Lesson 142 is a review lesson. It asks you to remember and practice two ideas:
1. *“My mind holds only what I think with God.”*
2. *“I thank my Father for His gifts to me.”*
3. *“Let me be still and listen to the truth.”*
(Those last two are the specific review ideas paired with this lesson.)
Let’s gently explore what this really means, and how to live it today.
The Core Teaching
“My mind holds only what I think with God.”
This line is the foundation of all the review lessons in this section. It is a radical statement about your true identity.
It says:
- At the deepest level, your mind is **not split**.
- You do not have a “good” mind and a “bad” mind.
- You do not have a loving self and a hateful self.
- You have **one real mind**, and it shares its thoughts with God.
What you experience as fear, guilt, anger, jealousy, and shame are not your real thoughts. They are like passing clouds over a changeless sky. They seem to be yours, but they are not created by God, and therefore they are not part of your true Self.
The Course is not asking you to pretend you don’t feel these things. It is asking you to *question their reality* and their source.
- If God is Love, and you are created by Love,
- then only loving thoughts can be truly yours.
- Anything else is a dream, a mistaken identity, a temporary hallucination of separation.
So when you repeat, “My mind holds only what I think with God,” you are gently refusing to accept the ego’s verdict about you. You are saying:
“No matter what I seem to think or feel, my real mind is forever joined with God, and only His loving thoughts are truly in me.”
“I thank my Father for His gifts to me.”
This line turns your attention to *gratitude for what is eternally true*, not for the shifting circumstances of the world.
What are God’s gifts?
- Your **innocence**
- Your **unbroken union** with Him
- Your **peace**, which cannot truly be taken away
- The **Holy Spirit** in your mind, guiding you
- Your **true Self**, which has never been harmed
The ego wants you to believe that you are poor, lacking, and vulnerable. It tells you that you must struggle, compete, and defend yourself to survive. It says you are missing something essential and must search for it in people, jobs, money, status, or special relationships.
The Holy Spirit reveals that you already have everything that matters:
- You are loved.
- You are safe in God.
- You are complete.
When you say, “I thank my Father for His gifts to me,” you are choosing to remember that *you are not empty*. You are not a beggar. You are the beloved child of a loving Creator.
“Let me be still and listen to the truth.”
This is the practical doorway.
The ego is loud, urgent, and restless. It wants constant noise: mental noise, emotional noise, physical busyness. Why? Because in stillness, its illusions are exposed.
The ego is trying to hide:
- That it is **not your real identity**.
- That its stories of guilt and fear are **made up**.
- That separation from God is **impossible**, and therefore the whole ego thought system is baseless.
The Holy Spirit is revealing:
- That beneath all your confusion, you are **already whole**.
- That your “sins” are **mistakes to be corrected**, not crimes to be punished.
- That every situation can be used for **healing and awakening**, not for reinforcing guilt.
- That you are **deeply loved**, right now, exactly as you are.
To “be still and listen to the truth” is to pause the ego’s commentary and allow another Voice to speak in your mind—a quiet, gentle, loving Voice that never attacks and never condemns.
Applied to Daily Life
Let’s bring this into some very human situations.
1. Relationships
Suppose you feel hurt or rejected by someone. The ego says:
- “They don’t care about you.”
- “You’re not good enough.”
- “You must defend yourself or withdraw.”
In that moment, you can remember:
“My mind holds only what I think with God.”
If only loving thoughts are truly yours, then the thoughts of attack, resentment, and self-hatred are not your real thoughts. They are a temporary confusion.
You might pause and say internally:
- “Let me be still and listen to the truth.”
- “Holy Spirit, show me how You see this person and myself.”
You may feel guided to:
- Speak honestly but gently.
- Forgive silently and not react.
- Recognize that their behavior comes from their own fear, not from your unworthiness.
In this way, the relationship becomes a *classroom for remembering your shared innocence*, instead of a battlefield.
2. Work and Career
At work you may feel pressure, competition, or fear of failure. The ego says:
- “Your value depends on your performance.”
- “You must prove yourself.”
- “You are at the mercy of other people’s opinions.”
Into this, you bring:
“I thank my Father for His gifts to me.”
You remember that your real worth is *God-given*, not earned. You can still do your best, but the inner strain begins to soften. You might say:
- “Let me be still and listen to the truth about my value.”
- “Holy Spirit, how would You have me see this project, this colleague, this boss?”
You may be guided to:
- Work with more calm and clarity.
- Let go of perfectionism.
- See colleagues as brothers, not rivals.
Work then becomes a place where you practice *trust and inner peace*, not just survival.
3. Illness and the Body
When the body is sick or in pain, the ego quickly uses this to “prove” vulnerability:
- “You are your body.”
- “You are weak, fragile, and doomed.”
The Course never asks you to deny symptoms or refuse appropriate help. It asks you to question the *meaning* you give them.
In illness, you can gently say:
- “My mind holds only what I think with God. Fear is not my real thought.”
