Lesson 120 is one of the review lessons. It asks you to revisit two ideas:
1. *(109) I rest in God.*
2. *(110) I am as God created me.*
These are not just comforting phrases. They are radical corrections to the way the ego has taught you to see yourself and the world. Let’s explore them deeply, but gently.
I. The Core Teaching
1. “I rest in God”
On the surface, this sounds like a promise of peace. But metaphysically, it says something much stronger:
- Your **true state** is rest, not struggle.
- Your **true home** is in God, not in a body, a world, or a story of survival.
- Your **true identity** is safe, untouched by anything that seems to happen here.
The ego’s entire thought system is built on the opposite idea:
“You are on your own. You must protect yourself. You are vulnerable. You are guilty. You must strive, defend, and control.”
So when you say, *“I rest in God,”* you are quietly denying the ego’s central claim. You are saying:
- I am not the anxious self I think I am.
- I am not the one who must hold everything together.
- I am held, sustained, and carried by a Love that cannot fail.
The ego is trying to hide this:
That there is **nothing to fear**, because nothing real can be threatened.
If you truly knew you rest in God, the ego’s entire drama would dissolve. No guilt, no attack, no defense, no specialness, no sacrifice. Just quiet certainty.
The Holy Spirit is revealing:
- You have never left your Source.
- The separation never truly happened.
- This world of fear and conflict is a dream in your mind, not your reality.
To “rest in God” is to gently withdraw belief from the dream of danger and return your awareness to the safety that has always been there.
2. “I am as God created me”
This is one of the most repeated ideas in the Course. It is a direct correction to the ego’s core lie:
“You have changed yourself. You are no longer innocent. You have ruined your purity. You are guilty, damaged, and unworthy.”
The Holy Spirit answers:
“You are as God created you:
innocent, whole, loving, and loved.
Nothing you have done, thought, or imagined has changed that.”
Metaphysically, this means:
- Your **true Self** is not the personality you see, not your history, not your trauma, not your mistakes.
- Your **true Self** is an extension of God’s Love, forever unchanged.
- The **“you”** that sins, fails, gets sick, ages, and dies is not the real you, but a character in a dream.
The ego is trying to hide this:
If you are still as God created you, then guilt is impossible.
And if guilt is impossible, punishment is impossible.
And if punishment is impossible, the ego has no reason to exist.
The Holy Spirit is revealing:
- You have never truly attacked God or yourself.
- You are not broken; you only believe you are.
- Salvation is not about becoming better, but about **remembering** what you already are.
When you say, *“I am as God created me,”* you are accepting that your innocence is not something you earn. It is your nature.
II. Applied to Daily Life
Let’s bring these ideas into very human situations.
1. Relationships
Suppose you’re in a tense relationship—romantic, family, or work. There’s blame, hurt, or distance.
The ego says:
- “They hurt me.”
- “I must protect myself.”
- “I must prove I’m right.”
- “I am not safe with them.”
From this mindset, you feel restless, defensive, and suspicious.
To bring in *“I rest in God”*:
- You pause and remember: “My safety is not in their behavior. My safety is in God.”
- You allow the nervous urgency to soften: “I do not need to attack or defend to be safe.”
- You realize: “If I rest in God, so do they. We share the same innocence beneath our fear.”
To bring in *“I am as God created me”*:
- You remember: “I am not the guilty self I think I am, and neither are they.”
- You see that both of you are frightened minds, believing in separation.
- You ask the Holy Spirit: “Show me their innocence and mine. Help me see beyond the story.”
This doesn’t mean you become a doormat or ignore practical boundaries. It means you let Love, not fear, guide your words and actions.
2. Work and Responsibilities
You may feel overwhelmed by tasks, deadlines, or financial pressure.
The ego says:
- “It all depends on me.”
- “If I fail, I’m worthless.”
- “I must control everything.”
This produces anxiety, tension, and exhaustion.
To apply *“I rest in God”*:
- You remind yourself: “My worth is not measured by productivity.”
- You pause for a moment of stillness before or during work: “I rest in God even as I work.”
- You let the Holy Spirit organize your day: “Guide my priorities. Show me what truly matters.”
To apply *“I am as God created me”*:
- You remember: “No job can add to or subtract from my value.”
- You see that your real function is not your role, but to extend love and forgiveness wherever you are.
- You allow mistakes to be reinterpreted: not as proof of unworthiness, but as opportunities to learn and forgive.
3. Illness and the Body
When the body is sick or in pain, the ego uses it as proof:
- “You are weak.”
- “You are vulnerable.”
- “You are a body, and the body is your reality.”
To apply *“I rest in God”*:
- You gently acknowledge: “My body may feel pain, but my Self rests in God.”
- You do whatever is loving and practical for the body, but you don’t make the body your identity.
- You invite peace into your mind, which is where true healing occurs.
