Lesson 148 is a review lesson in A Course in Miracles. It reviews two key ideas:

1. *“If I defend myself I am attacked.”*

2. *“Sickness is a defense against the truth.”*

These two ideas are deeply connected. Both are about *defense*—and in ACIM, defense always means the ego is trying to protect itself from Love.

Let’s explore what that really means.

I. The Core Teaching

1. What is the ego trying to hide?

The ego’s basic story is:

“You are separate, vulnerable, guilty, and at risk. You must protect yourself.”

To keep this story alive, the ego needs:

  • A sense of danger
  • A sense of attack
  • A sense of being a body, limited and fragile

So the ego uses *defense as its main tool. The Course is very radical here: it says that whenever you defend yourself—whether with words, anger, withdrawal, physical tension, or even sickness—you are actually attacking yourself*. Why? Because you are silently agreeing with the ego’s story:

  • “I am weak.”
  • “I am in danger.”
  • “I am guilty and must protect myself.”

This is what the first idea means:

*“If I defend myself I am attacked.”*

The very act of defending yourself confirms that you believe you are under threat. That belief is the attack. It attacks your peace, your innocence, and your awareness of your true Self.

The second idea goes even deeper:

*“Sickness is a defense against the truth.”*

The ego uses sickness (physical or emotional) as a way to say:

  • “Look, I’m just a body. I’m not spirit.”
  • “I’m not powerful; I’m a victim of the world.”
  • “My suffering proves I’m separate and alone.”

On a deep, unconscious level, the ego uses sickness to *prove* that the body is real and that the world has power over you. It is a defense against the truth that:

  • You are spirit, not a body.
  • You are safe in God.
  • Nothing real can be threatened.

So the ego is hiding:

  • Your **invulnerability** as spirit
  • Your **innocence**
  • Your **oneness** with God and all creation

It does this by convincing you that you are small, fragile, and must constantly defend yourself.

2. What is the Holy Spirit revealing?

The Holy Spirit’s message is the exact opposite:

  • You are **not** a body.
  • You are **not** weak.
  • You are **not** guilty.
  • You are **not** in danger.

The Holy Spirit gently reveals that:

  • Your true Self cannot be attacked.
  • Your peace is not dependent on the world.
  • Your innocence is guaranteed by God, not by your behavior.

So when the Course says, “If I defend myself I am attacked,” the Holy Spirit is inviting you to see:

“If I trust in God’s Love, I need no defense.
And without defense, I cannot be attacked,
because attack is only a belief in my own vulnerability.”

And when it says, “Sickness is a defense against the truth,” the Holy Spirit is not blaming you for being sick. Instead, He is saying:

“There is a part of your mind that is afraid of how powerful, loved, and safe you truly are.
That fear can show up as sickness.
But I can use even this to lead you back to the truth.”

The Holy Spirit reveals:

  • Your **wholeness** behind appearances of sickness
  • Your **safety** behind appearances of threat
  • Your **peace** behind appearances of conflict

II. Applied to Daily Life

Let’s bring this into everyday situations.

1. Relationships

Imagine someone criticizes you. The ego quickly says:

  • “Defend yourself.”
  • “Prove you’re right.”
  • “Attack back or withdraw.”

You feel tension, anger, or hurt. You defend with words or silence. Inside, you feel attacked.

From the Course’s perspective, the real “attack” is not the other person’s words. It is your belief:

  • “I can be diminished by what they think.”
  • “My worth is at risk.”

That belief is the attack on your peace.

A Holy Spirit-inspired response might look like:

  • Pause.
  • Breathe.
  • Silently say: *“If I defend myself I am attacked. My worth is not on trial here.”*
  • Ask: *“Holy Spirit, help me see this differently.”*

You might still speak up, set boundaries, or clarify something—but without the inner sense of threat. The form of your words may be similar, but the *inner content* is different: it comes from peace, not fear.

2. Work and career

At work, you might feel:

  • “I need to constantly prove myself.”
  • “If I make a mistake, I’ll be judged or rejected.”

This leads to stress, overwork, and defensiveness. You may react strongly to feedback, feel easily threatened, or secretly resent others’ success.

Here, the ego is using *defense* to keep you believing:

  • “My value comes from performance.”
  • “I’m vulnerable to others’ opinions.”

Practicing this lesson, you might say:

  • *“If I defend myself I am attacked. My real worth is given by God, not my job.”*
  • *“Holy Spirit, show me how to work from peace, not fear.”*

You can still be responsible, diligent, and professional, but with less anxiety. You begin to see that your job is a classroom for learning trust, not a courtroom where your worth is judged.

3. Illness and pain

When the body is sick or in pain, the ego says:

  • “You are your body.”
  • “You are helpless.”
  • “You are being punished or singled out.”

The Course’s statement, “Sickness is a defense against the truth,” does *not* mean:

  • You are bad for being sick.
  • You consciously chose this.

It means that, at a deep level, the mind uses sickness to reinforce the belief:

  • “I am a body, and the body is vulnerable.”

The Holy Spirit’s reinterpretation is:

  • “You are still spirit, even while the body appears sick.”
  • “Your true Self is untouched by this.”
  • “I can use this situation to deepen your trust and open your heart.”

