Lesson 136: “Sickness is a defense against the truth.”
The Core Teaching
This lesson offers a radical idea: sickness is not something that just happens to us, nor is it a punishment from God. It is a defense—a strategy of the ego—used to keep us from remembering who we really are.
The Course teaches that our true Identity is spirit: whole, innocent, safe in God, and untouched by anything of this world. In this light, the body is not our home, and pain is not our truth. The ego, however, is built on the belief that we are separate, vulnerable bodies. It must constantly defend this belief, because if we ever truly recognized our spiritual Identity, the ego would simply disappear.
So the lesson says: sickness is one of the ego’s defenses. It is a way of saying:
- “I am a body.”
- “I am weak, vulnerable, and at the mercy of forces outside me.”
- “I am not responsible for what I feel; it’s my body, my genes, my circumstances.”
On the surface, sickness seems like something we don’t want. But on a deeper, unconscious level, the ego uses it as a way to protect its story of separation. If I am sick, I can “prove” that I am not the powerful, holy Son of God the Course describes. I can “prove” that I am small, limited, and subject to attack.
What is the ego trying to hide?
The ego is trying to hide the truth that:
- You are not a body.
- You are not vulnerable.
- You are not guilty.
- You have not truly separated from God.
The ego fears this truth because it means the end of its entire thought system. If you are innocent and whole, there is no need for defense, no need for attack, no need for fear. The ego cannot survive in that light.
So sickness becomes a smoke screen. It says:
- “Look at the body, not the mind.”
- “Look at the symptoms, not the beliefs.”
- “Look at the problem ‘out there,’ not the power of healing within you.”
What is the Holy Spirit revealing?
The Holy Spirit is not saying, “You should feel guilty for being sick.” That would only reinforce the ego’s game. Instead, the Holy Spirit gently reveals:
1. *Sickness is a mistaken choice, not a punishment.*
It is a choice made at the level of the mind, often entirely unconscious, to use the body as a shield against truth.
2. *The mind can choose again.*
Because sickness is a defense, it can be laid down. You are not trapped. You can choose healing by choosing to accept the truth about yourself.
3. *Healing is the release of fear and guilt.*
The Holy Spirit heals by undoing the belief that you are guilty and deserving of suffering. As guilt is undone, the need for defenses—including sickness—falls away.
4. *Your reality as God created you is untouched.*
No matter what the body seems to go through, your true Self remains whole, safe, and loved. Healing is remembering this.
This lesson is not about blaming yourself for illness. It is about reclaiming your power as a mind that can choose truth instead of illusion, peace instead of fear.
Applied to Daily Life
Let’s bring this into everyday situations.
1. Relationships
Imagine you are in a tense relationship—perhaps with a partner, family member, or co-worker. You feel hurt, misunderstood, or attacked. Later, you notice you often get headaches, stomach tension, or fatigue around this person.
From the Course’s perspective, the body is reflecting a mental choice: the choice to see yourself as a victim, under attack, and separate. The sickness or discomfort becomes a defense:
- It “proves” you are under stress because of what they did.
- It distracts you from looking at your own mind and your own judgments.
- It reinforces the belief, “I am weak, they are strong; I am at their mercy.”
To practice this lesson, you might say inwardly:
“This tension is a defense against the truth.
The truth is that I am not a victim.
I am as God created me: safe, loved, and whole.
I do not need sickness to defend myself.”
You are not asked to deny your feelings or ignore the relationship issues. You are invited to see that your inner safety does not depend on another’s behavior. As you accept that, the body’s need to “testify” to your victimhood begins to soften.
2. Work and Stress
At work, you might feel overburdened, unappreciated, or anxious about performance. Perhaps you get frequent colds, back pain, or exhaustion.
The ego uses these symptoms to say:
- “See? This job is killing me.”
- “I have no choice; I’m trapped.”
- “I’m just a body being worn down by demands.”
The Holy Spirit gently reinterprets:
- “Your mind feels burdened by guilt and fear of failure.”
- “You believe your worth depends on performance.”
- “The body is acting out this inner conflict.”
You can pause and say:
“Sickness is a defense against the truth.
The truth is I cannot be diminished by a job or by anyone’s opinion.
My worth is established by God, not by my performance.
I am willing to see this differently.”
You still do what is practical—rest, set boundaries, make changes if needed—but now you are addressing the real cause: the belief in unworthiness and fear. As that is healed, the body no longer needs to carry so much of the burden.
3. Illness
If you are facing a serious illness, this lesson can feel confronting. It might sound like it’s saying, “You chose this,” in a harsh way. But the Course is always speaking to the mind as a whole, not to a separate little person who consciously decided, “I want to be sick.”
At the level of the separated mind, there is a deep, hidden belief in guilt and fear of God. Sickness becomes a way of saying:
- “I will punish myself before God punishes me.”
- “If I am weak and suffering, maybe I will be spared worse.”
- “If I am sick, maybe I can prove I am not responsible for my life.”
The Holy Spirit does not accuse you of this. He simply says:
“Beloved, you do not need to suffer to be forgiven.
You are already forgiven because you were never truly guilty.
You do not need sickness to protect you from God.
God is only Love, and you remain His beloved Child.”
You can bring your illness into the light of this lesson by saying:
“Whatever this illness seems to be,
I am willing to see it as a defense I no longer need.
I ask to see the truth of my innocence and safety in God.
I place this situation in the Holy Spirit’s hands.”