To apply *“I am as God created me”*:
- You remember: “My true Self cannot be sick. Spirit cannot be harmed.”
- You do not deny the experience, but you deny its power to define you.
- You ask: “Holy Spirit, how can this situation be used to remember my innocence and the innocence of all?”
4. Anxiety and Daily Stress
You may feel chronic worry about the future, your loved ones, the world.
The ego says:
- “You must worry. It’s responsible.”
- “If you don’t control everything, something terrible will happen.”
- “You are alone in this.”
To apply *“I rest in God”*:
- You see that worry is the ego’s attempt to replace trust.
- You practice: “I do not know what anything is for, but God’s Will for me is perfect happiness.”
- You let yourself sink, even briefly, into the idea: “Right now, in this moment, I am held.”
To apply *“I am as God created me”*:
- You remember: “Fear is not my natural state. Peace is.”
- You see that anxiety is a sign you are believing in a false self.
- You say: “Holy Spirit, remind me who I am. I am not this frightened identity.”
III. Overcoming Resistance
This lesson can feel threatening to the ego.
Why?
1. *Fear of losing control*
“If I rest in God, I might stop protecting myself. Something bad will happen.”
The truth: Resting in God does not mean passivity; it means letting Love, not fear, guide your actions.
2. *Fear of losing individuality*
“If I am as God created me, I might lose my specialness, my uniqueness.”
The truth: You do not lose anything real. You lose only the burden of guilt and the need to be special through suffering or superiority.
3. *Fear that past sins are real*
“How can I be as God created me after all I’ve done?”
The truth: The Course teaches that what is unlike Love is not of you. Your mistakes are calls for love, not proof of sin.
4. *Fear of quiet*
“If I rest in God, I will have to face my mind, my pain, my emptiness.”
The truth: The Holy Spirit meets you there with gentleness. You are not asked to face anything alone.
If you feel resistance, you are not failing. You are simply noticing how tightly the ego clings to its story. Let that be okay. You can say:
“Holy Spirit, I am afraid of this idea.
Help me receive only as much as I am ready for,
and show me that I am safe in You.”
IV. Today’s Practice (Lesson 120)
Lesson 120 is a review of Lessons 109 and 110. Here is a simple way to practice today:
1. Morning
- Sit quietly for 5–10 minutes.
- Gently close your eyes.
- Slowly repeat to yourself:
*“I rest in God.”*
Let the words sink in. Imagine your mind as a tired child being held by a loving Parent.
- Then repeat:
*“I am as God created me.”*
Let these words wash over all your self-judgments, all your stories of failure.
You might alternate them:
- “I rest in God.” (pause, feel)
- “I am as God created me.” (pause, feel)
Ask inwardly:
“Holy Spirit, show me what these ideas mean for me today.”
2. Hourly Reminders
Each hour, pause for a few moments:
- If you feel stressed:
Say softly: *“I rest in God.”*
- If you feel guilty or inadequate:
Say: *“I am as God created me.”*
You don’t have to feel anything special. Just be willing to remember.
3. In Difficult Moments
Whenever anxiety, anger, or sadness arises:
1. Notice the feeling without judgment.
2. Say inwardly:
- “I feel afraid (or angry, sad), but **I rest in God**.”
- “I feel guilty (or unworthy), but **I am as God created me**.”
3. Ask: “How would I see this if I remembered I am safe in God and still as He created me?”
4. Evening
Before sleep:
- Spend a few minutes reviewing your day.
- Wherever you felt upset, gently cover it with:
“Even there, I rested in God, though I forgot.”
“Even then, I was as God created me, though I did not remember.”
- End with a quiet repetition:
*“I rest in God. I am as God created me.”*
Let that be the atmosphere in which you fall asleep.
V. Comparable ACIM Lessons
These ideas are closely related to several other lessons:
- **Lesson 94: “I am as God created me.”**
The original statement of this idea; it emphasizes your unchanged holiness.
- **Lesson 58 (Review):** Includes “My holiness envelops everything I see.”
Connected because if you are as God created you, your holiness is present everywhere.
- **Lesson 70: “My salvation comes from me.”**
Related because your salvation lies in accepting your true Identity, not in changing the world.
- **Lesson 75: “The light has come.”**
The light is the recognition of your true Self, as God created you.
- **Lesson 109: “I rest in God.”**
The original lesson, teaching that rest is your natural state.
- **Lesson 110: “I am as God created me.”**
The twin idea: your rest is guaranteed because your identity is unchanged.
All of these lessons point to the same truth:
You are not what the ego says you are. You are safe, innocent, and held in God.
VI. Closing Thought
Let today be gentle.
You do not have to fully understand these ideas. You are only asked to *lean* toward them, to let them touch your mind like a soft hand on your shoulder.
You rest in God, now, whether you feel it or not.
You are as God created you, now, whether you believe it or not.
Your practice is simply to *remember* a little more often.
The rest is done for you.
