. Please reinterpret this feeling for me.”
Every time you notice resistance and choose even a tiny bit of willingness, you are walking with God.
IV. Today’s Practice
Here is a simple way to practice Lesson 156 throughout the day.
1. Morning quiet time (5–15 minutes)
1. Sit comfortably, close your eyes.
2. Slowly repeat:
“I walk with God in perfect holiness.”
Let the words sink in, not as a demand, but as a gentle reminder.
3. Imagine you are walking along a quiet path with a loving Presence beside you.
This Presence is not separate from you; it is your own true Self.
4. Say inwardly:
- “You go with me wherever I go.”
- “I am not alone.”
- “Let me see today through Your eyes.”
5. Rest in stillness for a few moments, letting any feelings arise—peace, resistance, doubt—and offer them all to this Presence.
2. Hourly (or frequent) reminders
As often as you remember, pause briefly and say:
- *“I walk with God in perfect holiness.”*
or
- *“I am not alone. God goes with me.”*
You might link this to:
- Every time you check your phone.
- Before starting a new task.
- When you feel a wave of emotion.
3. Using the lesson in specific situations
When something upsets you:
1. Notice the upset and pause.
2. Silently say:
“I walk with God in perfect holiness. Let me see this as You see it.”
3. Ask:
“What would it mean here if I truly walked with God?”
Maybe it means pausing before reacting, speaking gently, or simply not believing the fearful story.
4. Evening reflection
Before sleep, review your day:
- Where did you remember you walk with God?
- Where did you forget?
There is no blame here, only learning. You might say:
- “In all of it, I walked with God in perfect holiness, even when I forgot. Help me remember more clearly tomorrow.”
V. Comparable ACIM Lessons
This lesson is closely related to several others:
- **Lesson 41: “God goes with me wherever I go.”**
Establishes the same idea of constant companionship and safety.
- **Lesson 93: “Light and joy and peace abide in me.”**
Emphasizes that your true nature is already radiant and untouched by guilt.
- **Lesson 94: “I am as God created me.”**
Repeats the central identity statement that underlies “perfect holiness.”
- **Lesson 110: “I am as God created me.”** (again, for emphasis)
The Course returns to this because it is the foundation of all healing.
- **Lesson 135: “If I defend myself I am attacked.”**
Shows how forgetting your holiness leads to constant defense and fear.
All of these lessons are different doorways into the same truth: you are not the small, separate self you think you are. You are the holy Son of God, still as He created you.
VI. Closing Thought
Let these words be a soft blanket, not a sharp command:
You walk with God in perfect holiness.
You do not have to feel it to make it true. You are only asked to be a little willing to remember. Each gentle repetition of this idea today is like opening a window in a darkened room. The light was always there. You are simply letting it in.