Healing may or may not show up as physical cure. But true healing will always show up as increased peace, trust, and inner freedom, even in the midst of bodily conditions.
4. Anxiety and Daily Stress
When you feel anxious, your body often reacts: tight chest, shallow breathing, insomnia. The ego uses these symptoms to prove:
- “The world is dangerous.”
- “I am not safe.”
- “I must stay on guard.”
The lesson invites you to see anxiety itself as a defense: a way of keeping your mind busy with imagined dangers so you do not rest in the quiet truth of God’s presence.
You can gently say:
“This anxiety is a defense against the truth.
The truth is that in this moment, I am held in God.
I do not need fear to keep me safe.
Love is my safety.”
In this way, you begin to use every discomfort as a doorway back to truth, instead of as proof that truth is absent.
Overcoming Resistance
This lesson can feel difficult for several reasons:
1. *Fear of blame.*
You may think, “Is this saying it’s my fault I’m sick?” The ego loves this twist because it keeps guilt alive. The Holy Spirit is not blaming you; He is empowering you. If sickness is a defense, it is also something that can be released. You are not being condemned; you are being invited to freedom.
2. *Attachment to identity.*
Sometimes we are unconsciously attached to the identity that sickness gives us: “the one who suffers,” “the one who is fragile,” “the one who needs special care.” Letting go of sickness as a defense can feel like losing a familiar identity. The Holy Spirit gently assures you: what you lose is only a false self; what you gain is your true Self.
3. *Fear of God and of truth.*
At a deep level, the ego is terrified of God, believing He is angry and will punish us. So it uses sickness as a shield: “If I’m already suffering, maybe He won’t hurt me.” This lesson invites you to question that ancient fear. God is not your enemy. Truth is not your enemy. Love is not your enemy. You do not need pain to protect yourself from Love.
4. *Fear of responsibility.*
If the mind is powerful enough to choose sickness, then it is also powerful enough to choose healing. This can feel overwhelming. But responsibility in the Course is always shared with the Holy Spirit. You are not asked to heal yourself alone. You are asked to be willing and to let Him do the rest.
Whenever you feel resistance, you can simply say:
“I feel afraid of this idea,
but I am willing to be shown a gentler way to see it.
Holy Spirit, reinterpret this lesson for me in a way I can accept.”
Today’s Practice (Lesson 136)
The Workbook gives a specific structure for this lesson. Here is a simplified, gentle way to follow it:
1. Two Longer Practice Periods (about 15 minutes each)
Find a quiet place, close your eyes, and begin by repeating slowly:
“Sickness is a defense against the truth.
I will accept the truth of what I am,
and let my mind be wholly healed today.”
Then:
1. *Relax the body.*
Let your muscles soften. You are not trying to force anything. Just allow.
2. *Acknowledge your defenses.*
Think of any current physical symptoms, emotional distress, or worries. Silently say:
“These are defenses I have made to hide from the truth.
I do not need them.”
3. *Ask for a different perception.*
Say:
“Holy Spirit, show me the truth behind these defenses.
Show me the Self that does not need protection.”
4. *Rest in quiet.*
Let thoughts come and go without following them. You might imagine light surrounding you, or a gentle presence reassuring you. If you notice fear, don’t fight it; just acknowledge it and say:
“I choose truth instead of this.”
5. *Close with gratitude.*
End by repeating the main idea again, very gently:
“Sickness is a defense against the truth.
I accept the truth of what I am.”
2. Frequent Short Practice Periods
Several times an hour, or as often as you remember, repeat the idea to yourself. You can adapt it to your situation:
- When you feel pain:
“This is a defense against the truth.
I am willing to see the truth instead.”
- When you feel stressed or anxious:
“I do not need this defense.
Truth is my safety.”
- When you feel tempted to see yourself as a victim:
“I am not a body, and I am not a victim.
Sickness is a defense against the truth.”
Use these brief reminders as gentle interruptions to the ego’s story.
Comparable ACIM Lessons
This lesson is closely connected with several others:
- **Lesson 5: “I am never upset for the reason I think.”**
Just as upset is not caused by external events, sickness is not caused by the body alone. Both are rooted in the mind’s choice.
- **Lesson 31: “I am not the victim of the world I see.”**
Sickness often feels like victimhood. This lesson and 136 both undo that belief and restore your sense of inner power.
- **Lesson 68: “Love holds no grievances.”**
Grievances are a defense against love, just as sickness is a defense against truth. Both hide the same radiant Self.
- **Lesson 70: “My salvation comes from me.”**
If sickness is a defense of the mind, then salvation—healing—must also come from the mind’s choice for truth.
- **Lesson 91: “Miracles are seen in light.”**
Healing is a miracle of the mind. It comes as we accept the light of truth and let it replace our defenses.
- **Lesson 135: “If I defend myself I am attacked.”**
This is the immediate neighbor to 136. Lesson 135 shows that all defenses actually hurt us. Lesson 136 extends this to say: sickness itself is one of those defenses.
Closing Thought
You are not being asked to deny your pain or pretend your body feels fine. You are being invited to look beneath the surface and remember: nothing can change the truth of what you are in God.
Every time you repeat, “Sickness is a defense against the truth,” you are quietly loosening the ego’s grip and opening a little more to the Love that has never left you.
You are not alone in this. The Holy Spirit walks with you, gently undoing every defense you no longer need. Let today be a small but sincere step toward remembering your invulnerability in Love.
