Lesson 111 is a review lesson. It asks you to remember and practice two ideas:
1. *“Miracles are seen in light.”*
2. *“Miracles are seen in light, and light and strength are one.”*
These are not just pretty spiritual phrases. They are a complete description of how healing happens in the mind. Let’s walk slowly through what this lesson is really saying, and how it can touch every part of your day.
I. The Core Teaching
1. “Miracles are seen in light”
In ACIM, a miracle is a shift in perception—from fear to love, from separation to unity, from ego to Spirit. It is not about changing the world; it is about changing how you see the world.
“Miracles are seen in light” means:
- You cannot see a miracle while you are looking through the eyes of fear.
- You need a different “light” to see truly—the light of the Holy Spirit in your mind.
- This light is not outside you; it is the natural radiance of your true Self as God created you.
The ego’s “darkness” is simply the decision to see without God, without Love, without unity. It is a way of saying, “I will interpret everything by myself, through my fears, my past, my guilt, my judgments.” In that darkness, you cannot see miracles—not because they are not there, but because you are looking away from them.
So the lesson is not asking you to create miracles. It is asking you to allow your mind to be lit up so that you can recognize what is already true.
2. “Miracles are seen in light, and light and strength are one”
Here the Course links *light with strength*. In the ego’s world, strength seems to be:
- Control
- Defensiveness
- Power over others
- The ability to endure pain or push through
But the Course says your true strength is your union with God. Light and strength are one because:
- Light = awareness of truth
- Strength = certainty in that truth
When you are in the light of the Holy Spirit, you feel strong, not because you can dominate circumstances, but because you remember you are not alone, not guilty, not truly vulnerable. Your strength is that you share God’s Being. Nothing real can be threatened.
The ego wants you to believe:
- You are weak and alone.
- You must defend yourself constantly.
- You must control others or be controlled.
- You are at the mercy of the body and the world.
The Holy Spirit gently reveals:
- You are a holy Son of God, untouched in truth.
- You are joined with all your brothers in one mind.
- You are safe in God now.
- You can let go of defense and still be completely protected.
So this lesson is really about *trusting the light in you* as your true strength, and letting that light show you a different world.
II. Applied to Daily Life
Let’s bring this down into very human situations.
1. Relationships
Suppose you feel hurt by a partner, friend, or family member. The ego’s darkness says:
- “They are guilty.”
- “I must protect myself.”
- “I need them to change so I can be at peace.”
In this darkness, you see only attack and defense. No miracle is visible.
To bring light, you might say silently:
- “Miracles are seen in light. I am willing to see this person in light.”
- “Holy Spirit, show me what is true here. Show me their innocence and mine.”
You may begin to sense:
- They were acting from their own fear.
- Your worth is not damaged by their behavior.
- You can set boundaries without hatred.
- You share the same deep longing for love.
The situation may or may not change outwardly, but your experience changes. That shift is the miracle.
2. Work and career
At work, you may feel pressure, competition, or fear of failure. The ego says:
- “I am weak unless I prove myself.”
- “I must compare and compete.”
- “My value depends on performance.”
In that mindset, you feel anxious and fragile.
To invite light, you might pause and think:
- “Miracles are seen in light, and light and strength are one.”
- “My strength is not in my résumé. My strength is in God.”
- “Holy Spirit, let me see this workplace as a classroom in forgiveness and joining.”
Then you might notice:
- You can be honest instead of pretending.
- You can collaborate instead of compete.
- You can do your best without making your identity depend on the outcome.
Again, the miracle is the inner shift from fear to trust.
3. Illness and the body
When the body is sick or in pain, the ego’s darkness says:
- “I am this body.”
- “I am weak, vulnerable, and at the mercy of forces I can’t control.”
- “God must be far away or indifferent.”
The Course never asks you to deny symptoms. It asks you to question the interpretation. You can say:
- “Miracles are seen in light. I want to see this differently.”
- “Holy Spirit, help me remember I am spirit, not a body. Let me see that my true Self is not sick.”
You may still take medicine, see doctors, and care for the body. But in the light, you remember:
- The body is not your identity.
- Pain does not mean you are guilty or abandoned.
- You remain as God created you: whole, loved, and safe.
This remembrance is a profound miracle, even if the body’s condition does not instantly change.
4. Anxiety and daily stress
In small daily stresses—traffic, bills, schedules—the ego whispers:
- “You are on your own.”
- “You must manage everything perfectly.”
- “If you fail, you are unworthy.”