- “Let me be still and listen to the truth: I am still as God created me.”
- “I thank my Father for His gifts to me: I am not a body; I am free in Spirit.”
You may still take medicine, see doctors, or rest. But inwardly, you are practicing remembering that your *true Self is untouched* by sickness. This opens the mind to healing—whether that appears as physical improvement, deeper peace, or both.
4. Anxiety and Daily Stress
When you feel overwhelmed by tasks, bills, or uncertainty, the ego says:
- “You are alone.”
- “You must figure this out by yourself.”
- “Something terrible is going to happen.”
Here the lesson is very direct:
“Let me be still and listen to the truth.”
You might pause for even 30 seconds:
1. Close your eyes.
2. Take a slow breath.
3. Say inwardly: “Holy Spirit, I feel afraid. I don’t know what to do. Please show me the truth.”
4. Sit in quiet for a moment, not trying to solve anything. Just *allow*.
You may not hear words, but you might feel a slight softening, a little more space inside. That is the beginning of remembering that you are not alone in your mind. Guidance is present.
Overcoming Resistance
Why might this lesson be difficult?
1. *It challenges your identity.*
The ego wants you to believe you are a separate, guilty, vulnerable self. To hear that your mind holds only loving thoughts with God feels like a threat to that identity.
2. *It seems to deny your experience.*
You may say, “But I do think hateful, fearful thoughts. How can you say my mind holds only what I think with God?”
The Course is not denying that you seem to think those thoughts. It is saying they are *not your real thoughts*. They are temporary misperceptions, not creations of your true Self.
3. *There is fear of letting go of control.*
To “be still and listen to the truth” means you are not the one in charge of deciding what everything means. The ego fears this loss of control and will distract you with busyness, doubt, or boredom.
If you feel resistance, that is not a failure. It is simply the ego feeling threatened. You can respond gently:
- “I notice I’m afraid of this idea. That’s okay.”
- “Holy Spirit, help me be willing to be willing.”
- “I don’t have to believe this perfectly. I just have to be open.”
Remember: the Holy Spirit is infinitely patient. Your fear does not offend Him. It is simply another place where healing is needed.
Today’s Practice: Step-by-Step
Here is a simple way to practice Lesson 142 today.
1. Morning (about 10–15 minutes)
1. Sit quietly, eyes closed if comfortable.
2. Slowly repeat:
- “My mind holds only what I think with God.”
3. Let the words sink in. Don’t argue with them. Just let them be true for a moment.
4. Then review the two ideas:
- “I thank my Father for His gifts to me.”
- “Let me be still and listen to the truth.”
5. Spend a few minutes in silence, letting these ideas rest in your mind. If thoughts wander, gently return to:
- “My mind holds only what I think with God.”
2. Hourly Reminders (very brief)
At the top of each hour (or as often as you remember):
1. Pause for 10–30 seconds.
2. Say quietly:
- “My mind holds only what I think with God.”
3. Then choose one of the two ideas and repeat it slowly once or twice.
4. Allow a brief moment of stillness.
3. When Upset or Afraid
Whenever you feel triggered, anxious, or angry:
1. Stop and take a breath.
2. Say inwardly:
- “My mind holds only what I think with God. This fear is not my real thought.”
3. Then:
- “Let me be still and listen to the truth.”
4. Ask:
- “Holy Spirit, how would You have me see this?”
5. Wait a few moments in quiet, even if you feel nothing. The willingness itself is healing.
4. Evening (5–10 minutes)
Before sleep:
1. Repeat:
- “My mind holds only what I think with God.”
2. Gently review your day, noticing where you remembered and where you forgot.
3. Offer both to the Holy Spirit:
- “I thank my Father for His gifts to me. Please use everything today for healing.”
4. Rest a moment in quiet, letting the day be washed in forgiveness.
Comparable ACIM Lessons
These lessons are closely related:
- **Lesson 35** – “My mind is part of God’s. I am very holy.”
Affirms your mind’s union with God and your inherent holiness.
- **Lesson 45** – “God is the Mind with which I think.”
Deepens the idea that your real thoughts are shared with God.
- **Lesson 52 (Review)** – Especially the idea: “I am determined to see things differently.”
Supports your willingness to let the Holy Spirit reinterpret everything.
- **Lesson 125** – “In quiet I receive God’s Word today.”
Very similar to “Let me be still and listen to the truth.”
- **Lesson 132** – “I loose the world from all I thought it was.”
Helps you release the ego’s interpretations and accept a new way of seeing.
All of these lessons point to the same truth: your mind is not what the ego says it is. It is joined with God, and in quiet, you can remember this.
Closing Thought
You do not have to make yourself holy; you already are. You do not have to create God’s gifts; you only have to accept them. Today, let your practice be gentle. When you forget, simply begin again:
“My mind holds only what I think with God.
I thank my Father for His gifts to me.
Let me be still and listen to the truth.”
Even a little willingness opens the door to a peace that has always been yours.