In practice, you might:

  • Take your medicine, see your doctor, rest—these are not “against” the Course.
  • At the same time, gently remind yourself:

“This does not change what I am. I am still as God created me.”

“Holy Spirit, help me see beyond this appearance to the truth of my being.”

Healing, in ACIM, is first and foremost a *change of mind*—from fear to love, from body-identity to spirit-identity. Physical improvement may or may not follow, but the real healing is the restoration of peace.

4. Anxiety and daily stress

When you feel anxious about money, family, the future, or world events, notice how much of that anxiety is a form of *defense*:

  • Planning from fear
  • Constant mental rehearsing of worst-case scenarios
  • Tightening in the body

The ego says:

“If you don’t worry, you’re not being responsible.”

The Holy Spirit says:

“Worry is a defense against trust. Let Me guide you instead.”

You can practice by saying:

  • *“If I defend myself I am attacked. My worry is not protection; it is self-attack.”*
  • *“Holy Spirit, I am willing to be shown a different way to see this.”*

You will still do what is practical and kind in the world—but from a calmer, quieter place.

III. Overcoming Resistance

This lesson can feel threatening because it asks you to question what you’ve always believed keeps you safe: your defenses.

Common resistances:

1. *“If I don’t defend myself, I’ll be walked on.”*

The Course is not asking you to be passive or to tolerate abuse. It is asking you to release the *inner belief* that you are a victim. You can still say “No,” leave a harmful situation, or set a firm boundary—but without hatred, guilt, or fear. That is not defense; that is clarity.

2. *“Are you saying my sickness is my fault?”*

No. The Course speaks to the *unconscious mind*, not to blame you, but to free you. It says:

  • The mind is powerful.
  • It can use anything—health or sickness—to support the ego or to support awakening.

The Holy Spirit uses this idea to gently loosen your identification with the body, not to shame you.

3. *Fear of letting go of control*

Defenses feel like control. Letting them go feels like falling into the unknown. The Course is inviting you to discover that:

  • What you call “control” is actually fear.
  • What you call “letting go” is actually returning to trust.

If you feel resistance, you can simply say:

  • *“Holy Spirit, I am afraid of this idea. Please meet me where I am. I am willing to be gently led.”*

Your willingness, not your perfection, is what matters.

IV. Today’s Practice (Lesson 148)

Lesson 148 is a review. You are asked to practice these two ideas throughout the day:

1. *“If I defend myself I am attacked.”*

2. *“Sickness is a defense against the truth.”*

Here is a simple way to practice:

1. Morning

  • Sit quietly for a few minutes.
  • Close your eyes and breathe gently.
  • Say slowly, with as much sincerity as you can:

“If I defend myself I am attacked.
Sickness is a defense against the truth.
Holy Spirit, help me understand and experience the safety these ideas point to.”

  • Let a few moments of quiet follow. You don’t need to force understanding. Just be willing.

2. During the day (frequent short practices)

Whenever you feel:

  • Tension
  • The urge to justify, argue, or explain yourself
  • Worry about health or any bodily symptom
  • Anxiety about anything

Pause for a few seconds and say silently:

  • In conflict or defensiveness:
“If I defend myself I am attacked.
I do not need defense. I am safe in God.”

  • In sickness or concern about the body:
“Sickness is a defense against the truth.
My reality is spirit, untouched and whole.”

Then ask:

“Holy Spirit, how would You have me see this?”

You may receive a gentle feeling of calm, a new way to respond, or simply a little more space inside. That is enough.

3. Evening

Before sleep, take a moment to review your day:

  • Where did you feel defensive?
  • Where did you feel vulnerable or sick or afraid?

Without judgment, bring those moments to the Holy Spirit and say:

“I bring You all my defenses and fears.
I do not know what anything, including this, means.
Please reinterpret it for me in the light of truth.”

Rest in that intention as you drift into sleep.

V. Comparable ACIM Lessons

These ideas are closely connected to several other lessons:

  • **Lesson 26: “My attack thoughts are attacking my invulnerability.”**

Shows that the real “attack” is always in the mind, against your own peace.

  • **Lesson 135: “If I defend myself I am attacked.”**

The original, full teaching behind today’s first review idea. It explains in detail how defenses make what they defend against seem real.

  • **Lesson 136: “Sickness is a defense against the truth.”**

The original, full teaching behind today’s second idea, exploring how sickness is used to prove the body’s reality.

  • **Lesson 94: “I am as God created me.”**

Reminds you of your true identity as spirit, which is what both of today’s ideas are pointing you back to.

  • **Lesson 109: “I rest in God.”**

A beautiful companion to today’s practice. Where there is true rest in God, there is no need for defense.

VI. Closing Thought

You do not have to understand these ideas perfectly today. You only need a little willingness to question the old belief that fear and defense keep you safe.

Beneath all your defenses, there is a quiet place in you that has never been attacked, never been sick, never been afraid. Today’s lesson is an invitation to trust that this place is real—and that it is you.

Let today be gentle. Let your defenses soften just a little. The Holy Spirit will do the rest.
