Lesson 214. Review (194)
How this lesson can be lived today
**“I am not a body. I am free.
For I am still as God created me.”**
and the specific review line is:
**“I place the future in the Hands of God.”**
Everything in this lesson flows from these two ideas. One reminds you of *what you are*; the other reminds you of *where your safety lies*.

## The Core Teaching
### “I am not a body. I am free.”
In ACIM, the body is not evil, but it is not your identity. The ego uses the body as proof that you are small, vulnerable, separate, and destined to die. It says:
- “You are this fragile thing.”
- “You are limited by age, health, money, location, and other bodies.”
- “Your value depends on what your body does, how it looks, and how others respond to it.”
This is the ego’s central lie: **you are only what your senses report.**
The Course counters this with a radical statement:
**You are a creation of God—spirit, love, and mind—not a body.**
The body is a temporary learning device, nothing more. It can be used by the ego to prove separation, or by the Holy Spirit to demonstrate love.
When you say, “I am not a body. I am free,” you are not denying your physical experience; you are denying that it defines you. You are remembering that your true Self cannot be hurt, diminished, or lost.
### “I place the future in the Hands of God.”
The ego lives on time—especially the future. It says:
- “You must control everything.”
- “You must worry to stay safe.”
- “If you don’t plan and fear enough, something terrible will happen.”
Underneath all this is a deep fear: **“I am alone and unprotected in a dangerous world.”**
The Holy Spirit offers a different vision:
- The future is not separate from God.
- There is a loving Intelligence that knows your path.
- You do not need to manage the universe to be safe.
- Your only real “future” is the remembrance of your eternal Self.
To “place the future in the Hands of God” is not passivity. It is a shift in *inner authority*. You still make appointments, pay bills, plan your day—but you do it from a place of trust instead of fear. You let your decisions be guided by peace, not anxiety.
### What the ego is trying to hide
The ego is trying to hide:
1. **Your invulnerability as spirit.**
If you remembered you are not a body, its entire thought system of fear would collapse.
2. **The presence of Love right now.**
If you knew how deeply you are held in Love, you would not be terrified of the future.
3. **That you are not in charge of salvation.**
The ego wants to be your “savior” through control, defense, and attack. It hides the fact that salvation is already given: you are still as God created you.
### What the Holy Spirit is revealing
The Holy Spirit is gently revealing:
- You are safe at the level that truly matters.
- Nothing real can be threatened, and nothing unreal exists.
- Your future is not a chain of dangers, but a classroom of opportunities to remember love.
- Every situation can be used for healing, no matter how it appears.
---
## Applied to Daily Life
Let’s bring this into very concrete situations.
### Relationships
**Ego’s version:**
- “I need this person to behave a certain way so I can feel safe.”
- “If they leave, I’m abandoned. If they disapprove, I’m unworthy.”
- “I must manage this relationship to secure my future happiness.”
This makes you cling, control, or withdraw. The future of the relationship feels like a life-or-death issue.
**Holy Spirit’s reinterpretation:**
- “I am not a body. I am free. My worth is not in this person’s hands.”
- “I place the future of this relationship in the Hands of God.”
- “Let this connection be used for learning forgiveness and extending love.”
Practically, this might look like:
- Instead of rehearsing what might go wrong in the relationship, you pause and say:
*“I place this relationship’s future in Your Hands. Show me how to love today.”*
- When you feel jealous or fearful, you remember:
*“My safety is not in their behavior. I am still as God created me.”*
The relationship softens; it becomes less about possession and more about shared healing.
### Work and Career
**Ego’s version:**
- “My job is my security.”
- “If I don’t succeed, I’m a failure.”
- “I must control my career path or I’ll be ruined.”
This leads to overwork, anxiety, competition, and constant fear about the future.
**Holy Spirit’s reinterpretation:**
- “My function is forgiveness, not self-attack.”
- “This job is a temporary form in which I can learn to trust and to extend love.”
- “I place my career’s future in the Hands of God.”
Practically, this might look like:
- Before a meeting, you pause:
*“Holy Spirit, guide my thoughts. Let me be truly helpful, not driven by fear.”*
- When worrying about promotions or layoffs, you remind yourself:
*“My real security comes from God, not this role. I am not a body. I am free.”*
You still act responsibly, but you no longer believe your entire identity hangs on the outcome.
### Illness
**Ego’s version:**
- “Illness proves I am only a body.”
- “I am at the mercy of random forces.”
- “The future is a slow decline into loss and death.”
This brings terror and a sense of victimhood.
**Holy Spirit’s reinterpretation:**
- “The body can be sick, but my Self cannot be harmed.”
- “Illness can become a classroom in which I learn to trust, forgive, and accept love.”
- “I place the future of this body in the Hands of God.”
Practically:
- You still seek appropriate medical care; the Course never forbids that.
- But inwardly you say:
*“Let this be used for healing my mind. Let me remember I am still as God created me.”*
- You notice that even in illness, moments of peace, kindness, and gratitude are still available—and these are reflections of your true Self.
### Anxiety and Daily Stress
**Ego’s version:**
- “If I don’t worry, I’m irresponsible.”
- “My anxiety keeps me safe.”
- “I must mentally rehearse every possible disaster.”
This is exhausting.
**Holy Spirit’s reinterpretation:**
- “Worry is not protection; it is self-torment.”
- “Trust is your true protection because it aligns you with Reality.”
- “You can plan practically, but you don’t need to worship fear.”
Practically:
- When you catch yourself spiraling into “what if,” you pause:
*“I place the future in the Hands of God. Only the present moment is given me to choose love.”*
- You might breathe slowly and repeat:
*“I am not a body. I am free. I am still as God created me.”*
Over time, the nervous system begins to learn a new habit: turning to trust instead of panic.