In that mindset, your world feels tight and hostile.
To practice the lesson, you might pause and breathe:
- “Miracles are seen in light.”
- “Light and strength are one, and I am that strength in truth.”
- “Holy Spirit, let me see this moment with you.”
You may feel a softening:
- The tension in your body eases.
- You remember you are carried.
- You see that this small situation is not your identity.
That gentle shift is the miracle.
III. Overcoming Resistance
This lesson can feel difficult because it challenges the ego’s core beliefs.
Why it feels threatening
1. *Fear of losing control*
If miracles are seen in light, and that light comes from the Holy Spirit, then you are not in charge of how you see. The ego fears this loss of control.
2. *Fear of being wrong*
To accept this lesson, you must admit that your usual way of seeing is mistaken—rooted in darkness, not truth. The ego would rather be “right and miserable” than “wrong and free.”
3. *Fear of true strength*
Real strength means you no longer need your defenses, grievances, or specialness. The ego secretly believes that without these, you will be nothing. The Course says the opposite: without them, you remember you are everything in God.
Gently addressing the fear
You do not have to force yourself to believe this lesson. You only need a little willingness. You might say:
- “I am afraid of this light, but I am willing to be shown that it is safe.”
- “Holy Spirit, I am afraid to let go of my way of seeing. Please go with me. Do not ask me to do this alone.”
- “I don’t need to understand everything. I only need to be willing to see differently.”
The Holy Spirit never takes anything real from you—only illusions, pain, and self-attack. If it hurts, it is not of God. If it is loving, it is safe to trust.
IV. Today’s Practice (Lesson 111)
Lesson 111 is a *review* of Lessons 91 and 92. The structure is simple, but powerful.
1. Morning and evening (longer practice)
Set aside about 10–15 minutes in the morning and again at night.
1. *Begin by quietly repeating:*
- “Miracles are seen in light.”
- “Miracles are seen in light, and light and strength are one.”
2. *Then take the first idea:*
- “Miracles are seen in light.”
- Close your eyes, breathe gently, and let the words sink in.
- Say inwardly:
“I want to see in light. I am willing to let my mind be lit by the Holy Spirit.”
- Rest a few minutes, letting thoughts come and go. If you notice fear, gently say:
“This is only a thought in darkness. I choose light instead.”
3. *Then take the second idea:*
- “Miracles are seen in light, and light and strength are one.”
- Let yourself feel that your true strength is not physical or personal, but spiritual.
- Say inwardly:
“I am strong in the light of God. In that light, I can see truly.”
- Rest again in quiet, allowing the sense of inner strength to grow, even if only a little.
4. *Close the practice* by gently affirming:
“I accept the light and strength that are already mine. I am willing to see miracles today.”
2. Hourly practice
Each hour, pause for a brief moment—30 seconds to a minute if that’s all you have.
- Silently repeat one or both ideas:
- “Miracles are seen in light.”
- “Miracles are seen in light, and light and strength are one.”
- Let the words interrupt the usual flow of worries and plans.
- If you are in the middle of something stressful, add:
- “I choose to see this in light.”
3. Use as needed
Whenever you feel upset, anxious, angry, or sad during the day, pause and say:
- “Miracles are seen in light. I am willing to see this differently.”
- “Light and strength are one. I am not weak, because I am not alone.”
You are not trying to force a feeling. You are simply opening a door.
V. Comparable ACIM Lessons
These ideas are closely related to several other lessons:
- **Lesson 44: “God is the light in which I see.”**
This explains that the light is not of the body’s eyes, but of the mind joined with God.
- **Lesson 68: “Love holds no grievances.”**
Grievances are the ego’s darkness. Letting them go is how you allow light in.
- **Lesson 75: “The light has come.”**
This celebrates the fact that the light is already here; you only need to accept it.
- **Lesson 91: “Miracles are seen in light.”**
The original statement of today’s first idea, focusing on the need to accept light in your mind.
- **Lesson 92: “Miracles are seen in light, and light and strength are one.”**
The original teaching on the unity of your true strength with the light of God.
All of these lessons are different doorways into the same truth: your mind is not small, not dark, and not alone. It is joined with God and with all your brothers in a single radiant light.
VI. Closing Thought
You do not have to make the light or earn the light. You only have to stop insisting on darkness. Today, let yourself rest—just a little—in the quiet thought:
“Miracles are seen in light, and this light is already in me.”
Even a small willingness opens the way for a great healing. You are not asked to be perfect—only to be willing. The Holy Spirit will do the rest.