## Overcoming Resistance
This lesson can feel threatening to the ego for several reasons:
1. **Fear of losing control.**
“If I place the future in God’s Hands, what if God doesn’t give me what I want?”
Underneath is a belief that God is untrustworthy or punishing.
2. **Attachment to the body identity.**
“If I’m not a body, who am I? What about my story, my history, my personality?”
The ego equates letting go of body-identity with annihilation.
3. **Fear of being irresponsible.**
“If I stop worrying, I’ll become careless and everything will fall apart.”
The Course answers these fears gently:
- God is not a tyrant; God is Love itself. Placing the future in Love’s Hands is not a loss—it is a release from fear.
- You are not asked to deny your human experience, only to stop confusing it with your eternal Self.
- Trusting God does not mean you stop planning; it means you plan *with* peace instead of with panic.
If doubts arise, you can simply acknowledge them:
> “I feel afraid to trust. I’m scared to let go of control.
> Holy Spirit, I’m willing to be shown that trust is safe. Help me take one small step.”
Your willingness, not your perfection, is what matters.

## Today’s Practice
Here is a simple, gentle way to practice Lesson 214 today.
### 1. Morning quiet time (5–15 minutes)
- Sit comfortably and close your eyes.
- Slowly repeat, with sincerity:
**“I am not a body. I am free.
For I am still as God created me.”**
- Let the words sink in. You don’t need to force belief; just allow openness.
- Then bring to mind the idea:
**“I place the future in the Hands of God.”**
- Imagine placing all your concerns—relationships, health, money, work, family—into a loving Presence. You might visualize handing them over, or placing them on an altar of light.
- Sit in quiet for a few moments, letting yourself feel even a small taste of relief.
### 2. During the day – short reminders
Whenever you feel stress, fear, or planning anxiety:
1. Pause.
2. Take one slow breath.
3. Silently say:
- On the in-breath: *“I am not a body.”*
- On the out-breath: *“I am free.”*
4. Then add:
*“I place the future in the Hands of God.”*
Use this especially:
- Before difficult conversations
- When checking emails or messages
- When thinking about money or health
- When imagining worst-case scenarios
### 3. Using specific situations
If a particular worry keeps returning, address it directly:
> “I place the future of my job in the Hands of God.”
> “I place the future of this relationship in the Hands of God.”
> “I place the future of this body in the Hands of God.”
Then add:
> “Let this be used for healing, not for fear.”
### 4. Evening reflection
Before sleep, take a moment to review your day:
- Notice where you remembered to place the future in God’s Hands.
- Notice where you forgot and got caught in fear.
- Without judgment, gently say:
**“I am not a body. I am free.
For I am still as God created me.”**
Offer the whole day—successes and failures—into God’s Hands. Rest in the idea that nothing real was harmed.

## Comparable ACIM Lessons
Several lessons are closely related:
- **Lesson 199: “I am not a body. I am free.”**
This is the core identity shift that today’s review repeats.
- **Lesson 158: “Today I learn to give as I receive.”**
Both emphasize that what you *are* in truth is beyond the body and time.
- **Lesson 135: “If I defend myself I am attacked.”**
Shows how trying to control the future through defenses creates the very fear we’re trying to avoid.
- **Lesson 194: “I place the future in the Hands of God.”**
The original lesson being reviewed today. It explains how this one idea can end anxiety about time.
- **Lesson 109: “I rest in God.”**
Very similar in feeling: a deep inner rest that comes from trust instead of control.
Together, these lessons form a gentle pathway from fear of the future to trust in a loving Presence that has never left you.

## Closing Thought
You do not have to master this lesson today. You are only asked to *lean* in this direction—to be a little more willing to trust, a little less devoted to fear.
Each time you remember:
**“I am not a body. I am free.
For I am still as God created me.
I place the future in the Hands of God.”**
you loosen the chains of anxiety and step closer to the quiet certainty of your true Self.
Walk gently today. You are not walking alone.
